Edna
C. Sampson - Age 92 Edna Christine Sampson, the daughter of William and Marie Noelek Thies, was born on October 13, 1915 on her parents farm outside of Denison, Iowa. She was baptized on November 7, 1915 and confirmed on January 28, 1935 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. She attended country school near Denison and worked on her parents farm helping her dad with the chores and field work. On her 20th birthday, Edna was united in marriage to LeRoy Sampson on October 13, 1935 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They farmed in the Denison and Jefferson areas until 1952 when they moved to a farm south of Walnut, Iowa. They were the parents of eleven children. In 1956 they moved to a home in Walnut where Edna was active in being a Brownie leader for her girls when they were growing up. She was a longtime member of the Walnut Legion Auxiliary and also served as their Chaplain. She was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Walnut where she remained very active. Edna had a strong faith and always a smile on her face. She was always thinking of others and would bake a loaf of bread for any occasion and she made a quilt for many babies born. She was a "grandma" to whomever walked in her front door. Edna moved to Avoca in 2004 to live in the Senior Apartment Complex. She lived there until November 30,2007. Edna died on December 4, 2007 at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa having attained the age of ninety-two years, one month and twenty-one days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband LeRoy who died in March 1985, her son Robert who died in April of 1969; one grandson; one great grandchild; son-in-law Thomas Willie; sisters: Emma Vetter and Ella Thies and brother Walt Thies. Survivors include her children: David and his wife Carol of Hancock; John and his wife Kay of Walnut; Arnie and his wife Carol of Avoca; Mary Willie of Folsom, Louisiana; James of Walnut; Wayne and his wife Darlene of Neola; Susan Libby of Walnut; Walter and his wife Barb of Walnut; Martha and her husband Randy Hargens of Walnut and Joseph and his wife Margaret of Elliott; twenty nine grandchildren; forty-five great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; two sisters: Bertha Neuman and Anna Lackmann, both of Denison, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Funeral Services were held on Friday, December 7, 2007 at 1:00 PM at the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Walnut, Iowa with Merlene Ostebee as the officiant. Serving as casket bearers wee Ryan Hargens, Sean Sampson, Michael Sampson, Desmond Armentrout, Johnny Sampson, Rob Sampson, Jason Sampson and Kevin Sampson. Interment was at the Layton Township Cemetery, Walnut, Iowa.
Gladys M. Sams - Age 89 Gladys Marie Sams, the daughter of Clarence and Nora Smith Cunningham, was born on March 16, 1916 on a farm east of Shelby, Iowa. She attended school in Shelby through the ninth grade. On November 25, 1942, Gladys was united in marriage to Alvin Sams at the United Methodist parsonage in Maryville, Missouri. After their marriage, they made their home south of Walnut until 1948 when they purchased a farm in Avoca, Iowa. They were the parents of two sons, Gary Dean and Allan Lee, two daughters, Jo Ann and Donna Marie. In 1971, Alvin died and Gladys moved into Avoca, Iowa. In 2002, she became a resident of the Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Gladys enjoyed being a farm wife and lived a simple life. She loved to play cards, such as Michigan Rummy and 500, and was a member of various card clubs. Her family was very important to her and she would always celebrate their birthdays. Gladys was an excellent cook and will be remembered for her cherry pies and popcorn balls on Christmas. She also enjoyed embroidering and made many tea towels and pillow cases. Gladys died on Monday, August 22, 2005, at the Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Avoca, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, five months and six days. In addition to her parents, and her husband, Alvin, Gladys was preceded in death by her daughter, Jo Ann, three sisters: Ethel Delph, Vera Krohn and Pearl Nelsen; three brothers-in-law: Ray Delph, Emil Krohn and Harvey Nelsen. Survivors include her children: Gary Sams of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Michelle Schmit of Mason City, Iowa; Allan Sams and his wife, Nan of Avoca, Iowa; sons, Brian and his wife, Trisha of Woodward, Iowa and Mark of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and daughter, Jennifer and her fiancé Kevin Gee of Avoca, Iowa; One daughter, Donna and her husband Gail Larsen of Emerson, Iowa; daughters, Tina of Omaha, Nebraska and Trisha and her husband, Troy Nichols of Council Bluffs, Iowa; three great grandchildren: Tyler B. Vankeuren, Ellie M. Schmit and George W. Schmit; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Dorothy Janene Sanborn, the daughter of Laverne E. and Izroa Larsen Durham Kline, was born on May 22, 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was raised on a chicken farm and was a "Tom Boy." Dottie always wanted to be a cow girl and live on a ranch. She attended school at Van Nays High School and then later attended St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Dorothy was united in marriage to Larry Edgington in 1958 in Van Nuys, California and to this union two daughters were born: Chris-Ellen and Tauni. She was later married to Alfred Sanborn at a chapel in the hills in California. To this union, one son was born, Allen. She was employed as a stock broker clerk during her residency in California. In 1987, Dottie moved to Elk Horn, Iowa to be close to her family. In 1989, she retired and began to work part-time at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, in the dietary department. Dottie was a simple person who loved everybody she met. She would do anything to make a person smile. Dottie had a simple elegance about her and opened her home as well as her heart to many. Family was very important to her and she welcomed all she met into her life. Dorothy died on Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, having attained the age of sixty-eight years, one month and six days. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her brother, Val Kline. Survivors include her children, Chris-Ellen Nash of Omaha, Nebraska; Tauni Grass of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania; and Allen Sanborn; her mother, Izroa Durham of Elk Horn, Iowa; three grandchildren: Dustin, Stephanie, and Cailey; two great-grandchildren: Dakota and Samantha; her brother, Verne Kline and his wife, Kathy of Pasadena, California; sister-in-law, Carole Kline; other relatives and many friends. Funeral Services were held on Friday, July 1, 2005 at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church in Elk Horn, Iowa with Pastor Gavin King as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Tony Cue, Verne Kline, Stephanie Nash, Elizabeth Page and Roger Page. Interment was held in the Elk Horn Baptist Cemetery in Elk Horn, Iowa.
Jennifer A. Sandbothe - Age 15 Jennifer Ann Sandbothe, daughter of Randy Sanbothe and Sherry (Nielsen) Sandbothe, was born on August 5, 1989 in Atlantic, Iowa. She was baptized at St. Mary’s Church in Avoca, Iowa and received her first communion and was confirmed at St. Patrick’s Church in Walnut, Iowa. She attended school in Walnut where she was currently a member of the class of 2007. While in school, Jennifer was active in 4-H and many school activities. She treasured every second she spent with her family and friends especially while camping. Jennifer and her friends always found adventures outdoors and at the camp grounds. She will always be remembered for her wonderful smile and her infectious spirit. Jennifer died as the result of a car accident on January 27, 2005, in Walnut, Iowa having attained the age of fifteen years, five months and twenty-two days. She is survived by her mother, Sherry Sandbothe and her father, Randy and his wife Denise Sandbothe both of Walnut, Iowa; her brother, Eric Sandbothe of Avoca, Iowa; her maternal grandparents, Kenny and Judy Nielsen of Walnut; her paternal grandparents, Vernon and Mary Sandbothe of Atlantic, Iowa; her maternal great grandmother, Helen Nielsen of Harlan, aunts, uncles, cousins other relatives and many friends.

N. Schaaf - Age 89 Noyon Nadine Schaaf, daughter of James and Ida R. (Loy) Chandler was born on August 29, 1918 on the Loy Family farm about two miles south of Avoca while her dad was serving in the Army during World War I. After her father was discharged from the Army, her family moved to the Chandler farm two miles northeast of Hancock. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from the Hancock High School where she was very active in school activities such as basketball, class plays and glee club. She was a baptized member of the Hancock Methodist Church and was active in the young peoples organizations. As a young girl, she was very active in 4-H where she won many awards on both the county and state levels. Noyon attended Simpson College for two years where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Following college, she was employed as a secretary at the Brandes Insurance Agency in Avoca. On August 29, 1943, she was united in marriage to Mervin Schaaf. Two children were born to this union: Douglas and Janelle. After their wedding, Mervin and Noyon lived on the Schaaf family farm where they ran a hog operation until they retired in 1980. In 1994, they moved into Avoca. Noyon was a faithful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church being very active in the women’s organizations and also served as past president. For a number of years, she was a 4-H leader and was an honorary member of the East Pottawattamie County 4-H Committee. She was also a member and past matron of the Avoca Chapter of Eastern Star; was Mother Advisor of the Avoca Chapter of Rainbow for Girls; served on the Harlan Hospital Auxiliary Board and also a member of Avoca Garden Club. She was a woman of deep religious faith, who worked hard and always cared for others. She was a conservative lady but was always very generous with her family. Noyon died on Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Elm Crest Retirement Community, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, three months and seventeen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Janelle Gilliland; two brothers: Dean and Norman Chandler, and her sister, Elaine Anderson. She is survived by her husband Mervin of Harlan, Iowa; her son Doug Schaaf and his wife Judy of Seattle, Washington; son-in-law John Gilliland of Harlan, Iowa; sister Wanda Chandler of Omaha, Nebraska; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Funeral Services were held on Thursday, December 19, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Brent Soll, Nicholas Soll, Adam Caraher, John Gilliland, Dean Kock and Jerry Gilliland. Burial was held in the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.
Eugene Herman Schaben, the son of William and Josephine L. Block Schaben, was born on May 9, 1936 on a farm near Earling, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. He attended school at St. Paul’s Catholic School in Defiance and graduated with the class of 1955. After high school, Gene enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in Omaha, Nebraska on September 20, 1956 and was released from active duty with an Honorable Discharge on September 19, 1958. After his time in the service, Gene returned to the Defiance area were he worked as a carpenter for one year. Eugene was united in marriage to Janice Miller on September 5, 1960 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. Gene and Janice were engaged in farming in the Defiance area. They are the parents of three children: Ellen, Keith and Elaine. They retired from farming in 2003. Gene enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing cards, hunting and fishing and going to the casino. Eugene was also an avid Hawkeye fan, following all of their sporting events. Eugene was a member of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. Eugene died suddenly on Sunday, November 28, 2004 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. In addition to his parents, Gene is preceded in death by his brothers, Marvin and Jack and a sister, Joan. He is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Janice, his children: Ellen and her husband, Todd Sherrell of Omaha, Nebraska, Keith Schaben of Earling, Iowa, and Elaine and her husband, Rusty German of Altoona, Iowa; five grandchildren: Sara and Beth Sherrell, both of Omaha, Nebraska, Tyler and Sam German, both of Altoona, Iowa and Wyatt Schaben of Earling, Iowa; brothers and sisters: Charles Schaben and his wife, Delores and Betty and her husband, LeRoy Grote, all of Earling, Iowa, Raymond Schaben and his wife, Frances of Westphalia, Iowa, Delores and her husband, Jack Staley of Carroll, Iowa, Janice and her husband, Cletus Schmitz, Gladys and her husband, Dan Rau, all of Harlan, Iowa, Duane Schaben and his wife, Joan of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Ron Schaben and his wife, Marge of Defiance, Iowa; mother-in-law, Dorothy Miller of Denison, Iowa; brother-in-law Glen Miller also of Denison, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Mildred Goeser of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Marlene Klingenborg of Cedar Falls, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, December 1, 2004, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa, at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Michael Berner as the celebrant. Military rites were conducted by the United States Marine Corp, Engineer Maintenance Company, 4th Maintenance Battalion of Omaha, Nebraska, at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Defiance, Iowa, with Glen Miller, Rodney Schaben, Dean Schaben, Brian Schaben, Rusty German, Myron Schaben, Todd Sherrell and Roger Schaben serving as casket bearers and Dan Rau, Raymond Schaben, Jack Staley, Leroy Grote, Charles Schaben, Cletus Schmitz, Duane Schaben and Ron Schaben serving as honorary casket bearers.
Warren A. "Tobe"
Schaben - Age 69 Warren "Tobe" Anthony Schaben, was born on July 1, 1936, to Clarence and Catherine Block Schaben at Defiance, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. Tobe attended school at St. Paul’s Catholic School in Defiance, Iowa, and was a member of the graduating class of 1954. Upon graduation, Tobe worked at the Defiance Lumberyard for 11 years. He then was employed at Farmland for eight years. Tobe purchased a bar and restaurant on Main Street in Defiance and then sold it. Then he bought the gas station and bar on the corner in Defiance. Tobe remodeled and converted it to a bar named, "Tobe’s Place ." He operated the bar for twenty-seven years. Tobe loved Defiance, the people and dedicated his life to the town of Defiance. On December 14, 1985, Tobe was united in marriage to Louann Smith at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. After their marriage, they continued to make their home in Defiance, Iowa. Tobe loved baseball and played in high school as well as Town Team. He also enjoyed NASCAR racing, especially Jeff Gordon and stock car races in Harlan. Tobe liked to play the lottery and liked to dance Polkas and country western music. Tobe died on Sunday, December 18, 2005, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age sixty-nine years, five months and seventeen days. In addition to his parents, Tobe was preceded in death by his brothers Dennis and Adolph. Survivors include his wife, Louann of Defiance, Iowa; his sisters and brothers: Mary and her husband, Richard Muell of Missouri Valley, Iowa; Alice McCullough of Carroll, Iowa; Donald Schaben and his wife, Judy of Defiance, Iowa; Marlene and her husband, Lyle Christensen of Audubon, Iowa; Allen Schaben and his wife, Joanne of Harlan, Iowa; his step-children: Cal Bradley and his wife, Elaine of Santa Maria, California; Diana and her husband, Russell Rauterkus of Harlan, Iowa; David Bradley and his wife, Tyla of Irwin, Iowa; eight step-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, December 22, 2005, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa, at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Michael Berner as celebrant. Interment was in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Defiance, Iowa, with Tom Gross, Clem Henkelman, Donald Dotzler, Lou Heller, Charlie Goetzinger, Dean Bissen, and George Sonderman serving as Honorary Casket Bearers. Serving as Casket Bearers were Tom Heller, Alan Jensen, Wes Walker, Ronald Arkfeld, Ron Schaben, and John Fromm.
Alphonse "Al" Bernard Schechinger, the son of Joseph and Christina (Schomer) Schechinger, was born September 5, 1918 on a farm located north of Harlan. In 1920, his family moved to a farm north of Defiance, Iowa. Al graduated from St. Paul’s Catholic School in Defiance in 1937. He enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. He was employed at the United States Post Office and worked as a farm hand prior to enlisting in the United States Navy on August 2, 1942. Al was stationed at Sampson Naval Training Center near Geneva, New York. On June 10, 1944, Al married Mildred Von Tersch in Defiance, Iowa. Six children were born to this union: Robert, Jolene, David, Jim, Mark and Lee. After their marriage they lived in Canandaigua, New York, until he transferred overseas to the Phillippines in January of 1945. After the war, they operated the Highway Tavern in Defiance, Iowa. In 1950, Al and Mildred began to farm near Panama, Iowa. In 1966, Al and Mildred moved to Logan, Iowa, where he managed the County ASCS Office. In 1972 they moved to Harlan, Iowa, where he managed G&R Feed and Grain until he retired in 1982. They became very active in St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Al enjoyed fishing, especially in Canada, family reunions, and the trips they shared together. In 2003, Al and Mildred became residents of the Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Avoca, Iowa. Mildred died on July 14, 2004. Al died on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Avoca, having attained the age of eighty-five years, eleven months and twenty-seven days. Al was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mildred, and his half brothers and sisters: Martin, Elizabeth, Barbara, Johnny, Cecelia, Cunnie and Katherine, Ralph Grobmier, Leona Dotzler and Madeline Reidel. He is survived by his children: Robert and Norene Schechinger of Panama, Iowa; Jolene and Phil Koesters of Harlan, Iowa; David and Pamela Schechinger of Bloomfield, New Mexico; Jim and Mary Schechinger; Mark and Deborah Schechinger and Lee and Tammie Schechinger all of Harlan, Iowa; twenty-four grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, September 4, 2004, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Robert Hoefler officiating and Rev. John Frost and Rev. Fred Reischl concelebrating. Interment was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, with her grandchildren, Teresa Mardesen, Joni Leinen, Anne Schoenauer, Gina Schechinger, Renee Schechinger, Jill Schechinger, Becky Steinke, Jenne Gregor, Dianne Heath, Heather Florell, Gaylen Petsche, Tammie Christianson, Nathan Finken, Danielle Finken, and Brittni Finken serving as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were her grandchildren, Micah Finken, Jeffrey Schechinger, Joey Koesters, Eric Schechinger, David Koesters, Paul Schechinger, Michael Schechinger, Steve Schechinger and Matthew Schechinger.
Donald G. Schechinger - Age 46 Donald Gerard Schechinger, son of Elmer and Margaret (Stessman) Schechinger was born on December 7, 1960 in Harlan, Iowa. He was one of fifteen children and had a twin brother, Ron. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Don attended school in Harlan, Iowa, and graduated from Harlan Community High School in 1980. He was united in marriage to Debra Dea on April 9, 1988. Four children were born to this union: Molly, Justin, Elizabeth, and Annabel. After their marriage, they made their home near Harlan. Throughout high school, Don worked for his father at Schechinger Seed Co. doing farming; conditioning soybeans and everything else that needed to be done. He continued to work there until the present time. When Don was not busy with work, he enjoyed helping Debra with all the housework including the laundry and dishes. Don also helped Debra with the maintenance of the garden they started together. Don was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia for many years and later became a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan where he spent many weekends ushering. In 1980, Don joined the Westphalia Volunteer Fire Department and continued to be a member even after becoming a member of the Harlan Fire Department. Don died on Thursday, November 8, 2007, at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, having attained the age of forty-six years, eleven months, and one day. He is preceded in death by his father.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, November 12, 2007, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Celebrant of the 11:00 AM mass was Rev. Bob Hoefler. Serving as casket bearers were Ben Bieker, Brad Schechinger, Charles Grabill, Noah Dea, Jeremy Schechinger, and Shane Schechinger. Honor Guard was the Westphalia Volunteer Fire Department and the Harlan Fire Department with interment at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan , Iowa.
Dorothy Helen Schechinger - Age 97 Dorothy Helen Schechinger was born in Earling, Iowa, on February 13, 1909, to Joseph and Mayme (Glawinski) Stephany. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. She grew up in Earling and attended the St. Joseph Catholic School in Earling. She was united in marriage to Joseph J. Schechinger on November 20, 1927, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Four children were born to this union: Gladys, Mildred, Bill, and Sandra. Dorothy was a mother and a homemaker throughout her life. She canned vegetables from her garden, baked a lot of homemade bread, cooked for the hired hands and did their laundry. Dorothy and Joe made their home and raised their children on the farm until 1960 when they retired and built a house on Baldwin Street in Harlan. Even after renting out the farm, Dorothy continued to keep track of all business matters relating to the farm. Dorothy’s hobbies included making ceramics, gardening and flowers, knitting and crocheting and playing cards. She also enjoyed her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, and even four great-great-grandchildren. After the death of her husband, she liked to travel when she could. Dorothy remained in the home that she and her husband built until 2001, when she became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan. Dorothy died on Friday, January 19, 2007, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-seven years, eleven months, and six days. Her beloved husband Joe preceded her in death in 1966, as well as her son-in-law, Gary. Dorothy is survived by her children: Gladys and husband Leroy Anastasi of Harlan, Iowa, Mildred and husband Charles Behrendt of Harlan, Bill and wife Kay Schechinger of Yantis, Texas, and Sandra and her deceased husband Gary Stamp of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; her brother Paul and wife Phyllis Stephany of Harlan, thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, January 22, 2007, with Rev. Bob Hoefler officiating the 11:00 AM service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Serving as casket bearers were Jeff Stamp, Joe Schechinger, Pat Behrendt, Vicki Fagan, Mary Jo Sondag, Mike Behrendt, Barbara Evans, and Brian Stamp.
Mildred C. Schechinger - Age 81 Mildred Catherine Schechinger, the daughter of Francis and Bertha Henrietta (Blum) Von Tersch, was born on March 25, 1923, in Defiance, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. Mildred graduated from St. Paul’s Catholic School in Defiance, Iowa, and continued on at Mount Saint Scholastica College in Atchinson, Kansas. Mildred then began teaching rural school near Defiance. On June 10, 1944, Mildred was united in marriage to Alphonse Schechinger at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. After their marriage, they lived in New York while Al was in the Navy. Mildred and Al moved back to Iowa in 1950 and started farming near Panama. In 1952, Mildred suffered a series of strokes, which she overcame during her lifetime. Six children were born to this union: Robert, Jolene, David, Jim, Mark and Lee. Mildred enjoyed being a homemaker and would spend time in her garden. In 1966, Mildred and Al moved to Logan, where she taught CCD. In 1972, they moved to Harlan. They became very active members of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. She was instrumental in the refunding program which raised over two hundred thousand dollars to furnish new pews and windows for the church. She took pride in the church and the refunding program was very important to her. Mildred was an avid reader, especially when it came to current events. Mildred enjoyed discussing the current affairs of the world. She would often take the other side so she could debate a topic more thoroughly. Mildred also liked to discuss politics. In 2003, Mildred and Al became residents of the Avoca Assisted Living Center in Avoca. On June 10, 2004, Mildred and Al celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Mildred died on Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-one years, three months and twenty days. In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Robert Von Tersch, Joyce Will, Eugene Von Tersch, Marie Von Tersch, Darlene Rau, Bonnie Maguire, and Maxine Sievertsen. Survivors include her husband, Al Schechinger of Avoca, Iowa; her children, Robert Schechinger and his wife Norene of Panama, Iowa; Jolene and her husband, Phil Koesters of Harlan, Iowa; David Schechinger and his wife, Pamela of Bloomfield, New Mexico; Jim Schechinger and his wife, Mary of Harlan, Iowa; Mark Schechinger and his wife, Deborah of Harlan, Iowa; Lee Schechinger and his wife, Tammie of Harlan, Iowa; twenty-four grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; her brother and sisters, Dean Von Tersch of Palmer, Iowa; Sister Elizabeth Von Tersch of San Diego, California; Carol Von Tersch of Lawrence, Kansas; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Von Tersch of Yardly, Pennsylvania; Verta Mae Von Tersch of Denison, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Leo Rau of Omaha, Nebraska; James Maguire of Humphrey, Nebraska; other relatives and a great many friends. Interment was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, with her grandchildren, Teresa Mardesen, Joni Leinen, Anne Schoenauer, Gina Schechinger, Renee Schechinger, Jill Schechinger, Becky Steinke, Jenne Gregor, Dianne Heath, Heather Florell, Gaylen Petsche, Tammie Christianson, Nathan Finken, Danielle Finken, and Brittni Finken serving as honorary casket bearers. Ellen Irene "Nell"
Schmidt - Age 86 Ellen Irene "Nell" Schmidt, daughter of Frank August and Margaret "Maggie" (Mitchell) Skoch, was born at home, near Baileyville, Kansas, on November 11, 1919. Nell was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, Kansas. Nell attended country school just down the road from their family farm on ground that her father donated for the school. She later worked as a hired girl for her cousin, Pete Rettelle, and always helped out on her parents’ farm. Nell was united in marriage to Laurence Louis Schmidt on April 27, 1938, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, Kansas, the same church Laurence’s parents were married in. Four children were born into this union: Eugene, Janiece, Don and Larry. After their marriage, Laurence and Nell moved to the farm that Laurence had been farming the year before they were married. They remained here until moving to a farm south of Sabetha, Kansas for a few years and then moved to a farm near Sabetha Lake, west of Sabetha. This was their home until January of 1958, when the family moved to Harlan, Iowa, where Laurence was a district manager for Archer Oil. Nell sold Avon for nearly forty years. She always had a big garden and a tremendous amount of flowers. Nell loved birds, especially cardinals that she would catch and keep as pets when she young. Nell was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. In July of 2002, Nell and Laurence relocated to the Dunlap Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunlap, Iowa. Laurence died on September 20, 2003, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunlap. Nell continued to make her home in Dunlap until her death on August 28, 2006, having attained the age of eighty-six years, nine months and seventeen days. In addition to her parents and husband, Nell was preceded in death by her brother Francis Skoch and four sisters, Mary Stallbaumer, Kate Stallbaumer, Teresa Reicherter and Rose Brady Dodd, and her grandson Steven Schmidt in 1965. Nell is survived by her children Eugene Schmidt and his wife Betty of Harlan, Iowa; Janiece and her husband Tom Rau of Shelby, Iowa; Don Schmidt and his wife Katy of Gillette, Wyoming; Larry Schmidt and his wife Marilyn of Columbia Heights, Minnesota; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-four great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, August 31,2006 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Robert Hoefler as the celebrant. Linda Ann Schiltz - Age 56 Linda Ann Schiltz, daughter of Sylvin and Elvira (Finken) Miller, was born on November 24, 1950, near Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling and attended grade school at St. Joseph’s Catholic School. She later attended and graduated from high school in Harlan. After graduation, Linda attended nurses training and worked for a short time as a nurse. On August 8, 1970, Linda was united in marriage to R Linda died at home outside of Earling surrounded by those she loved most on April 15, 2007, having attained the age of fifty-six years, four months and twenty-two days. She was proceeded in death by her father, Sylvin. Marvin K. Schlicht - Age 89 Marvin Kenneth Schlicht was born on June 28, 1915 on the family farm south of Walnut, Iowa. He was the son of Jerry and Anna Schroeder Schlicht and was one of eight children in the family. He attended grade school in a one room country school until he was age nine and then attended the Walnut, Iowa public school. Marvin was united in marriage to Dorothea Marie Timm on September 30, 1935 in Omaha, Nebraska. They started farming while living on the flat in Avoca, Iowa, and later moved to Hamburg, Iowa. In 1949 they returned to the Schlicht farm near Walnut which was designated as a Century Farm in 1992. They lived there until Dorothea passed away in 2001, and until Marvin went to live at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa in 2003. Marvin’s wish was to die at the family farm and he returned there the day before his death. In addition to farming, Marvin was a calf roper, horse shoer, horse trainer, and professional square dance caller. He was a member and president of the Raw Hider Horse Club and spent many years trail riding with the River City Roundup Horse Club. He loved to sing and dance and attend rodeos. Marvin was a loving father who taught his children discipline, hard work and to be thrifty. Marvin died on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at his farm near Walnut, Iowa, surrounded by family. He had attained the age of eighty nine years, nine months and fourteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothea in 2001, six sisters and brothers: Alma Peterson, Lizzie Troll, Johnny Schlicht, Harry Schlicht, Maggie Feldman and Clarence Schlicht. "Sally" Schmitz - Age 93 Marcella "Sally" Annette Schmitz was born on April 13, 1915, in Panama, Iowa, to Hubert and Anna (Mickels) Pauley. She was baptized at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa, and confirmed at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. She attended country school in Panama. On June 18, 1935, Sally was united in marriage to Nicholas Schmitz at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama. Eleven children were born to this union. After their marriage, the couple farmed southeast of Panama. Two years later, they moved to farm south of Panama. In July of 1940, their crops were hailed out and they were only able to raise carrots. They moved to a farm near Westphalia in 1945 and in 1950, purchased the farm from Nick’s father. Sally did custom decorating, papering, and painting for the people in the area. She worked at the Maidrite Café for several years. Later, she became a nurses aide at Myrtue Memorial Hospital. She then did in-home caregiving after retiring as a nurses aide. She moved off the farm in 1994 and later into Westridge Apartments in Harlan. She became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Home in 2008. Sally died on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, having attained the age of ninety-three years, one month, and fourteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one grandchild, and three great-grandchildren. Mervin Rudolph Schnack - Age 87 Mervin Rudoph Schnack, son of Ernest Gustav and Bertha Ann (Kay) Schnack, was born on December 22, 1919, near Logan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed At Shelby Lutheran Church. He attended school at Tennant, Iowa and graduated with the class of 1937. On June 17, 1945, Mervin was united in marriage to Mildred Doonan at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. After their marriage, they farmed in Shelby County throughout the years. He was a past member of the Tennant School Board. His family and farm were his life. Hearing his children play and laugh made his day when they were young. Mervin had a great sense of humor and always went out of his way to say something cute to make you laugh. Mervin enjoyed and took great pride in his farm, home, and cars. He kept them spotless at all times. Through the years, Mervin and Mildred followed their children’s school and sporting events. They were also active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church where they were longtime members. Mervin retired from farming in 1993 and moved to Harlan. While in Harlan, he was active with the Senior Citizen’s Center as well as with the Meals on Wheels program. Mildred died on November 18, 1994, and after her death Mervin remained at home in Harlan. He later moved to the Elm Crest Assisted Living Apartments and this has been his home since. He died at his apartment in Harlan on February 8, 2007, having attained the age of eighty-seven years, one month and seventeen days. In addition to his parents and wife, Mervin was preceded in death by his brothers Arnold, Elmer and his sister, Theresa Davis. He is survived by his son Gary Schnack and his wife, Kate of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his daughter, Sheryl and her husband Kevin Humlicek of Lincoln, Nebraska; his grandsons, Brandon and Nathan Humlicek of Lincoln; his sister Wilma and her husband Edwin Olson and his brother Ernie Schnack and his wife RoseAnn both of Harlan; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Funeral Services were held on Monday, February 12, 2007, with Pastor Steve Chellew and Pastor Heather Ploen both presiding over the 10:30 AM ceremony at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. Honorary casket bearers were Bud Hansen, Keith "Max" Goodner, Russell Haas, Bill Shannon, Willard Olson, Harold Peters, David Gibson, Merle Lawyer, LeRoy Cooper, Jim Boardman, Junior Block, Jess Boardman, and Vern Renze. Serving as casket bearers were Allan Olson, Randy Schnack, Ernie Peters, Dale Klindt, Galen Schnack, Merle Larson, and Wayne Olson. Interment was at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
Richard Rudolph Schneckloth, the son of Carl H. “Charley” and Margaret (Schutt) Schneckloth, was born on July 9, 1917 in Benson, Minnesota. Their family moved to the Council Bluffs, Iowa area near Lake Manawa. He attended school at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs. After school, he moved to the Minden area and farmed with his parents and worked as a hired hand for neighboring farmers. He entered the United States Army on March 18, 1942, at Ft. Des Moines. While in the army he served his country in the Signal Corp repairing equipment during World War II in Naples, Rome, Greece and Africa. He was honorably discharged from Ft. Leavenworth in Kansas on October 12, 1945. On December 18, 1949, Richard was united in marriage to Emma Sick in Harlan, Iowa. After their marriage, they rented a farm outside of Harlan until 1956 when they moved to a farm near Neola. They were the parents of four children: Dennis, Diane, Charlene and Roger. Emma died March 15, 1963, and Richard continued to make his home on the farm near Neola. On November 25, 1966, Richard was united in marriage to Doris Felton in Neola, Iowa. They were the parents of four children: Terry, Ken, Tom and Mike. They made their home in Neola where he worked as a general contractor specializing in plumbing and carpentry. He continued working out of his home until his retirement in 1994. Doris died October 17, 2000, and he continued to make his home in Neola until November of 2006 when he moved to the Oakland Manor. He died on January 6, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, five months and twenty-eight days. In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by his daughter Diane and his son Terry. He is survived by his children: Dennis Schneckloth and his wife Barb of Oakland, Iowa, Charlene Lancaster, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Roger Schneckloth and his wife Beth of Neola, Iowa, Ken Schneckloth of Neola, Tom Schneckloth and his wife Kelli of Minden, Iowa, Mike Schneckloth of Neola; his son-in-law, Rick Lancaster, of Colorado Springs; eleven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; his sister, Evelyn Stortenbecker, Treynor, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends. Edith M. Schneider - Age 86
On August 6, 1941, Edith was united in marriage to Elmer Schneider at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Six children were born to this union: Karen, Debra, Daryl, Douglas, Diane and Dean. After their marriage, the couple farmed for over forty years east of Westphalia, Iowa. In 1981, the couple retired but continued to live on the farm. Elmer died on December 28, 1984. After Elmer’s death, Edith continued to reside on the family farm, until October 6, 2005.
Edith was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, and enjoyed gardening, bowling, golfing, and watching baseball. She also like doing word search puzzles, dancing, and watching old movies.
She died on Sunday, October 23, 2005, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-six years one month and thirty days. In addition to her parents and her husband, Elmer, Edith was preceded in death by two children: Karen and Douglas; her brothers and sisters, Theoletta, Sylvester "Tootie," Austin, Irene, Vera, Doris, Denny and Tony, Jr.

Bernice Buman Schomer - Age 92 Bernice Buman Schomer was born on June 14, 1914, in rural Tennant, Iowa, to John and Helen (Rosman) Buman. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth, Iowa. She attended grade school and graduated from high school in Tennant, Iowa. She went on to attend college at St. Mary’s, Notre Dame in Indiana, and Duschene in Omaha, Nebraska. After completing her education, she taught third and fourth grades in Tennant, Iowa, for six years, until her marriage. She was united in marriage to Joseph Schomer on June 22, 1943, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. There were six children born to this union: Joe Jr., Mary, Rose, Pat, Kathleen, and Stephan. She was a very loving mother and mentor to her children and was involved in her children’s activities. She was a 4-H leader for the Lincoln Bluebirds. She taught religious education at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, read to the residents at Elm Crest Retirement Center, and served on the Community Chest Board. Bernice loved to sew and made special cross-stitches for the Baptisms, First Communions and Marriages of her grandchildren. She loved flowers of all kinds and spent many hours in her gardens. Bernice was a particularly good cook and baker. Her sweet rolls and bread were sought after by her family and friends. Joe and Bernice lived on the family farm until 1999 when they moved into Harlan. Bernice died on Wednesday, February 7, 2007, having attained the age of ninety-two years, seven months, and twenty-four days. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helen Buman, and her siblings: Edwin Buman, Corrine Anastasi, Wanda Jurshack, and Kenneth Buman. Bernice is survived by her husband of sixty-four years, Joseph Schomer, her children: Joe Schomer, Jr. of Daytona Beach, Florida, Mary and her husband Myron Goodman of Salisbury, North Carolina, Rose and her husband Kenneth Nielsen of LaCanada, California, Pat and her husband Mike Laas of Bettendorf, Iowa, Kathleen Kohorst of Harlan, Iowa, and Stephan and his wife Tammy Schomer of Iowa City, Iowa, nineteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. Joseph Schomer
- Age 92 Joseph Schomer, son of Jacob and Mary (Petsche) Schomer, was born on February 6, 1916 outside of Westphalia, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa and graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School. On June 22, 1943, Joe was united in marriage to Bernice Buman at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Six children were born to this union: Joe, Jr.; Mary; Rose Anne; Patricia; Kathleen; and Stephan. Joe and Bernice lived in Harlan for a while before moving to a small farm east of Tennant. Joe started doing plumbing and electrical work as well as farming. Although he enjoyed his work very much, he enjoyed the people around the Harlan area even more. He also loved music and photography. Joe and Bernice moved to Harlan in the spring of 1998. After Bernice’s death on February 7, 2007, Joe moved to Elm Crest Retirement Center in Harlan. Joe was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Joe died on Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan having attained the age of ninety-two years, one month, and three days. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Bernice; and his son-in-law Bob Kohorst. Dexter Adolph Schroeder - Age 84 ![]() Dexter Adolph Schroeder, the son of Walter H. and Ella Dorthea Woltmann Schroeder, was born on November 14, 1921, at Hancock, Iowa. He attended school in Pottawattamie County and was a member of the graduating class of 1940. On October 28, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Crook, Nebraska. Dexter served his country during World War II in the Asiatic Theater, serving in India for twenty-nine months. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal. On February 6, 1946, Dexter was honorably discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. On November 25, 1949, Dexter was united in marriage to Jean Ione Maassen at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Judy, Nancy, Jane and David. After their marriage, the couple lived on a farm south of Audubon and then moved to a farm in Walnut, Iowa. In 1955, the couple moved to the Maassen Family Farm. Dexter served on the Shelby County A.S.C.S. for Lincoln Township, receiving ten years of service award. He was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post No. 941 and past commander. Dexter was an active member of the Congregational Church and served on many committees. He also drove truck for various people and construction companies. He enjoyed farming, family gatherings and fishing, which he did later in life. Dexter died on Monday, May 22, 2006, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-four years, six months and eight days. In addition to his parents, Dexter was preceded in death by his brother and sisters-in-law, Ivan Schroeder and his wife, Veta, and Janice Schroeder and sister, Dorthea Keller. Survivors include his wife, Jean of Harlan, Iowa; his children: Judy Schroeder of Omaha, Nebraska; Nancy and her husband, Tim Peterson of Fremont, Nebraska; Jane and her husband, Terry Burger of Las Vegas, Nevada; David Schroeder and his wife, Lisa of Woodbury, Minnesota; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers: Lloyd Schroeder of Rockaway Beach, Missouri; Howard Schroeder and his wife, Harriet of Inver Grove, Minnesota; brother-in-law: Arlie Keller of Atlantic, Iowa; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 25, 2006, at the Congregational United Church on Christ in Harlan, Iowa, at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Donna Ewert officiating. Military Rites were conducted in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, by the American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 and the Shelby County VFW Post No. 941. Serving as casket bearers were David Schroeder, Ed Keller, Brad Schroeder, Todd Schroeder, Tim Peterson, Dan Petersen, and Terry Burger.
Lt. Col. Albert C. Schue - Age 80 Albert Curtis Schue, the only child of Rev. Albert Clayton and Ollie M. Schue, was born on February 2, 1924 in Akron, Ohio. He attended elementary school in Tekonsha, Michigan, junior high in Miles, Iowa and graduated from Avoca High School with the class of 1942. In October of 1942, Albert joined the Army Air Corps Pilot Reserve program where he graduated from Pilot Training School in Seymour, Indiana on February 8, 1944. After graduation, Albert continued at the base as an instructor until late in 1944, when he went overseas for assignment with the 69th Troop Carrier Squadron and the 433rd Troop Carrier Group operating out of Nadzab, New Guinea. In the spring of 1945, he secured assignment with the Headquarters Squadron of the Far East Air Force and served as Staff Pilot to Headquarters 6th Army, San Fernando, PI. As hostilities ended, that unit moved to Kyoto, Japan, including Hiroshima and Nagisaki, for the American Bomb Evaluation team. Upon the deactivation of the 6th Army, he continued this duty with Yokohoma based Headquarters, 8th Army. Upon his return to the States in June of 1946, he accepted a commission as First Lieutenant in the Air Force Active Reserve. He completed his military service receiving his honorable discharge in 1986 having retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. On August 5, 1946, Albert was united in marriage to Corinne Lois Woltman. They were the parents of two sons; Robert and Richard. After his service during World War II, Albert attended Michigan State College where he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1950. He held electrical engineering design positions in Michigan and New York before joining the Armco Steel Corporation as a Sales Engineer in southwestern Indiana in 1957. He retired from Armco in February 1986. Shortly thereafter, Albert moved to the Avoca area where he and his wife, Corinne, have since resided. Albert died on April 19, 2004 at the Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Avoca Iowa, having attained the age of eighty years, two months and seventeen days. He was preceded in death by his parents. Albert is survived by his wife, Corinne Schue of Avoca, Iowa; his sons: Robert Lowell Schue of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Richard Ernest Schue and his wife Margaret of Carmel, Indiana; four grandchildren: Kristin, Allison, David and Eric Schue; two nieces: Nancy and her husband John Faselt and Lois Woltman; his nephew Justin Woltman and his wife Becky; other relatives and many friends. Jeffery O. Schueman - Age 49 Jeffery Otto Schueman, the son of James O. and Phyllis Myers Schueman, was born on March 13, 1958 in Harlan, Iowa, and was one of three children in the family. He attended school in Avoca and graduated with the Class of 1976. During high school he worked for Harry Wendt doing painting. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Jeff was united in marriage to Dianne Emken on July 16, 1988 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. Jeff was employed at his fathers Trucking Company; J & P Trucking and later Double 'S'; where he worked in the shop and also drove truck. He then went to work for Steve Emken Trucking as a mechanic. Jeff enjoyed bowling, sports, which included his love for the Cubs, the Chicago Bears and biking. He also loved spending time with his pets. Jeff died on Sunday, August 26, 2007 at his home in Avoca having attained the age of forty-nine years, five months and thirteen days. He was preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis. Survivors include his wife, Dianne; his father James O. Schueman; his brother James Schueman and his wife, Janee', all of Avoca, Iowa; his sister, Linda and her husband, Juan Cruz, of Greeley, Colorado; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy and Mr. Wayne Paulsen as the Eulogist. Serving as Honorary Casket Bearers were Steve Emken, Chris Cruz, Keith Schueman, Jessica Poppe, Matt Schueman and Janeen Schueman. Casket Bearers were Wayne Allen, Steve Pankonen, Dean Schueman, Dave Schueman, Ron Rehfeldt, Randy Mogensen, Jeff Paulsen and Brad Thornton. Interment was held in Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.
Phyllis Jane Schueman - Age 82 Phyllis Jane Myers Schueman was born on October 9, 1924 in Shelby County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Charley and Christina Ronnfeldt Myers and was one of four children in the family. She attended a Shelby country grade school, Tennant High School and graduated from Avoca High School. Phyllis was united in marriage to James O. Schueman on June 28, 1945 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They are the parents of three children; James Dale, Linda Rose and Jeffery Otto. Phyllis was a homemaker and a loving mother and wife. She was always willing to help family or others when in need. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her many flowers, cooking and taking care of her lovely home. Phyllis was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Phyllis died at her home in Avoca on Tuesday, January 2, 2007. She had attained the age of eighty two years, two months and twenty four days. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers Robert, Victor and Dick Myers. Phyllis is survived by her husband of sixty one years, James O. Schueman of Avoca, Iowa; her children: James Dale Schueman and his wife Janeé of Avoca, Linda Rose Cruz and her husband Juan of Greeley, Colorado and Jeffery Otto Schueman and his wife Dianne, also of Avoca; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Jamey J. Schulte - Age 29 Jamey Joe Schulte, the son of Terry and LaVonne Heller Schulte, was born on November 14, 1975, at Denison, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. He attended school at Harlan and was a member of the graduating class of 1994 from Harlan Community High School in Harlan, Iowa. Upon graduation, Jamey attended UTI in Omaha, Nebraska. On September 7, 2002, Jamey was united in marriage to Jenny Schaben at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple resided in Harlan. Jamey was employed as a Fiber Optics Field Technician at Iowa Network Services. He was also a volunteer fireman for ten years with the Westphalia Fire Department. Jamey was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. He enjoyed Nebraska football and the New York Yankees baseball. Jamey liked to go 4-wheeling and snowmobiling in the winter months. His dog, Sadie, was very special to him. Jamey died at his home in Harlan, Iowa, on Monday, July 18, 2005, having attained the age of twenty-nine years, eight months and four days. Survivors include his wife, Jenny of Harlan, Iowa; his parents, Terry and LaVonne Schulte of Westphalia, Iowa; his sister, Becca and her husband, Dan Cummins of Sloan, Iowa; his brother, Troy Schulte and his wife, Janet of Liberty, Missouri; his father and mother-in-law, Ron and Marge Schaben of Defiance, Iowa; his sisters-in-law, Becky Schaben of Harlan, Iowa; Lisa Schaben of Defiance, Iowa; his brothers-in-law, Kevin Schaben and his wife, Jessica of Omaha, Nebraska; Andy Schaben of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces and god-daughters, Hanna Cummins and Samantha Schulte, nephews, Brandon Schulte, Chase Thraen, and Donnie Thraen; other relatives and a great many friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, July 22, 2005 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa with Rev. John Frost as the Celebrant and Rev. Robert Hoefler as the Concelebrant. Honorary Casket Bearers were the Westphalia Volunteer Fire Department. Serving as casket bearers were Corey Sorensen, Travis Rust, Kevin Schaben, Eric Schulte, Andy Schaben and Greg Weihs. Interment was in St. Boniface Cemetery, Westphalia, Iowa.

Ula M. Schuemann - Age 81 On this day, Monday, June 13, 2005, our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, left this life to be with her Husband, Father, Mother, Brother, and Sister. For those of us she left behind our hearts are filled with pain and grief and now only memories of her will may the days pass and heal our hearts. Ula was born on July 24, 1922 in Panama, Iowa, the daughter of Richard (Swede) and Maude (Wadsworth) Larson. Ula grew up in Iowa and graduated from Harlan High School on May 23, 1940. She was united in marriage on August 31, 1942, to the love of her life, Franklin H. Schumemann of Avoca, Iowa. In 1956, they moved to Aurora, Illinois where they spent many happy years and raised four children together until the passing of her beloved husband on September 26, 1970. Over the years, Ula worked at Furgeson Lander and Western Electric but enjoyed work most when she co-owned and operated Mijula’s Furniture Store in Oak Forest, Illinois, until her retirement and then moved to Utica, Illinois. Ula will be lovingly remembered for her quick wit and sense of humor. She most enjoyed spending time with her family and loved to cook for them. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her three daughters, Sharon Riley of Oak Forest, Illinois, Karla Tschannen and Robyn Stout of Somonauk, Illinois; and one son, Franklin. Also, her three son-in-laws whom she always called her sons, Thomas Riley, Steven Tschannen Sr. and William Stout Sr.. Ula was the loving grandmother of Deborah (Doug) Kelley, Tammy Riley, Theresa (Keith) Huckaby, Steven (Eugenia) Tschannen Jr., William (Marcie) Stout, Jr., Michele (Thomas) Lawson, as well as loving great-grandmother to William, Patsy, Michael Kelley, Lacey Riley, Kyel, Kevin, Huckaby, Alexander, Steven Lawson, and Colton Stout. She is also survived by her brother, Duane (Virginia) Larson and two very special people in her life, James Ventrice of Utica, Illinois and her cousin, Della (Wayne) Nelson of Hartley, Iowa who was always regarded as her sister, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. She now joins her husband, Frank, also preceding her is her parents, Richard and Maude Larson, her brother, Louis, and a sister, Laura Pedersen. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 A.M. of Friday, June 17, 2005, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with the Rev. Ed Frank officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Avoca, Iowa beside her beloved husband. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. on Friday at the funeral home. Derald "Jiggs" Schuning - Age 78 Derald William Schuning, the son of Orvel and Margaret (Ehlers) Schuning was born on February 5, 1929 in Minden, Iowa. They lived on a farm until Derald was eight years old when they moved into Minden. Derald was baptized and confirmed in the old Minden Congregational Church. He attended country school and then Minden High school and graduated in 1947. He played basketball for Minden High School and was "Athlete of the Year." Derald also played basketball on a Minden Town Team after graduation. While in school he always walked out to his Grandfather Schuning's farm to help on the weekends. Farming was his first love and he bought a used tractor, plow and two row corn picker so he could custom work around the area. He also baled hay for many farmers. His love of farming never left him. Derald spent many hours watching his grandchildren play sports. He attended many football games, basketball and volleyball games and his grandchildren would only need to look up in the bleachers to see their grandpa there. He also loved to listen to his granddaughter, Jessica sing. Lately his most favorite sport was stock car racing. He attended many races every Saturday night with his daughter Marilyn and had a favorite driver in every race. His favorite NASCAR driver was Jeff Gordon. Derald was united in marriage to Darlene Elsie Lubbe on February 5, 1951 in the Minden Congregational Church. They started farming on Rev. John Frieboes's farm west of Oakland. After that, they lived in Carson, Treynor and Persia areas before moving to Harlan in 1996. To this union three children were born. Derald was a seed corn salesman and supervisor for forty-four years making many friends whom he cherished. He and his wife and children raised many hogs over the years and saw many changes in the livestock business. Derald and his children enjoyed riding horses and rode in many area parades and trail rides. Derald died on Friday, February 23, 2007 at the Little Flower Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa having attained the age of seventy-eight years and nineteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Ramona Kardell. Survivors include his wife, Darlene of Harlan; his children: Richard Schuning and his wife Dyan of Neola, Iowa; Diane and her husband Calvin Nielsen of Harlan, Iowa and Marilyn and her husband Pat McKeighan of Council Bluffs, Iowa; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one sister Sharon and her husband Virgil Hoff of Fountain, Colorado; a sister-in-law Velma Lubbe of Harlan, Iowa and a brother-in-law George Kardell of Dallas, Texas; many nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Brian Wohlhuter as the clergy. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Ron Barrier, Charlie Malone, Larry Ehlers, Doug Kunze, Monte Schechinger and Randy Miller. Serving as casket bearers were Todd Hansen, Blake Cooper, Justin Miller, Raymond Freese, Chad Hansen and Lanny Newland. Interment was held in the Minden Cemetery, Minden, Iowa.
