James L. Sander

James Lee Sander was born on September 1, 1936 to Max and Evelene (Lengeman) Sander in Manning, Iowa. He attended school in Elk Horn but left High School and was later drafted into the United States Army. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in February of 1952.
Jim was united in marriage to Janice Olsen on May 9, 1958 in Elk Horn, Iowa. There were three daughters born to them: Karla, Lori, and a baby that died in infancy. After Janice’s death in 1989, Jim was married to Leila Lauritsen until her death in August of 2000.
Jim worked at Harlan Manufacturing as a shipping and receiving clerk and operated his own lawn care and snow removal business. He worked for Elk Horn Brand Eggs and Produce, drove a parts truck, as well as Schwann’s and the beef plant. He loved carpentry and had his own woodshop. He made windchimes and various other items. He retired in 2006 but continued to mow lawns.
He had a strong work ethic and enjoyed what he did. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, family, and friends, and listening to polka music.
Jim died on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-seven years, two months, and eighteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Janice and wife Leila, his infant daughter, and sister Janet Christensen.
He is survived by his daughters Karla and her husband Steve Mikkelsen of Harlan, Iowa and Lori and her husband Joe Beaman of Atlantic, Iowa; two grandchildren: Jana Mikkelsen, Andrew Scheffler; two step-grandchildren: Sunshine Gruber, and Grant Beaman; one great-grandchild: Kenny Scheffler; three step-great-grandchildren Jamison and Jaxson Gruber, and Clara Beaman; sister Kathy and her husband Dean Koster; Gerald Christensen; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
The 11:00 am funeral service was officiated by Mr. Richard Jones at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, on Saturday, November 23, 2013. Music was provided by Darla Hansen. Honorary casket bearers were Tim Christensen, Darin Olsen, Troy Christensen, Steve Olsen, Pat Olsen, Matt Koster, Jeff Koster, and Jake Koster. Serving as casket bearers were Ron Ellsworth and Dan Bieker. The family held a private burial in the Elk Horn Cemetery in Elk Horn, Iowa.
