David Jerome Rihner, son of Walter and Ila (Jones) Rihner, was born on November 3, 1940, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He attended Avoca High School and graduated with the class of 1958. He was a member of the Community Christ Church. On August 18, 1961, David was united in marriage to Rosemary Jean Estes at the RLDS Church in Council Bluffs. Together they raised 2 sons: Daniel and Brian.
Growing up, David was a star on the football field. He lettered as a freshman and would have lettered the other 3 years if he could have passed "that damn English class!" He enlisted in the Navy for a short time, then was medically discharged due to a medical issue. David worked various jobs, from factory work to security, and even ran his own business for over 10 years. He enjoyed bowling and was still actively bowling up until 2 years ago, when his health didn't allow him to continue. Sports were a huge part of his life. He loved all the Avoca Vikings sports teams, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Chicago Bears, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. You could most likely hear him telling referees they "needed glasses!" Watching his sons and grandchildren compete was one of his greatest joys. Later in life, David enjoyed doing puzzles and was an active member of the Community Christ Church in Persia.
On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, David passed peacefully at the Avoca Specialty Care Facility, having attained the age of 85 years, 10 months, and 5 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Rosemary, brother Richard, and daughter-in-law Lynne.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Daniel Rihner of Shelby, Iowa; Brian and wife Tamara Rihner of Hampton, Iowa; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; other family and many friends.
