Gary Petersen

Gary Petersen was born on February 17, 1952, in Harlan, Iowa, to Ardith Wilcox and Edward Petersen. He grew up in Kirkman and attended the Irwin-Kirkman schools, where he graduated. During high school, Gary and his brother Al formed a band—Gary played guitar and took the lead as the vocalist, sparking a lifelong love for music.

After graduating, Gary proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1971. Following his military service, he moved to San Diego, California, with his brother Al, where they spent countless hours enjoying the beach and coastal life.

Gary had a deep and abiding passion for music. Whether he was strumming his guitar or playing the keyboard, he found tremendous joy in making music, often spending hours completely immersed in it.

Gary passed away on April 25, 2025, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, at the age of 73 years, 2 months, and 8 days. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward John Petersen; his mother, Ardith Kimball; his stepfather, Randal Kimball; his brothers, Alan and Danny Petersen; and his sister-in-law, Shari Petersen.

He is survived by his stepbrother, John Kimball, as well as several nieces, nephews, and many other loving family members.
