Suzette R. Langenfeld - Age 81
Suzette Rose Langenfeld was born
on December 19, 1924, to Joseph and Mary (Hammes) Sondag joining six
brothers and sisters. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Our Lady
of Fatima in Portsmouth where she remained an active member throughout her
entire life. Suzette attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Portsmouth,
Iowa, before graduating in 1942.
On October 1, 1946, she was
united in marriage to Richard Langenfeld at St. Mary’s in Portsmouth. They
made their home on the farm near Portsmouth until 1977 when they moved into
town. Six children were born to their union: Mary, Jane, Don, John, Allen,
and Ann. Suzette was a homemaker and cared for her family while serving her
church as sacristan, enjoying her hobbies of quilting and history. She was a
member of a quilting club and a member of the Shelby County Historical
Society in Harlan, as well as becoming involved in the Widows or Widowers
(WOW) group after the death of her husband of forty-five years in July of
1991.
Suzette Langenfeld entered Myrtue
Medical Center on November 7, 2006, where she died hours later having
attained the age of eighty-one years, ten months, and nineteen days. In
addition to her parents, Suzette was preceded in death by her husband
Richard, her son Allen, sister Marie Sondag, and brothers Francis, Ted, and
Msgr. Joseph Sondag.
Suzette is survived by her
children: Mary (Leo) Naujokaitis of Omaha, Nebraska, Jane (John) Parsons of
Cave Creek, Arizona, Don (Sandy) Langenfeld of Mt. Prospect, Illinois, John
(Kelene) Langenfeld of Omaha, and Ann (Joe) Breedlove of Colorado Springs,
Colorado; a brother Rich (Leona) Sondag of Portsmouth, Iowa, and a sister
Barbara (Rich) Heller of Portsmouth; twelve grandchildren, six
great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Ceil Brown and Joan Sondag,
brother-in-law W.G. Langenfeld, nieces, nephews, other family members, and
many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was
celebrated by Rev. John Dorton at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, November 13, 2006,
at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa.
Interment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth with Philip
Langenfeld serving as an honorary casket bearer and Kevin Naujokaitis,
Steven Parsons, Alan Naujokaitis, Michael Langenfeld, Justin Langenfeld and
Eric Langenfeld serving as casket bearers.

Don A.
Larimore - Age 87
Don Arthur Larimore was born in Avoca, Iowa, on
November 4, 1919, in the third house north of the
United Church which has now been torn down. He
was the son of Arthur and Elsie (Schilling) Larimore
and was one of four children in the family.
His family moved to Monroe, Nebraska, and that is
where Don grew up and attended school, graduating in
1937. Don and his family returned to Avoca
later in 1937. He worked around the area for various farmers and also worked
for the Rock Island Railroad and the Gamble Store.
Don enlisted in the Navy in 1941 and was sent to Idaho for his boot
training. He later received a medical discharge because of an injury he had
sustained at the age of 19. He then went to California to work for Douglas
Aircraft, building airplanes. When the war began, Don helped build war
planes and bombers.
While in California, Don married Harriet Applegate on April 14, 1941 in
Venice. They had met previously in Oakland, Iowa, Harriet's hometown. They
were not blessed with children but enjoyed a good life together for sixty
three years until Hattie died on May 12, 2004.
Don and Hattie returned to the Avoca area and Don bought a cream route,
working for the Avoca Creamery for eighteen years. After selling his route,
he purchased the Avoca Bowling Lanes and they both worked there for nineteen
years. It was sold and Don worked as a rural mail carrier until he retired
in 1984. Don was a member of the United Church of Avoca. He enjoyed playing
golf and working in his yard. He lived in the same house since 1955. He was
also a member of the Pottawattamie County Last Man's Club, never missing a
meeting. He has been a member of the Avoca American Legion Post since 1941.
Don has been a resident of the Avoca Lodge Assisted Living for about a year
and that is where he died on August 29, 2007. He had attained the age of
eighty seven years, nine months and twenty five days. He was preceded in
death by his parents and his wife, Hattie.
Don is survived by three sisters: Phyllis Bintz and her husband, Earl, of
Neola, Iowa, Robin Thomsen and her husband, Beaner, of Kimballton, Iowa and
Colleen Rutenbeck of Des Moines, Iowa; nieces and nephews: Gale Bintz, Becky
Jacobsen, Mary Lefeber, Collette Rutenbeck, Charles Rutenbeck, Cris Briger,
Lori Petters, Dawn Schueman, Sally Jacobsen, George Applegate, Cynthia
Applegate, Shirlee Matthews, Nancy Stout, Donna Jo Price and Brian
Applegate; many great -nieces and great-nephews and many friends.
Funeral
services were held on Saturday, September 1, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the United
Church of Avoca with Pastor Nancy Ross-Hullinger as the clergy. Serving as
casket bearers were Paul Petters, George Applegate, Wayne Jacobsen, Dave
Schueman, Gale Bintz and Charles Rutenbeck. Military Rites were given by the
American Legion Fred Funston Post No. 227 of Avoca, Iowa. Interment was held
in Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa

Jane Larsen - Age 86
Jane
Ellen Larsen was born in North Dakota on the Standing Rock Indian
Reservation May 18, 1921, the daughter of Fred and Evelyn Davis. While she
was still a baby her family moved back to Audubon County, Iowa.
She
started school in Ross, Iowa; later she attended a country school south of
Audubon, then a country school near the old Gardner Store ten miles east of
Hamlin. Jane attended high school in Audubon, where she met her future
husband, Lawrence. While in Audubon she worked for the Soil Conservation
Office and the real estate and insurance firm of Garute, Cramer and Johnson.
Then she attended Drake University and later transferred to the University
of Iowa where she worked in the statistical services department and the
University Hospital.
On December
27, 1943, she married Lawrence Larsen and followed him with his Army
transfer to Spokane, Washington, where their first child was born in 1947,
Barbara (Boeck). Then they moved to Fort Knox until her husband was
transferred to Japan with the occupation troops. She and her daughter spent
that time back in Audubon. After Lawrence’s return from Japan they were
stationed in Battle Creek, Michigan, where their first son, David, was born
in 1949. After her husband’s discharge from the army they moved to Harlan in
1949; where she had lived ever since. Their second son, Robert, was born
here in 1950.
Jane was on the board of
directors for the Iowa State Medical Auxiliary for many years, and served as
the vice president as well. She and her husband have been members of
Immanuel Lutheran Church from when they first moved to Harlan. As one of the
original members of the Harlan Review Club, she enjoyed the fellowship
throughout the years.
For
hobbies she enjoyed quilting, sewing, entertaining, bird watching, and
reading books. For many years she and her husband had a summer home on
Blanche Lake, Minnesota, where she enjoyed hosting family and friends and
going fishing. One of her greatest joys was sitting down with friends and
family, especially grandchildren, and playing cards and board games.
On
Sunday afternoon, June 24, 2007, Jane passed away at Jennie Edmundson
Hospital in Council Bluffs. She is survived by her husband Lawrence; her
daughter Barbara Boeck of Woodbine, Iowa; her sons David Larsen of Kalona,
Iowa, and Bob Larsen of Irvine, California; her sisters Martha Renftle of
Indianola, Iowa, Mary Conklin of Grand Island, Nebraska, and JoAnn Patrick
of Carson, Iowa; ten grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Christopher P. Larsen.
She will be greatly missed.
A
Memorial Service was held on Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at 2:00 PM in the
Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Chellew officiating.
Joyce Larsen - Age 55
Joyce Larsen, the daughter of Nick and Alma
(Arkfeld) Bruck, was born August 30, 1949, at the
home of her grandmother, Clara Bruck, in Harlan,
Iowa. She was raised in Portsmouth, graduating from
St. Mary’s Panama -Portsmouth Catholic School in
1967.
On September 6, 1969, Joyce
married Jim Larsen in Portsmouth, Iowa. Joyce and
Jim made their home in central Iowa, most recently,
Newton, Iowa. In addition to a brief banking career,
Joyce had childcare in her home for thirty years,
having taken care of two generations of children. In
June of 2001 she was diagnosed with breast cancer
and continued her childcare until December 3, 2004.
She died Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at Skiff
Medical Center’s Hospice Unit in Newton, Iowa,
having attained the age of fifty-five years, three
months and thirty days.
In addition to her
grandparents, Joyce is preceded in death by her
mother, Alma Bruck. Survivors include her husband,
Jim of Newton, Iowa; three children: Cory Larsen and
his wife, Jennifer of Newton, Iowa; Lisa and her
husband, Jeff Martin of Newton, Iowa; Brook Larsen
and his wife, Jennifer of Davenport, Iowa; seven
grandchildren: Ivy Larsen, Oliver, Ruby, and Scarlet
Martin and William, Ava, and Soleil Larsen; her
father, Nick Bruck of Portsmouth, Iowa; brothers and
sisters: Nick Bruck and his wife, Linda of
Bettendorf, Iowa; Ron Bruck of Lincoln, Nebraska;
Bob Bruck and his wife, Linda of Black Earth,
Wisconsin; Rick Bruck and his wife, Laurie of
Gretna, Nebraska; Joan and her husband, Steve Ingram
of Gretna, Nebraska; Jolene and her husband, Todd
Roecker of Atlantic, Iowa; Janet and her husband,
Rick Guse of Omaha, Nebraska; and Randy Bruck and
his wife, Julie of Portsmouth, Iowa.

Cemetery in Portsmouth, Iowa, with Nick Bruck, Nick
Bruck, Jr., Ron Bruck, Bob Bruck, Bill Larsen, Rick
Bruck, Jack Larsen, Randy Bruck, and Mike Larsen
serving as casket bearers.
Marie E. Larson - Age 92
Marie Elizabeth Larson,
the daughter of William and Mathilda Appel Jacobsen, was born on March 12,
1913, at Botna, Iowa. She attended country school in the Irwin, Iowa area.
Marie was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin,
Iowa.
On May 24, 1941, Marie
was united in marriage to Lester Larson at Omaha, Nebraska. Two children
were born to this union, Russell and Mary Alice. After their marriage, they
lived on a farm and sold chickens and eggs. Lester died on November 1, 1985.
Marie lived on the farm for five more years and in 1993 moved to Harlan,
Iowa. After retiring, Marie sold Avon in the Defiance and Irwin, Iowa areas.
She was a member of St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin, Iowa and the VFW Auxiliary. Marie loved
going to sales, sewing, and doing work with her hands. She enjoyed gardening
and flowers were her specialty.
Marie died on
Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at her home in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the
age of ninety-one years and five days. In addition to her parents and her
husband, Lester, Marie was preceded in death by her son, Russell and her
brother and sisters, Delbert Jacobsen, Mathilda Miller, and Valeria Bestul.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Alice Larson of Harlan, Iowa; four
grandchildren: Laura Smith of Avoca, Iowa; Ann Zimmerman of Council Bluffs,
Iowa; Jeff Erlbacher of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Jennifer Erlbacher of
Scotts Bluffs, Nebraska; five great-grandchildren: Russell Zimmerman and his
wife, Mandy, Heather Zimmerman; Jacob Smith, Lindsay Smith, and Kristian
Arnold; her brothers and sisters, Dewey Jacobsen and his wife, Joyce of
Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Raymond Jacobsen of Los Angeles, California; Virginia
Dawson of Harlan, Iowa; Irene Schienle of Mission Hills, California; nieces,
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were
held on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at 1:00 P.M. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church
in Irwin, Iowa, with Pastor Victor Johnson officiating. Interment was in
Danway Cemetery in Irwin, Iowa, with Lindsay Smith, Rod Legge, Heather
Zimmerman, and Rodney Hansen serving as honorary casket bearers. Serving as
casket bearers were Roger Ahrenholtz, Russell Zimmerman, Troy Ahrenholtz,
Jacob Smith, Jeff Erlbacher, and Kip Arnold.

one year).
In addition
to this she
was a farm
wife and
helped with
the field
work, raised
a large
garden and
did a lot of
canning.
Edna worked
for seven
years as a
cook at the
Minden Café
and also
operated a
little
neighborhood
grocery
store in
Council
Bluffs. She
took care of
her grandma
the last
three and
half years
of her life
in her home
and cared
for her
mother for
eighteen and
a half
years. In
1986 she
moved to
Minden and
managed the
motel for
fifteen
months
before
moving to
Neola for
fourteen
years. She
then became
a resident
of Rose
Vista
Nursing Home
in Woodbine,
Iowa.
Edna died on
Friday,
September 1,
2006 at Rose
Vista
Nursing Home
in Woodbine,
Iowa having
attained the
age of
eighty eight
years, nine

Iowa. He

On December
28, 1939,
Bob was
united in
marriage to
Glenavene P.
Williams in
Council
Bluffs,
Iowa. Three
children
were born to
this union:
Pat, Donna
and
Margaret.
After their
marriage,
the couple
joined the
Altamont
Baptist
Church
located in
rural Shelby
County,
Iowa. Bob
and
Glenavene
farmed for
many years.
They retired
from farming
in 1985, but
remained on
the farm,
spending
their
winters in
Apache
Junction,
Arizona.
Glenavene
died on
April 12,
1998.
Bob enjoyed
farming and
raising
Angus
Cattle. He
took great
pride in his
farm. He had
the
straightest
corn rows
and was very
particular
with his
crops and
livestock.
Bob spent
his later
years riding
his
4-wheeler
around the
farm,
keeping his
weeds in
check and
surveying
his farm.
He died on
Sunday,
February 12,
2006, at the
Methodist
Hospital in
Omaha,
Nebraska,
having
attained the
age of
eighty-eight
years, two
months and
nineteen
days. In
addition to
his parents,

preceded in
death by a

Eugene S. Lefeber - Age 75
Eugene "Gene" Stephen Lefeber, the son of John H and Emma Leinen Lefeber,
was born on April 17, 1931, in Portsmouth, Iowa. He was baptized and
confirmed at St. Mary’s Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth and
had his first communion on May 26, 1938. After graduating from high school,
Gene enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country
honorably from 1952 to 1956.
On July 14, 1953, Eugene and
JoAnne Frank were united in marriage at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in
Earling, Iowa. To this union, eight children were born: Dan, Diane, Julie,
Kathy, Randy, Peggy, Rick, and Kelly. After his discharge from the service
in 1956, Gene moved his family back to the Portsmouth area and began
farming. He was later employed at Western Iowa Pork, Key Real Estate, Ouren
Real Estate, Terry Knapp Real Estate and finally at Hy-Vee retiring in 1999.
Gene died on Thursday, November
16, 2006, at Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa having attained the age of
seventy five years, six months and thirty days. He is preceded in death by
his parents, his wife JoAnne, one daughter, Peggy Lefeber and brothers:
Richard, Ernest and Robert.
He is survived by his children:

Tom Butler of Harlan, Iowa; Julie and her husband Bob McCool of Tennant,

Kelly J. Lefeber - Age 41
Kelly Jo Lefeber, the
youngest of three daughters born to Leland Wayne and
Minnie Mae Martin Marco, was born on September 12,
1962, in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized and
confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in
Harlan. She attended school in Harlan and graduated
with the Class of 1981. Following graduation, Kelly
worked at CDS in Harlan before moving to Des Moines
with her mother for a year following her father’s
death.
Kelly was united in marriage to Keith Alan
Lefeber on May 2, 1987, in Harlan, Iowa. To this union two daughters, Kayla
and Cassandra, were born. Kelly was employed as a warehouse clerk at Variety
Distributors in Harlan for several years. She was a big fan of racing,
whether it was horses, dogs or stock cars, she loved them all. She also
enjoyed going to the casinos and to River City Lancer hockey games in
Council Bluffs. She enjoyed visiting with people and was a very outgoing
person. Kelly was a devoted wife and loving mother who was very proud of her
girls and all of their accomplishments and milestones. She was also a member
of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan.
Kelly died on Sunday,
June 13, 2004, at the Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, having
attained the age of forty-one years, nine months and one day.
She is preceded in
death by her parents, Leland and Minnie Marco. She is survived by her
husband, Keith Lefeber, her children, Kayla and Cassandra; two sisters:
Catherine and her husband, Brad McQueen and Mary Marco; brother-in-law, Ron
Lefeber and his wife, Luann, all of Harlan, Iowa, nieces, nephews other
relatives and many friends.
A Mass of Christian
Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at 11:00 AM at St.
Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa with Rev. Robert Hoefler as the
celebrant. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Kris Marco, Bre McQueen,
Emily Lefeber, Anthony Lefeber, Charles Lefeber, Becci McQueen, Kim Marco,
Niki Marco and Andrea Lohoff. Serving as casket bearers were Dan Martin,
Scott Andersen, George Buthmann, David Martin, Mark Martin and Brad McQueen.
Interment was held in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.

Leinen - Age 80
Donald
Peter Leinen, the son of
Joseph and Caroline Stinn Leinen, was born on November 15,
1925 at Portsmouth,
Iowa.
He
was baptized and
confirmed at St. Mary’s
Catholic Church in
Portsmouth, Iowa. Don
attended school at St.
Mary’s Catholic School
in Portsmouth, Iowa, and
was a member of the
graduating class of
1943.
On September 21, 1950,
Don was inducted into
the United States Army
at Omaha, Nebraska. He
served his country
during the Korean
Conflict, where he
earned three bronze
stars. Don was honorably
discharged on September
15, 1952, at Camp
Carson, Colorado. After
being discharged from
the United States Army,
Don returned home to
Portsmouth, where he
began to farm. He was
very active in the
church. He even helped
build the church by
mixing cement for the
brick and block layers.
Don was a charter member

Museum, Portsmouth
Centennial Member, a 3rd
Degree Knights of
Columbus of Portsmouth
and a 4th Degree Member
of the Luke E. Hart

Leo C. Leinen - Age 87
Leo Constance
Leinen, the son of Nicholas and Agnes Kenkel Leinen, was born on
September 9, 1918, at home on the farm in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized
on September 15, 1918, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa.
Leo attended St. Joseps Catholic School in Earling. After school, he farmed in
Shelby County, Iowa.
On June 29,
1943, Leo was united in marriage to Marjorie Burger at St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Ten children were born to this union:
Sharon, Mary Ann, Gail, Nancy, Gary, Cindy, Leo, Doug, Lisa, and Brian.
After their marriage, Leo farmed and then began working at Farmland
Foods and worked there for twenty-five years, retiring in 1981.
Leo was a
lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa, and he
enjoyed all sports, flowers and gardening. He also liked to decorate for
the holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas. In 1995, he and
Marjorie moved to Omaha, Nebraska.
He died on
Monday, October 31, 2005, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska,
having attained the age of eighty-seven years, one month and twenty-two
days. In addition to his parents, Leo was preceded in death by his
brothers, Lavern and Nick.
Survivors
include his wife, Marjorie of Omaha, Nebraska; his children: Sharon and
her husband, Verlin Kreus and Mary Ann Anderson all of Omaha, Nebraska;
Gail Leinen and his wife, Connie of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Nancy and her

Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa at 11:00 A.M. with Rev.

in Earling, Iowa, with Todd Anderson, Tony Kreus, Shane Anderson, Tyrone
Kreus, Matthew Leinen, Nick Nielsen, Adam Leinen, and Nathan Anderson

Verlee Leinen - Age 66
Verlee Leinen
was born on April 21, 1941, to Zeno and Viola (Schwery) Leinen on a farm
near Portsmouth, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady
of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth and attended school at St. Mary’s
Catholic School.
After her
graduation from high school in 1959, she attended Marycrest College in
Davenport. She transferred to Iowa State University where she graduated in
1963 with her degree in Home Economics. Verlee did her post-graduate work in
Vermillion, South Dakota, Laramie, Wyoming, and Fairbanks, Alaska. Her first
teaching position was in Ottawa, Illinois, where she stayed for three years.
She then spent time teaching in Klickitat, Washington, Window Rock, Arizona,
and Valdez, Alaska.
Verlee worked
as a recreational therapist at Harbor View Hospital in Valdez for four
years, then operated the Serendipity Gift Shop on Richardson Highway 45
miles outside the city of Valdez for approximately ten years. In 1989, she
went to Prince William Sound, Alaska, to help with the Valdez oil spill.
She moved to
Anchorage and worked for Hope Cottages, a residential facility providing
community services to individuals with developmental disabilities. She also
worked at the Anchorage School District at Bartlett High School performing
many of the same duties as she did at Hope Cottages.
Verlee loved
the outdoors. Her hobbies were fishing and hunting, especially big game such
as moose and bear. She also liked cross-country skiing and snow shoeing.
Verlee died on
Friday, June 29, 2007, in Anchorage, Alaska, having attained the age of
sixty-six years, two months, and eight days. She was preceded in death by
her parents and her sister Linda Daoust.
She is
survived by her brothers and sisters: Ursula Bruck of Portsmouth, Iowa,
James Leinen and his wife Dorothy of Denison, Iowa, Orville Leinen and his
wife Kathleen of Panora, Iowa, Harvey Leinen and his wife Charlotte of
Harlan, Iowa, Eunice Blum and her husband Gilbert Loeffler of Panama, Iowa,
Mildred and her husband Jerry Brus of Denison, and Zita and her husband
Gaylen Smith of Portsmouth; her brother-in-law Mark Daoust of Atlantic,
Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
A Mass
of Christian Burial was held on Friday, July 6, 2007, with Rev. John Dorton
officiating the 10:30 AM service at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in
Portsmouth, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Jeff Leinen, Richard Prososki,
Scott Leinen, and her godson from Russia, Paul. Serving as casket bearers
were Brian Daoust, Roger Leinen, David Smith, John Bruck, Roger Blum, and
Jerry Brus. Interment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth.
Alfred L. Leonard, Sr. - Age 78
Alfred Leo Leonard, Sr., the son
of Elmer Leo and Rose Lee Garnsey Leonard, was born on July 24, 1927, at
Redfield, South Dakota. He attended school at Redfield, South Dakota. He and
his family moved to Bartlett, Iowa where he finished grade school and
graduated high school as Valedictorian.
Following graduation, Alfred helped his parents on the farm. He joined the
HQ and HQ Co 168th Infantry National Guard in Council Bluffs,
Iowa, in 1949. Alfred was stationed at Fort Mammoth, New Jersey. Following
his honorable discharge, he returned to Bartlett to farm.
On June
14, 1953, Alfred was united in marriage to Bernice Ruth Petersen at Anderson
Grove Church in Fort Crook, Nebraska. The couple moved to Fort Crook after
living in an apartment in Omaha for six months. Four children were born to
this union: Elaine, Leo, Donald, and Char. They lived in Fort Crook where
Alfred farmed for nine years. In 1962, they purchased a farm and relocated
to Portsmouth, Iowa, where they farmed until retiring in 1988. Alfred worked
at local golf courses and then in 1991, they moved to Harlan, Iowa. He
became a resident of Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, in February
2003.
Alfred
was a member of the Anderson Grove Presbyterian Church in Fort Crook,
Nebraska, and the Farm Bureau.
Alfred
died on Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan,
Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-eight years, one month and seven
days. In addition to his parents, Alfred was preceded in death by his infant
son, Donald and his twin brother, Albert Leonard.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Leonard of Harlan, Iowa; his children:
Elaine and her husband, Roger Bruck of Persia, Iowa; Leo Leonard and his
wife, Denise of Waterloo, Iowa; Char and her husband, Denny Arkfeld of
Defiance, Iowa; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four
step-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; his sister: Adelaide
Hendrickson of Omaha, Nebraska; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, September 3, 2005, at the First
United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa, at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Dave
Swinton officiating. Military Rites were conducted in the Anderson Grove
Presbyterian Cemetery in Bellevue, Nebraska, by the Nebraska Military Honors
Team with Dr. Joe Scahill officiating. Serving as casket bearers were Adam
Bruck, Justin Leonard, Peggy Cole, Richard Bruck, Jenna Leonard, Keith
Bruck, Nathan Leonard, and Ashley McDonald.
Bernadine M. Leuck - Age 86
Bernadine Margaret Leuck,
the daughter of Michael Peter and Angela Greiner Leuck, was born on April 2,
1918 on the farm where she lived all of her life until moving to Harlan in
1999, when she made her home with her brother, Henry. She was baptized and
confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church. She attended country school and
then Harlan High School and graduated with the class of 1937.
After high school Bernadine remained on the family farm and helped with the
daily chores of running that farm. She always had a large vegetable garden,
enjoyed tending to her flower gardens and dogs. Bernadine made one big trip,
on a train, outside of Shelby County and that was to see her twin sister in
Denver. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan and a
former member of St. Anne’s Guild.
Bernadine died on Sunday, February 27, 2005 at her home in Harlan having
attained the age of eighty-six years, ten months and twenty-five days. She
is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sisters: Anton, Sue
Milano, Frank, John, Joseph, Michael, Pete, Anne Entsmingen, Margaret Goede,
Nick and Catherine.
She is survived by her brother, Henry of Harlan and her sister, Marie Dolesh
of Chicago, Illinois, nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at 11:30 AM at
St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa with Rev. Robert Hoefler as
the celebrant. Serving as casket bearers were David Goede, Don Goede, Verle
Greer, Wilbert Roenfeld, Ken Coenen and Wendell Knauss. Interment was held
in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa.
Henry Leuck -
Age 88
Henry John Leuck was
born on February 4, 1920, to Michael and Angela
(Greiner) Leuck in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized
and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in
Westphalia on February 8, 1920. He attended
country school and graduated from Harlan High
School in 1938. After his graduation, Henry
worked on the family farm until he entered the
military.
Henry enlisted in the United States Army on
August 31, 1942 and worked as a surgical
technician in the operating room for three years
while stationed in the United States. He was
sent overseas and was put on a hospital plan as
a medical technician that brought wounded and
sick soldiers from the islands in the Southwest
Pacific to Hamilton Airfield in California. He
obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was
honorably discharged on January 28, 1946.
Upon his return home, he began farming in the
Harlan area and was united in marriage to
Margaret Pitzer on July 12, 1977. They made
their home in Harlan and Henry farmed until his
retirement.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed trap shooting,
winning four trophies. He walked every day in
Pioneer Park and would take care of the
squirrels, ducks, and birds during the winter on
those walks.
Henry would drive to Council Bluffs or Omaha up
to three times a week so he could go dancing. He
liked to travel a lot and would winter in
Arizona with Marge and travel to Branson,
Missouri, in the fall. He was a member of the
American Legion Post 150 of Harlan.
Henry died on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at Myrtue
Medical Center in Harlan, having attained the
age of eighty-eight years, two months, and
eighteen days. He was preceded in death by his
wife Margaret, his parents, and his brothers and
sisters: Anne, Catherine, Marie, Margaret, Sue,
Bernadine, Nick, Mike, John, Frank, Peter,
Anton, and Joseph. He is survived by his nieces
and nephews, other family members, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday,
April 25, 2008, with Rev. Bob Hoefler
celebrating the 11:00 AM service at St.
Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa.
Serving as casket bearers were Garey Ensminger,
Donald Goede, Harvey Ensminger, Dave Goede, Don
Goede, and John F. Leuck. Military Rites were
performed by the Harlan American Legion Helmer
Reyelt Post No. 150 and the Shelby County VFW
Post No. 941 at the Harlan Cemetery.
John N. Leuschen, Sr. -
Age 89
John Nicholas Leuschen, Sr., son
of Nicholas C. And Elizabeth (Thielen) Leuschen, was born at Panama, Iowa on
February 15, 1917. He was baptized and confirmed at
St. Mary’s
Catholic Church in Panama and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama.
After school, John farmed with his father on the family farm east of Panama.
On June 19, 1941, John was united
in marriage to Margaret Carey at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan,
Iowa. To this union, one son, John, Jr., was born. In 1942, John and
Margaret purchased a farm west of Panama. They made this their home until
their retirement in 1974, where he and Margaret then made their home in
Panama. John served as a member of the Shelby County F.H.A. Committee from
1955 to 1957, and also served as director of the Panama Grain and Mercantile
Company and the Panama Telephone Company. He was also a director for the
Washington Township Number 8 rural school.
After retirement, John remained
active in farming as well as with St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he and
Margaret were lifetime members. In his younger years, John enjoyed the
outdoors while hunting and fishing. He was a dedicated husband and loving
father who honored the land he farmed with hard work. Even in his later
years, he took great pride in his home in Panama and kept himself busy with
yard work.
Margaret died on January 4, 2000,
and after her death, John continued to make his home in Panama until June of
2006, when he moved to Earling and became a resident of the Little Flower
Haven. This is where he died on August 19, 2006, having attained the age of
eighty-nine years, six months and four days.
In addition to his wife and
parents, John was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Hilda Fahn,
Henrietta Schilz, Marie Coenen, Helen Bieker, Urban Leuschen, Donald
Leuschen, Rita Leuschen and Nicholas Leuschen, Jr. He is survived by his
son, John Leuschen, Jr., of Panama, Iowa, several nieces and nephews, other
relatives and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was
celebrated by the Rev. John Dorton at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, August 21, 2006,
at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Interment
was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery with Bill Fahn, George Leuschen, David Soar,

Dominic T. Lickteig
- Age 90
Dominic Thomas
Lickteig, son of Frank and Elizabeth (Wolken)
Lickteig, was born on April 11, 1918 in Greeley,
Kansas. He was baptized and confirmed at St.
John’s Catholic Church in Greeley, Kansas and
graduated from St. John’s High School. In the
fall of 1941, Dominic moved from Oregon to
Shelby County, Iowa to work for his older
brother Ray Lickteig on the farm.
On April 7, 1942, Dominic was united in marriage
to Ida Faye Pitts at St. John’s Catholic Church
in Greeley. Five children were born to this
union: Dennis, Mary, Timothy, Alice, and Jerome.
The couple resided in Shelby County where
Dominic continued to help his brother Ray farm
and raise his children.
In 1943, Dominic started farming near Harlan and
in 1945, Dominic and Ida Faye moved to Battle
Creek where they continued to farm for one year
until they bought a farm near Defiance, Iowa.
Dominic was a long-time member of St. Peter’s
Catholic Church in Defiance and a member of the
Knights of Columbus, Earling Council No. 1741,
Fourth Degree.
On April 28, 2008, he became a resident of
Manilla Manor in Manilla, Iowa, and it was there
that he died on Saturday, June 21, 2008, having
attained the age of ninety years, two months,
and ten days. He is preceded in death by his
parents and his great-grandson Dustin Eugene
Lickteig.
He is survived by his wife, Ida Faye of Manilla,
Iowa; their children: Dennis Lickteig of
Waterloo, Iowa; Mary and her husband Ray Mumm of
Ute, Iowa; Timothy Lickteig and his wife Carol
of Dow City, Iowa; Alice and her husband Terry
Weiland of Aurora, Colorado; and Jerome Lickteig
and his wife Jill of Elk Horn, Iowa; twenty

Paul Cemetery in Defiance, Iowa.
Bernice Linden - Age 73
Bernice Christine
Linden, the daughter of Emanuel and Margaret (Marcusen)
Andersen was born on October 2, 1930 near
Kimballton, Iowa. She attended country school at
Sharon Center in Audubon County, grades K-2; Irwin
Consolidated schools, grades 3-6; rural Audubon
County school, grades 7 and 8; Audubon High School,
grade 9; and Harlan High School, grades 10-12,
graduating in 1949. She also attended Iowa Western
Community College in Harlan, graduating in 1982 from
the Licensed Practical Nursing Program.
Bernice was united in
marriage to Duane O. Linden on January 10, 1950 at the Tennant Methodist
Church in Tennant, Iowa. They were blessed with eight children: Dean,
Sharon, Shirley, Susan, Sarah, Sally, Sena and Shawn. Duane and Bernice
always farmed in Shelby County, as well as for a short time in Harrison
County and in Missouri. In 1982, they moved to Harlan, Iowa. Duane passed
away on April 22, 1990.
Bernice shared her life
as a busy homemaker caring for her family and helping with spring and fall
farm work. As a Licensed Practical Nurse, Bernice worked with Shelby County
Home Health, the Baptist Memorial Home and in private Home Health Care. She
was active for many years in 4-H as a local leader, area judge and as a
member of the 4-H County Committee. Bernice was also active in her church
and as a volunteer for the Myrtue Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Baptist
Memorial Home Auxiliary. She was a member of the Lincoln Social Club and was
a past member of the Pioneer Country Club. Her hobbies included sewing,
quilting, flower gardening, decorating cakes and playing the piano. She also
enjoyed feeding and watching the birds and the squirrels in her back yard.
Bernice’s greatest pleasure was derived from her family and their
activities, including her grandchildren and their school and 4-H activities.
This year marked forty-four consecutive years of 4-H involvement for Bernice
and her family.
Bernice went home to be
with our Lord on Monday, April 19, 2004 having attained the age of
seventy-three years, six months and seventeen days. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Duane and her parents, Emanuel and Margaret.
Bernice is survived by
her children: Dean Linden and his wife, Dr. Deborah of Walnut, Iowa; Sharon
and her husband, Darrel Mathiasen of Harlan, Iowa; Shirley Linden and her
friend, Dennis Tschirren of Omaha, Nebraska; Susan and her husband, Fred
Nelson of Audubon, Iowa; Sarah and her husband, Jack Christensen of North
Mankato, Minnesota; Sally and her husband, Col. James G. Kolling of Beale
Air Force Base, California; Sena Linden of Waterloo, Iowa; and Shawn and her
husband Scott McLaughlin of Defiance, Iowa. Also surviving are her

Prince of Dousman, Wisconsin; Samuel, Jacob and William McLaughlin of
Defiance, Iowa; one great-granddaughter, Kaylie Mathiasen of Omaha,
Nebraska; and one brother, Howard Andersen and his wife, Dorothy of Harlan,
Iowa.
Bernice will be greatly
missed by her many relatives, friends, and neighbors.
Funeral Services were
held on Thursday, April 22, 2004, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan,
Iowa, at 1:30 P.M. with Rev. Gundar Lamberts officiating. Interment was in
the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, with Dean Linden, Darrel Mathiasen,
Fred Nelson, Jack Christensen, Col. James Kolling, Scott McLaughlin, Dennis
Tschirren, Jonathan Troll, Jeppe Nelson, and James Nelson serving as casket
bearers.
Dorothy J. Linden - Age 70
Dorothy Jean Linden, the
daughter of Howard Peter and Myrtle Marie Knudsen
Thomson, was born on March 5, 1934, on a farm in
Cuppy’s Grove, Shelby County, Iowa. She attended
country school and was a member of the graduating
class of 1951 from Harlan Community High School.
Upon graduation from high school, Dorothy was
employed at Farners in Harlan, Iowa and later was a
secretary in the Walnut School System.
On April 16, 1954,
Dorothy was united in marriage to Dewey Linden at the Calvary Baptist Church
in Walnut, Iowa. To this union, four children were born: Gale, Byron, Jody
and Janet. After their marriage, Dewey attended the University of Iowa and
Dorothy worked at the Handicapped School for Children in Iowa City, Iowa.
After Dewey graduated from college, they moved to Marion, Iowa, where she
was a homemaker. They later moved to Elk Horn, Iowa where Dorothy excelled
as a wife, mother and grandmother. She took great pride in taking her
grandchildren to Vacation Bible School or field trips to The Offut Air Force
Museum or other communities where special functions were held. The important
thing she wanted to establish was her relationship with them and for them to
establish relationships with their cousins. This meant that she took care of
several of them at a time. She played bingo with them and rewarded them with
special prizes. Gingerbread houses were always one of the grandchildren’s
favorites. Other interests for Dorothy were sewing, gardening and playing
the piano. After Dewey retired from teaching, Dorothy developed Linden
Mailing Enterprise.
Dorothy died on
Tuesday, November, 30, 2004, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs,
Iowa, having attained the age of seventy years, eight months, and
twenty-five days. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death
by her brothers, Bruce and Clyde Thomson.
Survivors include her
husband of fifty years, Dewey of Elk Horn, Iowa; her children, Gale Linden
and his wife, Alice of Kimballton, Iowa; Byron Linden and his wife, Janet of
Moville, Iowa; Jody and her husband, Dave Jones of Edgerton, Kansas; Janet
and her husband, Phil Graves of White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico;
twenty-one grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn
Thomson of Lawrence, Kansas; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many
friends.
Funeral services were
held on Saturday, December 4, 2004, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Walnut,
Iowa, at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Paul Hutchins officiating. Interment was in
Cuppy’s Grove Cemetery in Rural Harlan, Iowa, with Robert Dierking, Paul
Riley, Horace Graves, Ron Hamilton, Mike Martin, Jerry Hansen, Ralph Hansen
and Harold Lansman serving as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket
bearers were Jacob Graves, Matthew Jones, Brian Harlow, Alan Linden, Mark
Linden, Steve Linden, and Todd Linden.
Douglas William Linden - 79
Douglas William Linden was born on January 24, 1928, to Oscar and Edith (McKeighan)
Linden in Portsmouth, Iowa, and grew up near Tennant, Iowa. Douglas attended
school in Tennant, graduating from high school with the Class of 1945. He
began his farming career shortly after completing his education.
Douglas
was united in marriage to Ellen Sorensen on February 21, 1950, at the
Tennant Methodist Church. Four children were born to this union: Barbara,
Sandra, Mary, and Brian. The family lived near Avoca, Harlan, and Corley,
but mostly near Walnut, where he was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church. He
served as a deacon and trustee for the church until moving to Harlan in
1975. He became a member of First Baptist Church in Harlan on July 8, 1979.
He
enjoyed spending time with his family, taking them on camping trips and
being involved in his grandchildren’s activities. He also loved tending to
his garden and playing with the grandchildren’s dogs.
Douglas
worked at his daughter’s farm after moving to Harlan until his retirement in
1990; although he never truly retired since he was unable to sit still for
long. He continued to help out at the farm and spent lots of time with his
grandchildren. He was a loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather.
Douglas
died unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 7, 2007, having attained the age of
seventy-nine years, six months, and fourteen days. He was preceded in death
by his parents, his children: Barbara, Mary, and Brian; his granddaughter
Angela; and his brothers and sisters: David, Darrell, Esther, Dana, Helen,
Dallas, and Duane.
He is
survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Ellen, of Harlan; his daughter
Sandra and her husband Jeff Lansman of Harlan; three grandchildren: Kris
Lansman and his wife Jen of Le Mars, Iowa; Matt Lansman and Nicole Lansman
both of Harlan; his sister Wilma and her husband Howell McClure of
Kingsfield, Maine; his brother Dewey Linden of Elk Horn, Iowa; nieces,
nephews, and many friends.
A
Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, August 11, 2007, at First Baptist
Church in Harlan, Iowa, with interment at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan,
Iowa. Pastor Gundar Lamberts officiated the 10:30 AM service. Serving as
casket bearers were Gale Linden, Matthew Lansman, Jeff Lansman, Jennifer
Lansman, Kristofer Lansman, and Nicole Lansman.
Roy Victor Linton - Age 92
Roy Victor Linton was born on September 9, 1914, in Chicago,
Illinois, to John and Johanna (Scanlon) Linton and was baptized into the
Presbyterian faith. Roy graduated from high school in Kansas City and
attended junior college until the death of his father when he left school to
help his brothers run their father’s engineering and grain construction
business. He worked as a private contractor for the armed forces before
enlisting in the United States Navy. After his discharge, Roy returned to
Kansas City living with his mother and continued working at various
construction and engineering companies.
On November 30, 1947, Roy was united in marriage to Ruth Blakley in Omaha,
Nebraska. Five children were born to this marriage: Roy II, Mike, John,
Ruthie, and Lola. In 1950, Roy completed his college and received his degree
in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Rolla in Missouri. He then
was employed by Butler Grain out of Kansas City and traveled throughout
South America, Cuba and Central America designing and constructing grain
elevators. Roy and Ruth then decided to establish Harlan as their home in
1959 so their children could attend school in the United States. He
continued working for various engineering firms and traveled throughout the
world until taking a job as Harlan’s City Engineer. In 1977, Roy began work
for the Army Corp of Engineers out of Omaha, Nebraska, who sent him to Korea
and Saudi Arabia. Throughout his career, Roy worked in twenty-seven
countries in all.
Roy was a devoted husband and loving father who instilled the importance of
putting your best effort forward at all times. He was an intelligent man
fascinated by science and weather and would read every newspaper and trade
magazine from cover to cover. He loved spending time with his children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Roy loved big family get togethers
when he could tell his many stories.
Roy died at Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa, on April 14, 2007, having
attained the age of ninety-two years, seven months, and five days. He was
preceded in death by his parents, John and Johanna Linton; his brothers
George and David, sister Sanna, and half brother John.
Roy is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Ruth Linton of Harlan,
Iowa; his children: Roy Linton II of Harlan, Mike and his wife Marcia Linton
of Plymouth, Minnesota, John and his wife Peg Linton of Ft. Calhoun,
Nebraska, Ruthie and her husband Bobby Schaben of Defiance, Iowa, and Lola
Linton of Harlan; six grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 3
step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild, other family members, and
many friends.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 17, 2007, with Pastor Dave
Swinton officiating the 11:00 AM service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in
Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Bobby Schaben, Jarred Behrendt,
Michael Behrendt, Mike Linton, Roy Linton II, Chuck Behrendt, John Linton,
and Nick Schuler. Military Rites were held by Harlan American Legion Helmer
Reyelt Post No. 150 and Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 at the Harlan
Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
Roy V. Linton II - Age 54
Roy
Victor Linton II, the son of Roy and Ruth (Blakely) Linton, was born on
December 24, 1952 in Managua, Nicaragua. He was baptized at First Methodist
Church in Harlan, Iowa and graduated from Harlan Community High School with
the class of 1971.
After
high school, Roy joined the United States Marine Corps. and attended boot
camp in San Diego, California. Following boot camp he was trained as a field
radio operator and deployed with an artillery battery to Okinawa and
Vietnam. Later in life Roy was a dedicated advocate for Veteran’s Rights and
assisted many vets in obtaining the full benefits they deserved.
Following his honorable discharge, Roy lived in many areas of the country.
After attending the University of Iowa, he moved to Los Angeles, California.
Roy loved the time he spent in California where he wrote lyrics and
recorded, composed and performed many of his published songs.
After Los Angeles, Roy lived in Omaha, then Carroll and Fort Dodge, Iowa
where he graduated from college and worked for local newspapers as a
reporter and editor. He then moved to Tennessee and worked at the Gibson
Guitar Factory. Roy also lived in Las Vegas, Nevada where he was employed as
a bounty hunter. In 1997, Roy returned to Iowa and settled in Harlan to be
closer to family. He also spent his time videotaping Cyclone football for
Harlan Cable and continued to perform music while sharing his love of music
by giving guitar lessons. Roy also volunteered his time to animal rescue and
served Christmas meals to the homeless.
Roy was
known for his great sense of humor and endless creativity. He lived in the
moment and taught you to laugh in the face of adversity, throw caution to
the wind, and not to take life so seriously. Roy was a gifted musician who
loved to read and spend time with his family and dogs.
Roy died
on Saturday, July 28, 2007, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa having
attained the age of fifty-four years, seven months, and four days. He is
preceded in death by his father Roy.
He is
survived by his mother Ruth Linton of Harlan, Iowa; his two brothers: Mike
Linton and his wife Marcia of Plymouth, Minnesota and John Linton and his
wife Peg of Fort Calhoun, Nebraska; his two sisters: Ruthie and her husband
Bobby Schaben of Defiance, Iowa and Lola Linton of Harlan; nieces, nephews,
and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 3, 2007 at Pauley Jones Funeral
Home in Harlan, Iowa with interment at the Harlan Cemetery. Pastor Dave
Swinton officiated the 11:00 AM service. Serving as honorary casket bearer
was Steve Quist. Serving as active casket bearers were: Adam Quist, Michael
Behrendt, Nick Schuler, Mike Linton, Chuck Behrendt, Jarred Behrendt, John
Linton, Carol Miles-Rishling, Bobby Schaben and Randy Musich.
Evelyn K. Lippold
Age- 81
Evelyn
Katherine Nelson
Lippold, the daughter of Carl Otto
and Alma Helen (Maassen)
Nelson, was born on
December 27, 1924 in
Valley Township, southeast
of Avoca, Iowa.
She was baptized at the
Lutheran Church in
Avoca. Evelyn attended
country school and
graduated from Avoca
High School in 1943. In
1941, the Avoca girls
basketball team, of
which Evelyn was a
member, qualified for
the State Tournament.
During World War II she
went to Washington,
D.C., and worked for the
FBI reading
fingerprints. She later
was employed for the
National Red Cross.
Evelyn
returned to Avoca in
1947 and did housework
for families
that had sickness or
health problems.
Evelyn and Willis
Lippold were married on
August 12, 1949 in
Avoca. They raised four
children: Steve, Judy,
Dale and Cindy. All the
children helped on the
farm with the haying,
chores, thrashing,
breaking horses and
driving truck for their
Grandpa George. Evelyn
was in charge of all the
cooking, which included
cooking for anyone who
came to work or visit.
When George passed away,
Willis inherited the
buildings and the 60
acres where their family
resided. Evelyn was
employed at the local
steakhouse and bakery
where she cooked lunch
and dinner.
In 1972, Dick Sparrow of
Zearing, Iowa asked
Evelyn and Willis to
help put a 40-horse
hitch together for the
Milwaukee Circus Parade.
They took it on the road
for five years to
parades like the Rose
Bowl, Cotton Bowl,
Indianapolis, Nashville
and New York. Willis was
head horseman and lead
outrider and Evelyn was
head cook for the crew
of 50-75 people. The
horses were sold in 1978
because they had no
sponsor. Willis died on
May 21, 2000.
After the death of her
husband, Evelyn
continued to make her
home on the family farm.
She was a member of the
Trinity Lutheran Church
in Avoca, Country Hobby
Club, Shelby County
Saddle Club and the VFW
Auxiliary. Evelyn
enjoyed cooking and
playing cards,
especially hearts and
rummy. Most recently,
she liked to play word
scrambles and solitaire
on the computer.
In May of 2006, Evelyn
became a resident of the
Atlantic Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center in
Atlantic, Iowa. It was
there that she died on
Tuesday, June 13, 2006,
having attained the age
of eighty-one years,
five months, and
seventeen days. In
addition to her parents
and her husband, Willis,
Evelyn was preceded in
death by her brothers
and sister: Clifford
Nelson, Donald Nelson,
and Annabell Nelson.
Survivors include her
children: Steve Lippold
and his wife, Debbie of
Avoca, Iowa; Judy and
her husband, Fred
Brunner of Ames, Iowa;
Dale Lippold and his
