Edna C. Sampson - Age 92

     Edna Christine Sampson, the daughter of William and Marie Noelek Thies, was born on October 13, 1915 on her parents farm outside of Denison, Iowa. She was baptized on November 7, 1915 and confirmed on January 28, 1935 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. She attended country school near Denison and worked on her parents farm helping her dad with the chores and field work.

     On her 20th birthday, Edna was united in marriage to LeRoy Sampson on October 13, 1935 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They farmed in the Denison and Jefferson areas until 1952 when they moved to a farm south of Walnut, Iowa. They were the parents of eleven children. In 1956 they moved to a home in Walnut where Edna was active in being a Brownie leader for her girls when they were growing up. She was a longtime member of the Walnut Legion Auxiliary and also served as their Chaplain. She was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Walnut where she remained very active. Edna had a strong faith and always a smile on her face. She was always thinking of others and would bake a loaf of bread for any occasion and she made a quilt for many babies born. She was a "grandma" to whomever walked in her front door. Edna moved to Avoca in 2004 to live in the Senior Apartment Complex. She lived there until November 30,2007.

     Edna died on December 4, 2007 at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa having attained the age of ninety-two years, one month and twenty-one days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband LeRoy who died in March 1985, her son Robert who died in April of 1969; one grandson; one great grandchild; son-in-law Thomas Willie; sisters: Emma Vetter and Ella Thies and brother Walt Thies.

     Survivors include her children: David and his wife Carol of Hancock; John and his wife Kay of Walnut; Arnie and his wife Carol of Avoca; Mary Willie of Folsom, Louisiana; James of Walnut; Wayne and his wife Darlene of Neola; Susan Libby of Walnut; Walter and his wife Barb of Walnut; Martha and her husband Randy Hargens of Walnut and Joseph and his wife Margaret of Elliott; twenty nine grandchildren; forty-five great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; two sisters: Bertha Neuman and Anna Lackmann, both of Denison, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Friday, December 7, 2007 at 1:00 PM at the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Walnut, Iowa with Merlene Ostebee as the officiant. Serving as casket bearers wee Ryan Hargens, Sean Sampson, Michael Sampson, Desmond Armentrout, Johnny Sampson, Rob Sampson, Jason Sampson and Kevin Sampson. Interment was at the Layton Township Cemetery, Walnut, Iowa.

Russell M. Sandbothe, Sr. - Age 71

     Russell Michael Sandbothe, Sr., son of Steven John and Barbara Agnus (Pauley) Sandbothe, was born on June 23, 1937, at the RR farmhouse in Panama, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama and attended school at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama.

     In 1956, Russell enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country for two years. In 1958, he was honorably discharged.

     On April 8, 1961, Russell was united in marriage to Karen Lee Jensen at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. The couple moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where Russell worked two jobs at a time to support his new family, including working at Firestone and Wilson Packing House. In 1965, Russell and his family moved back to Panama where he began farming and continued to work at Wilson Packing House.

     After leaving Wilson Packing House, Russell began driving truck where he enjoyed seeing some of the country. He always enjoyed sharing his traveling memories with his children and grandchildren.

     In 1976, Russell and Karen went their separate ways but still remained close throughout the years.

     In the mid-1980's Russell sold the farm and moved to Nebraska where he became interested in scraping and worked as a Laborer for Local 1140 Labor Union. He remained in Nebraska for about ten years before he moved back to Iowa where he continued his scraping interest.

     When Russell wasn’t busy working, he enjoyed playing cards and going to auctions and sales. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Russell never really retired because he could always be found tinkering with sales and scraps

     Russell was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Earling Council No. 1741, of Earling, Iowa, and the Panama Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a parishioner of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama.

     Russell was found at his home on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, having attained the age of seventy-one years and four months. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Bernice Klindt.

     He is survived by his children: Beverly Jean Sandbothe and her significant other Thomas E. Turgeon of Omaha, Nebraska; Russell Michael Sandbothe, II and his significant other Becky Forman of Denison, Iowa; four grandchildren: Christopher William Lee Thomas Dougherty, MaryEllen Elizabeth Turgeon, Harley Starr-Lynn Turgeon, and Savannah Makayla Turgeon all of Omaha, Nebraska; his former wife Karen Lee Jensen of Denison; his brother Vernon J. Sandbothe and his wife Mary of Atlantic, Iowa; and his sisters: Clara Smith of Kansas City, Missouri; Mary Wright of Magnolia, Texas; and Bonnie Ferguson of Independence, Missouri; nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, November 8, 2008, at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Rev. Leonard Kenkel celebrated the 2:00 PM service. Serving has honorary pallbearers were: Christopher W.L.T. Doughtery, MaryEllen Elizabeth Turgeon, Harley Starr-Lynn Turgeon, and Savannah Makayla Turgeon. Inurnment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth, Iowa.

William Sandiland - Age 74

     William Edward Sandiland, the son of Earl and Louise (Jacobsen) Sandiland was born on February 3, 1934 in Avoca, Iowa. He attended school in Avoca and graduated with the class of 1952. After his graduation William entered the United States Navy during the Korean War, serving in Guam.

     William was united in marriage to Alice Johnson on October 24, 1958 in Avoca at the Trinity Lutheran Church. After their marriage, William worked as a butcher for a short time and then became a "tree surgeon" retiring in 1995. William enjoyed many activities but his favorite was Nebraska football where he was a season ticket holder to the Husker games for over thirty years and could be seen tailgating at the games. William played softball for many years and enjoyed sports, whether he was watching them or playing them. He loved eating egg salad sandwiches and pumpkin pie. While vacationing in Lake Okoboji, his favorite place to be was Tweeters. William was a member of American Legion Post 0331 of Omaha, the VFW and Electrical Brothers Union No. 1525.

     William died at his home in Omaha, Nebraska on Monday, September 1, 2008 having attained the age of seventy-four years, six months and twenty-nine days. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Earl.

     Survivors include his wife Alice of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Thelma Sandiland of Omaha, Nebraska; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Bev Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Dora Mae Clites of Little Rock, Arkansas; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

     Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 4, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Charlie Allen, Bill Sutton, John Herdzina, Mark Sandiland, David Sandiland and Greg Sandiland with interment at the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.


Noyon N. Schaaf - Age 89

     Noyon Nadine Schaaf, daughter of James and Ida R. (Loy) Chandler was born on August 29, 1918 on the Loy Family farm about two miles south of Avoca while her dad was serving in the Army during World War I. After her father was discharged from the Army, her family moved to the Chandler farm two miles northeast of Hancock. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from the Hancock High School where she was very active in school activities such as basketball, class plays and glee club. She was a baptized member of the Hancock Methodist Church and was active in the young peoples organizations. As a young girl, she was very active in 4-H where she won many awards on both the county and state levels.

     Noyon attended Simpson College for two years where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Following college, she was employed as a secretary at the Brandes Insurance Agency in Avoca. On August 29, 1943, she was united in marriage to Mervin Schaaf. Two children were born to this union: Douglas and Janelle. After their wedding, Mervin and Noyon lived on the Schaaf family farm where they ran a hog operation until they retired in 1980. In 1994, they moved into Avoca.

     Noyon was a faithful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church being very active in the women’s organizations and also served as past president. For a number of years, she was a 4-H leader and was an honorary member of the East Pottawattamie County 4-H Committee. She was also a member and past matron of the Avoca Chapter of Eastern Star; was Mother Advisor of the Avoca Chapter of Rainbow for Girls; served on the Harlan Hospital Auxiliary Board and also a member of Avoca Garden Club. She was a woman of deep religious faith, who worked hard and always cared for others. She was a conservative lady but was always very generous with her family.

     Noyon died on Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Elm Crest Retirement Community, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, three months and seventeen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Janelle Gilliland; two brothers: Dean and Norman Chandler, and her sister, Elaine Anderson.

     She is survived by her husband Mervin of Harlan, Iowa; her son Doug Schaaf and his wife Judy of Seattle, Washington; son-in-law John Gilliland of Harlan, Iowa; sister Wanda Chandler of Omaha, Nebraska; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Thursday, December 19, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Brent Soll, Nicholas Soll, Adam Caraher, John Gilliland, Dean Kock and Jerry Gilliland. Burial was held in the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.


Donald G. Schechinger - Age 46

    Donald Gerard Schechinger, son of Elmer and Margaret (Stessman) Schechinger was born on December 7, 1960 in Harlan, Iowa. He was one of fifteen children and had a twin brother, Ron. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Don attended school in Harlan, Iowa, and graduated from Harlan Community High School in 1980.

    He was united in marriage to Debra Dea on April 9, 1988. Four children were born to this union: Molly, Justin, Elizabeth, and Annabel. After their marriage, they made their home near Harlan.

    Throughout high school, Don worked for his father at Schechinger Seed Co. doing farming; conditioning soybeans and everything else that needed to be done. He continued to work there until the present time. When Don was not busy with work, he enjoyed helping Debra with all the housework including the laundry and dishes. Don also helped Debra with the maintenance of the garden they started together.

     Don was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia for many years and later became a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan where he spent many weekends ushering. In 1980, Don joined the Westphalia Volunteer Fire Department and continued to be a member even after becoming a member of the Harlan Fire Department.

    Don died on Thursday, November 8, 2007, at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, having attained the age of forty-six years, eleven months, and one day. He is preceded in death by his father.

     Don is survived by his wife of nineteen years, Debra Schechinger of Harlan; his children: Molly, Justin, Elizabeth, and Annabel Schechinger all of Harlan; his mother, Margaret Schechinger of Westphalia; his siblings: Connie and her husband Ron Carter, John Schechinger and his wife Cindy, Ray Schechinger and his wife Ann, Tom Schechinger and his wife Kay, Sharon and her husband Jim Bieker, Dan Schechinger and his wife Joan, Donna and her husband Galen Grabill, Ron Schechinger and his wife Konnie all of Harlan, Iowa, JoAnn and her husband Galen Schnack of Westphalia, Iowa, Glen Schechinger and his special friend, Denise Bever of Oakland, Iowa, Janice and her husband Chuck Assman of Earling, Iowa, Dean Schechinger and his wife Rita of Oakland, Lora and her husband Rick Zimmerman of Golden, Colorado, and Kevin Schechinger and his wife Tera of Oakland; nieces, nephews, and many friends.

    A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, November 12, 2007, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Celebrant of the 11:00 AM mass was Rev. Bob Hoefler. Serving as casket bearers were Ben Bieker, Brad Schechinger, Charles Grabill, Noah Dea, Jeremy Schechinger, and Shane Schechinger. Honor Guard was the Westphalia Volunteer Fire Department and the Harlan Fire Department with interment at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.

Dorothy Helen Schechinger - Age 97

     Dorothy Helen Schechinger was born in Earling, Iowa, on February 13, 1909, to Joseph and Mayme (Glawinski) Stephany. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. She grew up in Earling and attended the St. Joseph Catholic School in Earling.

     She was united in marriage to Joseph J. Schechinger on November 20, 1927, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Four children were born to this union: Gladys, Mildred, Bill, and Sandra. Dorothy was a mother and a homemaker throughout her life. She canned vegetables from her garden, baked a lot of homemade bread, cooked for the hired hands and did their laundry. Dorothy and Joe made their home and raised their children on the farm until 1960 when they retired and built a house on Baldwin Street in Harlan. Even after renting out the farm, Dorothy continued to keep track of all business matters relating to the farm.

Dorothy’s hobbies included making ceramics, gardening and flowers, knitting and crocheting and playing cards. She also enjoyed her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, and even four great-great-grandchildren. After the death of her husband, she liked to travel when she could.

     Dorothy remained in the home that she and her husband built until 2001, when she became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan.

     Dorothy died on Friday, January 19, 2007, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-seven years, eleven months, and six days. Her beloved husband Joe preceded her in death in 1966, as well as her son-in-law, Gary.

     Dorothy is survived by her children: Gladys and husband Leroy Anastasi of Harlan, Iowa, Mildred and husband Charles Behrendt of Harlan, Bill and wife Kay Schechinger of Yantis, Texas, and Sandra and her deceased husband Gary Stamp of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; her brother Paul and wife Phyllis Stephany of Harlan, thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, January 22, 2007, with Rev. Bob Hoefler officiating the 11:00 AM service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Serving as casket bearers were Jeff Stamp, Joe Schechinger, Pat Behrendt, Vicki Fagan, Mary Jo Sondag, Mike Behrendt, Barbara Evans, and Brian Stamp.

Maxine R. Scheel - Age 93

     Maxine Rosetta Scheel was born on April 24, 1915 to Walter and Polly Etta (Stephenson) Rieck in Guernsey, Iowa. The family moved to Walnut, Iowa when Maxine was four. She graduated from Walnut High School with the Class of 1932. She furthered her education at Simpson College and also took classes from Drake University. She received her teaching certificate and began teaching at a country school near Walnut and later was a substitute teacher for Walnut, Avoca, and Shelby schools as well as being a tutor.

     Maxine was united in marriage to Allen Henry Scheel on August 6, 1938. Three children were born to this union: Diane, Allen, and Polly. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca where she served on the church council, was Vice President of the church women and served on the Altar Guild for several years. She was a member and past president of the Avoca PEO Sisterhood for over fifty years as well as a member of the Avoca Women’s Federated Club where she also served as president.

     She was on the building committee for the Edwin Davis Memorial Library in Avoca, a member of the Avoca Library Board, and was the Red Cross drive chairman in Avoca for several years as well as handling other civic duties. She was a member of several bridge clubs and enjoyed traveling; taking trips to Prague, Czechoslovakia; Stockholm, Sweden; and Helsinki, Finland, when Allen and his family were assigned to the United States Embassies there. She also visited her children in the United States.

     Maxine moved to Peace Haven Retirement Home in Walnut in July of 2001 and became a resident of Avoca Assisted Living in October of 2006. Maxine died on Sunday, April 5, 2009, having attained the age of ninety-three years, eleven months, and twelve days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Allen, sisters Phyllis, Wanda, and Rose Ann; brother Walter and infant brother Everett.

     She is survived by her children: Diane and her husband John Polley of Lindale, Texas, Allen Scheel and his wife Donna of Springfield, Virginia, and Polly and her husband Ray Kostelc of Bonita Springs, Florida; her grandchildren: Jennifer and her husband Kevin Bushman of Ontario, Canada, Joseph Kostelc and his wife Nicole of Willow Springs, Illinois, Christine Kostelc of Clarendon Hills, Illinois, and Jason and Allison Scheel of Springfield, Virginia; great-grandchildren: John and Julia Bushman, Joseph, II and Alexander Kostelc; nieces and nephew; other family members and friends.

     A funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 with Pastor Dennis Reich leading the 11:00 AM service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Dr. Gary Johnson, Terry Carley, Lonn Nelsen, and Wylie King. Serving as casket bearers were Kevin Jacobsen, Ray Beebe, Wayne Jacobsen, J Olesen, Bob Luna, and Gene Sornsen. Interment was held at the Graceland Cemetery.

Ellen Irene "Nell" Schmidt - Age 86

     Ellen Irene "Nell" Schmidt, daughter of Frank August and Margaret "Maggie" (Mitchell) Skoch, was born at home, near Baileyville, Kansas, on November 11, 1919. Nell was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, Kansas. Nell attended country school just down the road from their family farm on ground that her father donated for the school. She later worked as a hired girl for her cousin, Pete Rettelle, and always helped out on her parents’ farm.

     Nell was united in marriage to Laurence Louis Schmidt on April 27, 1938, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, Kansas, the same church Laurence’s parents were married in. Four children were born into this union: Eugene, Janiece, Don and Larry. After their marriage, Laurence and Nell moved to the farm that Laurence had been farming the year before they were married.

     They remained here until moving to a farm south of Sabetha, Kansas for a few years and then moved to a farm near Sabetha Lake, west of Sabetha. This was their home until January of 1958, when the family moved to Harlan, Iowa, where Laurence was a district manager for Archer Oil. Nell sold Avon for nearly forty years. She always had a big garden and a tremendous amount of flowers. Nell loved birds, especially cardinals that she would catch and keep as pets when she young. Nell was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan.

     In July of 2002, Nell and Laurence relocated to the Dunlap Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunlap, Iowa. Laurence died on September 20, 2003, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunlap. Nell continued to make her home in Dunlap until her death on August 28, 2006, having attained the age of eighty-six years, nine months and seventeen days.

     In addition to her parents and husband, Nell was preceded in death by her brother Francis Skoch and four sisters, Mary Stallbaumer, Kate Stallbaumer, Teresa Reicherter and Rose Brady Dodd, and her grandson Steven Schmidt in 1965.

Nell is survived by her children Eugene Schmidt and his wife Betty of Harlan, Iowa; Janiece and her husband Tom Rau of Shelby, Iowa; Don Schmidt and his wife Katy of Gillette, Wyoming; Larry Schmidt and his wife Marilyn of Columbia Heights, Minnesota; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-four great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, August 31,2006 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Robert Hoefler as the celebrant. Interment was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, with Brian Schmidt, Dustin Schmidt, Michael Schmidt, Brett Sherer Pat Ferrel, and Mike Kienast serving as casketbearers.

Anna Rose is survived by her children:  Peter (Barbara) Schmieding of Imperial, MO, Sr. Mary Ann Schmieding, OSF of Omaha, NE, Cyril (Velva) Schmieding of Omaha, Bill (Pat) Schmieding of Omaha, and Michael (Wanda) Schmieding of Kansas City, KS; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and her sister Madonna Nielsen of San Angelo, TX.

 

Linda Ann Schiltz - Age 56

     Linda Ann Schiltz, daughter of Sylvin and Elvira (Finken) Miller, was born on November 24, 1950, near Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling and attended grade school at St. Joseph’s Catholic School. She later attended and graduated from high school in Harlan. After graduation, Linda attended nurses training and worked for a short time as a nurse.

      On August 8, 1970, Linda was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Schiltz at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Five boys were born to this union: Scott, Steve, Danny, David and Brad. Her boys were her life and her full time job so she quit her nursing profession to concentrate on their lives. She was a dedicated wife and loving mother who enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her family and friends. After her children were older, Linda began working part-time secretarial jobs with CDS, Myrtue Memorial Hospital and Agriwellness all in Harlan.

    Linda died at home outside of Earling surrounded by those she loved most on April 15, 2007, having attained the age of fifty-six years, four months and twenty-two days. She was proceeded in death by her father, Sylvin.

       She is survived by her husband, Robert "Bob" Schiltz of Earling, her sons: Scott Schiltz and his wife Jill of Earling, Iowa; Steve Schiltz and his wife Dawn; Danny Schiltz and his wife Dana; David Schiltz and his wife Shannon and Brad Schiltz all of Omaha, Nebraska; two grandsons; seven step-grandchildren; her mother, Elvira Miller of Earling; her sisters: Joanne Grady of Earling; Karen and her husband Ron Hutchison of Littleton, Colorado; Connie and her husband Don Reischl of Gretna, Nebraska; Charlotte and her husband Ron Willenborg of Manning, Iowa; Mary and her husband Bob Bissen of Earling and Julie and her husband Pat Rogers of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces and nephews other relatives and many friends.

      A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, April 18, 2007, with Rev. Tom Coenen serving as celebrant and Rev. Michael Berner serving as concelebrant in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Casket bearers were Jim Schiltz, Gene Schiltz, Pat Rogers, Don Reischl, Delmer Powell, Bob Bissen, Tony Schiltz, Ron Willenborg, Ron Hutchison, and Tony Allegretti. Interment was held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling, Iowa.

James "Jim" Schimerowski - Age 77

     James Joseph "Jim" Schimerowski was born on March 10, 1931 to Stanley and Magdalene (Ebert) Schimerowski in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School and graduated with the Class of 1949.

     Jim enlisted in the United States Navy on March 15, 1951. He served during the Korean War as an aircraft mechanic. After his honorable discharge in March of 1957, he returned to Iowa.

     On June 21, 1952, Jim was united in marriage to Mary Lou Kohles at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Seven children were born to this union: Jim, Mary Kay, JoAnn, Michael, Thomas, Bob, and Dave.

     Jim farmed in the Earling area his entire lifetime. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.

     Jim died on Sunday, January 18, 2009, having attained the age of seventy-seven years, ten months, and nine days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters: Helen, Sister Janice, and Jean and his brother-in-law Urban Bissen.

     He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years Mary Lou Schimerowski of Earling, Iowa; his children: Jim Schimerowski and his wife Deb of Helena, Montana, Mary Kay and her husband Jerry Michels of Minden, Iowa, JoAnn and her husband Rev. Brian Arnold of Logan, Ohio, Michael Schimerowski and his wife Lea of Clinton, Iowa, Thomas Schimerowski and his wife Randa of Great Falls, Montana, Bob Schimerowski and his wife Chris of New London, Minnesota, and Dave Schimerowski and his wife Martina of Lake Elmo, Minnesota; twenty-two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister Kathleen Bissen of Dewey, Arizona, brother Larry Schimerowski and his wife Carol of Earling, Iowa; brother-in-law Rex Heese of Carroll, Iowa; other family members and friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, January 22, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrating. Interment was held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling with Daniel Schimerowski, Joey Schimerowski, Derek Schimerowski, Matt Michels, Scott Schimerowski, and Mike Kohles serving as casket bearers.

Elizabeth "Betty" Schmidt - Age 69

     Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Schmidt was born on February 18, 1939 in Harlan, Iowa, to Godfrey "Fred" and Loretta (Herrig) Goeser. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. She attended St. Boniface Catholic School graduating with the Class of 1957.

     On September 17, 1960, she was united in marriage to Eugene "Gene" Schmidt at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Five children were born to this union: Julie, Steven, Shelli, Connie, and Staci.

     Betty worked at Moon’s Variety Store in Harlan until her first child was born. She stayed home to raise her children until her youngest daughter entered first grade. Betty then went to work at Myrtue Memorial Hospital where she worked in the Dietary Department for twenty-seven years, retiring in 2006. She made many life-long friendships with the kitchen gals.

     Betty enjoyed getting together with her family and grandkids and always made sure that there was more than enough food and goodies for all to enjoy. She loved spending time tending her flowers and had a knack for making them grow beautifully.

     Betty died on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, having attained the age of sixty-nine years, eight months, and eight days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Steven, and her sister Bernetta.

     She is survived by her husband Gene Schmidt of Harlan, Iowa; her children: Julie and her husband Mark Brehmer of Spencer, Iowa, Shelli and her husband Brett Sherer of Spring Hill, Iowa, Connie and her husband Mike Kienast of Harlan, and Staci Miover of Des Moines, Iowa; eleven grandchildren: Melissa and her husband Matt Heidesch of Ankeny, Iowa, Brian Sherer and his wife Kelcy of Evans Mills, New York, Jackie Fear and Devin Brehmer of Spencer, Iowa, Beth Sherer of Dubuque, Iowa, Andy Sherer of Spring Hill, Iowa, Carly, Emily, and Brogan Kienast of Harlan, and Jordan and Joshua Miover of Des Moines; her brother Bob Goeser and his wife Pat of Crescent, Iowa, sister Colleen and her husband Dick McLaughlin of Harlan, brother-in-law Larry Ulrich of Council Bluffs, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, with Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrating the 11:00 AM service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Casket bearers were Mike Kienast, Dan McLaughlin, Matt Heidesch, Brett Sherer, Tyler Heck, and Russ Goeser. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.

Eileen M. Schmitz - Age 84

     Eileen Mary Coenen Schmitz, daughter of Godfrey "Shorty" and Agnes (Michalski) Coenen, was born on November 18, 1925, in Westphalia, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church and attended St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia.

     On November 22, 1945, Eileen was united in marriage to Leonard Anthony Schmitz, son of Leo and Cecelia Zimmerman Schmitz, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Nine children were born to this union. After their marriage, Eileen and Leonard farmed near Westphalia. After Leonard’s death in 1991, Eileen continued to live on the farm for a few years and then moved to Harlan, where she became a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. In January 2005, she made her residence at the Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan.

     Eileen and Leonard operated the St. Hubert Clubhouse in Westphalia, Iowa, for several years.

     Eileen then spent most of her life as a care giver. Besides caring for her family, she worked at the Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa, then the County Care Facility of Shelby County and then did home care giving. She then found herself caring for her mother and then her husband.

     Eileen died on Thursday, December 31, 2009, at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-four years, one month, and thirteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard; two sons: Deacon Ronald in 2002 and Thomas Joseph in infancy; two grandchildren: Jason Schmitz and Audrey Schmitz; her sister, Rita Coenen Schulte; her sisters-in-law: Rose Maria Beran Coenen, Evelyn Schechinger Coenen, Betty Sieczkowski Coenen and her brothers-in-law: Charles Schomer, Francis Schulte and David Rau.

     She is survived by her children: Larry Schmitz and his wife Nancy of LaVista, Nebraska; Jack Schmitz of Red Oak, Iowa; Lenny Schmitz and his wife Doris of Harlan, Iowa; Shirley Haner of Elk Horn, Iowa; Doug Schmitz and his companion Lisa Morris of Papillion, Nebraska; Joe Schmitz and his wife Lory of Divide, Colorado; Brian Schmitz and his wife Michelle of Omaha, Nebraska; her daughter-in-law, Pam Schmitz of LeMars, Iowa; twenty grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; her siblings: Melvin Coenen of Harlan, Iowa; Clarence Coenen of Westphalia, Iowa; Virgil Coenen and his wife Mary Ann of Earling, Iowa; Elroy Coenen and his wife Betty of Aurora, Colorado; Madeline Schomer and Janice Rau both of Harlan, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, January 4, 2009, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrating the 11:00 AM service. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa, with Jared Schmitz, Jessica Morris, Ryan Schmitz, and Scott Morris acting as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were: Cody Haner, Matthew Schmitz, Mark Smith, Brad Schmitz, Nathan Schmitz, Joshua Schmitz, Derek Schmitz, and Jeremy Schmitz.

Ella Mae Schmitz - Age 90
    
Ella Mae Schmitz, daughter of Matt and Margaret (Heese) Schomers, was born on May 9, 1918, on her parents’ farm outside of Westphalia, Iowa, and was the first of five children. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia and graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School.

     On May 14, 1946, Ella Mae was united in marriage to Roman John Schmitz at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. To this union six children were born: Jane, Robert, James, Joyce, Ralph, and Gary.

     Ella Mae and Roman made their home on the family farm outside of Westphalia for over thirty years. During that time they were active members of the church and community. In 1979, Ella Mae and Roman retired from farming and moved into town.

     Ella Mae enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards, and spending time with her family and friends. She looked forward to family gatherings and had numerous photo albums of her loved ones. She also kept an ongoing journal of her thoughts and activities.

     In 2005, Ella Mae became a resident of Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa. It was there that she died on Friday, September 26, 2008, having attained the age of ninety years, four months, and seventeen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Roman; and her brothers: Francis, Cyril, Alfonse, and her sister Margaret Wageman.

     She is survived by her children: Jane and her husband Howard Scott of Yutan, Nebraska; Robert Schmitz and his wife Julie of Harlan, Iowa; James Schmitz of Westphalia, Iowa; Joyce and her husband Terry Clay of Harlan; Ralph Schmitz and his wife Janet of Polk City, Iowa; and Gary Schmitz and his wife Jeanie of Missouri Valley, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law Verena Schomers of Westphalia, Iowa; her brother-in-law John Wageman of Earling, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, September 29, 2008, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa with Rev. John Dorton officiating the 10:30 AM service. Serving as casket bearers were: Jerrod Scott, Jeff Schmitz, Greg Schmitz, Wes Clay, Brad Clay, Sam Schmitz, Trevor Schmitz, and Kevin Schmitz. Burial was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa.

Marcella "Sally" Schmitz - Age 93

     Marcella "Sally" Annette Schmitz was born on April 13, 1915, in Panama, Iowa, to Hubert and Anna (Mickels) Pauley. She was baptized at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa, and confirmed at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. She attended country school in Panama.

     On June 18, 1935, Sally was united in marriage to Nicholas Schmitz at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama. Eleven children were born to this union. After their marriage, the couple farmed southeast of Panama. Two years later, they moved to farm south of Panama. In July of 1940, their crops were hailed out and they were only able to raise carrots.

     They moved to a farm near Westphalia in 1945 and in 1950, purchased the farm from Nick’s father. Sally did custom decorating, papering, and painting for the people in the area. She worked at the Maidrite Café for several years. Later, she became a nurses aide at Myrtue Memorial Hospital. She then did in-home caregiving after retiring as a nurses aide.

     She moved off the farm in 1994 and later into Westridge Apartments in Harlan. She became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Home in 2008.

     Sally died on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, having attained the age of ninety-three years, one month, and fourteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one grandchild, and three great-grandchildren.

     Sally is survived by her children: Larry Schmitz and his wife Vicki of Westphalia, Iowa, Cletus Schmitz and his wife Janice of Harlan, Norman Schmitz and his wife Gloria of Harlan, Roger Schmitz and his wife Judy of Westphalia, Iowa, Russ Schmitz and his significant other Renee Davis of Glenwood, Iowa, Marvin Schmitz and his wife Joan of Harlan, Linda and her husband Jim Bender of Lambertville, Michigan, Velma and her husband Bruce Arkfeld of Defiance, Iowa, Jim Schmitz and his wife Vicki of Omaha, Nebraska, Doris and her husband Lenny Schmitz of Harlan, and Nancy and her husband Tom DeRuby of Bellevue, Nebraska; forty-six grandchildren; eighty-eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her brother Andy Pauley and his wife Grace of Panama; her sister-in-law Veronica Pauley of Woodbine, Iowa; brother-in-law Jerome Croghan of Manning, Iowa; and sister-in-law Marge Croghan of Manning; nieces and nephews; other family members, and friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, May 31, 2008, with Rev. John Dorton celebrating the 10:30 AM service with concelebrants Rev. Bob Hoefler and Rev. Don Bruck. Serving as casket bearers were Cletus Schmitz, Norman Schmitz, Marvin Schmitz, Roger Schmitz, Jim Schmitz, and Russell Schmitz. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa.

Rita E. Schmitz - Age 74

     Rita Ellen Schmitz was born on August 11, 1934, to John and Elizabeth (Malone) Smith in Panama, Iowa. She was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama and received her First Communion and was confirmed at St. Mary’s in Portsmouth. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Portsmouth and graduated with the Class of 1952.

     She was united in marriage to Lester Schmitz on November 24, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Five children were born to this union: Greg, Jim, Peg, John, and Susie. Rita worked at Mutual of Omaha and then became a homemaker.

     Rita was a devoted wife, loving mother, and fun-loving grandmother. She coached girls basketball and softball and attended her children’s numerous school and athletic events.

     Rita was also active in the St. Mary’s Rosary Society and decorated the altar for holidays. She taught CCD and volunteered at many school and parish events. Rita always wrote notes of encouragement to those going through hard times. She loved to garden, play cards, and spend time with her family.

     Rita died on Friday, September 19, 2008, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa , having attained the age of seventy-four years, one month, and eight days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Susie, and her siblings Jack, Bill, Michael and Mary Elizabeth.

     She is survived by her husband Lester, her children: Greg Schmitz and his wife Barb of Dallas, Texas, Jim Schmitz and his wife Alicia of Pasadena, California, Peg and her husband Tim Gaul of Ames, Iowa, and John Schmitz and his wife Kim of Iowa City, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Christine, Amy, Ben, Abby, Jacob, Aaron, Andrew, Isabella and Nicholas ; two great-grandchildren: Ava and Noah; her sister Marge and her husband Ray Madsen of Fort Collins, Colorado, sister-in-law Onie Smith of Council Bluffs, Iowa; nieces and nephews, other family members, and friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. The 10:30 AM service was celebrated by Rev. Paul Monahan and concelebrated by Rev. John Dorton. Casket bearers were Mark Danuser, Ben Gaul, Aaron Schmitz, Andrew Schmitz, Jacob Schmitz, Doug Schmitz, Ron Smith, Josh Weems, and Nicholas Schmitz. Interment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth, Iowa.

Mervin R. Schnack - Age 87

        Mervin Rudoph Schnack, son of Ernest Gustav and Bertha Ann (Kay) Schnack, was born on December 22, 1919, near Logan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed At Shelby Lutheran Church. He attended school at Tennant, Iowa and graduated with the class of 1937.

On June 17, 1945, Mervin was united in marriage to Mildred Doonan at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. After their marriage, they farmed in Shelby County throughout the years. He was a past member of the Tennant School Board. His family and farm were his life. Hearing his children play and laugh made his day when they were young. Mervin had a great sense of humor and always went out of his way to say something cute to make you laugh.

        Mervin enjoyed and took great pride in his farm, home, and cars. He kept them spotless at all times. Through the years, Mervin and Mildred followed their children’s school and sporting events. They were also active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church where they were longtime members.

        Mervin retired from farming in 1993 and moved to Harlan. While in Harlan, he was active with the Senior Citizen’s Center as well as with the Meals on Wheels program. Mildred died on November 18, 1994, and after her death Mervin remained at home in Harlan. He later moved to the Elm Crest Assisted Living Apartments and this has been his home since.

     He died at his apartment in Harlan on February 8, 2007, having attained the age of eighty-seven years, one month and seventeen days. In addition to his parents and wife, Mervin was preceded in death by his brothers Arnold, Elmer and his sister, Theresa Davis.

         He is survived by his son Gary Schnack and his wife, Kate of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his daughter, Sheryl and her husband Kevin Humlicek of Lincoln, Nebraska; his grandsons, Brandon and Nathan Humlicek of Lincoln; his sister Wilma and her husband Edwin Olson and his brother Ernie Schnack and his wife RoseAnn both of Harlan; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

         Funeral Services were held on Monday, February 12, 2007, with Pastor Steve Chellew and Pastor Heather Ploen both presiding over the 10:30 AM ceremony at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. Honorary casket bearers were Bud Hansen, Keith "Max" Goodner, Russell Haas, Bill Shannon, Willard Olson, Harold Peters, David Gibson, Merle Lawyer, LeRoy Cooper, Jim Boardman, Junior Block, Jess Boardman, and Vern Renze. Serving as casket bearers were Allan Olson, Randy Schnack, Ernie Peters, Dale Klindt, Galen Schnack, Merle Larson, and Wayne Olson. Interment was at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.

Richard R. Schneckloth - Age 89

     Richard Rudolph Schneckloth, the son of Carl H. “Charley” and Margaret (Schutt) Schneckloth, was born on July 9, 1917 in Benson, Minnesota.  Their family moved to the Council Bluffs, Iowa area near Lake Manawa.  He attended school at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs.

            After school, he moved to the Minden area and farmed with his parents and worked as a hired hand for neighboring farmers.  He entered the United States Army on March 18, 1942, at Ft. Des Moines.  While in the army he served his country in the Signal Corp repairing equipment during World War II in Naples, Rome, Greece and Africa.  He was honorably discharged from Ft. Leavenworth in Kansas on October 12, 1945.

            On December 18, 1949, Richard was united in marriage to Emma Sick in Harlan, Iowa.  After their marriage, they rented a farm outside of Harlan until 1956 when they moved to a farm near Neola.  They were the parents of four children: Dennis, Diane, Charlene and Roger.  Emma died March 15, 1963, and Richard continued to make his home on the farm near Neola.

            On November 25, 1966, Richard was united in marriage to Doris Felton in Neola, Iowa.  They were the parents of four children: Terry, Ken, Tom and Mike.  They made their home in Neola where he worked as a general contractor specializing in plumbing and carpentry.  He continued working out of his home until his retirement in 1994.  Doris died October 17, 2000, and he continued to make his home in Neola until November of 2006 when he moved to the Oakland Manor.

            He died on January 6, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, five months and twenty-eight days.  In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by his daughter Diane and his son Terry.

            He is survived by his children: Dennis Schneckloth and his wife Barb of Oakland, Iowa, Charlene Lancaster, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Roger Schneckloth and his wife Beth of Neola, Iowa, Ken Schneckloth of Neola, Tom Schneckloth and his wife Kelli of Minden, Iowa, Mike Schneckloth of Neola; his son-in-law, Rick Lancaster, of Colorado Springs; eleven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; his sister, Evelyn Stortenbecker, Treynor, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

            Funeral Services were held on Thursday, January 11, 2007 at 10:30 AM with Pastor Dean Sparr serving as the clergy.  Casket bearers were Rick Fox, Dick Fox, Quentin Stortenbecker, Ron Stortenbecker, Steve Cary and Dustin Cary.  Interment was held in the Minden Cemetery with Military grave side rites by the American Legion Post No. 437 on Minden.

Bernice Buman Schomer - Age 92

     Bernice Buman Schomer was born on June 14, 1914, in rural Tennant, Iowa, to John and Helen (Rosman) Buman. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth, Iowa. She attended grade school and graduated from high school in Tennant, Iowa. She went on to attend college at St. Mary’s, Notre Dame in Indiana, and Duschene in Omaha, Nebraska. After completing her education, she taught third and fourth grades in Tennant, Iowa, for six years, until her marriage.

        She was united in marriage to Joseph Schomer on June 22, 1943, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. There were six children born to this union: Joe Jr., Mary, Rose, Pat, Kathleen, and Stephan. She was a very loving mother and mentor to her children and was involved in her children’s activities. She was a 4-H leader for the Lincoln Bluebirds. She taught religious education at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, read to the residents at Elm Crest Retirement Center, and served on the Community Chest Board.

      Bernice loved to sew and made special cross-stitches for the Baptisms, First Communions and Marriages of her grandchildren. She loved flowers of all kinds and spent many hours in her gardens. Bernice was a particularly good cook and baker. Her sweet rolls and bread were sought after by her family and friends. Joe and Bernice lived on the family farm until 1999 when they moved into Harlan.

      Bernice died on Wednesday, February 7, 2007, having attained the age of ninety-two years, seven months, and twenty-four days. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helen Buman, and her siblings: Edwin Buman, Corrine Anastasi, Wanda Jurshack, and Kenneth Buman.

      Bernice is survived by her husband of sixty-four years, Joseph Schomer, her children: Joe Schomer, Jr. of Daytona Beach, Florida, Mary and her husband Myron Goodman of Salisbury, North Carolina, Rose and her husband Kenneth Nielsen of LaCanada, California, Pat and her husband Mike Laas of Bettendorf, Iowa, Kathleen Kohorst of Harlan, Iowa, and Stephan and his wife Tammy Schomer of Iowa City, Iowa, nineteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

      Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at 10:00 AM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa with Rev. Robert Hoefler as the Celebrant. Serving as casket bearers were John Kohorst, Myron Joseph Goodman, Jr., Molly Laas, Buck Bucholz, David Schomer and Joe Schomer III. Interment was held in the St. Boniface Cemetery, Westphalia, Iowa.

Joseph Schomer - Age 92

     Joseph Schomer, son of Jacob and Mary (Petsche) Schomer, was born on February 6, 1916 outside of Westphalia, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa and graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School.

     On June 22, 1943, Joe was united in marriage to Bernice Buman at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Six children were born to this union: Joe, Jr.; Mary; Rose Anne; Patricia; Kathleen; and Stephan. Joe and Bernice lived in Harlan for a while before moving to a small farm east of Tennant. Joe started doing plumbing and electrical work as well as farming. Although he enjoyed his work very much, he enjoyed the people around the Harlan area even more. He also loved music and photography.

     Joe and Bernice moved to Harlan in the spring of 1998. After Bernice’s death on February 7, 2007, Joe moved to Elm Crest Retirement Center in Harlan. Joe was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan.

     Joe died on Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan having attained the age of ninety-two years, one month, and three days. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Bernice; and his son-in-law Bob Kohorst.

     He is survived by his children: Joe Schomer, Jr. of Daytona Beach, Florida; Mary and her husband Myron Goodman of Salisbury, North Carolina; Rose and her husband Kenneth Nielsen of LaCanada, California; Pat and her husband Mike Laas of Bettendorf, Iowa; Kathleen Kohorst of Harlan, Iowa; and Stephen Schomer and his wife Tammy of Iowa City, Iowa; nineteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters: Loretta Wilson and Leona Kaufman, both of Westphalia; nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.

     Father Bob Hoefler celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Casket bearers were Robert Anastasi, John Buman, Edwin Buman, Leonard Kaufman, Kelly Laas, Molly Laas, Kent Morgan, and Robert Wilson. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa.

Verena C. Schomers - Age 86

     Verena Catherine Schomers, daughter of Joseph and Marie(Mueller) Henscheid, was born on June 3, 1922, in Muenster, Texas, as the first of eight children and moved to Westphalia, Iowa a year later. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia and graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School in 1939.

     On October 5, 1949, Verena was united in marriage to Cyril Joseph Schomers at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Three children were born to this union: Michael Mathias, Mary Margaret, and Marilyn Kay.

     Cyril and Verena made their home on the family farm outside of Westphalia. During that time they were very active members of the church and community. In 1977 our dear Lord called Cyril home. Verena and the children finished the construction of their lovely home in Westphalia where Verena lived for the next thirty-one years.

     Verena thoroughly enjoyed her family, relatives, and many friends. She spent much time in prayer, hand embroidered hundreds of baby quilts and pillows, made doll quilts and pillows, quilted with the Sewing Circle ladies, enjoyed playing piano by ear and also enjoyed playing cards, Bingo, Scrabble, Jumble puzzles, the Omaha World Herald and Catholic Digest. She also loved her geraniums, impatiens and mini-garden.

     In September 2008, Verena became a resident of the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa. It was there she died on Friday, February 20, 2009, having attained the age of eighty-six years, eight months and seventeen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Cyril; and her brothers Jeron and Virgil.

     She is survived by her children: Michael Schomers of Westphalia; Mary and her husband Jim Tomky of Amherst, Colorado; and Marilyn and her husband Denny Grote of Dunlap, Iowa; her grandchildren: Thomas, Theresa, and Timothy Grote of Dunlap; her brother Urban Henscheid and his wife Therese of Westphalia; her sisters: Marie and her husband Tom Case of Charter Oak, Iowa; Sally and her husband Roman Leuschen of Westphalia, Iowa; Jane and her husband Leo Rau of Omaha, Nebraska; and Iona Smith of Council Bluffs, Iowa; her sister-in-law Theresa Henscheid of Westphalia; her brother-in-law John Wageman of Earling, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, February 23, 2009, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Rev. John Dorton celebrated the 10:30 AM service and Deacon Marvin Klein concelebrated. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia with Pat Smith, Bev Schulte, Jane Grote, Bill Schomers, Ron Schomers, Joyce Clay, Joyce Mumm, and Ed Henscheid acting as casket bearers.


Dexter Adolph Schroeder - Age 84Dexter Schroeder
    
Dexter Adolph Schroeder, the son of Walter H. and Ella Dorthea Woltmann Schroeder, was born on November 14, 1921, at Hancock, Iowa. He

attended school in Pottawattamie County and was a member of the graduating class of 1940. On October 28, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Crook, Nebraska. Dexter served his country during World War II in the Asiatic Theater, serving in India for twenty-nine months. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal. On February 6, 1946, Dexter was honorably discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

     On November 25, 1949, Dexter was united in marriage to Jean Ione Maassen at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Judy, Nancy, Jane and David. After their marriage, the couple lived on a farm south of Audubon and then moved to a farm in Walnut, Iowa. In 1955, the couple moved to the Maassen Family Farm. Dexter served on the Shelby County A.S.C.S. for Lincoln Township, receiving ten years of service award. He was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post No. 941 and past commander. Dexter was an active member of the Congregational Church and served on many committees. He also drove truck for various people and construction companies. He enjoyed farming, family gatherings and fishing, which he did later in life.

     Dexter died on Monday, May 22, 2006, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-four years, six months and eight days. In addition to his parents, Dexter was preceded in death by his brother and sisters-in-law, Ivan Schroeder and his wife, Veta, and Janice Schroeder and sister, Dorthea Keller.

     Survivors include his wife, Jean of Harlan, Iowa; his children: Judy Schroeder of Omaha, Nebraska; Nancy and her husband, Tim Peterson of Fremont, Nebraska; Jane and her husband, Terry Burger of Las Vegas, Nevada; David Schroeder and his wife, Lisa of Woodbury, Minnesota; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers: Lloyd Schroeder of Rockaway Beach, Missouri; Howard Schroeder and his wife, Harriet of Inver Grove, Minnesota; brother-in-law: Arlie Keller of Atlantic, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 25, 2006, at the Congregational United Church on Christ in Harlan, Iowa, at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Donna Ewert officiating. Military Rites were conducted in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, by the American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 and the Shelby County VFW Post No. 941. Serving as casket bearers were David Schroeder, Ed Keller, Brad Schroeder, Todd Schroeder, Tim Peterson, Dan Petersen, and Terry Burger.

Jeffery O. Schueman - Age 49

     Jeffery Otto Schueman, the son of James O. and Phyllis Myers Schueman, was born on March 13, 1958 in Harlan, Iowa, and was one of three children in the family.  He attended school in Avoca and graduated with the Class of 1976.  During high school he worked for Harry Wendt doing painting.  He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa.

     Jeff was united in marriage to Dianne Emken on July 16, 1988 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. Jeff was employed at his fathers Trucking Company; J & P Trucking and later Double 'S'; where he worked in the shop and also drove truck. He then went to work for Steve Emken Trucking as a mechanic. Jeff enjoyed bowling, sports, which included his love for the Cubs, the Chicago Bears and biking. He also loved spending time with his pets.

    Jeff died on Sunday, August 26, 2007 at his home in Avoca having attained the age of forty-nine years, five months and thirteen days. He was preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis.

    Survivors include his wife, Dianne; his father James O. Schueman; his brother James Schueman and his wife, Janee', all of Avoca, Iowa; his sister, Linda and her husband, Juan Cruz, of Greeley, Colorado; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

    Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy and Mr. Wayne Paulsen as the Eulogist. Serving as Honorary Casket Bearers were Steve Emken, Chris Cruz, Keith Schueman, Jessica Poppe, Matt Schueman and Janeen Schueman. Casket Bearers were Wayne Allen, Steve Pankonen, Dean Schueman, Dave Schueman, Ron Rehfeldt, Randy Mogensen, Jeff Paulsen and Brad Thornton. Interment was held in Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.


Phyllis Jane Schueman - Age 82

     Phyllis Jane Myers Schueman was born on October 9, 1924 in Shelby County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Charley and Christina Ronnfeldt Myers and was one of four children in the family. She attended a Shelby country grade school, Tennant High School and graduated from Avoca High School.

     Phyllis was united in marriage to James O. Schueman on June 28, 1945 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They are the parents of three children; James Dale, Linda Rose and Jeffery Otto. Phyllis was a homemaker and a loving mother and wife. She was always willing to help family or others when in need. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her many flowers, cooking and taking care of her lovely home. Phyllis was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa.

     Phyllis died at her home in Avoca on Tuesday, January 2, 2007. She had attained the age of eighty two years, two months and twenty four days. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers Robert, Victor and Dick Myers.

     Phyllis is survived by her husband of sixty one years, James O. Schueman of Avoca, Iowa; her children: James Dale Schueman and his wife Janeé of Avoca, Linda Rose Cruz and her husband Juan of Greeley, Colorado and Jeffery Otto Schueman and his wife Dianne, also of Avoca; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Saturday, January 6, 2007 at 10:30 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich officiating along with Wayne Paulsen. Serving as Honorary casket bearers were Janeen Schueman and Jessica Poppe with Chris Cruz, Keith Schueman, Matt Schueman, Bob Myers, Dick Myers, Jr., and Brian Wageman serving as casket bearers. Interment was held in the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.

Steven M. Schuemann - Age 59

     Steven Michael Schuemann, son of Harry "Mo" and Carol Ann (Knouse) Schuemann, was born on April 26, 1949 in Harlan, Iowa. He attended school in Newton, Iowa and received his GED in 1991.

     After school, Steve began working at Oakland Beef in Oakland, Iowa. He continued to work in Oakland until 1977 when he became the owner of Shade Tree Salvage Yard in Harlan where he worked until his retirement in 1998.

     On February 14, 2004, Steve was united in marriage to Patrice C. Young in Harlan, Iowa. After their wedding, the couple made their home in Harlan.

     Steve died on Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of fifty-nine years, ten months, and fourteen days. He is preceded in death by his parents.

     He is survived by his wife Patrice Young of Harlan, Iowa; his son Michael Schuemann and daughter Karen Schuemann both of Harlan; three grandchildren; his brother Daniel Schuemann and his wife Cindy of Jefferson City, Missouri; his sisters Lu Ann and her husband Steve Lyon of Juneau, Alaska and Jo Dee and her husband David Lansford of Saratoga, Florida; nieces; nephews; other family members and friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Monday, March 16, 2009, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Dave Swinton officiated the 10:30 AM service. Inurnment was held at Bowman’s Grove Cemetery in Rural Harlan, Iowa, with Mike Young, Bryan Schuemann, Jose Leal, Dan Schuemann, Mike Schuemann, Rick Fields, and Kevin Elder serving as casket bearers.

Derald "Jiggs" Schuning - Age 78

           Derald William Schuning, the son of Orvel and Margaret (Ehlers) Schuning was born on February 5, 1929 in Minden, Iowa. They lived on a farm until Derald was eight years old when they moved into Minden. Derald was baptized and confirmed in the old Minden Congregational Church. He attended country school and then Minden High school and graduated in 1947. He played basketball for Minden High School and was "Athlete of the Year." Derald also played basketball on a Minden Town Team after graduation. While in school he always walked out to his Grandfather Schuning's farm to help on the weekends. Farming was his first love and he bought a used tractor, plow and two row corn picker so he could custom work around the area. He also baled hay for many farmers. His love of farming never left him.

           Derald spent many hours watching his grandchildren play sports. He attended many football games, basketball and volleyball games and his grandchildren would only need to look up in the bleachers to see their grandpa there. He also loved to listen to his granddaughter, Jessica sing. Lately his most favorite sport was stock car racing. He attended many races every Saturday night with his daughter Marilyn and had a favorite driver in every race. His favorite NASCAR driver was Jeff Gordon.

          Derald was united in marriage to Darlene Elsie Lubbe on February 5, 1951 in the Minden Congregational Church. They started farming on Rev. John Frieboes's farm west of Oakland. After that, they lived in Carson, Treynor and Persia areas before moving to Harlan in 1996. To this union three children were born. Derald was a seed corn salesman and supervisor for forty-four years making many friends whom he cherished. He and his wife and children raised many hogs over the years and saw many changes in the livestock business. Derald and his children enjoyed riding horses and rode in many area parades and trail rides.

           Derald died on Friday, February 23, 2007 at the Little Flower Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa having attained the age of seventy-eight years and nineteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Ramona Kardell.

         Survivors include his wife, Darlene of Harlan; his children: Richard Schuning and his wife Dyan of Neola, Iowa; Diane and her husband Calvin Nielsen of Harlan, Iowa and Marilyn and her husband Pat McKeighan of Council Bluffs, Iowa; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one sister Sharon and her husband Virgil Hoff of Fountain, Colorado; a sister-in-law Velma Lubbe of Harlan, Iowa and a brother-in-law George Kardell of Dallas, Texas; many nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.

        Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Brian Wohlhuter as the clergy. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Ron Barrier, Charlie Malone, Larry Ehlers, Doug Kunze, Monte Schechinger and Randy Miller. Serving as casket bearers were Todd Hansen, Blake Cooper, Justin Miller, Raymond Freese, Chad Hansen and Lanny Newland. Interment was held in the Minden Cemetery, Minden, Iowa.

Doris Schuning - Age 70

     Doris Marie Schuning, daughter of Bert and Helen (Turner) Niklasen, was born on June 1, 1938 in Kimballton, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa. She attended country school at Sharon #4 through the eighth grade then attended Elk Horn-Kimballton where she graduated with the Class of 1956. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls, Iowa, graduating in 1958 and began her teaching career with the second grade in Avoca, Iowa. She was also the girls’ basketball chaperone.

     On August 7, 1959, Doris was united in marriage to LaVerne "John" Schuning at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Janelle, Craig, and Trent.

     Doris taught for many years in the Harlan Community School District until her youngest child was born. She then became a full-time mom. She later returned to work in the Harlan School District as a teacher’s aide, office assistant, and playground teacher until she retired in 2000. Even today, former students refer to her as their favorite playground teacher.

     Doris enjoyed quilting with the gals at the Senior Center, reading, and playing solitaire on the computer. She loved traveling, especially to Texas in the winter months and just this past winter, to Arizona. Her grandkids were important to her and she attended all of their activities. She canned vegetables and was an excellent cook and loved to share her goodies with family and friends. She was an active volunteer for the Bloodmobile, American Cancer Society board, Relay For Life committee and Hospice. She and John helped a lot of people through the years by driving them to treatments, visiting, and offering encouragement. She took school pictures every fall for many years, did clerical work for the church and was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

     Some of her favorite times were taco night at the Westphalia Clubhouse and the daily Burger King coffee club. For many years she did beautiful artwork and gave her paintings away to family and friends who still cherish them today.

     Doris died on Monday, July 14, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center having attained the age of seventy years, one month, and thirteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents.

     She is survived by her husband John Schuning of Harlan, Iowa; their children: Janelle and her husband Kurt Musfeldt of Harlan; Craig Schuning and his wife Karla of Shawnee, Kansas; and Trent Schuning and his wife Traci of Portsmouth, Iowa; five grandchildren: Chelsea Musfeldt; Thane Schuning and his wife Nicole; and Taylor, Tifani, and Taryn Schuning; her sisters: Myrna and her husband Fred Anthony, Jr. of Pella, Iowa and Jean and her husband Richard Woods of Trenton, Missouri; her brother Dale Niklasen and his wife Betty of Kimballton, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends. She will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her.

     A funeral service was held on Thursday, July 17, 2008 with Pastor Steven Chellew conducting the 10:30 AM service at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Chelsea Musfeldt, Taylor Schuning, Tifani Schuning, Taryn Schuning, and Nicole Schuning. Serving as casket bearers were David Pope, Thane Schuning, Scott Woods, Jerrad Popp, David Niklasen, Jim Hansen, Mark Anthony, and Danny Schneider. Interment was held in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.

Catherine "Peggy" Schwarte - Age 74

     Catherine "Peggy" Estella Schwarte, daughter of Henry and Cecelia (Mueller) Kaufman, was born on March 7, 1934, in Earling, Iowa. She was one of ten children. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling and graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Earling.

     On April 10, 1956, Peggy was united in marriage to Martin "Mert" A. Schwarte at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling.. Three children were born to this union: Randall, Wayne, and Mary Lea. After their wedding, the couple made their home in Shelby County and Peggy worked at Tinsley’s Jewelry Store in Harlan for several years before becoming a caretaker at Regal Towels with Mert in Council Bluffs for nine years.

     Peggy was a loving person and always wanted to help others. She took care of the elderly in their homes by doing laundry, cooking, and cleaning for them. When Peggy wasn’t busy working, she loved to spend time with her family. She was always there for them, especially for her loving, generous, and kind husband, Mert.

     Peggy died on Thursday, February 12, 2009, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-four years, eleven months, and five days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her siblings: Joe Kaufman, Frank Kaufman, Mary Mundt, Helen Reinig, Louis Kaufman, Genevieve Weller, and Therese Fromm.

     She is survived by her husband Mert Schwarte of Harlan, their children: Randy Schwarte and his wife Mona of Westphalia, Iowa; Wayne Schwarte of Harlan; and Mary Lea and her husband Randy Booth of Westphalia; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her brother Mike Kaufman of Omaha, Nebraska; her sister-in-law Vivian Kaufman of Woodbine, Iowa; her brother-in-law Gordon Weller of Westside, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, February 16, 2009, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrated the 11:00 AM service.

Glenn I. Schwarte - Age 57

     Glenn Isadore Schwarte, was born on February 17, 1949, in Earling, Iowa, the son of Lavina (Leinen) and Wilfred Schwarte. He passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2006, at his home in Colorado.
     Glenn received his education at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Earling, Iowa, and was a member of the graduating class of 1967. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army. Glenn served his country in Vietnam. He received his honorable discharge on April 29, 1973.
     Glenn was united in marriage to Carol Ann Mason on July 19, 1975, in McCook, Nebraska. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Denison, Iowa. They were the parents of two children: Heather and Thomas. Glenn worked in taxes and insurance. He was awarded an ITT Award for outstanding performance and achievement in group sales. Glenn was also awarded an ITT Award for the Distinction of Membership in the 1977 Executive Club. After a few years of residing in Denison, Iowa, the family moved to Morrison, Colorado, and later to Littleton, Colorado.
     Glenn’s favorite past-time was spending time with his children. He and his son enjoyed playing baseball together and he recently helped Heather with the landscaping at her home.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wilfred “Swede” Schwarte and his step-father, Ivo Blum.
     Those remaining to cherish his memory include his mother, Lavina Blum of Earling, Iowa; his wife, Carol; his daughter, Heather and her fiancé George Taylor, and his son, Thomas “TJ” all of Colorado; his brothers and sisters: Alice and her husband, Ron Reiser; brother, Jerry Schwarte and his wife, Starr; brother, Larry Schwarte and his wife, Becky all of Denison, Iowa; brother, Ken Schwarte and his wife, Rose of Reed Springs, Missouri; sister, Sally and her husband, Jeff Lass of Pilot Mound, Iowa; sister, Connie and her husband, Rod Summerfield of Dunlap, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Military Rites were conducted in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling, Iowa, by the American Legion Post No. 615 of Earling, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Jim Reiser, Steve Schwarte, Scott Koppit, Jason Schwarte, Brandon Summerfield, and Kevin Beymer.

Isidore Schwarte - Age 94

     Isidore Leonard Schwarte was born on February 9, 1913, to Herman and Rose (Lehan) Schwarte in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling and attended grade school and high school at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Earling.

       Isidore enlisted in the United States Army in March of 1941, serving during World War II as a truck driver and as a driver for a general. He was stationed for a time in Kodiak, Alaska. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and the American Theater Ribbon before his honorable discharge from service in November of 1945. He served a total of four years, five months, and thirteen days.

        On January 21, 1943, Isidore was united in marriage to Meritta Hendricks at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Robert, Shirley, and Tami.

       Isidore farmed north of Harlan for several years. During this time, he and Meritta enjoyed going to dances, especially polkas, with their friends. They also liked to get together with friends and play cards.

       Isidore was the manager of the Harlan City Roller Mill where they produced rolled oats for livestock. He remained at the mill until his retirement. After his retirement, he mowed lawns until he had his heart attack in 1992. He went to California in January of 2005, where he lived with his son for a year and a half.

        He then returned to his home in June of 2006 and lived in his own home. He was admitted to Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan on February 6, 2007. He went home on February 12, 2007. He was re-admitted to Myrtue on February 19th and stayed until March 15th when he was discharged to Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa. On March 19th, he was transferred to Creighton Medical Center. From that point, he stayed at Creighton until March 28th when he was transferred back to Little Flower Haven.

           It was there that he died on March 29, 2007, having attained the age of ninety-four years, one months, and twenty days. Isidore was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of sixty years, Meritta Schwarte, his four brothers: Joseph, Frank, Wilford, and Henry, and one sister, Quirina Bauman.

          Isidore is survived by his son Robert Schwarte of Huntington Beach, California; his daughters: Shirley Welker of Harlan, Iowa and Tami and her husband William Stinn of Westphalia, Iowa; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his sister Rosetta Hendricks of Harlan, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

          A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 with Rev. Bob Hoefler conducting the 11:00 AM service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Ron Kleffman, Albert Schwarte, Ralph Bauman, Larry Welker, Richard Schwarte, Joe Schwarte, Jr., and Gene Hendricks. Military rites were held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, by Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 and Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150.


Michael W. Schwarte - Age 93

     Michael William Schwarte, the son of William and Mary Ann Schiltz Schwarte, was born on June 25, 1912, at Westphalia, Iowa. He attended schools at St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia, Des Moines Catholic College in Des Moines, Iowa, St. Paul Seminary in Minnesota, and Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

     He was ordained by Bishop Gerald T. Bergan on June 11, 1938, given an interim appointment at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Osceola, then to St. Patrick’s in Perry, Iowa. At St. Francis Zavier, Rev. Michael was a Catholic Youth Director of the Deanery. In 1942, he went to Dowling High School in Des Moines, Iowa, as a teacher, Director of Athletics for eighteen years, and director of the band for three years. For eight years, Rev. Schwarte was President of the State Athletic Conference for Private Schools and aided in merging that conference with the Iowa High School Athletic Association. With Merle Schlampp of Roosevelt, he helped form the present Metropolitan League in Des Moines. Father was President of Dowling and Vicor Foraine of the East Deanery. He was named Monsignor in 1959 by Pope John XXIII.

     In 1965, Monsignor became pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa, and directed consolidation of parochial schools in Shelby County. He was a member of the first Diocesan Board of Education and wrote its constitution. He also served on the formation board of the Diocesan Council of Priests for eleven years. Monsignor served on the board planning the Regional Councils to replace the Deanery System, and on the formation board of the Diocesan Pastoral Council for two years.

     After World War II, Monsignor Schwarte helped Father Gorman with refugees and displaced persons. He made his first round-the-world trip in 1951, which formed an interest in underdeveloped areas served by missionaries. He made six round-the-world trips to assist the underdeveloped areas and missions of the world.

     In 1969, Monsignor Schwarte became pastor of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa; in 1973, he became pastor of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa, and on July 17, 1975, after thirty-eight years of teaching, he became pastor of St. John’s Parish in Cumming.

     In 1982, Msgr. Schwarte retired and resided in Portsmouth, Iowa. On July 7, 1998, he became a resident of the Little Flower Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Earling, Iowa. It was there that he died on Wednesday, May 31, 2006, having attained the age of ninety-three years, eleven months and six days. In addition to his parents, Msgr. Schwarte was preceded in death by his brothers and sister: Herman, Joseph, William, Sylvan, and Raymond Schwarte and Bernice Schwarte.

     Survivors include his brothers and sisters: William Schwarte of Earling, Iowa; Marie and her husband, Joe Sullivan of Panama, Iowa; Caroline Esser of Logan, Iowa; Margaret and her husband, Jerry Eipperle of Omaha, Nebraska; Martin Schwarte and his wife, Peggy of Harlan, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 A.M. on Monday, June 5, 2006, at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa with the Most Rev. Joseph L Charron, C.PP.S. celebrating and Rev. John Dorton concelebrating. Interment was weld at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa with Randy Schwarte, John Sullican, David Schwarte, Tom Schwarte, Joe Esser and Mike Fecci serving as casket bearers.

Michael R. Schwarte - Age 67

     Michael Robert Schwarte was born on August 30, 1940, to Joseph and Helen (Ratigan) Schwarte in Earling, Iowa. He attended grade school in Defiance, Iowa. He lived at home with his parents until 1972 when he went to live at Handicap Village in Clear Lake, Iowa. He moved to New Hope Village in Carroll, Iowa, when that facility opened.

     Michael was artistic and thoroughly enjoyed painting and doing woodworking. He liked to put puzzles together and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, watching games on t.v. whenever he could. He also spent a lot of time watching western movies and listening to country music.

     Michael had lived at New Hope Village since their opening in 1977. He died at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Carroll on Monday, March 31, 2008, having attained the age of sixty-seven years, seven months, and one day. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Eugene and Dwayne.

     He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Irene and her husband Edwin Reischl of Manning, Iowa, Albert Schwarte and his wife Gay of Defiance, Iowa; Harold Schwarte of Carroll, Iowa, Sister Madonna Schwarte of Omaha, Nebraska, Sister Darlene Schwarte of Davenport, Iowa, Thelma and her husband Gordon Nelson of Harlan, Iowa, Karen and her husband Clarence Brinker of Westphalia, Iowa, Richard Schwarte and his wife Myrna of Irwin, Iowa, and Joseph Schwarte and his wife Vernita of Defiance, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: Marilyn Schwarte of Manilla and Glenda and husband Lew Hall of Defiance; nieces and nephews, other family members, and his many friends at New Hope Village, his home for thirty-one years.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 with Rev. Michael Berner celebrating the 10:30 AM service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Lew Hall, Edwin Rieschl, Harold Schwarte, and Terry Schwarte. Serving as casket bearers were Gordon Nelson, Richard Schwarte, Albert Schwarte, Joseph Schwarte, Clarence Brinker, and Dameian Schwarte. Interment was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Defiance, Iowa.

William H. Schwarte, Jr. - Age 92

     William Herman Schwarte, Jr., the fourth child of William and Mary Ann (Schiltz) Schwarte, was born on February 28, 1916, on a farm half a mile north of Westphalia, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia and attended grade school and high school at St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia. After graduation, William worked for his father on the farm and helped out neighbors and relatives with their farming duties.

     From 1941 to 1950, William went to Holy Rosary Mission in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. There he managed the dairy and farm for two years and then ran the garage and taught mechanics to the boys at the school for seven years.. He also was a referee when the Harlem Globe Trotters came through Pine Ridge.

     On February 16, 1950, William was united in marriage to Verena "Fern" Marie Schmitz at St. Boniface Catholic Church. After their wedding, William and Fern farmed northwest of Panama where they eventually retired in 1982.

     In January 2002, William became a resident at the Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa. It was here that he died on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, having attained the age of ninety-two years, eleven months, and fourteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Fern; his brothers: Herman; Joseph; Msgr. Michael; Sylvan; and Raymond; his sister Bernice Schwarte; and his sister-in-law Peggy Schwarte.

     He is survived by his sisters Marie and her husband Joe Sullivan of Panama, Iowa; Caroline Esser of Logan, Iowa and Margaret and her husband Jerry Eipperle of Omaha, Nebraska; his brother Martin Schwarte of Harlan, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, February 14, 2009, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Rev. John Dorton celebrated the 10:30 AM service. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia with Mike Rosso; Wayne Schwarte; Joe Esser; Jim Schwarte; Jerry Eipperle, Jr.; and Mike Sullivan serving as casket bearers.

Arlene Schwery -  Age 75

   Arlene Alma Schwery, daughter of Michael and Annabel (Weihs) Schechinger, was born on August 10, 1931 in Westphalia, Iowa. Arlene was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. She attended grade school and graduated from high school at St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia.

   Arlene was one of nine children and grew up outside of Westphalia. Because of her father’s death when she was twelve, Arlene helped manage the farming responsibilities.

   On September 14, 1950, she was united in marriage to Elmer John Schwery at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Six children were born to this union: Charlene, Lynn, Tim, Cheryl, Kelly, and Christi.

From the mid 1960's to 1970's, Arlene managed the hardware store in Westphalia. During this time she began selling carpet. She then began selling carpet from her home until 2002 when she retired. Arlene also enjoyed playing cards, sewing, embroidery, gardening, visiting her children and grandchildren, making chocolate chip cookies, and especially planting flowers. She made five formals for her granddaughter’s weddings. Arlene was an active member of the Rosary Society and a life-long member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Governor’s advisory committee.

    Arlene died on May 26, 2007, at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-five years, nine months, and sixteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Charlene Schmidt; three brothers: Elmer, Jim, and Jerry; and one sister, Alice Schomers.

     She is survived by her husband, Elmer Schwery of Westphalia, Iowa; her children: Lynn and his wife Ardie Schwery of Ames, Iowa, Tim and his wife Cheryl Schwery of Underwood, Iowa, Cheryl Ronfeldt of Neola, Iowa, Kelly and his wife Sandi Schwery of Westphalia, Iowa, and Christi and her husband Chuck Leinen of Omaha, Nebraska; seventeen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her brother and sisters: Agnes Wehr of Westphalia; Mike Schechinger and his wife Mary of Westphalia; Jane Ragsdale of Hiram, Georgia and Joyce and her husband Stan Ulmer of Harlan, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.

   A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa, at 10:30 AM with Rev. John Dorton officiating. Interment was in St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa with Jeff Schmidt, Tom Schechinger, Dan Schwery, Galen Pauley, Ken Schechinger, and Dave Schomers serving as casket bearers.

Elmer J. Schwery - Age 79

     Elmer John Schwery was born on May 30, 1929 in Westphalia, Iowa, to Leo and Priscilla (Musich) Schwery. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. He attended St. Boniface Catholic School. He grew up on a farm and like many, he learned numerous trades. Aside from farming and raising livestock, he was a butcher, trucker, beekeeper, auctioneer, and electrician.

     Elmer was united in marriage to Arlene Schechinger on September 14, 1950, at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Six children were born to this union: Charlene, Lynn, Tim, Cheryl, Kelly, and Christi. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed playing, coaching, and watching baseball, gardening, fishing, dancing, hunting, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also had a special love of country music where he played with bands such as Sons of the South, The Country Four, Country Friends, and others. In addition to his love of country music, he also loved telling stories and giving hugs.

     After retiring, he continued helping Arlene with the carpet business and doing motor repair.

     Elmer died on Friday, April 24, 2009, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-nine years, ten months, and twenty-five days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Arlene, and his daughter Charlene.

     He is survived by his children: Lynn Schwery and his wife Ardie of Boone, Iowa, Tim Schwery and his wife Cheryl of Underwood, Iowa, Cheryl Ronfeldt and her friend Kevin Torneten of Neola, Iowa, Kelly Schwery and his wife Sandi of Westphalia, Iowa, and Christi and her husband Chuck Leinen of Omaha, NE; seventeen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters Alda Goetz of Denison, Iowa, and Arlene and her husband Mike Pauley of Portsmouth, Iowa; his brother Harold Schwery and his wife Alice of Westphalia; other family members and friends.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrated and Rev. John Dorton concelebrated the 11:00 AM service. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa, with Duane Schwery, Ronnie Schechinger, Galen Pauley, Tony Goetz, Tom Schechinger, and Ed Wehr serving as casket bearers.

Orlene A. Scott - Age 90

     Orlene Alvera Scott, the daughter of Rudolph and Elfrieda Jacobsen Hamdorf was born on February 13, 1918 on a farm southwest of Corley. She grew up on the farm where she was born and attended country school Fairview #4 through the eighth grade.

     Orlene was united in marriage to Howard Scott on February 19, 1941 at the First Lutheran Church in Avoca. To this union three children were born: Melvin, Carol and Robert. They farmed their entire married life and retired in 1979. She was a member of the neighborhood Sunshine Seekers Club and Trinity Lutheran Church. She was an excellent cook and was known for her walnut cakes, chocolate chip pie, her fried chicken and, a family favorite, was her homemade bread. She helped Howard on the farm with their livestock and was a hard worker. Orlene was known as a loving but firm mother and grandmother.

     Orlene died at the Elm Crest Care Center in Harlan, Iowa having attained the age of ninety years, eight months and twenty four days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Howard; son, Melvin and daughter Carol, and brothers Orville "Bud" Hamdorf and Lorraine "Skeet" Hamdorf and a granddaughter Michele.

     Survivors include her son Robert Scott and his wife Laraine of Avoca, Iowa; son-in-law, Delman Piittmann and his wife Norma of Albany, Illinois; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Scott of Bettendorf, Iowa; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; sisters: Alta Hansen of Walnut, Iowa and Wilma Throener of West Point, Nebraska; brother Delnar Hamdorf of Morrison, Colorado; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral services were held on Monday, November 10, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa with burial at Graceland Cemetery in Avoca. Pastor Dennis Reich officiated at the service with Wayne Paulsen doing the Eulogy. Those serving as casket bearers were Jeff Scott, Tracy Scott, Steve Harwood, Carson Marlay, Mike Scott and Lance Scott.
