Shirley Darlene Wilwerding daughter of Chester and Bessie Haley was born on August 5, 1937 in Carbon, IA. Shirley attended grade school in Carbon and graduated from Corning High School. She continued her education at Creston Junior College and Iowa Western College obtaining an LPN nursing degree. She worked as a cardiac nurse in the ICU unit at St Joseph Hospital in Omaha NE. As an adult she was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church where her faith began to grow and guide her life.
On January 20, 1968, Shirley was united in marriage to Richard John Wilwerding at St Frances Cabrini Church in Omaha, Nebraska. After her marriage, Shirley continued to work as a nurse at Myrtue Memorial Hospital for several years. She and her husband moved to a farm near Earling and then Portsmouth retiring in Harlan where they became members of St Michael's Catholic Church.
Shirley loved reading, history and watching detective stories. She especially enjoyed the game show Jeopardy and always looked forward to visits from family and friends while in the nursing home.
Shirley passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan Iowa attaining the age of 88 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Bessie Haley; husband, Richard Wilwerding; siblings: Don Haley, Steven Haley, Dorothy Arnold and Delores Dhone. In laws: Maxine Wilwerding, Phyllis and Roger Heller, Marvin Jablonski, Ivo and Darlene Wilwerding, Ed Blum, Jane Wilwerding, John Thraen, Duane (Bud) Wilwerding.
She is survived by her in laws: Norma Jablonski, Jolene Blum, Judy Thraen, Sandy Wilwerding, Carol Eagle and her husband Don, Larry Wilwerding and his wife Sharon, as well as many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
