Kenneth and Susan Kobold
Susan Inge Kobold was born on May 8, 1948, in Leavenworth, Kansas, to Rolland “Jack” and Inge Murray. She was one of five children and grew up in Harlan, Iowa, where her legacy of kindness, generosity, and hard work would touch the lives of countless individuals. Sue was a graduate of Harlan High School and briefly attended Iowa State University before returning home. It was in Harlan where she met and fell in love with Kenneth Martin Kobold, whom she married on December 19, 1969. Together, they would build a life of shared dedication and service to their community.
Kenneth Martin Kobold, born on March 23, 1941, to Arthur and Mary (Majuerus) Kobold, was known for his quiet strength, loyalty, and dedication. With Sue by his side, Kenny was the steady rock that helped anchor the pair’s shared dream of creating something lasting in their community. Their love for each other and for Harlan was exemplified in the family-owned restaurant, Mickel's, which became a second home for many and a central gathering place for locals and visitors alike.
In 1972, Sue and Kenny took over Mickel’s Restaurant, transforming it into more than just a place to eat. It became a cornerstone of Harlan - a place of friendship, comfort, and belonging for many. For over 40 years, they rose before dawn, ensuring that Mickel’s doors opened every day at 5:30 a.m., 364 days a year. The restaurant was the site of countless memories, with two round tables always set aside for regular customers: one for older men and another for women, where daily conversations and camaraderie were shared. It was at these tables where many stories were exchanged, and it became clear that Mickel’s was not just a restaurant but a community institution.
Sue’s leadership extended far beyond Mickel’s. Her selflessness earned her the distinction of Citizen of the Year, as she dedicated herself to improving the lives of those around her. She was the heart and soul behind the Youth Center in Harlan, creating a space for teenagers to gather, play games, and enjoy dances. Sue also organized community-wide Halloween celebrations at the Veterans Auditorium, bringing joy to families each year. Her commitment to creating a safe, vibrant community was reflected in every endeavor she undertook.
Though Sue and Kenny’s work was often behind the scenes, their impact was immeasurable. They were more than just employers; they were mentors, friends, and second parents to many. Their generosity knew no bounds - Sue’s kindness was legendary, as she gave freely of herself, always putting others’ needs before her own. Whether it was offering guidance to an employee or supporting a neighbor in need, Sue saw the goodness in others and made a lasting difference in their lives.
Kenny, in addition to his devotion to Mickel’s, had a lifelong passion for cars. Whether he was tinkering in the garage or attending car shows, his love for all things automotive was a defining part of who he was. His enthusiasm for cars wasn’t just a hobby - it was a reflection of his meticulous nature and his joy in working with his hands. Many will remember the gleam in his eye when he spoke about his favorite cars, a hobby that was as much a part of him as his commitment to his community.
Mickel's Restaurant closed its doors in January 2013 after over 60 years of serving the Harlan community, but Sue and Kenny's spirit remains embedded in the town’s heart. Their legacy lives on in the many friendships they nurtured, the lives they touched, and the lasting impact of their generosity and care for others.
Kenny died on June 5, 2021 at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa and Sue died on May 18, 2025 in Omaha, Nebraska. In addition to their parents, Kenny and Sue were preceded in death by their granddaughter Kelsey Kobold; niece Renae Gambs and Sue’s siblings; Linda Flug and Bill Murray; Ken's sister, Darlene.
Sue and Kenny leave behind a legacy that will never fade - one of love, kindness, and community. They are survived by their children, Kelly (Kimmy) Kobold of Kirkman, IA; Tracy Kobold of Harlan, IA; Scott (Christina) Kobold of Harlan, IA; Sue’s siblings, Steve Murray of Elk Horn, IA, Gary (Renee) Murray of Harlan, IA; Ken’s siblings, Marlene (Harold) Brensel of Harlan, IA; Maxine (Dan) Obrecht of Ames, IA, Jerry Kobold of Tiffin, IA; grandchildren, Kurtis & Kolten Kobold; great grandchildren, Gracie Sue, Tanner, Payton Sue and Judah; many other relatives and friends.
