John Lewis Steenhusen was born on November 13, 1927 to John and Alma (Rostermund) Steenhusen in Irwin, Iowa. John was baptized at the Irwin Church of Christ. He graduated from Irwin High School with the Class of 1945 and attended one year of college at Commercial Extension School in Omaha, Nebraska. After finishing school, he returned to Irwin and worked for his father at John Deere Implement.
John was drafted into the United States Army and served his country during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1952. After his honorable discharge, John returned home and continued to work for his father at Steenhusen Implements as a parts man until 1970. In 1971 John started his own ITCO Farm and Home Store.
John married Mary Jane Nielsen on June 1, 1954 at the Irwin Church of Christ. There were two children born to this union: Jane and Paul. John loved his family. Spending time with them was most important. He loved to sing while playing the organ or piano for the family. John was a very active member in his church serving as Deacon and Elder and singing in the quartet. He played piano at church and Sunday School for nearly sixty years. John enjoyed doing lots of activities like gardening, fishing and bird watching while spending time with his grandchildren and loved ones. He was a respected sixty-year member of the Austin Earl Hiatt American Legion Post No. 614 until they closed and then became a member of the Helmer Reyelt American Legion Post Number 150 in Harlan, Iowa.
John died on Friday, January 4, 2013 at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-five years, one month, and twenty-two days. He was preceded in death by his parents.
John is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years Mary Jane of Irwin, Iowa; his daughter Jane and her husband Mark Tedesco of Underwood, Iowa; son Paul Steenhusen and his wife Patty of Harlan, Iowa; grandchildren: Lucas Barnett, Joshua Steenhusen, Amanda and her husband Nate Cowell, and Zachary Steenhusen; great-grandchild Mason Cowell; other family members and friends.
