Janice Arlene Mendel

December 7, 1938 – June 18, 2024

Janice Arlene Henning Mendel, age 85, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. Born on December 7, 1938 in Jefferson, IA to Jean Henning Thurston and Maurice Henning of Harlan, IA. She attended Old Park Elementary and Harlan High School. Janice lived in many places throughout her life before returning to her hometown of Harlan, where she purchased a home and settled into the community she loved.

Janice worked in various places over the years, including The Embers in Avoca, the Harlan Country Club, and Harlan Dairy Queen where she made many friends. She was known for her strong work ethic, kind spirit, and a remarkable talent in the kitchen. Her rhubarb dessert was legendary among family and friends.

An animal lover at heart, Janice had a special affection for her dogs and cats, who were always part of her home. She also devoted herself lovingly to caring for her mother over many years, a role she embraced.

Janice is survived by her beloved sisters, Alice (John) Evans of California and Nancy (Howard) Wilwerding of Florida. Aunt Janny will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephew that she loved like her own children, Debra Wilwerding Lake, Jeanne Wilwerding Hodgden, and Daniel Howard Wilwerding; her great-nieces and nephews, Drew, Troy, Alissa, and Jenna Lake; Jessica and Joey Hodgden; and her great-great-nephew, Bryson Hodgden. She also leaves behind her stepchildren Tina Mendel, BillieJean Ring, Shane Mendel, and grandson BJ Pauley along with their children, all of whom held a special place in her heart as well as many other family members and friends.

Janice's warmth, generosity, and gentle humor will be missed dearly by those who knew and loved her.
