Helen H. Sharp - Age 102

     Helen Hulda Sharp, the daughter of Henry and Mamie Eggerstedt Jacobsen, was born on January 9, 1906 on a farm south of Walnut, Iowa. When she was in fifth grade of country school, the family moved to town. She attended school in town and graduated with the class of 1923. After her graduation Helen taught country school for four years.

     Helen was united in marriage to Donald Sharp in June 1927. To this union three children were born: Dorothy, Donald and Roger. Donald was employed as a plumber so the family moved around quite a bit. She and Donald enjoyed dancing and movies when they were younger. For 20 years, Helen worked at Peace Haven so it was only natural that when she could no longer live on her own, she decided to make Peace Haven her home. She enjoyed her days at Peace Haven, having many friends there. She looked forward to the daily activities, the monthly tea parties and playing bridge. Helen took and passed her drivers test at the age of 100.

     Helen died on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Atlantic, Iowa having attained the age of one hundred two years, three months and thirteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: Clarence and Harold.

     Survivors include her children: Dorothy Stanosek of Wild Rose, Wisconsin; her sons: Donald Sharp of Sun City, Arizona and Roger Sharp of Burbank, California; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Friday, April 25, 2008 at 1:30 PM at the Peace United Church of Christ with Pastor Gail Muckey as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Rex Sievers, Robert Holst, Max Bornholdt, Dennis Brix, Jim Tooley and Jack Osborn. Interment was held at the Layton Township Cemetery, Walnut, Iowa.

Lorene A. Sieck - Age 87

     Lorene Agnes Sieck was born on December 11, 1921 at Malvern, Iowa. She was the daughter of Burl and Lydia (Smith) Abel and was one of six children in the family. She attended school in Malvern. After school, Lorene worked as a housekeeper.

     Lorene married Willie Sieck on January 21, 1942 in Ava, Missouri. They were the parents of four children: Robert, Roger, Julia and Stuart. After their marriage they made their home on various farms near Wiota, Brayton, Harlan and Marne. They moved to Walnut in 1986. Lorene worked as a homemaker while raising her children. She also worked for many businesses in Atlantic, Elk Horn and Walnut. Willie died on October 21, 1993. Lorene lived in her home until July of 2007 when she moved to Peace Haven Retirement Home in Walnut.

     Lorene loved being with family and friends, was a great cook, and did a lot of gardening and canning. She liked playing cards, was a member of the birthday club and enjoyed being a part of the social life in her community. She was a very caring person, always concerned with others. Lorene loved to go to dances and was always ready to travel to see her children and grandchildren.

     Lorene died on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at Peace Haven Retirement Home in Walnut, Iowa. She had attained the age of eighty-seven years, three months and twenty-seven days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Willie, two brothers: Paul and Donald Abel and one sister, Maxine Baldwin.

     Lorene is survived by her children: Robert L. Sieck and Roger W. Sieck, both of Walnut, Iowa, Julia Forgey of Bolivar, Missouri and Stuart O. Sieck and Michele Lane of Atlantic, Iowa; ten grandchildren: Pamela and her husband Jeff Nielsen, Jill and her husband John Woltmann, Carrie and her husband Jared Schmitt, Micheal Sieck and his wife Brenda, Charles Sieck and his wife Elizabeth Sieck, Kimberly and her husband Fernando Montoya, Esther and her husband Ken Myers, Brad Lawrence, Sarah and her husband Greg Hetrick, and Stephanie Sieck and her fiancé Jake Sullivan; twenty-one great grand-children; her sister, Lucille Christensen of Atlantic, Iowa; her brother, Howard Abel of Wheatland, Missouri; sister-in-law, Inez Abel of Walnut, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

     A funeral service was held on Saturday, April 11, 2009 with Ted Sieck officiating the 10:00 AM service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Jared Schmitt, Fernando Montoya, Greg Hetrick, Jeff Nielsen, John Woltmann, and Jerry Sieck. Interment was held in the Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa.


Della L. Sievers - Age 90

     Della Lorrine Sievers was born on January 3, 1920, to John and Anna (Thomsen) Henningsen near Avoca, Iowa. She was the youngest of three children.

     She attended Avoca Public School and graduated with the Class of 1936. She started working at M. L. Ruback’s Fruit and Grocery Store right after graduation and worked there until 1942, when she was united in marriage to Clifford Sievers of Walnut on February 15, 1942. They became the parents of two daughters: Barbara and Linda.

     They farmed in the Walnut area for many years. Della worked hard raising 1,000 chickens every year, cleaning eggs to sell and butchering hens. She also helped with the daily chores, sold Avon, worked at Sears, and was a cashier at Aunt B’s restaurant in Walnut. She was a devoted wife and mother. Della and Cliff were also life-long members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca.

     In 1971, they moved to Walnut, Iowa. Cliff worked at the Department of Transportation until his retirement and Della worked at Craig’s Food Mart for twelve years. Cliff passed away in December of 1998. Della moved to Peace Haven in Walnut in 2000.

     Della died on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety years, four months, and twenty days. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Anna, her husband Clifford, brother Herbert, sister Clara, and son-in-law Dale.

     She is survived by her daughters: Barbara Lynch of Walnut, Iowa and Linda and her husband Richard Weaver of Atlantic, Iowa; five grandchildren: Brad Lynch of Platte City, Missouri, Jodi and her husband Mark Archuleta of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Sean Brix of Perry, Iowa, Shane Brix and his wife Karen of Grimes, Iowa, and Derek Brix and his wife Lisa of Ames, Iowa; Rich’s two daughters: Stephanie Millikan and Amy Glasser and families; two great-granddaughters: Carli and Sidney Archuleta of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; in-laws Thelma Henningsen of Avoca, Pete Sievers of Walnut, Joy Sievers of Walnut, and Arlene Sievers of Avoca; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.

     Pastor Dennis Reich officiated the 2:00 PM funeral service on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Karen Brix, Jodi Archuleta, and Lisa Brix. Serving as casket bearers were Brad Lynch, Richard Weaver, Derek Brix, Sean Brix, Mark Archuleta, and Shane Brix. Interment was held at Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa.

Gary W. Sievers, Jr. - Age 27

     Gary Wayne Sievers, Jr., was born on February 6, 1979 in Omaha, Nebraska to Gary and Dorothy (Butcher) Sievers, Sr. He graduated from Walnut High School with the class of 1997. He was known to many as "Bud" and a good friend. He was an excellent student and participated in numerous sports while in school.

     Gary's love of sports did not end with high school. He loved to watch the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Kansas City Chiefs. He enjoyed watching wrestling with his mom and dad. Most of all, one of the biggest highlights of his life was to sit on the banks of Lake Rathbun, fishing and watching the eagles. Gary was a very patriotic person and loved his country.

     Gary was employed at Rem Leadway in Shelby, Iowa and later at New Focus in Centerville, Iowa. He was known as a very hard worker by not only his friends but also his family. The people that Gary worked with grew to have personal relationships with him and they kept their friendship going strong throughout his illness.

     Gary died on February 5, 2007 at the Golden Age Care Center in Centerville, Iowa, following a long courageous battle with cancer. He had attained the age of twenty seven years, eleven months and thirty days. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Dewayne and Lucy Butcher and his paternal grandparents, Ralph and Clara Sievers, by an uncle, Max Sievers, and by an aunt, Donna Jean Sievers.

     He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Sievers of Mystic, Iowa; his father, Gary Sievers, Sr., of Walnut, Iowa; his brother, Don Butcher and his wife, Angela, of Centerville. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews: Kayla and Matthew of Harlan, Iowa, Christian, Patience, Riley and Wyatt of Centerville; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and by his close friend, Brandon Aldridge of Mystic. He will be loved and missed by all for he has touched so many lives.

     Funeral Services were held on Friday, February 9, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with Wayne Paulsen as the officiant. Serving as casket bearers were Mike Akers, Scott Henderson, Ron Ruhs, Don Butcher, Gene Butcher, Jr., Craig Frazier, Jerry Tharen and Jeremy Sievers. Interment was held in the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.

Kathryn L. Sievers - Age 88

     Kathryn Sievers was born on July 3, 1921, on a farm near Walnut, Iowa, to George and Susan (Smith) Gross. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walnut. Kathryn attended the Walnut Community Schools and graduated with the Class of 1939.

     On November 20, 1942, she was united in marriage to Lester Sievers in Avoca, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Larry, Stan, and Mary. Kathryn was a housewife and helped her husband on the farm. She loved the farm life and the close family ties which evolve from working every day with one’s family. Lester and Kathryn farmed together until his death in 1986.

     She was a teacher, 4-H leader, and an avid gardener and quilter. She was also very involved in church activities and community affairs.

     She lived in the Walnut area until she was eighty years old. In 2000, she moved to Bossier City, Louisiana, to be closer to her children. It was there that she died on Wednesday, November 25, 2009, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, four months, and twenty-two days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lester Sievers, brother Charles, and sister Betty.

     She will be dearly missed by her children: Larry Sievers of Woodburn, Oregon, Stan Sievers and his wife Shirley of Bossier City, Louisiana, and Mary Mangham of Bossier City; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Phyllis Gross of Walnut, Iowa; other family members and friends.

     Rev. John Frost celebrated the 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walnut, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Jim Sievers, Walt Knudtson, George Gross, Bob Gross, Chuck Gross, and Rex Sievers. Interment was held at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Walnut.

Marilyn "Lynn" Sievers - Age 79

     Marilyn "Lynn" Sievers, daughter of Fred John and Mae Victorine (Hansen) Hazelton, was born on April 10, 1927, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She attended various schools in Council Bluffs, and when her family moved to David City, Nebraska, where she completed her high school education. After high school, she received her teachers training and became a music teacher in Walnut, Iowa, for a short period of time.

     On June 27, 1948, Marilyn was united in marriage to Lee Sievers in David City, Nebraska. To this union four daughters were born: Cynthia, Carol, Janet and Nancy. After their marriage they made their home on a farm near Walnut. Marilyn was baptized and confirmed. She was a very active member of the Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut. Her love of music led her to serve as the choir director for many years.

     Marilyn was a loving wife and proud mother who worked hard as a homemaker while raising her daughters on the farm. She enjoyed needlepoint, bird watching and was the self proclaimed "Bird Lady" of Walnut. Marilyn was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and the Order of the Eastern Star.

     After the death of her husband in 1993, Marilyn remained at home in Walnut before making her home at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Anita, Iowa. This is where she died on Thursday, March 8, 2007, having attained the age of seventy-nine years, ten months and twenty-six days. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

     Marilyn is survived by her daughters: Cynthia and her husband Haeven Pedersen of Des Moines, Iowa; Carol Ann and her husband Douglas Dimig of Atlantic, Iowa; Janet Lea and her husband Scott Haddock of Easton, Maryland and Nancy Lynn Sievers of Brielle, New Jersey; eight grandchildren: Tamara Pedersen, Christopher Pedersen, Julie and her husband Robby Anderson, Scott Dimig and his wife Kimberly, Amy and her husband Jeremy Lindley, Neal Dimig and his wife Nicole and Corben Haddock and Devan Haddock still living at home; 12 great grandchildren; three nieces, other loving relatives and many friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at 1:00 PM at the Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa with Rev. Gail Muckey as the clergy. An Order of Eastern Star service was also done by the Liberty Chapter No 230 of Marne, Iowa. Serving as Honorary casket bearers were Al Koll, Robert Dierking, Bob Allen, Bob Lafrentz and Dale Ploen. Serving as casket bearers were Doug Alff, Allan Sievers, Craig Woltmann, Max Petersen, Chuck Gross and Rex Sievers. Interment was held in the Layton Township Cemetery, Walnut, Iowa.

Marvin L. Sievers - Age 92

     Marvin Leroy Sievers, the son of Rudolph and Hulda Voss Sievers, was born on June 15, 1914 in Walnut, Iowa. He attended school in Walnut and graduated from Walnut High School. After school Marvin farmed for a few years and worked at the Avoca Alfalfa Mill.

       Marvin was united in marriage to Wilma Totten on October 8, 1940. To this union three children were born: Dennis, Lana and Steven. Marvin became an accomplished interior painter until his retirement and even after his retirement he continued to pursue his painting skills by creating beautiful landscape pictures on canvas. Wilma died in 1971 and on October 5, 1980 Marvin was united in marriage Wilma Gumbert. Marvin was also an avid dancer; when he wasn't painting he was waltzing.

      Marvin continued to live in Walnut until becoming a resident of the Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Avoca, Iowa in 2005 and this is where he died on June 8, 2007 having attained the age of ninety-two years, eleven months and twenty-four days. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Wilma Totten and his second wife Wilma Gumbert who died in 2000 and two brothers: Orville and Arnold Sievers.

      Survivors include his children: Lana and her husband Robert Stevens of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Dennis Sievers and his wife Amy of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Steven Sievers and his wife Cindy of Walnut, Iowa; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers: Vernon Sievers and his wife Irene of San Marcos, Texas and Francis Sievers and his wife Betty of Apache Junction, Arizona; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

      Funeral Services were held on Monday, June 11, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Peace Untied Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa with Rev. Gail Muckey as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Marty Sievers, Dennis Sievers, Robert Stevens, Brian Shea, Steve Sievers and Louis Pedersen. Interment was held at the Layton Township Cemetery, Walnut, Iowa.

Phyllis E. Sievers - Age 81

    Phyllis Elaine Sievers was born on November 11, 1925, in rural Shelby County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Alfred and Bernice (Poulsen) Hansen. She was baptized at the English Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Phyllis attended country school at Layton Township and graduated from Walnut High School in 1943. After school she worked at Nick George's Red and White Store where she met Richard Sievers who was working as the bookkeeper for the Walnut Fruit and Grocery Store, where she then later worked.

     Phyllis was united in marriage to Richard on December 25, 1945, at the English Lutheran Church in Avoca. They were the parents of two daughters: Diane and Patricia. The family lived on her parents farm west of Walnut until 1954 when they moved to a farm south of Avoca. In 1961, they moved to their present home southeast of Walnut. While Phyllis worked on the farm, she gardened, raised and sold African Violets and took care of her daughters. She later sold Avon products door to door. Phyllis loved spending time with her family and cats and enjoyed the outdoors - especially witnessing sunsets outside her own porch.

     Phyllis was a lifetime member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, where she was very active in Ladies Aid and Family Fellowship. She was a member of the Knox Project Club in Avoca for over forty years.

     Phyllis died on Thursday, August 16, 2007, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. She had attained the age of eighty one years, nine months and five days. She was preceded in death by her parents.

     Phyllis is survived by her husband, Richard, of rural Walnut, Iowa; her two daughters: Diane Sievers of South Deerfield, Massachusetts and Patricia Lehnhardt and her husband, James, of Galena, Illinois; a grandson, Aaron Lehnhardt and his wife, Priscilla, and their daughter, Nyaa of Mission Viejo, California; other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 1:30 P.M. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa with burial at Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa. Pastor Dennis Reich officiated with Wayne Paulsen delivering the Eulogy. Honorary casket bearers were Howard and Ardis Bangston. Active casket bearers included: Jack Ploen, Jeff Bornholdt, Allan Sievers, John L. Harding, Harry R. Hansen and Lowell Andersen.

Richard T. Sievers - Age 89

     Richard Thomsen Sievers was born on July 13, 1919 in rural Walnut, Iowa. He was the son of Clarence and Amanda (Thomsen) Sievers and was the oldest of four children in the family. Richard was baptized at Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut. He attended school at Layton Township #8 and then Walnut High School, graduating in 1936. He attended the University of Iowa and received a bachelor of science in commerce degree, and was elected a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma academic fraternity. After college he came back to Walnut and worked as the bookkeeper at Bakers Walnut Fruit and Grocery store.

     On December 25, 1945, Richard was united in married to Phyllis Hansen at the English Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa, which later merged into Trinity Lutheran Church. They were the parents of two daughters: Diane and Patricia. The family lived on her parents farm west of Walnut until 1954 when they moved to a farm south of Avoca. In 1961, they moved to their home southeast of Walnut. He retired in 1994.

     Richard enjoyed photography, baking bread and building and flying remote control airplanes, genealogy and working on the computer. Phyllis died on August 16, 2007 and Richard remained in his home until December of 2007 when he moved to the Avoca Lodge Assisted Living in Avoca.

     Richard died on Monday, July 14, 2008 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. He had attained the age of eighty nine years and one day. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis, his sister, Elaine "Sally" Erickson and his two brothers: Roy and Lee.

     Richard is survived by his daughters: Diane Sievers of South Deerfield, Massachusetts and Patricia Lehnhardt and her husband, James, of Galena, Illinois; a grandson, Aaron Lehnhardt and his wife, Priscilla, and their daughter, Nyaa of Mission Viejo, California; other relatives and many friends.

     The family greeted friends on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at the Pauley Jones Funeral Chapel in Walnut. Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, with Pastor Dennis Reich officiating. Burial was at Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut. Those serving as casket bearers for the service were Jack Ploen, Aaron Lehnhardt, Rex Sievers, Allan Sievers, Jeff Bornholdt and Wayne Sievers. Pauley Jones Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Robert "Pete" Sievers - Age 95
    
Robert "Pete" Sievers, the son of Walter and Traci (Feldman) Sievers, was born on September 9, 1915, at home. Pete was the 7th of 10 children born to this union. He attended country school, graduating in 1929, then attended Walnut High School, and was in the graduating class of 1933. Upon graduating from high school, he worked at the family farm and spent a few summers thrashing in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota. Pete then moved to California and worked at Forest Lawn Cemetery until Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941, when he returned home to run the family farm while his brothers were away at war.
     On August 28, 1946, Pete was united in marriage to LeEtta "Letty" Arentsen in Seneca, Kansas. Two children were born to this union, Wayne and Allan. After their marriage, the couple resided for a short time with Letty’s mother, then moved to a farm south of Walnut. In 1948, Pete and Letty moved to the farm where they remained throughout their lives. Pete spent his days working on the farm, raising hogs, cattle and row crops. Pete and Letty loved to square dance and travel, and they especially enjoyed their annual fishing trips to Minnesota or Canada.
     Pete did a lot of hunting and fishing in his spare time. When he retired from farming, he enjoyed doing woodworking, and made many beautiful pieces of furniture. He also loved spending time with his family and friends, especially during the holidays and birthdays.
     Until the age of 89, Pete ran the combine to help his son, Wayne, and grandson Cole, with harvest every fall. He spent a great deal of time with his grandchildren, taking them out to eat, reading to them, and teaching them how to play pool. Pete was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever he was able.
     Pete died on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of 95 years, 8 months, and 8 days. He was preceded in death by his wife, Letty, his parents, brothers: Harold, Ralph, Raymond, Leonard, Clifford, Lester, and Dale; and sisters Cora and Alberta.
     He is survived by his children Wayne Sievers and Allan Sievers, both of Walnut; seven grandchildren: Cole, Sarah, and Connor Sievers, Valerie, Lauren, Tori, and Trista Sievers; and sisters-in-law Arlene Sievers of Avoca, Iowa Joy Sievers of Walnut; other relatives and many friends.
     Pastor David Krueger officiated the 2:00 PM Funeral Service at the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut, Iowa on Saturday, May 21, 2011. Honorary casket bearers were Freddie Matthies, Arnold "Les" Brehmer, Valerie Sievers, Trista Sievers, Tori Sievers and Lauren Sievers. Burial was held in Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut with Roger Sievers, Gary Arentsen, Connor Sievers, Don Sievers, Cole Sievers and Sarah Sievers serving as casket bearers.

Vernon R. Sievers - Age 92

     Vernon Rudolph Sievers, the son of Rudolph and Hulda Voss Sievers, was born on August 19, 1915 near Walnut, Iowa. He attended country school.

     Vernon was united in marriage to Irene Pedersen on March 25, 1936 and to this union one son, Richard, was born. Vernon worked and farmed in that area until becoming a carpenter in 1958. He started building homes in Atlantic, Iowa until moving to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1960. Later he lived in Bellevue, Papillion and Omaha, Nebraska while building homes in the Bellevue and Papillion areas. After retiring in 1984, they moved to New Braunfels, Texas to be closer to their son.

     Vernon died on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at the Trisun Care Center Windcrest in San Antonio, Texas having attained the age of ninety-two years, five months and twenty-four days. He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Orville, Arnold and Marvin and a great granddaughter, Misty.

     Survivors include his wife of almost seventy-two years, Irene; his son: Richard Sievers and his wife Shirley of New Braunfels, Texas; four grandchildren: Richard and his wife Debi of Littleton, Colorado; Scott and his wife Jennifer of Centennial, Colorado; Mark and his wife Caroline of Missouri City, Texas and Marla and her husband Dana Somoskey of San Marcos, Texas; one brother Francis Sievers and his wife Betty of Mesa, Arizona; also five great grandchildren: Jake, Brittney, Sarah, Lucas and Marshall; numerous nieces, nephews, and other members of their families.

     Visitation and funeral services were held on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home, Avoca Chapel, Avoca, Iowa. Mr. Wayne Paulsen was officiant for the service. Those serving as casket bearers were Jim Pedersen, Steve Pedersen, Ken Schnitker, Dennis Sievers, Steven Sievers, Robert Campbell and Larry Lapel. Burial was in Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa.

William “Bill” Sievers - 97

     William Frederick Sievers, son of William and Anna (Lamp) Sievers, was born on September 26, 1911 in Minden, Iowa. He was one of five children. In 1912, he and his mother rode in a railcar to Briggsdale, Colorado where his grandfather had homesteaded. As William grew older, he loved to farm and hunt. He taught himself to play the piano and accordion and would often play for dances. In 1934, he went to work for Hormel in Austin, Minnesota. William then joined the National Guard and due to a deaf ear, he remained in the states during the war and became a mess sergeant where he was in charge of feeding 440 men.

     In 1941, William married June Dock. Three daughters were born to this union. They resided in Austin, Minnesota until 194__ when they moved to Minneapolis where William drove a gasoline transport. In 1950, they moved to LaCross, Wisconsin and in 1951 back to Minneapolis. In 1952, Bill moved his family to Briggsdale to join his brother and father on the home place where they shared the farming operation. In 1954, the family moved to a farm south of Walnut, Iowa. June passed away in 1966. In 1971, Bill married Loree Oman. Bill retired from farming and moved to Cozad, Nebraska where he built his own home on a lake so he could enjoy one of his favorite past times of fishing. Loree passed away in 2001. Bill moved back to Walnut in 2002.

     Bill had many hobbies and interests in his lifetime. He loved to farm and plant gardens, playing the piano, organ, and accordion, dancing drawing cartoons, photography, reading, cooking and baking, mechanics and just plain fixing everything. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always a delight to his family and friends.

     In addition to his parents and wives, William was preceded in death by his brothers Raymond and Carl. Bill is survived by his children: Monica Joyce of Sidney, Nebraska, Susie Sievers and friend Mark Petersen of Avoca, Iowa, Margo and her husband Doug Matthies of Walnut, Iowa; step-children Bob and Mary Oman of Holdredge, Nebraska, Dick and Sharon Oman of Omaha, Nebraska, Sheryl and Brian Jones of Broomfield, Colorado and Dave and Maureen Oman of Grand Island, Nebraska; eight grandchildren; fourteen step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and many friends.

     Pastor David Krueger conducted the 10:30 AM funeral service on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Marty Sievers, Matthew Joyce, Reid Matthies, Billy Sievers, Brian Shea, and Michael Shutters. Interment was held at Graceland Cemetery in Avoca.

Samuel F. Simpson - Age 82

     Samuel F. Simpson was born on the family farm near Galt, Missouri, the son of Samuel R. and Pearl (King) Simpson.  He grew up in the area and graduated from Galt High School in 1943.

     On October 21, 1943, Sam enlisted in the United States Navy.  He was on two LST boats, the Farragut and the Idaho, while in the Philippines.  He was honorably discharged on June 21, 1946.

     On October 1, 1949, he was united in marriage to Inez Wendt in Avoca, Iowa.  They lived in Northeast Iowa for twenty-two years.  Sam worked on the Rock Island Railroad as a signal maintainer until 1982.

     Sam retired while they were living in Estherville, Iowa, and in 1984, moved to Walnut, Iowa.  Shortly after that, they bought a house in Avoca where they lived until Inez's death in 1994.  In 1999, Sam moved to Oelwein to be closer to Rich and his family.  Sam enjoyed his family and devoted his time to them.

     Sam was a member of VFW Post No. 1725, American Legion Post No. 0729, NARVRE Post No. 106, and the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen.

     Sam died on Saturday, December 1, 2007, having attained the age of eighty-two years, one month, and three days.  He was preceded in death by his wife Inez, his parents, brother Doran Simpson, and sister Alice Mills.

     He is survived by his son Richard Simpson and his wife Lisa of Oelwein, Iowa; two grandchildren, his sister-in-law Mary Simpson of Salem, Oregon; and a special friend Deliva Hardman of Oelwein, Iowa.

Michelle A. Slater - Age 51

     Michelle Ann Slater was born on April 10, 1957 to Gerald and Velma (Bushkamp) Bruck in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa, and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School before graduating from Dunlap Community Schools. She attended Iowa Western Community College and received her Associate’s Degree as an Administrative Secretary. She was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa sorority while in college.

     Michelle was united in marriage on November 13, 1976 to Curt Slater at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Four daughters were born to this union: Christina, Amber, Megan, and Anne.

     She was in charge of property management and logistics for Alegent Health Systems in Omaha, Nebraska and worked there for ten years. She loved music and played the piano and guitar. Her favorite times were camping with her family at Yellow Smoke in Denison and being on the pit crews for the racing circuits in Harlan, Audubon, and Denison.

     Michelle died on Friday, December 26, 2008, having attained the age of fifty-one years, eight months, and sixteen days. She was preceded in death by her sister Karen Hill.

     She is survived by her husband Curt Slater of Defiance, Iowa; her daughters: Christina and her husband Mike Roush of Harlan, Iowa, Amber Slater of Defiance, Megan Slater of Denison, Iowa, and Anne Slater of Defiance; eight grandchildren; her parents Gerald and Velma Bruck of Earling, Iowa; her brothers and sisters: Jody Bruck of Harlan, Jerry Bruck and his wife Aline of Harlan, Colleen Spinler of Clarinda, Iowa, Vernon Bruck and his wife Pat of Denison, and Robin Bruck of Denison; nieces and nephews, other family members and many friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, December 30, 2008, with Rev. Tom Coenen celebrating the 10:30 AM service at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. Serving as casket bearers were Terry Goetz, Gary Mulbauer, Randal Coenen, Bud Bieker, John Fromm, and Denny Doerr with Lou Hall serving as honorary casket bearer. Interment was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Defiance, Iowa.

Rondo E. Smathers - Age 87

     Rondo E. Smathers was born in the town of Walnut, Iowa on December 23, 1920. He enjoyed his life in that small rural community in the company of his brother, Dale and sister, Lois, his father and mother, Winfield and Mabel Smathers, his grandparents, the Nissens and many aunt, uncles and cousins.

     Ron was very active in the local 4-H club, where, in his own words, "I was taught to win without bragging and lose without crabbing". He later served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After receiving an Honorable discharge, he attended the University of Nebraska where he majored in business. In 1948 he began what would become an interesting 33 year career with Peter Kiewit & Sons during which time he and his young family traveled extensively. He was an active member of the Toastmasters Club and served as president of his local chapter at one time. His first job was as the field office manager for the building of the Mutual of Omaha home office, followed by the Omaha Veterans Hospital.

     After working on the New Jersey Turnpike and Newark Airport, he worked out of the New York office during the building of Thule Air Force Base in Greenland. He then became controller on the Portsmouth, Ohio project for the Atomic Energy Commission for five years and then back to the East Coast as Business Manager for the Eastern District's continuing work on the Thule base and early warning system contracts. He was office manager on the Minuteman Missile project at Minot, North Dakota in the early 1960's and then lived in San Francisco, California where he was the office manager on the trans-Bay tube project for the Bay Area Rapid Transit. Ron crossed the country again to work on the 63rd Street Tube project beneath the East River in New York and then completed the full circle when he was transferred back to the home office in Omaha as administrative manager, overseeing such functions as office services, personnel, travel and the Plaza Building Company. He retired to Lake Tahoe, Nevada, living part of the time in Arizona and lastly, back to Minot.

     Ron died on March 1, 2008 of complications from a long journey with Alzheimer's disease while residing at Trinity Homes in Minot, North Dakota. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dale, in 1985.

     Rondo is survived by his wife, Eva, of Minot; his daughter, Sharon Smathers of Sausalito, California; his son, Randy Smathers of Argyle, Texas; two grandchildren, Scott and Sherri and two great grandchildren, Nicole and Zack; and his sister, Lois Zirk of Portland, Oregon. Funeral services were held at the graveside in Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa on Wednesday, March 5, 2008. Pauley Jones Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn B. Smith - Age 89

     Evelyn Barbara Smith was born on July 3, 1919 to Nick and Clara (Book) Bissen in Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling.

     On August 28, 1940, Evelyn was united in marriage to Ural Smith at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church by her godfather, Msgr. Peter Bissen. Seven children were born to this union: Phyllis, Marilyn, Norman, Gaylen, Roland, Randy, and Dan.

     After their marriage, they farmed west of Panama until they bought Ural’s childhood home and raised their children on that family farm. Evelyn was a busy wife and mother. She helped her husband with the farm chores and planted a large garden, canning lots of vegetables. She raised chickens and put many in the freezer for her family.

     Evelyn was an excellent seamstress and made most of the clothes for the children when they were smaller. She also loved to embroider and sewed many quilts.

     She served as President of the altar and rosary society, Treasurer of St. Mary’s Sewing Circle and of Panama’s Golden Age Club, and belonged to the Friendship Club, the ladies groups and parish groups. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Katherine #266 of Earling, helped with CCD and was active in 4-H.

     Evelyn became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community in May of 2008 and it was there that she died on Monday, October 6, 2008, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, three months, and three days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ural, her daughter Marilyn Kleffman, and her brothers and sisters: Hilda Bauman, Mary Bruck, Adella Stracke, Nick Bissen, Jr., Cyrilla Pauley, Sylvan Bissen, Joseph Bissen, Theresa Behrendt, Hulda Bissen, Adella Bissen, Irene Bissen, Leona Bissen, and Leo Bissen.

     She is survived by her daughter Phyllis and her husband Ken Monahan of Harlan, Iowa, her sons: Norman Smith and his wife Jean of Dunlap, Iowa, Gaylen Smith and his wife Zita of Portsmouth, Iowa, Roland Smith and his wife Phyllis of Portsmouth,Randy Smith and his wife Bonnie of LaVista, Nebraska, and Dan Smith and his wife Tammy of Bondurant, Iowa; twenty-seven grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; her sisters: Sister Mary Helen Bissen of Glenview, Illinois and Mildred Von Hagel of Rosenberg, Texas; her brother Walter Bissen and his wife Catherine of Earling, Iowa; other family members and many friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, October 11, 2008 with Rev. John Dorton celebrating the 10:30 AM service. Casket bearers were Ron Kleffman, Roland Smith, Norman Smith, Dan Smith, Gaylen Smith, Randy Smith, Ken Monahan, and Phyllis Monahan. Interment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Panama, Iowa.

John "Jack" Smith - Age 55

     John "Jack" Joseph Smith, son of Gene and Marian (Raymond) Smith, was born on December 18, 1952 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was one of twelve children and shared a special bond with his twin brother Patrick. Jack was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa, and attended grade school at St. Mary’s Catholic Schools in Portsmouth. He graduated from Harlan Community High School with the class of 1971.

     After school, Jack began working in construction and was employed with Harlan Builders for several years building poll barns. He eventually started his own company, Town and Country Buildings, and built poll barns throughout Southwest Iowa. When Jack wasn’t busy working, he could be found on the golf course. He was an avid golfer and participated in many tournaments.

     On July 5, 2008, Jack was united in marriage to Pam Lockwood on an acreage outside of Harlan.

     Jack died on Monday, September 22, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center having attained the age of fifty-five years, nine months, and four days. He is preceded in death by his father, and his twin brother Patrick.

     He is survived by his wife Pam of Harlan, Iowa; his children: Angie and her husband Dave Monson of Harlan and Brad Smith and his wife Kim of Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren: Michael, Johnathan, Alex, Ava Rose, and Avril; his mother, Marian Smith of Avoca, Iowa; his siblings: Jennifer and her husband Rick King of Kansas City, Missouri; Denny Smith of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; Nan and her husband Larry Benscoter of Nebraska City, Nebraska; Chris Smith and his wife Gay of Waterloo, Nebraska; Tim Smith of Yakima, Washington; Gail and her husband Hashem Hashemi-Toroghi of Ames, Iowa; Jay Smith of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; Geri and her husband Rich Marshall of Bethel Island, California; Jeannie Smith and Mary Lou and her husband Richard Gift all of Austin, Texas; nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, September 25, 2008, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa with Rev. Robert Hoefler celebrating and Rev. John Frost concelebrating the 11:00 AM service. Serving as honorary casket bearers were: Brad Smith, Gus Eckerman, Tim Smith, Jay Smith, Dave Monson, Chris Smith, Denny Smith, and Ron Novotny. Serving as casket bearers were: Jon Noon, Denny Kasperbauer, Paul Blair, Matt Klemme, Mick Johnston, Walter Rieck, Kyle Rock, and Jerry Lambert. Burial was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth, Iowa.

Richard M. Sondag - Age 82
     Richard Michael Sondag, son of Joseph and Mary (Hammes) Sondag, was born January 14, 1928 on the family farm east of Portsmouth, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth and attended St. Mary’s School graduating with the class of 1945.
     After finishing school, Rich helped his dad on the family farm. Always looking for entertainment, Rich liked to go to the movies in Earling, Iowa. One evening he met this lovely young lady by the name of Leona Heese. It was love at first sight. They dated for a few years, during which Rich also was in the United States Army. Before leaving for Korea, Rich proposed to Leona. On May 20, 1952, just two weeks after Rich returned from Korea, they were united in marriage by his brother, Msgr. Joseph Sondag at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling.
     While in Korea, Rich served on the front line with the 27th regiment, 25th division Wolfhound, receiving the Combat Infantry Badge and a Korean Medal with Bronze Battle Star and the United Nations Medal while achieving the rank of Corporal. Since Rich was still in the Army, the newlyweds had to live in Indiana where he was stationed until receiving his honorable discharge on October 22, 1952. Rich was a member and past Commander of the John Ohlinger American Legion Post No. 547 and Msgr. Joseph Sondag Council No. 12193 Knights of Columbus, both of Portsmouth.
     Rich and Leona returned to Shelby County, Iowa where they farmed and later purchased the Sondag family farm where he was born. Farming with John Deere equipment was a must for Rich. He was proud of his very clean bean and corn fields, hogs, cattle, garden of melons, sweet corn and potatoes. He placed a small white flag in one of his bean fields. When asked what the flag was for he would reply, "just to make you ask questions." He loved to tease and play little practical jokes on his family and friends.
     Free time, especially in the winter, found Rich reading the daily newspaper, farm magazines (especially The Green Machine) and anything about history or politics. As a member of St. Mary’s Church, Rich was always active in most of its functions, picnics, fund-raising events and held various offices in the church and the community.
     Rich died on November 6, 2010 at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, having attained the age of eighty-two years, nine months and twenty-three days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Marie, Francis, Ted, Msgr. Joseph and Suzette. Survivors include his wife, Leona (Heese) Sondag; his children: Ken Sondag and his wife Kathy of Cary, North Carolina; Dave Sondag and his wife Val of West Des Moines, Iowa; Carol and her husband Brian Kelley of Eagle Grove, Iowa; Ed Sondag and his wife Linda of Omaha, Nebraska and Patty and her husband Bob Corey of Omaha; grandchildren: Paul Kelley, Rachel Sondag, Laura Sondag, Patrick Kelley, Amy Corey, Michael Sondag, Ryan Corey, Daniel Sondag, Melissa Sondag and Tyler Sondag; his sister Barbara and her husband Richard Heller of Portsmouth and his sister-in-law Joan Sondag of Harlan; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
     Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. John Dorton at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth, Iowa on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 10:30 AM. Military Rites were conducted by the John Ohlinger American Legion Post No. 547 at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Paul Kelley, Tyler Sondag, Melissa Sondag, and Rachel Sondag. Serving as casket bearers were Amy Corey, Michael Sondag, Ryan Corey, Daniel Sondag, Patrick Kelley and Laura Sondag.

Alyce M. Sorenson - Age 82

     Alyce Mae (Doonan) Sorenson was born on June 21, 1925, to Lettimer and Mary (Jensen) Doonan in Polk Township, Shelby County Iowa. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlan. She attended grade school at Polk No. 9 and Center No. 1 country schools. Alyce Mae and her parents moved to their home in Center township in 1937, where she enjoyed farm life.

     On February 25, 1945, Alyce Mae married Wayne Lund at the First United Methodist Church in Harlan. To this union two children were born: Nola and Darvin both of Harlan. Wayne died May 5, 1965, and Alyce Mae continued to manage the farm and help her son raise hogs and sheep.

     Alyce Mae married Vernon Sorenson on February 14, 1967. Vernon and Alyce Mae enjoyed traveling as well as living and working on the farm. Alyce Mae was always busy cleaning and baking, and whenever anyone would stop in for a cup of coffee or a glass of water was offered along with cookies and bars. She took pride in her home. She was always up around 5:00 a.m. and went to bed early. Over the years, Alyce Mae enjoyed her neighbors visits and the daily contacts by phone. Her favorite hobby was watching birds out her window, especially goldfinches and cardinals.

     She was blessed with three granddaughters and they were the joy of her life. On Saturday nights they would call Grams and ask if they could ride along to Harlan, eat out and do some shopping. Of course, Grams would always say, "you bet." She also had two great granddaughters of which she was very proud. When they visited her at the nursing home, she would always say, "Aren’t they special."

     In addition to her parents and both husbands, Alyce Mae was proceeded in death by her brother, Wilford and her daughter-in-law, Joyce Lund. She is survived by her children: Nola Lund and Darvin Lund both of Harlan, Iowa; her three grand daughters, Tina (Kirk) Dekker of Sheldon, Iowa, Shelli Lund of Eagle Grove, Iowa, and Amy Lund of Washington, Iowa; and two great granddaughters Kourtney and Peyton Dekker of Sheldon, Iowa; and nephew Tom Lund of Harlan, Iowa; nieces Genevieve Wede of Atlantic, Iowa, and Linda Wisdom of Sterling, Colorado; other relatives and many friends.

     A funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, with Pastor Dave Swinton officiating the 10:30 AM service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Richard and Juliene Ferry, Charles and Twyla Grabill, Duane and Marlene Christensen, Richard and Rosalie Andersen, and Art and Adeline Maxwell. Serving as casket bearers were Lenny Heimerman, Paul Petersen, Craig Christensen, Roger Whitson, Galen Grabill, Darrel Mathiasen, Steve Hansen, and Mike Thraen. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.

Dexter Sorensen - Age 85

     Dexter Ellen (Evans) Sorensen was born on January 5, 1923, to Thomas and Alta (Plumb) Evans in Sibley, Iowa. She was baptized in the Methodist Church and attended the Harlan Schools after moving here as a little girl. She graduated with the class of 1940 and went on to further her education at the Commercial Extension School in Omaha, Nebraska.

     On February 4, 1942, Dexter was united in marriage to Willie Sorensen in Spencer, Iowa. Two children were born to this union: Dale and Donna. She became a full-time housewife and mother to her children, enjoying their activities with them and being involved in their lives. During the 1940's, Dexter and Willie owned and operated farms in Audubon and Shelby Counties. In February of 1954, they moved into Harlan where Dexter loved spending time with her family and her friends. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed having her loved ones around her.

     Dexter died on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, having attained the age of eighty-five years, six months, and ten days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Willie, her brothers: Gerald and Edward, and her sister Arlene Nelson.

     She is survived by her son Dale Sorensen and his wife Barbara of Urbandale, Iowa; her daughter Donna and her husband Barry Deuel of Harlan, Iowa; one granddaughter Amye and her husband Brian Love; three great-grandchildren: Bennett, Parker, and Ainsley Love; her sisters: Jane Clemsen of Kearney, Missouri and Grace Ann Knudsen of Harlan, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Friday, July 18, 2008 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa with Pastor Dave Swinton officiating the 10:00 AM service. Casket bearers were John Evans, Dale Sorensen, Jerry Barker, Jim Nelson, Stan Knudsen, and Verner Hansen. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.

Inez T. Sorensen - Age 90

     Inez Theodora Sorensen was born to Lars and Charlotte (Nelson) Ostebee in Shelby County, Iowa on July 30, 1918. Inez attended Danway Country School through the 8th grade. She attended Kirkman High School her freshman and sophomore years and Harlan High School for her junior and senior years where she graduated. She was united in marriage to Chris Sorensen in a Norwegian ceremony at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Irwin on January 1, 1939.

     She was raised in a Christian home where the Bible was read regularly. Chris came to know the Lord while they were in their 30’s and they and the family became members of a small country church in Botna, Iowa, close to their farm. Inez also became a member of the Jefferson Friendly Club, a neighborhood club for women in that area.

     After they retired from the farm they moved to Harlan in 1978. They joined Grace Baptist Church and in later years also attended First Baptist Church with their daughter and her family. Inez was a faithful church worker all of her life. She was a piano player, Sunday School teacher, and held offices in the ladies organizations. Their house was always open to traveling evangelists and preachers who needed a place to stay.

     After retiring from the farm, Inez and Chris spent many winters in Florida and Texas visiting family and friends. After Chris’s stroke in 1997 they weren’t able to travel but still enjoyed company. She treasured visits from relatives, neighbors, and friends. All of her kitchen cupboards are lined with recipes she had cut out of the newspaper, heard on the radio, or received from friends.

     Chris died in May of 2003, and Inez continued to live in their home in Harlan. The day after her 90th birthday party, Inez was hospitalized where it was learned that she had a brain tumor. After her surgery she was in the hospital and nursing home for many days, but her prayer was that she could go to her own home again. That prayer was answered on January 13th when her health and mobility had improved to the point that it was possible. She was able to spend over three months there, until returning to the nursing home on April 22nd.

     Inez died on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, having attained the age of ninety years, nine months, and seventeen days. In addition to her husband Chris, and her father and mother, she was preceded in death by her brothers Magnus and Loren Ostebee, her sister Judith Christensen, and son-in-law James Warren. Survivors include her daughter Luanne and her husband Larry Hutchinson of Branson, Missouri; daughter Helen Warren of Harlan, Iowa; sister Margaret Cook of Phoenix, Arizona; eight grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; other relatives and countless friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Grace Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa. Revs. David Hutchinson and Joe Earle officiated the 10:30 AM service with interment at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan. Serving as casket bearers were: Merlene Ostebee, Daniel Lotenschtein, Norval Nissen, Michael Blansit, Daniel Hutchinson, and Chris Hutchinson.

Robert "Rusty" Sorensen - Age 85

    Robert "Rusty" Sorensen, son of William and Rachel Cushing Sorensen, was born on January 16, 1922, in Corley, Iowa. He attended country school in Corley and after school, worked at the sawmill near Corley. On August 12, 1942, Rusty enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served his country honorably until his discharge at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, on October 24, 1945. After his military service during World War 2, Rusty lived in California and worked at his brother’s filling station. After a short time in California, Rusty returned home to Corley and worked as a hired man on area farms.

     On February 23, 1951, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Schneider in Omaha, Nebraska. Four children were born to this union: William, Michael, Paul, and Jean. They continued to make their home near Corley until the mid 1960's when they moved into Harlan where Rusty tended bar at the VFW. A short time later, Rusty began working at Mickel’s Restaurant where he became the night manager for several years before retiring in 1983.

     In Rusty’s retirement, he and Dorothy remained in Harlan where Rusty was quite proud of his large garden, especially his tomatoes that he sold out of his garage. Dorothy died on February 18, 1993, and after her death, Rusty remained at home in Harlan. In April of 2004, Rusty moved to the Little Flower Haven and this is where he died on Sunday, May 27, 2007 having attained the age of eighty-five years, four months and eleven days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Paul; his daughter Jean and his brothers and sisters: Irma Condor, Viola Briggs, Howard Sorensen, Mary Slate, Paul "Bud" Sorensen and Kenneth "Tubby" Sorensen.

    Rusty is survived by sons: William Sorensen of Westphalia, Iowa and Mike Sorensen and his wife Laura of Dow City, Iowa; grandchildren: Amy and her husband Craig Crilly of Harlan, Iowa and Nick Larson, Jackie Larson, Pat Nelson and Cody Nelson of Dow City, Iowa; great grandchildren: Jazmine, Jonah and Jack Crilly all of Harlan; two brothers-in-law: Francis Schneider of Corley and Howard Schneider of Avoca; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

    Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Rev. Heather Ploen was the officiant of the 2:00 PM ceremony. Honorary casket bearers were Rusty’s three great-grandchildren: Jazmine Crilly, Jonah Crilly, and Jack Crilly. Serving as casket bearers were Dan Schneider, Randy Grote, Dale Plagmann, Rex Buckley, Nick Larson, and Jamie Grote. Military rites were held by the Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 and Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 in the Harlan Cemetery.

Ruth Sorensen - Age 87

     Ruth Ellen Sorensen, daughter of Walter F. And Selma (Wilson) Rhodes, was born on January 13, 1922, in Alice, North Dakota. Her family later moved to Harlan, Iowa, where Ruth was a member of the First United Methodist Church. It was there that she met her future husband, JW, at the church youth group. Ruth attended Harlan High School and graduated with the class of 1940.

     Ruth was united in marriage to Jack "JW" Wendell Sorensen on August 18, 1940, at the First United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Rosalie, Patricia, Jack, and Robert. After their wedding, Ruth and JW made their home in Harlan where Ruth was a stay-at-home mom. She took a lot of pride in her home and made sure it was always clean and that her family’s clothes were always clean. She enjoyed being in the kitchen and was an excellent cook. Ruth was the strength of her family and was looked up to by many. In 1942, Ruth and JW moved to Council Bluffs but in 1985, they moved back to Harlan.

     Ruth went through much of her life without having a driver’s license but at the age of 50, and after three different instructors, she received her license from the State of Iowa.

     Ruth was a loving person and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also loved cats and often adopted strays, including Tiger who lived to be twenty-four years old.

     Ruth also spent many hours volunteering at area organizations, including the Broadway Methodist Church where she was also a member of the church auxiliary.

     Ruth died on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at the New London Nursing and Rehab Center in New London, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-seven years, six months, and eight days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband JW; her brother Victor; and her sisters-in-law Rosie Rhodes and Maxine Kemp.

     She is survived by her children: Rosalie Outka of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Patricia and her husband Dennis Bailey of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Jack Sorensen and his wife Judith of Bulverde, Texas; Robert Sorensen and his wife Joy of Sealy, Texas; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; other family members and friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Monday, July 27, 2009, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Rev. Dave Swinton officiated the 10:30 AM service with interment at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan. Serving as casket bearers were Ron Pash, Richard Andersen, Mert Kastens, Kirk Jacobsen, Jerry Chamberlain, and Richard A. Jones.


William “Bill” Sorensen - Age 58
    
William Albert Sorensen, son of Robert "Rusty" and Dorothy (Schneider) Sorensen, was born on October 10, 1951 in Harlan, Iowa. Bill attended school in Harlan and Graduated with the Harlan Community High School class of 1970.
     After high school, Bill joined the Unites States Army where he served overseas in Thailand, Germany and Egypt. While serving his country, Bill was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaves, Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Achievement Medal among others. While in the service, Bill also attended Central Michigan University where he received his Masters in Psychology. After his honorable discharge on June 30, 1990, Bill returned to Harlan and began working at CDS.
     Bill than began working for the Papillion-LaVista Schools in Omaha and later took the position of Veteran’s Affairs Officer for Shelby County. Bill took great pride in his country and assisting veterans throughout Shelby County. He was instrumental in bringing the Vietnam Memorial Wall traveling exhibit to Harlan and worked countless hours raising funds. Bill then worked for a short while at Mickel’s Restaurant in Harlan. Bill was also a proud member of the Earling American Post No. 615.
     Bill died on Friday, August 6, 2010 at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa having attained the age of fifty-eight years, nine months and twenty-seven days. He was preceded in death by his parents. Bill is survived by his brother Mike Sorensen and his wife Laura of Dow City, Iowa; his niece Amy and her husband Craig Crilly of Harlan; other relatives and many friends.
     Pastor Steven Chellew officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. The Earling American Legion Post No. 615 served as honorary casket bearers. Interment was held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.
