Donald “Gene” Baughman was born on May 17, 1927 to Paris and Lillian (Adams) Baughman at his grandparent’s home near Kirkman, Iowa. His family later lived on the family farm in Kirkman where Gene helped his father and brothers with the dairy production, crops, and chores. Gene’s sparked interest in agriculture helped him excel in Ag and Science classes at school. He attended school in Kirkman and graduated from Kirkman High School with the Class of 1944.
After his graduation, Gene began farming full time and later purchased the family farm from his parents in 1958. During his dairy cow operation Gene was milking approximately fifty cows per day. He later raised mixed breed feeder cattle and served in the Iowa Breeder Coop from 1962 to 1966.
On June 29, 1968, Gene was married to Wanda Jean Dickmeyer and helped her raise her teenage children. They were members of First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa and also attended services at the Methodist Church in Kirkman.
Gene was a member of the Kirkman Volunteer Fire Department from 1955 to 1970, was named Cattleman of the Year in 1983, spent four years on the Board of Directors for Shelby County Farm Bureau and four years on the board of Directors for Shelby County Farm Bureau and four years serving on the Shelby County Extension Council. In 1985 his family farm had achieved “Century Farm” status. Gene retired from farming in 1992.
Gene died on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-six years, six months, and twenty days. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Wanda, step-daughter Sherry, step-son Leland, brother Clarence, sister Cecile, and daughter-in-law Judi.
He is survived by his step-son Michael Dickmeyer of Omaha, Nebraska, step-daughter Lynnette and her husband Jim Hyndman of Grimes, Iowa; brother Dale Baughman and his wife Elsie of St. Cloud, Florida; grandchildren: Michael Anderson and his wife Carey of Waukee, Iowa, Meredith and her husband Jason Efken of Omaha, Nebraska, Timothy Dickmeyer and his wife Jonelle of Treynor, Iowa, and Beth Dickmeyer of Omaha, Nebraska; step-grandsons Adam Hyndman and his wife Melissa of Springhill, Kansas and Aaron Hyndman also of Springhill, Kansas; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Loretta Baughman of Kirkman, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; and his loving and caring family at Little Flower Haven Nursing Home who took care of him for nearly eight years.
Pastor Dan Hawn officiated the 1:00 PM funeral service on Friday, December 13, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa. Music was provided by Helen Warren. Honorary casket bearers were Tim Dickmeyer, Jimmy Baughman, Rusty Baughman, Gaige Petersen, Michael Anderson, and Randy Nelson. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Rose Hill Cemetery in rural Kirkman, Iowa.
