Kathleen
Wageman - Age 66
Kathleen
Josephine Wageman, daughter of Veryl Knox and
Katherine Wageman, was born on March 19, 1943,
in Omaha, Nebraska. Her mother died during child
birth and Kathleen was raised by her
grandmother, Barbara. Katherine graduated from
St. Boniface Catholic Schools with the class of
1962.
After high school, Kathleen began working at
Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa, as a
nurses aide. She later moved to the Page County
Home where she lived for several years before
becoming a resident at the Clarinda Mental
Hospital.
Kathleen enjoyed spending time talking and
drinking iced tea with her friends and was
always busy going somewhere or doing something.
She never sat in one place for very long. She
also went to sleep every night with her rosary
in her hand.
Kathleen died on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at
Terrace View in Clarinda, Iowa, having attained
the age of sixty-six years, eight months, and
sixteen days. She is preceded in death by her
mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her aunts and uncles;
cousins; other family members and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday,
December 10, 2009, at St. Boniface Catholic
Church in Westphalia, Iowa, with Rev. John
Dorton officiating the 1:00 PM service.
Inurnment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in
Westphalia. 
Brandon W.
Wahling - Age 33
Brandon Wayne Wahling was born on August 26,
1975, to David Wahling and Barbara Bowen in
Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was baptized and
confirmed at Shelby Lutheran Church in Shelby,
Iowa. Brandon attended the AHST school system
and graduated with the Class of 1994.
He enlisted in the United
States Navy and attended the
Journeyman/Electrician Advanced Training school.
He served his country for five years, of which
two were at Camp David, before he was honorably
discharged and returned home.
His first civilian job was
with Interstates Electric in Sioux Center. From
there he moved to South Kansas City Electric and
was presently working at Wachter Electric in
Kansas City.
Brandon’s hobbies included
trap shooting and Nascar racing. He loved going
to concerts and watching the Kansas City Chiefs
and the Iowa State Cyclones play. He was a great
problem solver and could fix just about
anything. He was never afraid to tackle any
project. He loved his family and they were very
important in his life.
Brandon died on Saturday,
November 1, 2008, as a result of a tragic
automobile accident. He had attained the age of
thirty-three years, two months, and six days. He
was preceded in death by his mother, Lorna
Wahling and his grandfathers: Edgar Wahling, Ray
Gans, and Cyrus Monson, Jr.
He is survived by his
daughter Cheyenne Wahling of Shelby, Iowa; his
father David Wahling of Shelby, Iowa; brother
Matthew Sternberg and his wife Janae of Council
Bluffs, Iowa; his grandmothers: Mada Wahling of
Avoca, Iowa and Arline Gans of Irwin, Iowa; his
close friend Jennifer DeVille of Lees Summit,
Missouri; birth mother Barbara Bowen of Texas;
other family members and many friends. He was a
very good father and provider to his daughter,
Cheyenne.
A funeral service was held
on Thursday, November 6, 2008 with Pastor Duane
Anunson officiating the 1:00 PM service at the
Shelby Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa. Honorary
casket bearers were Paul Frazier, Richard
Armstrong, Chuck Landa, Mel Hursey, Steve Allen,
Tom Benson, Ronnie Eggerss, and Kenny Escher.
Serving as casket bearers were Wade Erdmann,
Scott Schowewgerdt, Mark McLaughlin, Ian Monson,
Wade Knoke, Joel Wahing, Dave Dirth, and Alex
Monson. Military rites were held at the Shelby
Cemetery by the Shelby American Legion Post No.
240. 
Lorna R.
Wahling - Age 57
Lorna Rosene
Wahling was born on April 23, 1951, to Cyrus and
Arline (Jensen) Monson in Harlan, Iowa. She was
baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran
Church in Irwin, Iowa. She attended school at
Irwin-Kirkman and went on to Dana College in
Blair, Nebraska, after her graduation.
She was united in
marriage on March 4, 1983 to David Wahling at
the United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa,
where the couple made their home.
They owned and operated
two Dairy Queens, one in Shelby that they bought
in 1985 and then the Harlan Dairy Queen was
purchased in 2006.
Lorna was involved with
her sons and loved to travel and had an
appreciation for flowers. She also enjoyed
spending time at Lake Okoboji and with her
grandchildren. She was very active in supporting
her community and was involved with various
groups: Daughters of the Nile, Eastern Star,
Rebecca Lodge, Shelby County Chamber of
Commerce, and the Iowa DQ Association. She was
very active in her church and proudly served in
any area she was asked.
Lorna died on
Wednesday, September 17, 2008, at Lake Okoboji,
having attained the age of fifty-seven years,
four months, and twenty-five days. She was
preceded in death by her father.
She is survived by her
husband David Wahling of Shelby, Iowa; her sons
Matthew Sternberg and his wife Janae of Council
Bluffs, Iowa and Brandon Wahling of Shelby;
three grandchildren: Cheyenne, Kyle, and Luke;
her sister Lana and her husband Rich Schwieso of
Irwin, Iowa; her brothers Marty Monson of
Lincoln, Nebraska and Jon Gans of Grand Rapids,
Michigan; nieces and nephews; other family
members; and many friends.
Funeral Services were
held on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the
United Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa. Rev.
Duane Anunson officiated the 2:00 PM service
with interment at the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby,
Iowa. Serving as honorary casket bearers were:
Donna Pauley, Barb Hulsebus, Kay Benson, Paula
Becker, Mase Bruck, Sheryl Holloway, Jeanie
Landa, and Carol Logan. Acting as casket bearers
were: Jim Zimmerman, Kenny Escher, Richard
Armstrong, Ian Monson, Alex Monson, and Gene
Monson. 
Lyle D. Walker,
Sr. - Age 93
Lyle
Dale Walker, Sr., son of John O. and Patience
(Pitt) Walker, was born on April 8, 1916, on the
family farm outside of Woodbine, Iowa and was
baptized at Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan,
Iowa. He attended Douglas Hill Country School
east of Woodbine and one year at Woodbine High
School before helping his parents on the family
farm.
Lyle was united in marriage to Myrtle Marie
Peterson in Papillion, Nebraska, on February 24,
1942, which also happened to be Myrtle’s
parents’ anniversary. Six children were born to
this union: Lyle, Jr.; Donna; Dolores; LaVonne;
Linda; and Mary. After their wedding, Lyle and
Myrtle made their home in Harrison County, Iowa.
In 1942, Lyle enlisted in the United States
Army. He attended basic training in Texas and
was stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, Chanute,
Kansas and Salt Lake City, Utah where he
received specialized training as a military
police officer and prison guard. In 1943, Lyle
spent time in France, Belgium, Luxemburg,
Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. On October
27, 1945, Lyle returned to the United States and
was honorably discharged.
After his discharge, Lyle worked on a farm east
of Harlan and later farmed various farms in
Harrison and Shelby Counties. In 1949, Lyle and
Myrtle moved to Shelby County where they
continued to farm until 1963, when they moved
into Harlan.
Lyle was a devoted Christian and loved his
children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed
fishing and hunting, watching and playing
baseball, bowling, looking for antiques and
selling goods at flea markets. Lyle also loved
playing and listening to music.
In February 2009, Lyle became a resident at
Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. While
there, he enjoyed participating in various
activities, including singing the last song at
the prom celebration.
Lyle died on Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Myrtue
Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained
the age of ninety-three years, two months, and
twenty days. He is preceded in death by his
parents, his wife Myrtle, and his siblings:
Chester, Marie, Leonard, Lester, Vester, Albert,
Minnie, and Ruby and his son-in-law David Force.
He is survived by his children: Lyle Walker, Jr.
and his wife Marcia of Harlan; Donna and her
husband Jim Burdick of Chevy Chase, Maryland;
Dolores and her husband Gary Brandt of Council
Bluffs, Iowa; LaVonne Force of Harlan; Linda and
her husband Dennis Hielen of Shenandoah, Iowa;
Mary and her husband Rodney McCumber of Newton,
Iowa; twenty-one grandchildren; thirty-five
great-grandchildren; his sisters Irma Williams
of Logan, Iowa and Velma Vining of Bay City,
Oregon; nieces; nephews; other family members
and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Thursday, July 2,
2009, at First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa,
with Pastor Walter Bernard and Pastor Roger
Manning officiating the 11:00 AM service.
Military Rites were held at the Harlan Cemetery
in Harlan by the Shelby County VFW Post No. 941
and the Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt
Post No. 150. Acting as honorary casket bearers
were: Steven Force, Christopher Hielen, Stephen
Hielen, David Hielen, Michael Brandt, Mike
Dorland, Patrick Hielen, Nicholas Hielen, and
Gary Patrick. Serving as casket bearers were:
Joe Powell, Jeremy Walker, Jim Powell, Dan
Martin, Aaron Russell, Jim Burdick, and Dave
Martin. 
Claire
L. (Rossmann) Walter - Age 99
Claire
Lenore Walter, the daughter of Eugene E. and Lenore
(Stinger) Mickel, was born on July 24, 1908 in
Walnut, Iowa. She attended school in Walnut and
graduated from Walnut High School. After graduation
she taught rural school for three years and then
taught third and fourth grades in Minden, Iowa for
two years.
Claire was united in marriage to Wilbert Rossmann on
June 29, 1932 at the Evangelical Lutheran Parsonage
in Walnut, Iowa. After their marriage they moved to
a farm north of Walnut. Their son Jack was born on
December 4, 1936. They purchased a farm near Corley,
Iowa in 1936 and moved into the farmhouse in 1937.
In 1954, Jack graduated from high school in Harlan,
Iowa and attended Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. It was
then, in 1965, that Claire went back to teaching.
She taught Title 1 reading, a special program set up
by the government, in the Harlan Community School
System and remained there for eight years. After
Wilbert's death in September of 1984, Claire moved
to Peace Haven Retirement Home. While living at
Peace Haven she met Harry Walter. They were united
in marriage on February 14, 1987. Harry died in
August of 1987.
Claire
died at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa on Tuesday,
September 25, 2007 having attained the age of ninty-nine
years, two months and one day. She was preceded in death by
her parents, her husbands Wilbert and Harry; one brother,
Fred Mickel and four sisters: Gladys Fell, Aletha Paulsen,
Irene Norton and Maine Larsen.
Survivors include her son, Jack Rossmann, and his
wife Marty of St. Paul, Minnesota; three
grandchildren: Ann Rossmann of Lakeville, Minnesota;
Sarah and her husband Fred Deschamps of St. Paul,
Minnesota and Charles Rossmann and his wife Kathleen
of Birmingham, Alabama; great grandson, Ramsey
Rossmann; three great granddaughters: Emma and Lily
Deschamps and Carmen Rossmann; nieces, nephews,
other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 29, 2007
at the Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut with Rev.
Gail Muckey officiating. Burial was in Layton Township
Cemetery. Those serving as casket bearers were Dan Riessen,
Fred Deschamps, Greg Boysen, John Hamilton, Bruce Jensen and
James Petersen. 
Mary "Do"
Waltz - Age 83
Mary "Do" Waltz,
daughter of James and Adeline (Wilmes) Doyle,
was born on April 4, 1926, in Neola, Iowa. She
was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s
Catholic Church in Neola and graduated with the
class of 1944 from St. Joseph’s High School in
Neola.
After high school, Do entered the Sisters of
Humility Convent at Ottumwa Heights in Ottumwa,
Iowa, where she received her education in
teaching. Do taught schools in Minnesota, Des
Moines and Grinnell, Iowa. After receiving her
Masters Degree, Do became the principal at
Sacred Heart Catholic School in West Des Moines,
Iowa. During the summers, Do would volunteer to
teach under privileged children in distressed
areas of Mississippi.
On June 4, 1976, Do was united in marriage to
Vincent Joseph Waltz in Des Moines, Iowa. The
couple made a home for several foster children
including Chella Papish as well as Jeremy, John,
and Jason Wyatt who lived with them from
childhood. After their wedding, Do and Vincent
continued to make their home at Rock Creek Lake
before moving to Harlan.
Do and Vincent moved to the Elm Crest Assisted
Living in Harlan in December 2005. After Vincent
died on September 8, 2007, Do remained at Elm
Crest Assisted Living but later moved to Elm
Crest Retirement Community. It was there that
she died on Saturday, October 17, 2009, having
attained the age of eighty-three years, six
months and thirteen days. She is preceded in
death by her parents; her husband, Vincent; her
siblings: Bob, Catherine, Phil, Margaret, Joan,
and Dick.
She is survived by her three foster sons: Jeremy
Wyatt and John Wyatt both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa
and Jason Wyatt of Panama, Iowa; her sister Mary
Ellen (Bill) Hagedorn of Carmichael, California;
seventeen nieces and nephews; other family
members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday,
October 20, 2009, at St. Mary’s of the
Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Rev.
John Dorton celebrated the 11:00 AM service and
Rev. Bob Hoefler was the homilist. Interment was
held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Panama with John
Wyatt, Jeremy Wyatt, Jason Wyatt, Josh Schmitz,
Tom Crowley, and Matt Schmitz serving as casket
bearers. 
Vincent
Waltz - 72
Vincent Joseph Waltz was
born on May 19, 1935, to Leo and Cecelia (Goeser) Waltz in
Panama, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary of
the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. He attended St.
Mary’s High School and joined the United States Marine Corps
on October 15, 1956. He achieved the rank of Corporal before
his honorable discharge in September of 1958. Upon his
return to Iowa, he entered Conception Abbey in Conception,
Missouri, and later transferred to Mount Bernard’s Seminary
and was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1966.
After being ordained, he was assigned to Assumption Church
in Granger as an assistant pastor. The next year, he went to
St. Michael’s in Harlan and then in 1968 to Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in West Des Moines, Iowa, where he stayed
until 1974.
On June 4, 1975, Vincent was united in marriage to Mary "Do"
Doyle in Des Moines, Iowa. The couple had three foster
children: Jeremy, John, and Jason Wyatt. Vincent continued
his ministry at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton,
Iowa, from 1983 to 1994. He was also on the pastoral staff
at the Newton Correctional Facility in Newton, Iowa, and the
Iowa Prison for Women at Mitchellville, Iowa.
Vincent’s hobbies were art and running. He loved to paint
and did several still-life portraits. He was also a great
potter, making clay pieces that he fired and painted
himself. He participated in the U. S. National Senior Sports
Classic and the Iowa Games, winning awards in running events
during both competitions.
Vincent and Do moved to the Elm Crest Assisted Living
housing in Harlan in December of 2005. It was there that he
died on Saturday, September 8, 2007, having attained the age
of seventy-two years, three months, and twenty days. He was
preceded in death by his parents and his sister Geraldine.
He is survived by his wife Do Waltz of Harlan; his foster
children: Jeremy and John Wyatt, both of Grinnell, Iowa, and
Jason Wyatt of Panama, Iowa; his brother Gerald Waltz and
his wife Janice of Portsmouth, Iowa, nieces and nephews,
other family members, and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, September
13, 2007, with celebrant Rev. Bob Schoemann officiating the
10:30 AM service at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic
Church in Panama, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were:
Derek Schmitz, Matt Schmitz, Josh Schmitz, Jason Wyatt, Paul
Waltz, and Tim Waltz. Interment was held at St. Mary’s
Cemetery in Panama. 
Darlene Waples - Age 72
Darlene
Marie Waples, the daughter of Elmer and
Vera Vredenburgh Blunt, was born on
February 25, 1936 in Little Sioux, Iowa.
She attended school in Missouri Valley,
Iowa and graduated with the class of
1954.
Darlene was united in marriage to Virgil
Waples on October 16, 1954 in Missouri
Valley, Iowa. To this union two
daughters were born: Ann Marie and
Penny. The family moved to Avoca in 1963
and after making their home in Avoca,
Darlene became active in square dancing
and enjoyed dancing with the Walnut
Square Dancers. She had a very good
sense of humor and loved a good joke.
When her mother became ill she became
her top priority and Darlene became her
caretaker. She enjoyed gardening and
canned many of her vegetables. She
enjoyed being with her family and
grandchildren and loved being together
at Christmas. Two of her favorite
pastimes were crocheting and reading.
She was a member of LVFWA Wesley R.
Miller 8998.
Darlene died on Saturday, August 9, 2008
at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in
Avoca, Iowa having attained the age of
seventy-two years, five months and
fifteen days. She is preceded in death
by her husband Virgil, who died in 1995;
her grandson, Shawn Stalder and three
brothers: Donald, Harlan and Marvin.
Survivors include her daughters: Ann
Marie and her husband Larry Stalder of
Red Oak, Iowa; Penny and her husband Ben
Meysenburg of Des Moines, Iowa; four
grandchildren: Shane and Courtney
Stalder and Abby and Holly Meysenburg;
one sister: Arlene and her husband
Rollin Hansen of Murray, Nebraska;
brother Marrion Blunt and his wife Judy
of Fairbury, Nebraska and a
sister-in-law "Chuckie" Blunt of Onamia,
Minnesota; besides other relatives and
many friends.
Graveside services were held Tuesday,
August 12, 2008, at Graceland Cemetery
in Avoca, Iowa. Pastor Nancy Ross-Hullinger
officiated the 2:00 PM service.

Milton "Fat" Watson - 91
Milton Watson was born on November 3, 1915, on a farm southeast of Persia, Iowa, to James and Clara (Bleyhl) Watson. He attended elementary school at Excelsior country school outside of Persia until eighth grade. He then attended Persia High School and for his senior year he transferred to Logan High School in order to receive Normal Training, graduating as a member of the class of 1934. After graduation, he worked as a teacher for several years at schools near Dunlap (North Picuayne) and later near Persia (Spring Creek).
Milton was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart,
Velma Harmsen, on May 1, 1937, in Logan, Iowa. Velma and
Milton had two children: Larry and Lynette.
Shortly after their marriage, Milton began farming on the
farm they rented and eventually purchased. They resided on
this farm from 1938 until moving to Persia in 1985. During
these years of farming, Milton also managed Bowles Grain
Elevator for several years and worked as a crop adjuster for
Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company for nearly eighteen
years. He continued to assist his son Larry in farming until
2004. Farming was truly his life.
Milton was hard working and dedicated to his family, his
friends, and his church. He taught Sunday School at the
Methodist Church in Persia for many years and held various
offices in the church.
He took great delight in his grandchildren and great
grandchildren. He enjoyed being with them and they truly
enjoyed being with "Grandpa Fat or Papa Fat", as they
affectionately referred to him.
Milton died on Wednesday, June 20, 2007, having attained the
age of ninety-one years, seven months, and seventeen days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Velma
(1996), brothers and sisters: Lucille, Byron, James, and
Monroe, and his great-granddaughter, Hannah deGroot.
He is survived by his son Larry Watson and his wife, Carol,
of Persia, Iowa, and his daughter Lynette and her husband
Dr. Marvin Dvorak of Omaha, Nebraska, seven grandchildren,
fourteen great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family
members, and friends.
A funeral service was held on Monday, June 25, 2007, at the
United Methodist Church in Persia, Iowa. Pastor Orris Drake
officiated the 10:00 AM service. Casket bearers were Robert
Bradley, Kent Floerchinger, William Oloff, Steve Stamp,
David Dvorak, and Jay Handbury with interment being held at
Valley View Cemetery in Persia, Iowa.
