Ann E. Wageman - Age 91
Ann Elizabeth Wageman,
the daughter of Peter and Mary Fitzpatrick Folz, was born on October 13,
1913, in Denison, Iowa, where she was raised and attended elementary
school at the Catholic parochial school there and later the Denison
Public School. After receiving her education and the death of her
father, Ann was employed at the old Armour Plant in Denison where she
wrapped butter. They also processed chickens at the plant which burned
down several years ago.
On December 27, 1937, Ann was united in marriage to Henry "Hank" Wageman
of Defiance, Iowa. After their marriage, they made their home on the
Wageman family farm where they continued to live and raise their family.
They were the parents of four children: Karen, who died in infancy and a
son who also died in infancy, Sharon and Norma. Ann helped her husband
pick corn by hand, do livestock chores and raised chickens, along with
keeping up with the housework. Ann was a good homemaker and always had a
garden and canned a lot when raising her family. She and her husband
enjoyed going to dances. After Henry became ill, they moved from the
farm to an apartment in Manilla, Iowa. After his death in 1993, Ann
continued to make her home in Manilla, moving to the Manilla Manor in
2001.
While a resident at Manilla Manor, Ann enjoyed playing Bingo, watching
television, word search puzzles and visiting with her family. Her
religion was very important to her as she attended services weekly.
Ann died on Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at the Manilla Manor in Manilla,
Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-one years, five months and
twenty-four days. In addition to her parents, her two children, and her
husband, Ann was preceded in death by her brother and sister, Don Folz
and Ines Wisler.
Survivors include her children: Sharon and her husband, Jack Wieland of
Springtown, Texas; Norma and her husband, Jim Gross of Manilla, Iowa;
nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren;
her sister, Eva Olsen of Seattle, Washington; her brothers-in-law, Elmer
Wageman and his wife, Boots of Defiance, Iowa; Ed Wageman of Pelican
Lake, Minnesota; her sisters-in-law: Verdella Bertelsen of Minneapolis,
Minnesota; Ann Witherby of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Josephine Marshall of
Dunlap, Iowa; Leona Buman of Harlan, Iowa; other relatives and a great
many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated on Saturday, April 9, 2005,
at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa, at 11:00 A.M. with
Rev. Michael Berner as the celebrant and Rev. Robert Gralapp as the
concelebrant. Interment was in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Defiance,
Iowa, with Patty Short, Tammy Neddermeyer and Christy Gross serving as
honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were Jeff Wieland,
Rick Gross, Craig Wieland, Doug Gross, Steve Gross, and Bruce Gross.
Margaret Jean “Chic” Wageman - 78
Margaret Jean "Chic"

Margaret Jean was

on the farm. She was
a wonderful cook and
her grandchildren
thought her mashed
potatoes and gravy
were the best.
Chic enjoyed
spending time with
her grandchildren
and traveling to
their sporting
events. One of her
favorite hobbies was
bowling, and she was
one of the few women
who bowled 700+
series in Harlan.
She also liked to
golf and play cards,
especially 500 and
rummy.
Chic became a
resident of Little
Flower Haven in
Earling in October
2004. She died on
September 6, 2006,
at Myrtue Memorial
Hospital in Harlan,
Iowa, having
attained the age of
seventy-eight years,
ten months and
twenty-four days. In
addition to her
parents, she was
preceded in death by
her brothers: Cyril,
Francis, and Alf
Schomers.

Mariette J. Wageman - Age 74
Mariette Jose
Wageman, the daughter of Henry and Maria Ragole Willemyns,
was born on June 13, 1931 in Zulte, Belgium. She was
baptized in a Catholic Church in Belgium. Mariette attended
school in Belgium and France. At the age of sixteen, both of
Mariettes parents died. She lived in Belgium until the age
of 18 when she and her little sister, Lily, set sail by
themselves to this foreign land of the United States. They
landed on Eillis Island, New York, not knowing anyone and
not being able to speak the language. They made their way to
Omaha, Nebraska where they were able to live with an aunt
and uncle for a few years. She was employed at a drug store
in Omaha, Nebraska for three years.
Mariette was united in marriage to Charles Joseph Wageman on
November 7, 1953 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in
Westphalia, Iowa. Three children were born to this union.
After their marriage Charles and Mariette continued to farm
the Wageman family farm. Mariette also worked at Variety
Distributors for thirty-two years retiring in February 2005.
Mariette enjoyed crocheting, baking and being with her
family. She was able to return to Belgium in 1979 to visit
her nephew, Harry.
Mariette died on Wednesday, December 7, 2005, having
attained the age of seventy-four years, five months and
twenty-four days. She is preceded in death by her parents,
her husband, Charles, who died in 2001, son, Robert, brother
and sister: Alfred Willemyns and Lily Anastasi.
She is survived by her children: Charlette and her husband
Dwight Bierbaum of Griswold, Iowa and Cynthia and her
husband Russ Ranniger of Manning, Iowa; seven grandchildren:
Shelly Asbee, Tammy Dill, Valerie Bierbaum, Melanie Bierbaum,
Jacqueline Ranniger, Jessica Ranniger and Ann Ranniger; two
great grandchildren; Randall and Zachary; her brother Robert
Willemyns and his wife Rose of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces,
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, December
10, 2005 at 1:00 PM at St. Boniface Catholic Church in
Westphalia, Iowa with Rev. Robert Hoefler and Rev. John
Dorton as the celebrant and concelebrant. Serving as casket
bearers were Tammy Dill, Shelly Asbee, Valerie Bierbaum,
Jacqueline Ranniger, Jessica Ranniger, Ann Ranniger and
Melanie Bierbaum. Interment was held in the St. Boniface
Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa.

Claire L. (Rossmann)
Walter - Age 99
Claire Lenore Walter,
the daughter of Eugene E. and Lenore (Stinger)
Mickel, was born on July 24, 1908 in Walnut, Iowa.
She attended school in Walnut and graduated from
Walnut High School. After graduation she taught
rural school for three years and then taught third
and fourth grades in Minden, Iowa for two years.
Claire was united in marriage to Wilbert Rossmann on June
29, 1932 at the Evangelical Lutheran Parsonage in Walnut,
Iowa. After their marriage they moved to a farm north of
Walnut. Their son Jack was born on December 4, 1936. They
purchased a farm near Corley, Iowa in 1936 and moved into
the farmhouse in 1937. In 1954, Jack graduated from high
school in Harlan, Iowa and attended Iowa State in Ames,
Iowa. It was then, in 1965, that Claire went back to
teaching. She taught Title 1 reading, a special program set
up by the government, in the Harlan Community School System
and remained there for eight years. After Wilbert's death in
September of 1984, Claire moved to Peace Haven Retirement
Home. While living at Peace Haven she met Harry Walter. They
were united in marriage on February 14, 1987. Harry died in
August of 1987.
Claire died at Salem
Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa on Tuesday, September 25,
2007 having attained the age of ninty-nine years, two months
and one day. She was preceded in death by her parents, her
husbands Wilbert and Harry; one brother, Fred Mickel and
four sisters: Gladys Fell, Aletha Paulsen, Irene Norton and
Maine Larsen.
Survivors include her son, Jack Rossmann, and his wife Marty
of St. Paul, Minnesota; three grandchildren: Ann Rossmann of
Lakeville, Minnesota; Sarah and her husband Fred Deschamps
of St. Paul, Minnesota and Charles Rossmann and his wife
Kathleen of Birmingham, Alabama; great grandson, Ramsey
Rossmann; three great granddaughters: Emma and Lily
Deschamps and Carmen Rossmann; nieces, nephews, other
relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 29, 2007
at the Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut with Rev.
Gail Muckey officiating. Burial was in Layton Township
Cemetery. Those serving as casket bearers were Dan Riessen,
Fred Deschamps, Greg Boysen, John Hamilton, Bruce Jensen and
James Petersen.
Vincent
Waltz - 72
Vincent Joseph Waltz was
born on May 19, 1935, to Leo and Cecelia (Goeser) Waltz in
Panama, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary of
the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. He attended St.
Mary’s High School and joined the United States Marine Corps
on October 15, 1956. He achieved the rank of Corporal before
his honorable discharge in September of 1958. Upon his
return to Iowa, he entered Conception Abbey in Conception,
Missouri, and later transferred to Mount Bernard’s Seminary
and was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1966.
After being ordained, he was assigned to Assumption Church
in Granger as an assistant pastor. The next year, he went to
St. Michael’s in Harlan and then in 1968 to Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in West Des Moines, Iowa, where he stayed
until 1974.
On June 4, 1975, Vincent was united in marriage to Mary "Do"
Doyle in Des Moines, Iowa. The couple had three foster
children: Jeremy, John, and Jason Wyatt. Vincent continued
his ministry at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton,
Iowa, from 1983 to 1994. He was also on the pastoral staff
at the Newton Correctional Facility in Newton, Iowa, and the
Iowa Prison for Women at Mitchellville, Iowa.
Vincent’s hobbies were art and running. He loved to paint
and did several still-life portraits. He was also a great
potter, making clay pieces that he fired and painted
himself. He participated in the U. S. National Senior Sports
Classic and the Iowa Games, winning awards in running events
during both competitions.
Vincent and Do moved to the Elm Crest Assisted Living
housing in Harlan in December of 2005. It was there that he
died on Saturday, September 8, 2007, having attained the age
of seventy-two years, three months, and twenty days. He was
preceded in death by his parents and his sister Geraldine.
He is survived by his wife Do Waltz of Harlan; his foster
children: Jeremy and John Wyatt, both of Grinnell, Iowa, and
Jason Wyatt of Panama, Iowa; his brother Gerald Waltz and
his wife Janice of Portsmouth, Iowa, nieces and nephews,
other family members, and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, September
13, 2007, with celebrant Rev. Bob Schoemann officiating the
10:30 AM service at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic
Church in Panama, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were:
Derek Schmitz, Matt Schmitz, Josh Schmitz, Jason Wyatt, Paul
Waltz, and Tim Waltz. Interment was held at St. Mary’s
Cemetery in Panama.
James "Jim"Dennis Warren - Age
68
James "Jim" Dennis Warren, the son of Herman and Evelyn (Shepard) Warren, was born on June 17, 1938 in Des Moines, Iowa. Jim attended elementary school at Saylor Center in Des Moines. During the war years, Jim, along with his mother, sister, and brother rode a church bus to get to church as his dad was serving in the U. S. Navy. It was at that church that the seeds of salvation were planted by a dedicated Sunday School teacher. In 1949, when Billy Graham held his first city-wide campaign in Des Moines, Jim went forward and accepted the Lord as his Savior.
Jim attended the Warren Harding Junior High and East High Schools in Des Moines. During his senior year of high school, he moved with his family to rural Runnells and graduated from Runnells High School in 1956. Immediately after high school he joined the U. S. Navy. It was during his two years of active duty in the Navy that he felt God’s call on his life to become a minister. After serving his time in the Navy, he attended and graduated from Omaha Baptist Bible College in Omaha, Nebraska. It was there that he met Helen Sorensen. They were married on September 17, 1960, at Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa. To this union two daughters were born: Heidi and Kiersten.
In 1971, Jim became a missionary serving with Baptist International Missions. In February of 1972, their family moved to Hawaii to begin mission work there. They lived in Hawaii nearly twenty-nine years. In June of 2000, Jim and Helen returned to Iowa to be nearer to family and to help with family needs. In May of 2002, Jim became the Associate Pastor of First Baptist Church in Harlan where he served until God called him to his heavenly home.
Jim died on Tuesday, December 26, 2006, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, having attained the age of sixty-eight years, six months, and nine days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Evelyn Warren. He is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Helen Warren of Harlan, Iowa; two daughters: Heidi and her husband Dan Lotenschtein of Harlan, Iowa, and Kiersten Warren and her husband Kirk Acevedo Warren of Los Angeles, California; six grandchildren: Misti Traya, Madison, Charlotte, Jackson, and Violet Lotenschtein, and Scarlett Acevedo; one sister, Colleen and her husband Jim Beattie of Runnells, Iowa and one brother, Stephen and his wife Jean Warren of Runnells, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and countless friends.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, December 29, 2006 at First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Gundar Lamberts officiating the 10:30 service. Interment was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, with honorary casket bearers Jim Beattie and Steve Warren and casket bearers Danny Warren, Warren Beattie, Dan Lotenschtein, Danny Hutchinson, Rev. David Hutchinson, and Rev. Steve Hollenbeck.
Milton "Fat" Watson - 91
Milton Watson was born on November 3, 1915, on a farm southeast of Persia, Iowa, to James and Clara (Bleyhl) Watson. He attended elementary school at Excelsior country school outside of Persia until eighth grade. He then attended Persia High School and for his senior year he transferred to Logan High School in order to receive Normal Training, graduating as a member of the class of 1934. After graduation, he worked as a teacher for several years at schools near Dunlap (North Picuayne) and later near Persia (Spring Creek).
Milton was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart,
Velma Harmsen, on May 1, 1937, in Logan, Iowa. Velma and
Milton had two children: Larry and Lynette.
Shortly after their marriage, Milton began farming on the
farm they rented and eventually purchased. They resided on
this farm from 1938 until moving to Persia in 1985. During
these years of farming, Milton also managed Bowles Grain
Elevator for several years and worked as a crop adjuster for
Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company for nearly eighteen
years. He continued to assist his son Larry in farming until
2004. Farming was truly his life.
Milton was hard working and dedicated to his family, his
friends, and his church. He taught Sunday School at the
Methodist Church in Persia for many years and held various
offices in the church.
He took great delight in his grandchildren and great
grandchildren. He enjoyed being with them and they truly
enjoyed being with "Grandpa Fat or Papa Fat", as they
affectionately referred to him.
Milton died on Wednesday, June 20, 2007, having attained the
age of ninety-one years, seven months, and seventeen days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Velma
(1996), brothers and sisters: Lucille, Byron, James, and
Monroe, and his great-granddaughter, Hannah deGroot.
He is survived by his son Larry Watson and his wife, Carol,
of Persia, Iowa, and his daughter Lynette and her husband
Dr. Marvin Dvorak of Omaha, Nebraska, seven grandchildren,
fourteen great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family
members, and friends.
A funeral service was held on Monday, June 25, 2007, at the
United Methodist Church in Persia, Iowa. Pastor Orris Drake
officiated the 10:00 AM service. Casket bearers were Robert
Bradley, Kent Floerchinger, William Oloff, Steve Stamp,
David Dvorak, and Jay Handbury with interment being held at
Valley View Cemetery in Persia, Iowa.
Rose E. Wear - Age 83
Rose Ellen Wear, the daughter of
John and Anna (Von Tersh)
Gayman, was born on December 21, 1923 in Neola, Iowa. Rose
was baptized, received her First Holy Communion, and was
confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Neola, Iowa.
She attended both grade school and high school at St.
Joseph’s Catholic School in Neola.
Rose was united in marriage to Francis Wear on
January 2, 1943 at St. Patrick’s Church in Neola, Iowa. They
were the parents of seven children. They farmed in the
Portsmouth, Iowa for five years, then moved to Logan, Iowa
area, where they farmed for sixteen years. Rose and Francis
then moved to a farm northwest of Hancock, Iowa and farmed
there for fourteen years before retiring in 1980 when they
moved to their home in Avoca. Rose was a member of St.
Mary’s Catholic Church in Avoca where she was a custodian of
the church from 1982-1990. Rose enjoyed gardening, bird
watching and walking.
Rose died on Saturday, March 24, 2007 at
Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley having attained the
age of eighty-three years, three months and three days. She
is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant
daughter, Rosemary; two brothers, Leo and Alex Gayman; and
three sisters: Elizabeth Bendon, Cecilia Wear, and Agnes
Wessel.
She is survived by her children: Terry Wear of Springfield,
Virginia; Jane and her husband Allen Erlbacher of Earling,
Iowa; Marilyn and her husband Vern McDaniel of Bentonville,
Arkansas; Loretta Wear of Jonesborough, Tennessee; Sheila
Neff of Urbandale, Iowa and Maureen and her husband Daniel
Coffman of Rosemount, Minnesota; twenty-one grandchildren;
thirty-one great grandchildren; one sister, Mathilda McEvoy
of Logan, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many
friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on
Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at 11:000 AM at St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Avoca with Father Robert Harris as the
Celebrant, Father Mike Berner as the Homilist and Father
John Frost as the Co-Celebrant. Serving as Honorary casket
bearers were Mick Denning, Allan Erlbacher, George Wear,
Charles Wear, Vern McDaniel and Edward Schafer, Sr. Serving
as casket bearers were Travis Neff, Michael Erlbacher,
Jeffrey Cocking, Mark Erlbacher, Marc Ambrose and Steve
Erlbacher. Interment was held in the Graceland Cemetery,
Avoca, Iowa.
Donald
Eugene Weddle
- Age 73
Donald "Don" Weddle was born on June 22, 1933, to Sanford
and Margaritte (Burns) Weddle in Sioux City, Iowa. He was
baptized, confirmed, and served as an alter boy at St.
Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City, Iowa. Don attended
St. Boniface Catholic School through the eighth grade and
continued his education at Woodrow Wilson High School in
Sioux City where he obtained his GED.
Don enlisted in the United States Army on October 11, 1951,
and served his country during the Korean War. After serving
for two years on active duty, Don then transferred to the
United States Army Reserves to complete his eight years of
service.
On April 2, 1957,
Don was united in marriage to Maryann Delaney in Sioux City.
Three children were born to this union: one son, Mark, and
two daughters, Della and Donna.
Don was employed
at the Oakland Beef plant in Oakland, Iowa, for ten years.
He started working at Variety Distributors in Harlan, Iowa,
in 1989 and was employed there until he retired in 2004.
Don passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2007, at his home
in Harlan having attained the age of seventy-three years and
eight months. He was preceded in death by his parents,
Sanford and Margaritte, his brother Russel Weddle, and his
sister Lorraine Ryder.
He is survived by
his wife of forty-nine years, Maryann Weddle of Harlan; his
son Mark Weddle of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his daughters Della
Gardner of Defiance, Iowa, and Donna Weddle of Harlan; his
brothers and sisters: Lois and her husband Hank Buletti of
Greenfield, California, Jerry Weddle of Denver, Colorado,
Lavonne Smith of California, Patricia Sherman of Stacy,
Minnesota, Kay and her husband Ron Simoni of Chippewa Falls,
Wisconsin, Jim and his wife Carol Weddle of Council Bluffs,
Iowa, and Judy Saddler of Palm Springs, California, two
grandsons: Andrew Hansen and Adam Weddle; nieces, nephews,
other family members, and friends.
A Memorial Service was held on Monday, February 26, 2007 at
the Abundant Life Church in Harlan, Iowa with Pastor Jeff
Erlemeier officiating the 11:00 AM ceremony. Serving as
casket bearers were Alvin Kite and Rodger Petersen. Military
Rites were held by Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 and the
Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 at the
Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
Ruby Wehr - Age 89
Ruby Marie Wehr, the daughter of
William and Lucinda (Tague)
McKeighan, was born June 1,
1916, at Portsmouth, Iowa. She
was baptized and confirmed at
St. Mary’s Catholic Church in
Portsmouth. Ruby attended
country school at Portsmouth.
On December 2, 1933, Ruby was
united in marriage to Ambrose W.
Wehr at St. Mary’s Catholic
Church in Portsmouth. After
their marriage, the couple
resided near Portsmouth, Iowa.
To this union, four children
were born to this union: Geri,
Veryl, William and Larry. Ruby
was employed at area post
offices as a postal clerk.
Ambrose died in 1984. After his
death, Ruby continued to make
her home in Portsmouth.
Ruby was a member of St. Mary’s
Catholic Church and enjoyed
spending time with her family
and friends and making crafts.
Ruby became a resident of the
Elm Crest Retirement Community
in Harlan, Iowa, in March of
2002. It was there that she died
on Saturday, April 22, 2006,
having attained the age of
eighty-nine years, ten months
and twenty-one days. In addition
to her parents, and her husband,
Ambrose, Ruby was preceded in
death by a son, Veryl and her
brother and sisters: William
McKeighan, Gertrude Kays, Ruth
Burgin, and Alice Christensen.

Esther K. Weihs - 83
Esther Kathryn
Weihs, the daughter of Henry and
Rose Mueller Graeve, was born on
October 17, 1922, at Earling,
Iowa. She was baptized and
confirmed at St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Earling,
Iowa. Esther attended St.
Joseph’s Catholic School.
On September 26, 1944, Esther
was united in marriage to Urban
Musich at St. Joseph’s Catholic

children were born to this
union: Bill, Mary Jane, James,
Duane, Ann, Rick, Margaret and
Mark. After their marriage, they
resided in Earling until 1952,
when they moved to Harlan, Iowa.
In 1970, the couple moved to
Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1975,
Esther was united in marriage to
Franklin Weihs at Council
Bluffs, Iowa, where they resided
until moving to Harlan, Iowa, in
November of 1987. Frank died on
September 9, 1994.
Esther was a member of St.
Michael’s Catholic Church in
Harlan, Iowa. She worked in
retail sales, at Western Iowa
Pork, and was a cook at a
nursing home in Council Bluffs
and that is where she was
employed the longest.
Esther died on Tuesday, June 27,
2006, at Myrtue Memorial
Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, having
attained the age of eighty-three
years, eight months, and ten
days. In addition to her
parents, and her husband, Frank,
Esther was preceded in death by
a daughter, Ann, and her
brothers and sisters: Alfonse,
William, Raymond, Harry and
Charles Graeve, Rita Panke, and
Margaret Tedrow.

the celebrant. Interment was in
the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan,
Iowa, with Mark Musich, Jr.
serving as a honorary casket
bearer. Serving as casket
bearers were Mark Jirkovsky, Dan
Musich, Shane Walston, Dylan
Parkhurst, Jacob Musich and
Bradley Freund.
John H. Weiland - Age 95
John
Henry Weiland, the son of Chris
and Mary Kuhl Weiland, was born
on the family farm in Union
Township on June 20, 1909. He
was baptized and confirmed at
St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and
attended school at St. Joseph’s
Catholic School in Earling,
Iowa.
On April 13, 1931, John was
united in marriage to Sylvia
Schmitz at St. Boniface Catholic
Church in Westphalia, Iowa. They
became the parents of six
children. After their marriage,
John and Sylvia farmed on the
family farm formerly owned by
John’s father and grandfather
until they retired and moved
into Earling in 1977. He also
drove school bus for the Harlan
Community School District for
many years. Sylvia died on March
20, 1996, one month before their
sixty-fifth wedding anniversary.
John was a member of St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church in
Earling, Iowa and was a 4th
Degree member of the Luke E.
Hart Assembly, Knights of
Columbus Earling Council No.
1741 and its Chalice Club, and
as of 2004, he was the oldest
living member, having been a
member of Council 1741 for
seventy-six years. He was a
Yankee fan and loved to travel.
John was able to visit the
Baseball Hall of Fame in
Cooperstown, New York as well as
attend a New York Yankees
baseball game. He liked to visit
with people over morning coffee.
John enjoyed dancing and
gardening. His favorite
expression was, "what would
people think?"
John died on Monday, October 11,
2004, at Myrtue Memorial
Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, having
attained the age of ninety-five
years, three months and
twenty-one days. In addition to
his parents, and his wife,
Sylvia, John was preceded in
death by his brothers, Ivo, Art
and Dewey; two grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his children:
Bernice and her husband Ron Blum
of Omaha, Nebraska; Jack Weiland
and his wife Sharon of
Springtown, Texas; Bonnie and
her husband George Kenkel of
Earling, Iowa; Ken Weiland of

A Mass of Christian Burial was

14, 2004, at St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa
at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Michael
Berner as the celebrant.
Interment was in St. Joseph’s
Cemetery in Earling, Iowa, with

Walter Wendt - 92
Walter Herman Wendt, son of
Gustave and Marie (Noller) Wendt, was born on April 12,
1915, in Avoca, Iowa and was baptized at First German
Lutheran Church in Avoca. He grew up on his parent's farm
and attended New Boston Township School near Avoca. Walter
completed his education when he joined the United States
Navy.
Walter served in the Navy for three years. After his
honorable discharge, Walter returned to the Avoca area and
worked on various farms around Avoca and Harlan including
the farm of Wendell and Virginia Lytle near Harlan. He later
moved to Omaha and began working at the Omaha Livestock for
over twenty years. While in Omaha, Walter became a member of
St. Lukes Lutheran Church.
Walter died on Thursday, July 26, 2007 at Omaha Nursing and
Rehab in Omaha, Nebraska, having attained the age of
ninety-two years three months and fourteen days. He is
preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers:
Oscar, Ernest, and Robert.
He is survived by his two sisters: Laura Shephard of
Bellevue, Nebraska, and Phyllis Staub of Fountain,
Minnesota; nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, July 28, 2007 at
Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa. Pastor Dennis
Reich officiated the 1:30 PM service. Serving as casket
bearers were: Jack Shephard, John Shephard, Roger
Brinkerhoff, Dick Stone, and John Hoffman.
Caryl West
Caryl West was born on June 3,
1936, one of six children born to Frank and Mabel (Berg)
Heilesen of Harlan, Iowa. She grew up on the family farm and
attended country school until the eighth grade when the
family moved into Harlan. She graduated from Harlan High
School with the Class of 1954 and was very active in the
music department. After graduation, she worked at several
businesses in Harlan, including the Harlan Chamber of
Commerce and the Shelby County Bank.
On
March 12, 1955, she was united in marriage to Gene West of
Harlan. Four children were born to this union: Jennifer,
Janice, James, and Julie. They loved to travel and visit
their children. They visited all fifty states, including a
drive from coast to coast. Before Gene’s death in 2005, she
accompanied him to many corvette restoration events,
athletic events, and participated in outdoor activities like
snow skiing, gardening, and fishing. Caryl belonged to the
Literary Club and loved to play bridge with her friends. For
her own enjoyment Caryl kept journals, wrote stories and
poems.
Caryl
was a member of the Rainbow for Girls, the Bethel Baptist
Church and the United Methodist Church, in Harlan. She was
an active member of the United Methodist Women’s Circle and
participated in many church activities. For many years,
Caryl volunteered at the Elm Crest Retirement Home serving
as president and as organizer for the soup and pie supper.
Caryl
was known for her selflessness and she lived her life caring
about other people as evidenced by her involvement with
numerous volunteer activites in the community. She will be
remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, neighbor,
and friend.
Caryl
died on Sunday, February 3, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center
in Harlan, having attained the age of seventy-one years and
eight months. She was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband Gene, her daughter Julie, her brothers Richard and
Donald Heilesen, and her sister Bette Sorenson.
Caryl
is survived by her children: Jennifer and her husband Peter
Dyer of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Janice and her husband
Bob Powers of Poquoson, Virginia, and James West and his
wife Deb of Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren: Matt, Ben,
Allison, Lauren, Jacob, and Hunter; her brother Frank
Heilesen of Santa Rosa, California; her sister Evelyn Plumb
of Leawood, Kansas; nieces and nephews; other family members
and many friends.
A
funeral service for Caryl was held on Wednesday, February 6,
2008, with Pastor Walter Bowen and Pastor Donna Ewert
officiating the 11:00 AM service. Casket bearers were Bruce
Heilesen, Rodney Nordby, Tim Jacobsen, Cy Monson, Mark
Jacobs, and John Nordby with interment at the Harlan
Cemetery.
Gene H. West - Age 72
Lugene H. "Gene" West, the son of
Verne and Viola Pauley West, was
born on December 6, 1932, in
Shelby County, Iowa. He attended
Harlan Community Schools in
Harlan and was a member of
graduating class of 1951.
Gene joined the United States
Navy on March 15, 1953. He was
baptized at the Great Lakes
Navel Training Center and was a
veteran of the Korean Conflict
where he served aboard the USS
Lansing. After receiving his
honorable discharge on February
4, 1955, Gene returned to
Harlan.
On March 12, 1955, Gene was
united in marriage to Caryl
Janice Heilesen in Harlan, Iowa.
Four children were born to this
union: Jennifer, Janice, James,
and Julie. After their marriage,
the family made their home in
Harlan, Iowa. He worked for area
grocery stores, and Harlan
Clothing, before becoming
employed at Variety
Distributors, Inc. in Harlan in
1960. Gene became General
Manager in 1962 until his
retirement in 1985.
His hobbies included collecting
and restoring Corvettes,
building and flying remote
controlled airplanes, as well as
an electric train for his
grandson. He liked to fish,
travel, and take his family on
snow skiing trips every year. He
was a member of the First United
Methodist Church in Harlan,
Iowa.
Gene died on Sunday, September
18, 2005, at Creighton
University Medical Center in
Omaha, Nebraska, having attained
the age of seventy-two years,
three months, and sixteen days.

was preceded in death by his
daughter, Julie. Survivors
include his wife Caryl of
Harlan, Iowa; his children:

Benjamin of Hoffman Estates,

Thursday, September 22, 2005, at
Pauley Jones Funeral Home in
Harlan, Iowa, at 11:00 A.M. with
Rev. Dave Swinton officiating.
Military Rites were conducted in
the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan,
Iowa, by the American Legion
Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 and
the Shelby County VFW Post No.
941 with Lee Nelson, Andy
Rasmussen, Bob Hansen, Brad
Lawyer, John Assman, and George
Kintner serving as honorary
casket bearers. Serving as
casket bearers were Bob Powers,
Bob Ahrenholtz, Carl Nielsen,
Bert Hillers, Martin Zaccone,
and Peter Dyer.
Bernadine White - Age 95
Bernadine Kathryn White was born the oldest of three children in
her parents’ home in Harlan, IA on January 16, 1911, to Anna
(Christiansen) and Morris Frederickson, both pioneer Danish
Shelby County residents. Her father’s parents, Lars and Anna
Frederickson, arrived in America in 1878 and bought land in
Shelby County in 1892.
She died at Elm Crest Retirement Center, Harlan, on March 9,
2006, having attained the age of 95.
She was a member of the first-ever first-grade class at Laurel
Elementary School, now the site of the Laurel Street Housing
Development. Upon graduation from Harlan High School in 1928,
she attended Iowa State University for one year before returning
to Harlan and teaching country school.
She married Cyrus Melvin White on Dec. 10, 1931 at Bethel
Baptist Church in Harlan and they made their home southwest of
Harlan, where they farmed with Mel’s father Charles. After three
years, they moved to Harlan. To this union, two children were
born, but both son (1936) and daughter (1943) died at birth.
During WWII, she worked at the Harlan Tribune while her husband
Mel served as the personal driver for nationally known war
correspondents on the European war front. He later was able to
bring that Jeep home, the only one to have seen combat duty to
make it back to the States, all through efforts of Gen. Dwight
D. Eisenhower.
In 1946 Bernadine and Mel purchased the Sinclair Service Station
at 5th and Market, adding Oldsmobile and Cadillac autos to the
new White Motors full service dealership. She was actively
involved as the bookkeeper until they sold the business in 1967
to Art Doran. Mel died Feb. 8, 1976. Bernadine purchased Mode
O’Day clothing in 1970, and operated it on the square in
downtown Harlan until retiring in 1979. During her tenure, she
won numerous sales and achievement awards from the company.
After the death of her mother in 1949, they moved to the family
home at 1605 6th ST and helped care for her father until he
remarried. Bernadine and Mel bought the home in 1955, and she
lived there until October 2001, when she moved to the assisted
living apartments at Elm Crest. In October 2002, she moved to
Elm Crest’s nursing care area.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Harlan; Harlan Chamber
of Commerce, where she served as an officer in 1977-78; Shelby
County Historical Society; and a charter member of Myrtue
Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. As committee chairman, she was
instrumental in founding the gift shop at the hospital in 1981,
and served many years on that committee. Her husband, parents,
children, stepmother, brother Gaillard, sister Irene and
brother-in-law Leo Mores preceded her in death.
She is survived
by nephews: Steve (Michelle) Mores, Harlan; Dr. Robert (Lyn)
Frederickson, Birmingham, AL; Alan (Donna) Mores, Harlan;
Nieces: Barbara (Martin) Johnson, Glen Ellyn, IL; Suzie (Herb)
Laney, Hinsdale, IL; and cousin Doris Anne (Mark) Anderson, W.
Des Moines, IA. Survivors also include: sister-in-law Sally
(Mrs. Gaillard) Frederickson, Birmingham, AL; great-nephews Marc
(Jennifer) Mores, Fairfield, OH; Michael (Cathy) Mores, Ames,
IA; Brad (Sara) Johnson, Oakland, CA; Matt Johnson, Glen Ellyn,
IL; Phil Johnson, Boston, MA; Scott Laney, Hinsdale, IL and
Jackson Mores, Harlan; great-nieces Jordan Laney, Iowa City, IA;
and Chandler Mores, Harlan; great-great nieces Ashley and
Stephanie Mores, Fairfield, OH; many other cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 11, 2006, at the
First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa, at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor
Gundar Lamberts officiating. Interment was in the Harlan
Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, with Scott Laney, Dr. Robert
Frederickson, Jackson Mores, Matt Johnson, Brad Johnson, Phil
Johnson, Doris Anne Anderson and Mark Anderson serving as
honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were Mike
Mores, Ernie Schnack, Marc Mores, Steve Mores, Al Burchett, and
Alan Mores.
Florence L. White - Age 87
Florence L. White, the
daughter of Paaren and Anna Jane Mitten Fiscus, was born on
August 31, 1916 in Red Line, Iowa. She attended country school
at Polk Township No. 9. After school she then stayed home to
help her mother and father on the farm.
On April 8, 1938, Florence was united in marriage to James W.
White at the Christian Church in Omaha, Nebraska. To this union,
a daughter, Connie Jane was born. Following their wedding, the
couple farmed near Jacksonville. Florence became James’ right
hand after he lost his hand in a farm accident and because of
her help, it enabled them to continue farming. Florence enjoyed
gardening and flowers, and she was very diligent about taking
care of them. She loved to cook and bake; she could always be
counted on for making homemade noodles. Florence enjoyed waiting
on her family and friends and her door was always open to anyone
who wished to stop in and visit. She took great pride in being a
homemaker and housewife.
Florence died on Monday, May 17, 2004 at the University of
Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska having attained the
age of eighty-seven years, eight months and seventeen days.
In addition to her
parents, Florence was preceded in death by her husband, James,
who died on September 22, 2000, brothers and sisters: Elvie
Kolb, Elmer, Iliff, Melvin, and Melvenee. She is survived by her
daughter, Connie of Omaha, Nebraska, her sister, LaVerne Nielsen
of Harlan, Iowa; brothers, Ivan Fiscus of Kirkman, Iowa; Wayne
Fiscus and his wife, Violet of Kirkman, Iowa; Leonard and his
wife, Madge of Harlan, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives
and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at 1:00 PM
at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa with Roy North
as clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Lyle Fiscus, Keith
Fiscus, John Christensen, John White, Terry Fiscus and Randy
Fiscus. Interment was held in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan,
Iowa.
Keralyn Whyte - Age 70
Keralyn
Jeanne Whyte, the daughter of Arvil and Ethel Tyler Phillips, was born on
December 30, 1934, at Henderson, Iowa. She attended Griswold Schools and was
a member of the graduating class of 1952 from Griswold High School in
Griswold, Iowa. Upon graduation, Keralyn attended Simpson College in
Indianola, Iowa and later, Dana College in Blair, Nebraska. She obtained her
teaching degree.
On July
11, 1964, Keralyn was united in marriage to Dennis Whyte at Queen of
Apostles Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union,
Douglas and Daniel. Dennis died on September 25, 2002. Keralyn was an
elementary school teacher who taught at various Southwest Iowa Schools for
thirty-six years. Twenty-seven of those years were in the Avoca School
System where she retired in 1996.
Keralyn
loved reading, swimming, playing dominoes, Yoga, following Iowa Hawkeye
Athletics, tending to her flowers, and going on summer trips with friends.
She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, the
Library Board and has been a member of Peace United Church since 1976 as
well as their organist and a member of the choir.
Keralyn
died on Thursday, May 5, 2005, at her home in Walnut, Iowa, having attained
the age of seventy years, four months, and six days. She was preceded in
death by her parents and her husband, Dennis. Survivors include her sons,
Douglas Whyte of Walnut, Iowa; Daniel Whyte and his wife, Deanna of Avoca,
Iowa; six grandchildren: Andrew, Allyson, and Emily Whyte of Visalia,
California; Matthew, Lee and Makenzie Whyte of Avoca, Iowa; her brother,
Kendall Phillips and his wife, Kathy of Carmichael, California; other
relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were
held on Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at 11;00 AM at the Peace United Church of
Christ in Walnut, Iowa with Rev. Howard Campbell as the clergy. Serving as
honorary casket bearers were Andrew Whyte, Matthew Whyte, Allyson Whyte, Lee
Whyte, Emily Whyte and Makenzie Whyte. Serving as casket bearers were Tom
Whyte, Floyd Williams, Kenny Kimball, Courtney Griffith, Jeff Krueger and
Tom Williams. Interments was in the Layton Township Cemetery, Walnut, Iowa.
