JoAnn Catherine Schwery was born on January 2, 1939, to Marvin and Mary (Bullard) Newland in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. She lived at Chadron, Nebraska and then Van Port, Oregon where her father worked in the shipyards during the war. After the war, they moved to Neola, Iowa where she attended St. Joseph�s Catholic School, graduating with the Class of 1957.
On April 23, 1960, JoAnn was united in marriage to Richard Schwery at St. Patrick�s Catholic Church in Neola. There were ten children born to them: Michele, Leo, Mary, Louie, Lynn, Terry, Clifford, Connie, Marty, and Christel.
The family lived on a farm west of Panama until 1973. At that time, they remodeled a farmhouse and moved it to a farm north of Panama. JoAnn stayed busy raising the children and keeping up with all of their activities.
She has been a member of St. Mary�s Parish for fifty-two years. She was a 4�H leader, advocate for the Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, an active Red Cross volunteer, and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of Earling.
JoAnn died on Saturday, December 22, 2012 having attained the age of seventy-three years, eleven months, and twenty days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Lee Newland, and her son-in-law Jon Carmody.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-two years, Richard Schwery of Panama, Iowa; her children: Michele Schwery of Neola, Iowa, Leo Schwery and his wife Jan of Earling, Iowa, Mary Schwery of Omaha, Nebraska, Louie Schwery and his wife Tina of Woodbine, Iowa, Lynn Schwery of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Terry Schwery of Panama, Iowa, Clifford Schwery and his wife Vicki of Voluntown, Connecticut, Connie Carmody of Panama, Marty Schwery and his fianc� Renee of Panama, and daughter Christel and her husband Greg Kelley of Woodbine; twenty-two grandchildren; sisters: Betty and her husband George Ruckman of Compton, Arkansas, Abbie Benning of Neola, Iowa, and Colleen Lujan of The Colony, Texas; other family members and friends.
Rev. John Dorton celebrated the 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Kobe Livengood, Aidan Carmody, Gavin Kelley, Matthew Schwery, and Benjamin Kelley. Serving as casket bearers were Derrick Schwery, Jared Schwery, Mitchel Schwery, David Anderson, Jeremy Schwery, Wyat Schwery, Jordan Schwery, Joe Schwery, and Hunter Carmody. Interment was held at the Washington Township Cemetery in Panama, Iowa.
