Larry was born June 16, 1939 to Harold and Orpha (Kay) Jacobsen. He attended school in Hancock and graduated with the last Hancock High School class, the Class of 1957.
He married Jane Harris on December 29, 1961, shortly before he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served as a helicopter mechanic aboard the aircraft carrier Midway. After his time in the Navy, Larry got back to what he knew best-working with his hands. He started out as a carpenter, later ran his own construction and excavating business, and was never afraid of a long day's work.
In 1988, Larry and Jane started the Jacobsen Oil Company, which was loved by just about everyone-except maybe Jane. Later on, the business was turned into a local bar, and it's still going strong today as Jake's Station, a place where plenty of stories have been told and friendships made.
Larry enjoyed the simple things in life. His hobbies included hunting and hosting happy hour for anyone who cared to stop by-a time that usually involved good conversation, a few laughs, and making sure no one ever felt like a stranger.
Larry was married for 55 years to his wife, Jane (Harris) Jacobsen, until her passing in 2017. Together, they built a life centered on family, and helping others whenever they could.
On Saturday, March 7, 2026, Larry passed away peacefully at Elm Crest Assisted Living in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of 86 years, 8 months and 19 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Jane; and brother Lynn Jacobsen.
He is survived by his children, Joy Krohn (Dean) of Avoca, IA, and Daniel Jacobsen (Mary) of Hilton Head, SC; grandchildren and their families Adam Krohn (Kristen) of Avoca, IA, and their boys Parker and Blair; Preston Krohn (Ashley) of Avoca, IA, and their girls Kinley, Sadie, and Presley; Josh Krohn (Taylor) of Avoca, IA, and their children Liv, Ace, and Ivy; Davis Jacobsen (Josie) of Avoca, IA, and their boys Lane and Beau; Benjamin Jacobsen (Caitlyn) of Alexandria, VA, and their daughter June; and Hana Jacobsen (Cody Smoot) of Omaha, NE, and their son Cruz; his sisters Kay Prine of Council Bluffs, IA; Cherolyne Holder (Jay) of Spring Valley, CA; and brother Lon (Diane) of Avoca, IA; other family and many friends. He will be missed more than words can say and remembered with a smile by all who knew him.
