Mary Jane Zaccone was born on July 31, 1936, to Jacob N.Jacobson and Genevieve Gertrude Morrissey in Harlan, Iowa. She graduated from Harlan High School, and in the fall of 1954, in her freshman English class at Creighton University, she met a handsome young man by the name of Martin Zaccone. She and Martin went on to marry on Labor Day, September 2, 1957, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan. Mary Jane then completed her Bachelor of Sociology Degree at Creighton. After Martin completed his pharmacy degree, the newlyweds moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. They relocated to Harlan in 1960 to purchase Pexton Drug Store. Mary Jane focused her attentions on their growing family, but was also able to use her college degree as a social worker at The Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa, for 20 years. Mary Jane was dedicated to her church, as her life was centered around her faith and family. Mary Jane had a soft heart for every cause. She loved to read, play cards, and completed two crossword puzzles a day. She surprised many by her wealth of knowledge on diverse subjects. Her greatest joy was family gatherings and keeping her cookie jar full. In her later years, Mary Jane enjoyed her trips to the casinos, where it is said, she had the gift of luck.
