Cherylene Mae Huebert

Cherylene Mae Smith Huebert, daughter of Lynn “Jack” and Josephine (Arkfeld) Smith, was born on February 3, 1946.

Cherylene was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s of Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. She attended country school at Washington No. 7 and Cass No. 2 through the seventh grade. She then attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated with the Class of 1965.

Following graduation, Cherylene worked as a nurse’s aide at Myrtue Memorial Hospital. On May 3, 1969, she was united in marriage to Neil Huebert. To this union, four children were born: Darcy Jo, Michelle Lynn, Chad Justin, and Denise Ann.

Cherylene returned to work in 1982, when Denise was four years old. She worked in the dietary department at Myrtue Medical Center as a salad maker and retired in 2012 after 30 years of service.

Throughout her life, Cherylene was dedicated to her faith and family. She served as a CCD teacher, co-president of the women’s parish group, and volunteered for blood mobiles for several years. She was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa.

Cherylene was engaged in farming with her husband, Neil, and remained on the family farm until after Neil’s death. In January 2024, she moved to Harlan, Iowa, where she enjoyed her apartment, making many new friends, and socializing.

Cherylene enjoyed gardening and tending to her flower beds, scrapbooking, reading, and working on word-search puzzles. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her family and loved being together for family get-togethers.

Cherylene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Neil Huebert; her son, Chad Justin Huebert; her brother, Garry Smith; nephews Trent Smith and Troy Smith; sisters-in-law Karen Risk, Phyllis “Tiny” Smith, and Thelma Smith/Nelson; and brothers-in-law Dallan Huebert, Gerald Huebert, and Robert Risk.

She is survived by her daughters, Darcy Jo (David) Kramer, Michelle Lynn (Corey) Sorensen, and Denise Ann (Dustin) O’Brien; grandchildren Macie (Luke) Ferguson, Braxton Kramer, Dustin O’Brien Jr. (Lexi), and Mariah Kramer; great-grandchildren Henry Ferguson, Elowynn Ferguson, and Adeline Ferguson; siblings Marlin Smith (Patti – friend), Valerie (William) Sullivan, Elizabeth Huebert, and Sharon Huebert; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family members.

Cherylene will be remembered for her gentle spirit, strong faith, love of family, and the many ways she quietly gave of herself to others. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be treasured by her family and all who knew and loved her.
