James Roy “Shorty” Morgan went to his eternal home on December 18, 2013. He was born March 29, 1934 in Mapleton, Iowa, to William J. and Doris Elizabeth Hinrickson Morgan and baptized there in infancy. James was a man of many talents and had led quite a colorful life. He attended various country schools in childhood until at the age of 18 he joined the U.S. Navy during Korea conflict in 1952. He spent 3 years aboard the carrier “USS Hancock”, and then received his honorable discharge in 1956 as Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class. He was very proud of the fact that he and his fellow shipmates tested and perfected the first steam catapult system that the Navy still uses to this day. On March 4, 1954, he entered into marriage to Frances Marie Meeker in Onawa, Iowa. To this union 6 children were born. On May 7, 1958, James moved his family to Denison, Iowa and went to work for McClellan Electric, thus beginning his knowledge of electricity. In 1960 he helped build IBP from the ground up working maintenance for 8 years. From there he went to World Wide for another 8 years on maintenance. In 1975 James started his own Schleswig Electric business. He purchased land outside Kiron, Iowa in 1967, making it home for his family for the next 42 years. James was confirmed in his faith on September 18, 1969, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Stockholm Township. He retired from Metal Salvage around 2004. He and his wife moved into Denison in 2008, where he remained until the time of his death. James was also a 20 year member of the American Legion Post 383 out of Kiron and Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit. James was an avid hunter, especially pheasant hunting, enjoyed reading history and working with numbers, and was an avid storyteller. He had a deep love for the land and enjoyed working with livestock, especially calves. Those left behind to cherish his memory include his wife of 59 ½ years Frances Morgan of Denison, Iowa; six children: Brenda Miller and husband Merlin of Boone, Iowa, Jerold Morgan and wife Shirley of Denison, Iowa, Monica Walley and husband David of Kiron, Iowa, Denise Miller and husband Daniel of St. Paul, Minnesota, Dennis Morgan and wife Mary of Kiron, Iowa, Neil Morgan and wife Kyong of Lumberton, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 5 brothers: Leo Morgan and wife Charlotte of Blair, Nebraska, Walter Morgan and wife Betty and Rex Morgan and wife Debbie, all of Castana, Iowa, Daniel Morgan and wife Louise of Sioux City, Iowa, and Larry Morgan; 2 sisters: Helen Hesse of South Sioux , Nebraska and Doris Mauch and husband Jim of Soldier, Iowa; sister-in-law Betty Weltey of Davenport, Iowa; other relatives and friends. Preceding James in death were his granddaughter Rachel Ann Neddermyer, brother William Morgan Jr., sister and brother-in-law Betty and Verdean Suhr and nephew Gary Morgan. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013, at Faith Lutheran Church in Deloit, Iowa with the Rev. Christopher Maronde officiating. Congregational hymns were “I’m But A Stranger Here” and “Hark The Herald Angels Sing” with Mary Ellen Hafner serving as organist. A duet “Precious Lord Take My Hand” was sung by Jane Gronau and Jean Kropf and Joanie Buller played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes. Pallbearers were David Miller, Jeremy Morgan, Ryan Morgan, James Walley, Josiah Walley, Joshua Morgan and Nathaniel Miller. Interment, with Military Honors, provided by the American Legion, Post 8, Denison, Iowa, was at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Stockholm Township, Kiron, Iowa. Taps were played by Jeffrey Gustafson. Following the graveside rites and burial the family invited everyone to join them at the church for fellowship and a luncheon catered by Hy-Vee. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home, www.pfannebecker.com , Denison, Iowa was in charge of arrangements where on Friday, December 20, 2013, a visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
