Donald Edward Scheffler, son of Herman and Olga (Jacobsen) Scheffler, was born on July 31, 1928, on a farm east of Hancock. Don attended country school and graduated from Hancock High School with the class of 1945, where he was a student athlete playing basketball. He attended Iowa State University and then came home to farm. He married his high school sweetheart, Fay Ebert on June 1,1949 and together they celebrated 72 years of marriage. They farmed for 80 years and raised four children, Jim, Jane, Lisa, and Mark. Don remained on his farm until his recent illness and was active in the Hancock United Methodist Church, Valley township trustees, Masonic Lodge, and Avo-Ha School Board. He enjoyed his Sunday night family gatherings, and attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events and activities. Don was a woodworking craftsman with walnut and made many beautiful gifts for friends and family. His other favorites were Pepsi and chocolate.
On Wednesday, February 11, 2026, Don was called home to be with his wife, Fay, while surrounded by his family, having attained the age of 97 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Fay; and sister Junellyn. His spirit lives on in the lives he touched and the example he set. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Left to cherish his memory are his children Jim Scheffler of Hancock, Iowa; Jane and husband Gary Mohr of Bettendorf, Iowa; Lisa Paulsen of Omaha, Nebraska; Mark and wife Toni Scheffler of Oakland, Iowa, 10 grandchildren: Tom, Doug and Mike Scheffler; Nick, John, Craig and Casey Mohr; Eric Paulsen; Kinsey and Cole Scheffler; 25 great-grandchildren: Stella, Lily, Callie, Duke, Jack, Dixie, Molly, Roman, Katie, Guy, Max, Ben, Chris, John, David, Kylie, Myles, Jack, Colton, Oliver, Caroline, Charlie, Auggie, Theo and Henrik; other family members, and many friends.
