Ann Marie McDermott, daughter of Paul Richard and Charlotte (Kleffman) McDermott, was born on February 26, 1968 in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. She was raised on the family farm near Portsmouth and attended school at Harlan Community High School graduating with the Class of 1987.
After graduation, Ann traveled to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and was employed training and caring for horses in the horse racing industry. Ann returned to Iowa and worked in various food service positions. In 1992 she gave birth to her daughter, Karlena Pierce, who now makes her home in Missouri.
Ann enjoyed art work, needle work and BINGO. She loved animals, especially her pet horses, dogs and cats. She enjoyed decorating her home and that of her mothers with lights at Christmas.
Ann died on December 12, 2013 at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa having attained the age of forty-five years, nine months and sixteen days. She was preceded in death by her father and her brother Philip.
She is survived by her mother, Charlotte McDermott of Harlan, Iowa; her sister Dianne and her husband Tim Blum of Portsmouth, Iowa; her brother Richard McDermott and his wife Lisa of Missouri Valley, Iowa; her daughter, Karlena Pierce of Missouri; other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa with Rev. John Frost as Celebrant and Rev. Jim Kleffman as Homilist. Kate Kohorst accompanied vocalist Maryalyce Dotzler. Casket bearers were members of the immediate family. Interment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Portsmouth, Iowa.
