Lloyd was born on the family farm near Portsmouth, Iowa, to Ted (Theodore) and Rose Pauley on March 30, 1938. He attended a one room school house near the home place and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Portsmouth in 1955.
Lloyd loved farming from an early age and spent his entire life farming with his wife, Nancy in the Portsmouth area. On October 1, 1960, Lloyd was united in marriage to Nancy Jane Kleinjan at St. Philomena's Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska. They honeymooned in the Black Hills of South Dakota. They built a family farm outside of Portsmouth, where they raised their four children: Debra, Deanne, Christine, and Allan.
Lloyd was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He and Nancy enjoyed raising their family on the farm and later treasured the time they spent with their thirteen grandchildren: Amanda, Geoff, Angela, Brianna, April, Joe, Julie, Emily, Patrick, Robert, Lydia, Natalie, and Libby. He was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Snow, Jaxson, Apollo, Karter, Malek, Beckham, and Scottie.
Lloyd was also a true red tractor man. He loved International Harvester/ Farmall tractors, and his favorite was Farmall 826. Tractors and farm equipment were a constant source of interest and conversation for him. He especially enjoyed sending his children and grandchildren off on adventures throughout Iowa and the Midwest to find tractors, tractor parts, and equipment. These trips became more than just missions to bring home a piece of machinery; they became stories and memories that his family will carry with them for years to come.
Lloyd's family will remember him for his strong work ethic, his love of farming and Farmall tractors, and the many lessons he passed down simply by living them. He taught generations of his family the importance of showing up, working hard, and taking pride in a job well done. For many of his grandchildren, some of their best memories will be of riding along with Grandpa, helping with chores, climbing into a tractor, or heading down the road on a 4-wheeler.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Jane Pauley; his parents, Ted (Theodore) and Rose Pauley; and siblings Grace Ciolli, Sister Janette Pauley, Bonita Stolz, Kevin Pauley, Melvin Pauley, Neil Pauley, and Theodore Jr. (Terry) Pauley; and his son-in-law George Martens.
He is survived by his children Debra of Shelby, Iowa; Deanne and her husband Edward Idar III of Durango, Colorado; Christine and her husband Roger Young of Jasper, Minnesota; Allan Pauley and his wife Christine of Des Moines, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister Diane Pauley Miller; nieces; nephews; cousins; other family members; and many friends.
He passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2026, obtaining the age of eighty-eight at Elm Crest Nursing Home in Harlan, Iowa.
Visitation will be held prior to mass from 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM on Monday, September 21, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Mass will follow at 11:00 AM.
