John H. Query, Jr. - Age 76
    
John Henry Query, Jr. was born on May 24, 1935, to John H. and Catherine (Nailor) Query in Long Island, New York. He graduated from high school in Long Island with the Class of 1952 and continued his education at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. He obtained his PhD. degree in education and taught English and Speed Reading college classes at the University of Nebraska Omaha.
     John loved animals, especially dogs. He collected lawn ornaments and World War I and World War II video tapes.
     He was admitted to Creighton University Medical Center where he died on Friday, July 1, 2011, having attained the age of seventy-six years, one month, and seven days. He was preceded in death by his parents.
     John is survived by his son Ken Query of Earling, Iowa; step-daughter Holly Conley of Omaha, Nebraska; two grandchildren; brother Bill Query and his wife Lettia of Honolulu, Hawaii; other family members and friends.
     Rev. Chris Fontanini celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Inurnment was held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling.

Jeff A. Quist - Age 34
    
Jeff Alan Quist was born on October 27, 1977, to Dave Whitlow and Carolyn Quist in Harlan, Iowa. He attended the Harlan Community Schools and received his diploma in 1995.
      He became a mechanic and worked on cars and lawn mowers. If it had wheels, Jeff loved to tear it apart, fix it, and rebuild it. He refinished antiques, worked at CDS and Variety for a short time. He was a prudent shopper - always looking for a bargain and especially browsing on Craig’s List for items to trade. One of his routine activities was to walk down the alley to the funeral home for his "Pauley Pop" and taking nightly walks with Tina and a little miniature doberman pincher named Tooty-Boy that he loved!
     Jeff was admitted to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, where he died on Friday, October 28, 2011, one day after his thirty-fourth birthday.
     He is survived by his mother Carolyn Quist of Harlan, Iowa; father Dave Whitlow of Council Bluffs, Iowa; brother Jamie Quist and his wife Renee of Omaha, Nebraska; half-sister Amanda Whitlow of Council Bluffs; half-brother Chad Whitlow of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandmother Marge Whitlow of Lincoln; nieces and nephews; girlfriend Tina Jacobsen of Harlan; other family members and friends.
     Pastor Dan Hawn officiated the 2:00 PM funeral service on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Lonnie Wirth, Mike Cooper, Mike Petersen, Mike Butler, Albert Carl, and Rick Fields. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.

Steven Charles Quist - Age 55

     Steven Charles Quist was born on November 20, 1951, to John and Nadine (Nelson) Quist in Omaha, Nebraska . He was baptized at First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa and attended Laurel and West Ridge Elementary Schools before graduating from Harlan Community High School. He furthered his education at ITT Technical Institute in Omaha, Nebraska.

     Steve moved to California where he met the love of his life, Nilfa. Steve was united in marriage to Nilfa Varona on December 5, 1981 in Long Beach, California. One son, Adam, was born to this union.

     While living in California, Steve was a general contractor. The family moved back to the Midwest and Steve began working as a Slot Technician and Electronic Technician with Ameristar Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

     He enjoyed playing with his son, Adam, and his friends, but especially liked hanging out with his friend Roy Linton. The two of them shared a love of music and Steve was Roy’s biggest fan. Steve’s musical tastes also included Willie Nelson and the Rolling Stones. Steve’s hobbies were golfing, restoring his Datsun, and watching movies.

     Steve died at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan on Saturday, August 18, 2007, having attained the age of fifty-five years, eight months, and twenty-nine days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Richard Quist and his sister Laura Quist.

     He is survived by his wife Nilfa Quist of Harlan, his son Adam Quist and his fiancé Laura Barry of Omaha, Nebraska, his brother John Quist of San Antonio, Texas; his sister Carolyn Quist of Harlan; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.

     A funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 22, 2007, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan. Pastor Greg White officiated the 1:30 PM service.
