Gregory Joseph Monahan was born on October 7, 1957, to Charles Monahan and Marie Miller Monahan. He grew up in the country in the Panama/Portsmouth area. Greg was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth and attended grade school there, too. Greg moved to Harlan around junior high age and graduated from Harlan Community High School.

Greg spent most of his working years in the heating, AC, electric/maintenance trades. Over the years he worked for Harlan Builders, Scott Electric in Avoca, Bob Nelson Heating and AC in Omaha and finally Mulhall’s in Omaha.

Greg was very active and enjoyed sports throughout his life. He especially loved volleyball and played very regularly in leagues in Omaha and Council Bluffs often 3–4 times a week for over a decade, maybe two. He later also enjoyed playing at Lake Manawa. After a severe injury, he became a serious spectator watching high school and college volleyball – a couple of his great niece’s games, TV and even sand-side.

In addition to volleyball, he was a big sports fan across the board but especially loved/hated the Iowa Hawkeyes football team. Greg also closely followed NASCAR and was a huge fan of Dale Earnhardt and Dale Jr.

Greg retired in 2021 and spent time living in Omaha before his return to Harlan. After returning to Harlan, he was often found walking around Pioneer Park with his beloved dogs, Macy and Lily.

Greg passed away peacefully on Friday, February 20, 2026 in Harlan, Iowa attaining the age of 68 years, 4 months and 13 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marie Monahan; siblings: Patrick Monahan, Lois Monahan in infancy, Marilyn Ahrens, Mike Monahan, Donna Moore and Phil Monahan.

He will be greatly missed by his sister, Darlene (Chuck) Montgomery of Yuba City, CA; sisters-in-law: Ruth (Patrick) Monahan of Harlan, IA and Barb (Mike) Monahan of Council Bluffs, IA; brother-in-law, Jim (Dort) Miller of Missouri Valley, IA; his girls, Macy and Lily; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
