Lyle Otto Peters was born on May 19, 1922 in Walnut, Iowa to Otto and Anna (Jacobsen) Peters. Lyle attended Avoha High School before he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) during the great depression.
He was united in marriage to Marian Ruth Glissmann on May 15, 1948 in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. They were the parents of two children, Heidi and Scott. Lyle enlisted into the United States Air Force and was stationed in Kimbolton, England during WWII. He also served during the Korean War until his honorable discharge on March 21, 1952.
Lyle and his family made their home in California and Colorado before settling in Avoca. He began working on the Iowa State Highway Commission. He then went into business with his brother Clyde in which they ran a service station until Lyle retired from the business in 1982.
Lyle and Marian enjoyed spending time together and golfing. They treasured their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. After celebrating their 49th Wedding Anniversary in May of 1997, Marian died at their home at age 68.
Lyle joined the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa in August of 2009 and this is where he died on Monday, February 27, 2012 having attained the age of eighty-nine years, nine months and eight days. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marian; granddaughter, Jennifer Johnston; and his siblings: Allen Peters, Ronald Peters, LeEtta Nielsen and Arnold Peters.
He is survived by his children: Heidi and her husband Tony Schoening of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Scott Peters of Avoca, Iowa; two grandchildren: Sam Peters of Shelby, Iowa and Mallory Peters of Ames, Iowa; three great grandchildren: Chase, Brett and Makahla Johnston; his brothers: Vernus Peters and his wife Ethel, Clyde Peters and his wife Mary all of Avoca, and Jack Peters and his wife Colleen of Council Bluffs; sister-in-law Joan Peters of Webster City, Iowa; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Wayne Paulsen officiated the 11:00 A.M. funeral service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa on Thursday, March 1, 2012. Military Rites were held at the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca. Honorary casket bearers were Robert Jensen, Jack Osborn and Gerald Peck. Serving as casket bearers were Sam Peters, Mallory Peters, Shawn Peters and Nick Peters.
