Gordon Laverne Wigness, 80, passed away under hospice care on June 26, 2026. Services and burial will be held at a later date.
Gordon was born on August 26, 1945, in Harlan, Iowa, to Clifford and Frances (Thogersen) Wigness. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan and graduated with the Harlan High School Class of 1963.
Dedicated to a career of service, Gordon furthered his education to become a Medical Laboratory Technician, serving for several years at Manning General Hospital. He later attended DMACC in Des Moines, graduating with a degree in computer technology. Gordon went on to work for the Iowa Department of Human Services in Des Moines. A passionate advocate for his colleagues, he also served as the president of the Des Moines AFSCME Union until he suffered a major stroke in July 2002.
Following extensive therapy at Quality Living in Omaha, Gordon became a resident at Avoca Assisted Living. He loved sitting outdoors in the sun, listening to music, and dancing. Gordon was incredibly funny and took great joy in greeting and helping visitors; his sharp wit kept the facility staff on their toes and brought smiles to many.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Frances, and his brother, Jerald. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Linda Wigness of San Benito, TX; his nephew, Craig (Lisa) Wigness of Bethany, IL; and his nieces, Cindy Wigness and Denise (Eddie) Lopez, both of Phoenix, AZ.
