Bruce joined the United States Air Force as a Flight Examiner Aircraft
Commander and served his country until his honorable discharge on June 16,
1975. In 1977, Bruce was employed at the City of Saint Paul and Ramsey
County Hospital in Minnesota. He assisted the city in founding their
homeless programs and the much needed care provider guidelines for care
centers. His passion and need for helping others and the caring and
protecting of the Elderly led him to many nursing homes and hospitals
throughout the country. In 1993, Bruce moved to Baker City, Oregon, and was
employed at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center as the Vice President and
Administrator. The Sisters of St. Francis, who worked at the facility at
that time, introduced the new Vice President to Sandy, who was the Executive
Secretary. It was love at first site for both of them.
On October 15, 1994,
Bruce and Sandy were united in Holy Matrimony at Cannon Beach, Oregon in a
beautiful and intimate ceremony at the Stephanie Inn. Their children, their
families and the Sisters were there to share in the love and glory. This was
a very special family vacation spot for Bruce, Sandy and Mandi, enjoying
flying kites on the beach, collecting sea shells, the serenity of the ocean,
shopping, and eating clam chowder bread bowls. After their marriage, they
resided in Oregon until 1996 when they moved to Harlan, Iowa at 12th and
Baldwin. Life on Baldwin was a beautiful time in their lives. Bruce, Sandy,
Mandi did everything together as a family. The house was overflowing with
love and it extended to their families and to their friends. During the
Holidays, they would decorate the fence and they believed it brought hope,
and a little bit of curiosity to the town. Many young children would notice
the corn on the fence and know that Thanksgiving and Christmas were right
around the corner. It brought Bruce such happiness to know he made someone
smile. After Mandi graduated the family moved to Boise, Idaho and have been
going back and forth ever since in one way or another. The family joke was
that they lived in "Idowa"!
Bruce was a member of
Menza and Rotary. He really enjoyed spending time with his family. The Davis
family welcomed him in as a son, a brother and a friend not an in-law, he
was very touched by such warmth. He enjoyed very much shopping for the
upcoming wedding of his daughter, Mandi. On Fantastic Family Fridays, the
three of them would go off somewhere in Boise and get another plan made or
another purchase made for the wedding. He loved cooking and baking for
family and friends and others that needed a lift. Another favorite was
having Barbeques, and eating all the Mexican food he could possibly eat; his
favorite being taquitos!. Bruce was a very talented man, he painted many
fine pieces of art, one still displayed in the Minneapolis airport. He wrote
poems, books and songs, one family favorite song is "Come on in and stay
awhile, suppers on for free………" In all of his artistic and professional
abilities he spoke from his heart.
His suffering ended

John
D. McKean - Age 80
John Dwight McKean was born on July 10, 1927, to
William and Florence (Petersen) McKean at his grandparents farm near
Portsmouth, Iowa. He lived on that farm for one year before the family moved
to a farm one mile north.
He graduated from
Persia High School in 1945 and farmed until he was drafted into the United
States Army in October of 1950. He completed basic training at Camp Cook,
California, and was then sent to Japan for extensive occupation training. He
served as a medic during the Korean War, earning several medals before his
honorable discharge in 1952.
He purchased his
grandparents’ farm in 1953 and returned to farming with his father west of
Portsmouth. In 1963, he met Dorothy Ratashack at the Music Box in Omaha,
Nebraska, and on August 8, 1964, they were united in marriage at St. John’s
Church of Christ in Council Bluffs, Iowa. One daughter, Marsha Lynn, was
born to this union.
Dwight continued to
farm until his retirement in 1996 but continued to live on the farm until
June of 2002 when he and Dorothy moved to Harlan. He was a hard worker and
kept at a job until it was done. He made do with what he had and went out of
his way to help others.
His daughter was the
apple of his eye and when his grandchildren came along, he went overboard
buying toys and spoiling them. Dwight was as devoted to his family as he was
to God and spent his life serving Him, even in little ways such as giving
gasoline to stranded motorists on the highway. He was an honest man and
never expected his kindness to be repaid. Dwight was also a member of the
American Legion Post No 314 of Persia, and for over 30 years treasurer of
the Persia Methodist Church.
Dwight died on
Thursday, June 19, 2008, at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska,
having attained the age of eighty years, eleven months, and nine days. He
was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his
wife, Dorothy McKean of Harlan, Iowa; his daughter, Marsha and her husband
Tim Slobodnik of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his grandchildren: Jacob and Madison
Slobodnik of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his brother; Dennis McKean and his wife
Donna of LaVista, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Lavina Johnston of Audubon, Iowa;

Fred
J. McKee - Age 90
Fredrick Jacob McKee was born on July 14th,
1917, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Howard and
Ann (Ott) McKee. He attended grade school in
Oakville, Iowa, where his father had a movie
theater and feed store (and sold Purina Chow).
In 1929, they moved to Mediapolis, Iowa, to run
a feed and farm supply store (again selling
Purina Chows). Fred’s dad was a dealer for 27
years, so you can see why Fred had checkerboard
corpuscles. Fred graduated from Mediapolis High
School in 1935. He married Anita Bamsey in
Columbus, Nebraska, on April 26, 1948.
Fred loved sports, especially baseball and
basketball, as well as music. He was a "pretty
good" ball player - four years in high school
and five years on independent teams. He received
his Iowa High School officiating license for
basketball and baseball the day he graduated
from high school which was very unusual. Fred
and Dr. Markham were very instrumental in
getting girls basketball in Harlan (they didn’t
win any popularity contests from a few people).
Fred’s career with Purina really started back in
the 1940's when A. D. Hayes Company of Mt.
Pleasant hired him to build the "feed business"
in five markets for this company - Danville,
Yarmouth, New London, Mt. Pleasant and Eldon. He
didn’t get to Eldon much because there was too
much to do in those other markets. He must have
done a pretty good job because Ralston Purina
honored him and he hadn’t been there a year yet.
"Hours" didn’t mean anything to this guy. He was
always on the run "Plugging the Checkerboard."
Fred trained with Ben Karr in Princeton,
Illinois, and when Ben was made sales manager of
Iowa and Nebraska, he brought Fred with him. He
had one dealer (a lady) in Persia, Iowa,
shipping ten tons (Purina) and $100 (wholesale)
of health products a month when he had to throw
in the sponge. In his 37 years in Harlan
managing Crawford, Carroll, Audubon, Shelby and
sometimes Harrison counties (he had it 4 times
in his time Ha!). With twenty-two dealers, he
shipped 806,000 tons of Purina Chows
(concentrates), $7, 280,000 (Wholesale) of
health aids. If you want to take the 806,000
tons of concentrates and put that into
"Complete" feeds you would have 3,224,000. How
about that? So much for Fred’s Purina career.
Fred spent 3½ years overseas with the 75th
" Seabees" attached to the Marine Corps. They
spent D-Day at Bougainville, Leyte and Summar
during World War II.
Fred was a good contributor for the Harlan
Community, probably more than a lot of people
realize. He contributed some sizeable amounts to
the Congregational United Church of Christ, the
Vets Building, baseball field, Myrtue Memorial
Hospital, Corley Hall, Boys and Girls Scouts,
McKee Community Room at the Elm Crest Retirement
Community, girls basketball and Little League
baseball. He didn’t turn down too many things
that pertained to the helping of the Harlan
Community. He would like to leave you some words
of advice in his favorite saying: "Don’t look
back . . . there may be somebody chasing you."
Fred died on Sunday, February 10, 2008, at
Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having
attained the age of ninety years, six months,
and twenty-seven days. He was preceded in death
by his parents and his wife.
Fred is survived by one son, William "Bill"
Flodine and his wife Maryanne, who live in
Sparks, Nevada, one granddaughter, Tammi Cole of
Riverside, California, three
great-granddaughters, other family members, and
many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, February
16, 2008 at the Congregational United Church of

Post No. 941 present.
Lee W. McLaughlin - Age 66
Lee William McLaughlin,
son of Willard and Emma Caroline (Robinson) McLaughlin, was born on December
4, 1941 in Council Bluffs, Iowa and baptized at the Tennant Methodist
Church. Lee was a member of the last class to graduate from Tennant High
School in 1960.
On August 24, 1962, Lee was united in marriage to Marie Nielsen at the
Evangelical United Brethren Church in Defiance, Iowa. Three children were
born to this union: Scott, Mark, and Jay. After their marriage, they
traveled to Waco, Texas, where Lee was to await orders from the United Air
Force. Marie was enrolled at the Baylor University, while Lee was in
training at James Conley Air Force Base. He then continued training in the
air force in Portland, Oregon and then returned to Shelby County where he
was engaged in farming with his father-in-law, Alfred Nielsen, near
Defiance, Iowa. Lee did however, continue both his military and civilian
education attending Radar Intercept School and Navigator School within the
Iowa Air National Guard completing his undergraduate navigator training in
November 1963. He served his country for six years receiving the Air Force
Outstanding Unit Award with one Oak Leaf Cluster and was a small arms expert
marksman. During his time in the Iowa Air National Guard, Lee flew F89
Scorpion jets and was commissioned a First Lieutenant. He was also
introduced to flying private airplanes. He was proud to own and fly his own
twin Comanche B N9783Y. His private airplane experience included treasurer
and longtime member of the Midstates International Comanche Society, whose
goal was to support historical Comanche aircraft.
Lee served for many years on the REC Board of Directors; he was active in
his church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, the administrative board,
and was a junior high fellowship leader. Lee’s objective in his life was to
reach beyond the community, especially in regard to learning. This is
evident as he continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames where
he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Farm Operations. His education
in the agricultural field was well put to use as Lee became a successful
farmer and eventually partnered with his son, Scott. He was known to say
that for him work was play and play was his work.
A special joy for Lee was his ability to relax with his family, especially
his grandchildren.
Lee died on Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan,
as a result of a vehicle accident near his home, having attained the age of
sixty-six years, one month, and five days. He is preceded in death by his
father.

and his wife Shawn of Defiance; Mark and his wife Christy of Ankeny, Iowa;
and Jay of Manning, Iowa; his mother Emma Caroline of Shelby; six

Irene
Mores - Age 86
A Harlan native, Helen
"Irene" Mores, was born in Harlan on July 25, 1918, to pioneer Danish
Shelby County family Morris and Anna (Christiansen) Frederickson. Her
father’s parents, Lars & Anna Frederickson, arrived in America in 1878
and bought land in Shelby County in 1892. The youngest of three
children, Irene, was the salutatorian of the Harlan High School Class of
1936 and later attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, where
she earned a BA in commerce in 1941. While at Iowa she served on the
University Student Publications Board, an experience which would serve
her in the future.
Irene returned to the Harlan area after college and worked in Omaha at the
downtown Brandeis Department Store and later for Firestone Tire. It was
during that time she began dating Harlan Tribune publisher Leo Mores. She
practiced ecumenism long before it was popular in Shelby Country - as a
Baptist, she married a Catholic, Leo Mores on June 16,1942. She taught
Catechism to her four children, all the while maintaining her Baptist faith.
While Leo served in WWII stationed in Iowa, she ran the family newspaper for
three years. Upon Leo’s return from military service in 1945, they purchased
the competing Harlan News-Advertiser, and the operation then became a
twice-weekly newspaper.
Irene was a charter member of the First Baptist Church and past president
and treasurer of the church Farther Lights Society. She was a past board and
charter member of the Baptist Memorial Home (now Elm Crest Retirement
Community) and was a leader in numerous fund drives for the facility. In
1997, she was honored for her more than 20 years of service to the Memorial
Home Auxiliary, many of those years serving as the group’s treasurer and
publicity chair. She and Leo moved to Elm Crest’s Assisted Living apartments
in October 2000 and in March 2004 they moved into Elm Crest’s Retirement
Center.
