Wendell Eugene Knauss, son of Clyde and Erma (Daugherty) Knauss, was born on August 29, 1927, northwest of Logan, Iowa. Wendell attended country schools near Logan and attended Logan High School. As a veteran of World War II, he served in Germany with the Army of Occupation. While on leave, Wendell was united in marriage to Doris Jean Plath, also of Logan on December 12, 1945. Five children were born to this union: Richard, Reta, Ronald, Rhonda, and Regena. He was involved in farming in the Logan, Magnolia, and Beebeetown areas for several years. In the early 50's, they moved to Beebeetown where Wendell worked as head of maintenance at the Beebeetown School and continued his work in the newly-consolidated Tri-Center Schools. In 1963, the Knauss family moved to Persia. He became owner and operator of A-OK Sales and Service Hardware Store and continued his employment at Tri-Center until he retired in 1991. After Doris passed away in December 1988, Wendell remained in the Persia area where he continued as a member of the Persia Improvement Club, the American Legion Swanger Post No. 314, Persia Fire Department, serving as Chief, and was on the Board of Directors for the Persia Senior Citizen Housing, and the Board of Directors of the Home Savings Bank of Persia. On April 14, 1990, Wendell married Marilyn Hoien; and they resided in Harlan, where he later became the manager of the Regency Villa Apartments until the fall of 2006. Wendell enjoyed woodworking, spending time with his friends and family, going to Taco Night in Westphalia, and golfing, sitting on the Board of Directors for the Shelby County Golf Course. Wendell died on Friday, October 5, 2007, at Elmcrest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty years, one month, and six days. He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Doris, and his sister Donna Thomas. He is survived by his wife Marilyn of Harlan; his children: Richard Knauss and his wife Marilyn J. of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Reta and her husband Don Lantis of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota; Ronald Knauss and his wife Lucy of Portsmouth, Iowa; Rhonda and her husband Gary Nordby of Logan, Iowa; Regena and her husband Greg Weihs of Harlan; and step-daughter, Jodie Bridges of Ringsted, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother Garry Knauss and his wife Connie of Logan, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 8, 2007, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Donna Ewert officiated the 10:00 AM service. Military Rites were held at Bethel Cemetery in Logan, Iowa with Stephanie Price, Stacey Smith, Kristina Bridges, Brittany Nordby, and Brooke Weihs acting as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were Tim Knauss, Rodney Lantis, Todd Knauss, Brian Knauss, Brad Knauss, Brent Knauss, and Ryan Nordby.
Gordon Dale Knights was born on May 25, 1928, to Rolla and Sylvia (Brown) Knights in Fonda, Iowa. After his graduation from high school, Gordon enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War II with the Eighth Cavalry Regiment in Japan. After his honorable discharge from military service on October 27, 1947, he returned home and was united in marriage to Lyro Ann Barnum on June 25, 1949. Five children were born to this union: Peggy, Gail, Rita, Bill, and Janae. Gordon served as the fire chief in Deloit and worked at Farmland Foods in Denison, Iowa for twenty-five years. He died on Saturday, August 9, 2008, having attained the age of eighty years, two months, and fifteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rolla and Sylvia Knights, his son Bill Knights, and his brothers and sisters: Virgil Knights, Charles Knights, Ruth Knights, Roger Knights, Earl Knights, Richard Knights, Evelyn Trimble, and Doris Seger. Gordon is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years Lyro Knights of Harlan, Iowa; his children: Peggy Knights of Tekamah, Nebraska, Gail Knights and his wife Darla of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Rita Knights of Harlan, and Janae Myers of Harlan; five grandchildren: Jason, Shawn and Denny Knights and Bethany and Sara Pape; one great-grandchild Aiden Knights; his sisters: Fern and her husband Roland Swan of Albany, Oregon and Betty and her husband Gale Abrams of Monmouth, Oregon; and his brother Neal Knights and his wife Sharon of Owatonna, Minnesota. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa with Larry Joe Purcell officiating the 10:00 AM service. Honorary casket bearers were Bethany Pape and Sara Pape. Serving as casket bearers were Gail Knights, Jason Knights, Shawn Knights, Denny Knights, Tim Pauley, and Richard McCoid. Interment was held at the Dow City Cemetery in Dow City, Iowa.

Knudson - 67 John Wallace Knudson, son of J. Wallace and Ila (Andersen) Knudson, was born on August 18, 1940 at the Harlan Hospital in Harlan and baptized at the Altamont Baptist Church in rural Harlan. He was the third generation of his family to complete elementary school at Fairview #1 School and graduated from Harlan High School in 1959. On February 18, 1962, John was united in marriage to Patricia Rasmussen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. Three sons were born to this union: Rodney, Gaige, and Corey. After their wedding, John and Patricia moved south of Corley where they farmed for six years. In 1968, John and Patricia moved west of Avoca where they farmed for an additional six years. Then in 1974, John and Patricia moved onto the Knudson home farm outside of Harlan where they farmed for thirty-three years. During his farming days he also sold seed with DeKalb for twenty years. During his free time, John enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding his motorcycle, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. John was a very active individual and served on numerous committees at the Altamont Baptist Church and on the Corley Community Board for several years. He was an active member at the Altamont Baptist Church and served several terms as trustee. John died on Thursday, August 30, 2007, at Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska having attained the age of sixty-seven years and twelve days. He is preceded in death by his father J. Wallace Knudson. He is survived by his mother, Ila, of Harlan, Iowa; his wife of forty-five years, Patricia, of Harlan; his children: Rodney Knudson and his wife Rhonda, Gaige Knudson and his wife Heather all of Harlan, and Corey Knudson and his wife Kelly of Atlantic; seven grandchildren: Tara, Ethan, Kyle, Austin, Delaney, Josie, and Henry; and one sister, Karen and her husband Jeffrey of West Chester, Pennsylvania; other family members, and many friends. Funeral services were held on Monday, September 3, 2007, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa with Rev. Diana Holland officiating the 10:30 AM service. Interment was held at Cuppy’s Grove Cemetery in Rural Harlan, Iowa, with Neil Ohms, Marty Schuemann, Robert Scheel, Dick Andersen, Brent Rasmussen, and Doug Robinson serving as casket bearers.
Arnold Christian Knudtson, son of Christian and Clara (Krueger) Knudtson, was born on February 11, 1918, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He was baptized and confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in LaCrosse and attended Emmanuel Lutheran School through the eighth grade. He then graduated from Logan High School in LaCrosse with the class of 1936. Arnold continued his education at the Western Wisconsin Business University for two years and was employed as an accountant for Swift & Co. in LaCrosse; Dubuque, Iowa; Beatrice, Nebraska; and Minot, North Dakota. On June 26, 1943, Arnold entered the United States Navy at Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was stationed in the Central Pacific and Okinawa during World War II where he was in the Sea Bees Construction Battalion and was awarded two bronze stars. Arnold was honorably discharged on December 17, 1945, at Great Lakes, Illinois, having attained the rank of Storekeeper First Class. After returning from the service, Arnold continued to work at Swift & Co. in Dubuque and then was transferred to Atlantic, Iowa where he met his future wife, Shirley. On September 6, 1947, Arnold was united in marriage to Shirley Irene Dreager in Atlantic, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Lynn, Lucinda, and Lee. After a year in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Arnold and Shirley moved to Harlan, Iowa, where Arnold was employed as an accountant, office manager at Wilson Seeds in Harlan. He later became a partner and continued to work there for thirty-four years. When Arnold wasn’t busy working, he enjoyed traveling with Shirley to many areas including: Germany, Austria, England, and all the states in the Union; collecting stamps; forecasting the weather; playing cards, especially solitaire; and watching sports, in particular the Harlan football and basketball games where he was a frequent spectator. Arnold also raised raspberries and strawberries and made rhubarb wine. His strawberry patch was in the backyard where the kids could pick them for Lynn to sell. Arnold loved spending time in the garden especially when the grandchildren were with him. Arnold was also an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. Arnold became a resident at the Alzheimer Unit at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan on July 3, 2007 and it was there that he died on Thursday, June 11, 2009, having attained the age of ninety-one years and four months. He is preceded in death by his parents and his mother-in-law. He is survived by his wife Shirley, of sixty-one years, of Harlan; their children Lynn Knudtson and his wife Maria; Lee Knudtson and his wife Cathy; and Cindy and her husband John Masters all of Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren: Brian (Amy) Knudtson, Katie (Chris) Saab, Andrew and Emily Masters and Peter Knudtson all of Omaha and Christopher Knudtson of Lawrence, Kansas ; four great-grandchildren: Madelynn, Lillian and Natalia Knudtson and Brenden Saab all of Omaha; a special cousin Catherine Gunn of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; other family members and many friends. Funeral Services were held on Monday, June 15, 2009, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Heather Ploen officiated the 10:30 Am service with interment at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. Acting as honorary casket bearers were: Doris Towne, Charles and Ester Gearhart, Forrest and Dorothy Petersen, Georgene Peters, Marvin Miller, and Nels Block, Jr. Serving as casket bearers were: Brian Knudtson, Katie Saab, Christopher Knudtson, Peter Knudtson, Andrew Masters and Emily Masters.
John H. Kock -
Age 86 John Henry Koch, the son of Henry and Minnie Hartje Koch, was born on October 30, 1921 on the family farm southeast of Neola. He attended country school in York township until the eighth grade. John then went to work with his father on the family farm. John was united in marriage to Vonda Schories on August 20, 1950 at Minden Congregational Church. To this union three children were born: Sheila, Robert and Timothy. John farmed his whole life on the family farm raising cattle, hogs, chickens, milking cows and raising a large garden along with raising corn, beans, oats, hay and wheat. John was part of many baling, thrashing and corn shelling crews. John’s hobbies were few but he enjoyed watching a good ball game, and going to sale barns and auctions. He was very kindhearted and many called him Johnny. John passed away at the home of his birth on Monday, September 15, 2008 having attained the age of eighty-six years, ten months and sixteen days. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters: Alice Koch, Esther Trede and Hazel Trede. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of fifty-eight years, Vonda; his children: Sheila and her husband Chris Pederson; Robert Koch and his wife Cindy and Timothy Koch and his wife Doreen, of Neola, Iowa; three grandchildren: Nancy Koch and her friend Craig; Brenda Koch; Brenda Lee and her husband Charlie Vogl; step grandchildren: John Hansen; Clint Hansen and Andrea Hansen; two great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; sister Lucille Zach of Council Bluffs, Iowa; special friend Jim Pope; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the Minden United Church of Christ in Minden, Iowa with burial at the Minden Cemetery. Serving as Honorary bearers were Jim Pope, Ronnie Kay and Walt Ausdemore with Ted Trede, Clint Hansen, Tom Trede, Charlie Vogl, John Hansen and Tom Schories as the active bearers.
Margaret "Mary" Kock - Age 77
Louis C. Koesters - Age 93 Louis Casper Koesters was born on April 20, 1913, to Robert and Theresa (Schneider) Koesters in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling where he also attended St. Joseph's Catholic School. He then began helping his father on the farm which led to his own farming career. Louis was united in marriage to Josephine Mueller on February 20, 1941, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Ten children were born to this union: Philip, Julie, Robert, June, Norene, John, Mitzi, Luke, Mark, and Matthew. They farmed outside of Westphalia until 1946 when they moved to a farm outside of Earling. This is where Louis and Josephine raised their family and farmed. Louis also did custom corn shelling for area farmers for several years. Louis retired in 1979 when his son John took over. He and his wife stayed on the farm until 1999 when they moved into Earling after purchasing his sister’s house. Louis was a man of great faith and was very involved at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where he was a lifetime member. He was also an Honorary Life Member of the Earling Knights of Columbus Council No. 1741, having been a member for sixty-nine years. He enjoyed family get togethers and spending time with all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After Josephine’s death in 2003, Louis moved to Harlan and became a resident at Elm Crest Assisted Living. He died at the health care unit on Wednesday, April 18, 2007, having attained the age of ninety-three years, eleven months, and twenty-nine days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Theresa Koesters, his wife Josephine who died exactly four years prior, and his brothers and sisters: Valeria, Richard, Art, Nettie, Norbert, Frank, Betty, Gabriella, and two grandchildren Greg, and Jackie Klein. He is survived by his children: Phil Koesters and his wife Jolene of Harlan, Iowa, Julie and her husband Dick Klein of Earling, Iowa, Robert Koesters and his wife JoAnn of Earling, June and her husband Greg Schmidt of Omaha, Nebraska, Norene and her husband Robert Schechinger of Panama, Iowa, John Koesters of Earling, Mitzi and her husband Al LeClair, Luke Koesters and his wife Debbie, Mark Koesters and his wife Adrian, all of Omaha, and Matthew Koesters and his wife Rose of Earling; forty-one grandchildren; fifty-two great-grandchildren; other family members, and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 21, 2007, with Rev. Tom Coenen serving as celebrant in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Casket bearers were Phil Koesters, Robert Koesters, John Koesters, Luke Koesters, Mark Koesters, and Matthew Koesters. Interment was held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling, Iowa.
Celestine "Sally" Kohles -
Age 86 Celestine "Sally" Kohles was born June 26, 1920, to George and Mary (Siemer) Arkfeld in Panama, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. Sally graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama and spent one year in college in Atchison, Kansas. Sally was united in marriage on June 18, 1941, to Delbert Kohles at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Eight children were born to this union: Gary, Karen, Carol, Jerome "Speed", Michael, Joe, Ron, and Jo Ann. Following their wedding, the couple returned to Illinois until October 25, 1944, when Delbert was drafted into the United States Army. After his honorable discharge, Delbert accepted a job with Pauley Furniture, and they relocated to Harlan, Iowa, for a short time before purchasing a café and tavern in Panama. The establishment, known as Kohles Café, kept Sally busy making homemade pies and dinners every day. Delbert and Sally operated the café until 1963, when they moved to San Bruno, California, where Delbert was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. While living in California, Sally worked for Skyline Donut Shop in San Bruno and the Lake Merced Country Club in San Francisco before accepting a position at Skyline Community College in San Bruno. The couple returned to Iowa and made their home in Panama after Delbert’s retirement in 1977. Sally then worked as a cook for the Gold Slipper in Dunlap, Iowa, until her retirement. Sally was a great cook and loved to bake bread. She also enjoyed quilting and made many hand-stitched quilts. In 2004, Sally became a resident of the Elm Crest Assisted Living facility in Harlan. Sally died on Monday, March 26, 2007, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-six years and nine months. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Delbert, three brothers: Archbishop Leo Arkfeld, Vince Arkfeld, and Clem Arkfeld, and three sisters: Florence Ohlinger, Lucille Arkfeld, and Mary Arkfeld. Sally is survived by her children: Gary and his wife Beverly Kohles of Portsmouth, Iowa; Karen and her husband Alf Wingert of Panama, Iowa; Carol and her husband Phil Wegner of Panama; Jerome "Speed" and his wife Connie Kohles of Harlan, Iowa; Michael and his wife Janet Kohles of Rancho Cordova, California; Joe and his wife Janet Kohles of Panama; Ron and his wife Meg Kohles of Panama; and Jo Ann and her husband Joseph "Jay" Townsend of Wawa, Pennsylvania; thirty-one grandchildren; fifty-three great-grandchildren; two sisters: Rita and her husband John Kelley of Woodbine, Iowa and Sylvia and her husband Jerry Bissen of Earling, Iowa; and one brother George and his wife Josephine Arkfeld of Oceanside, California; nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, March 28, 2007. Rev. John Dorton officiated the 11:00 AM service at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were John Kohles, Dan Wingert, Jeff Kohles, David Kohles, Steve Wegner, Dennis Kohles, Robert Wegner, Joe Townsend, Marvin Kohles, Glenn Wingert, Patrick Kohles, and John Townsend. Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Panama.

Kohles - Age 70 Rodger died on Monday, October 19, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Hospital West in Lake St. Louis, Missouri, having attained the age of seventy years, eight months, and twenty-six days. He is preceded in death by his parents. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Earling, Iowa, on Saturday, October 24, 2009. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth of O Fallon, Missouri; his children: Mark Kohles of Roland Park, Kansas; Geri and her husband Scott Berdak of New York, New York; Scott Kohles and his wife Dawn of St. Louis, Missouri; his brother Ron Kohles and his wife Norma of Omaha, Nebraska; and his sister Mary Lou Schimerowski of Earling, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
Iona V. Koos - Age 92 Iona Verlee Koos was born on June 28, 1916, to Joseph and Mary (Custer) Noble in Kirkman, Iowa. She graduated with the Class of 1933 from Harlan High School. On March 11, 1936, she was united in marriage to Ervin J. J. Koos in Walnut, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: David, Karen, and Kathleen. Iona and Ervin farmed together for forty-four years, the last thirty years spent on the family farm south of Shelby. They retired from farming in 1980 and in 1996 made their home at Peace Haven in Walnut, Iowa. After the death of her husband on September 2, 2004, Iona continued to reside at Peace Haven where she lived for twelve years. Iona died on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-two years, eight months, and eleven days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son-in-law Jon Kasner, brother Harry, and sisters Orpha, Mae, and Lotus. Iona kept busy with her children, serving as a 4-H leader and on the Pottawattamie County 4-H committee. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and held most offices of the Women’s Auxiliary. She served as Matron of the Eastern Star organization, was an honorary member of Myrtue Hospital’s Auxiliary, having served as a board member, and was past president of Iowa Association of Conservation District Commissioner’s Auxiliary. Iona found time to bake her "world famous" chocolate chip cookies and had a real stinker of a collection. What else do you call hundreds of skunks? She was an avid game player: games, cards, but especially Scrabble. She is survived by her children: David Koos and his wife Kay of Chandler, Arizona, Karen Kasner of Crofton, Maryland, and Kathleen and her husband Larry Kock of Walnut, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Jon Kasner, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Poolsville, Maryland, Nancy Kasner of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Matt Kasner and his wife Jeanne of Crofton, Maryland, Tom Koos and his wife Debbie of Coto de Caza, California, Todd Koos and his wife Raquel of Pineville, North Carolina, Katie (Kock) and her husband Bryan Wright of Omaha, Nebraska, Charles Kock and his wife Sarah of Walnut, Iowa, and Chris Kock of Sacramento, California; sixteen great-grandchildren: Kevin, Michael, Stephanie, Colin, Timothy, Ryan and Jon Kasner; Ashley, Kyle, Trevor, Caris, McKenzie, and Joshua Koos; Emma and Megan Kock; and Isaac Wright; other family members and friends. A funeral service was held on Saturday, March 14, 2009 with Pastor Dennis Reich officiating the 2:30 PM service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Casket bearers were Matt Kasner, Jon Kasner, Jr., Chris Kock, Todd Koos, Charles Kock, and Tom Koos. Interment was held at the Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa.
Alice I. Kraetsch - Age 79
Leonard F. Kramer - Age 78 Leonard Francis Kramer was born on February 21, 1930 on the family farm near Earling, Iowa, to Joseph and Eleanor (Assmann) Kramer. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Earling, graduating with the Class of 1948. After completing high school, he began farming with his brother Joseph (Jack) near Earling. On September 13, 1950, he was united in marriage to Marie Bissen at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Four children were born to this union: Joe, Leonard, Karen, and Ron. In 1976, he ended his farming career and became the owner of the Circle K Bar in Earling. He operated that bar until 1983 when he went to work at The Turf Lounge in Omaha, Nebraska with his brother Leo. Leonard was married to Anna Mae Hansen on July 9, 1988, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. He remained a member of St. Michael’s. He loved growing up on the farm and especially enjoyed animals. He liked to watch horse racing and playing cards. His favorite games were Pitch and 500. He was a great bartender and made many friends over the years. Leonard became a member of Little Flower Haven in Earling in February of 2004. He died at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan on Saturday, December 6, 2008, having attained the age of seventy-eight years, nine months, and fifteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson Joseph, Jr., brothers and sisters: Joseph, Albert, Marie, and Alphons "Mike". He is survived by his wife Anna Kramer of Harlan, Iowa; his children: Joe Kramer and his wife Janice of Westphalia, Iowa, Leonard Kramer and his wife Joyce of Surprise, Arizona, Karen and her husband Frank "Rocket" Herning of Harlan, Ron Kramer and his wife LuAnn of Earling; his step-son David Hansen and his wife Denise of Harlan; eleven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Margaret Klein of Harlan, Leo Kramer and his wife Marjorie of Omaha, Nebraska, and Robert Kramer and his wife Marjorie of Harlan; other family members and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, with Rev. Tom Coenen leading the 11:00 AM service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Concelebrant was Msgr. Gerry Stessman. Homilist was Rev. Mr. Pat Davitt. Casket bearers were Michael Kramer, Dan Schumacher, Joey Hansen, Kent Bushnell, Jeff Garrison, and Larry Klein with interment held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling.
Marcus Aloysius Kramer was born on February 11, 1931, to Carl and Marie (Feldman) Kramer, in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. He received his schooling at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Earling and graduated with the Class of 1949. After graduation, Mark worked for area farmers as a hired man. On March 16, 1953, he was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from active duty on December 29, 1954, and remained in the Army Reserves. Mark was united in marriage to Mary Ann Fuhs on February 15, 1955, six weeks after his return from service. Six children were born to this union: Dennis, Jolene, Joan, Dave, Judy, and Doug. The family lived and farmed in the Portsmouth, Irwin and Manilla areas, before settling back on the Kramer family farm in Earling in 1966. He and Bernie Leinen, along with their sons, operated a siding business over the years. He could always be found coaching his kids in baseball; either from the dugout or from the stands. In time, it was his grandchildren that he would be found playing catch with. He would also put together puzzles or do anything to spend time with them. The television always seemed to stop on a sports channel or a good western. Mark was a Fourth Degree past Grand Knight with the Earling Council No. 1741 of the Knights of Columbus. He served on the St. Joseph’s school board, Earling city council, Earling Development Corporation, St. Joseph’s parish board, and as a past Commander of the American Legion Post No. 615 of Earling. Mark died on November 2, 2007, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-six years, eight months, and twenty-two days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Dennis, and his brother Norman. He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Mary Ann Kramer of Earling, Iowa, his children: Jolene and her husband Jim Davis of Harlan, Iowa, Joan and her husband Danny Travis of Harlan, Dave Kramer and his wife Lois of Earling, Judy and her husband Mike Evers of Earling, and Doug Kramer and his wife Stef of Earling; twelve grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Ralph Kramer and his wife Eula of Portsmouth, Iowa, Mildred and her husband Nick Heese of Earling, Helen and her husband Bernard Leinen of Harlan, Alma and her husband Rich Leinen of Portsmouth, Stella Lefeber of Portsmouth, Jeanette Kramer of Harlan, Marie and her husband Don Pemberton of Kansas, and Irene Lefeber of Portsmouth, nieces and nephews, other family members, and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, November 5, 2007, with Rev. Tom Coenen acting as celebrant and Rev. Bob Hoefler as concelebrant of the 11:00 AM service. Honorary casket bearers were Ralph Kramer, Don Pemberton, Bernard Leinen, Richard Leinen, and Nick Heese. Serving as casket bearers were Jim Davis, Danny Travis, Mike Evers, Randy Leinen, Tom Lefeber, Ron Heese, and Danny Pemberton. Military Rites were held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling.

Krantz
- Age 86 Bernice Adele Krantz, the daughter of Sidney and Ella (Husmann) Hulsebus, was born on July 17, 1920, on her family’s farm near Defiance, Iowa. Her family later moved into Defiance and she attended the Defiance Public School. On September 20, 1937, Bernice was united in marriage to Walter Krantz in Harlan, Iowa. Two children were born to this union: Gerald and Richard. After their marriage, they made their home at various farms in the Shelby county area. They then moved to St. Charles, Minnesota, where they farmed and also owned and operated The Cozy Café where she was an excellent cook. In 1957, Bernice and Walter returned to Iowa where they again made Harlan their home. In 1970, Bernice attended nurses college at Iowa Western Community College in Harlan and received her license as a practical nurse. After graduation, she was employed at what was then known as the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan where she worked for several years. She was a dedicated wife and loving mother. She devoted much of her time to St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan where she was a long time member. Bernice became a resident of the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan in November of 2006 and this is where she died on Friday, April 6, 2007, having attained the age of eighty-six years, eight months and twenty days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, her son, Richard; her great grandson, Payton and three brothers: Oliver "Ollie" Hulsebus, Stan Hulsebus and Ed Hulsebus. She is survived by her son Gerald "Jerry" Krantz of Rochester, Minnesota; her four grandchildren: Cindy Ochoa, Nancy Krantz, Rick Krantz, and Debbie Miller; seven great grandchildren; her brother Douglas Hulsebus and his wife Kathy of Tulsa, Oklahoma; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, April 10, 2007, with Rev. Bob Hoefler officiating the 11:00 AM service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Joey Hansen, Henry Scheffler, Dan Garrison, Jeff Garrison, Steve Henkleman, and Steve Hulsebus. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.

Helen
Kremer - Age 87 Helen Kremer was born on March 15, 1920, in Webb, Iowa. She was orphaned as a baby and placed in an orphanage in eastern Iowa. When she was nine years old, she was cared for by Fred and Lydia Honeywell and was raised in Persia, Iowa, where she attended school. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa, and rode to church for several years with Marvin and Helen Bissen and Fred and Grace Dreher. On February 20, 1939, Helen was united in marriage to Clarence Kremer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Three children were born to this union: Charlotte, Terry, and Bernard. After their marriage, Helen and Clarence farmed in the Harrison and Shelby County areas for many years. Helen was a homemaker whose specialty was baking pies. She would make them for her friends, family, and even her doctor who absolutely loved them. She would also embroider quilt blocks for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan for many years. Helen died on Sunday, November 25, 2007, at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-seven years, eight months, and ten days. She is preceded in death by her husband Clarence and her son Terry. She is survived by her daughter Charlotte and her husband Harvey Leinen of Harlan, Iowa, her son Bernie Kremer and his wife Teresa of Council Bluffs, Iowa; her daughter-in-law Janice Kremer of Manassas, Virginia; five grandchildren: Julie, Tracy, Scott, Gregory, and Kristen; and five great-grandchildren: Joshua Kremer, Kelsey, Derek, Haley, and Macie Leinen; nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, November 28, 2007, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Rev. Bob Hoefler was the celebrant of the 11:00 AM mass. Casket bearers were David Kohles, Dennis Kohles, "Speed" Kohles, Scott Leinen, Tim Kremer, and Derek Leinen with interment held at the Harlan Cemetery.
Donald Dean Krohn, son of Orval and Pearl (Schunning) Krohn, was born on March 1, 1936 in Minden, Iowa. Donald later attended Avoca High School in Avoca, Iowa and graduated with the class of 1954. After high school, Donald joined the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War. On October 19, 1958, Donald was united in marriage to Rosalie Miller at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Together they were the parents of two daughters Sheri and Shelly. After his discharge on December 31, 1962, Donald worked at the VanNostrand Grain Company. He later worked for the United States Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector and also at the Wings America Travel Center in Avoca. Donald enjoyed golfing, trips to the casino, traveling, eating out with friends, spending time with his grandkids and attending their sporting games and activities. He was also a member of the Avoca American Legion Post No. 227. Donald retired on November 22, 1997 and remained in Avoca. He was admitted to the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center on December 31, 2009 and it is here that he died on January 1, 2010, having attained the age of seventy-three years, and ten months. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Joyce True. Donald is survived by his wife Rosalie of Avoca, Iowa; daughters Sheri Netz of Bellevue, Nebraska and Shelly and her husband Duane McDonald of Persia, Iowa; five grandchildren: Candice, Bobbyrose, Austin, Emma and Ashley; and two great-grandchildren Emma and Elle; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Pastor Dennis Reich officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Monday, January 4, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Kyle Rock, Dave Schueman, Jim Sulhoff, Bob McCarthy, Richie Nielsen, and Kurt Petersen. The Avoca American Legion Post No. 227 performed military rites.
Harold Krohn -
Age 80 Harold Victor Krohn was born on June 30, 1929, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Albert and Hilda Lily (Dau) Krohn. He was baptized and confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa, where he remained a lifelong member. Harold graduated from the Hancock High School with the Class of 1949. After he completed his education, he began his farming career with his mother in Hancock. They also ran a successful cow/calf operation. Harold also enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. As long as the sun was shining, Harold was happy! Harold retired from farming in 1996. He also became a resident of the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, that same year. In 2005, Harold moved to the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center. It was there that he died on Sunday, December 20, 2009, having attained the age of eighty years, five months, and twenty days. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sister Betty and her husband Willis Maassen of Avoca, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends. The 11:30 AM funeral service was presided over by Rev. Tom Williamson of Aseracare Hospice and Wayne Paulsen on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Bruce Maassen, Richard Maassen, Dustin Maassen, Jeff Maassen, Curtis Maassen, and Roger Maassen. Interment was held in Graceland Cemetery in Avoca, Iowa.
Phyllis E. Krueger - Age 72 Phyllis Elaine Krueger was born on January 16, 1937, in Exira, Iowa, to Marion and Lelia (Lile) Wolf. She was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Exira, Iowa. She attended school in Exira and graduated with the Class of 1955. She was united in marriage to George Krueger on December 26, 1960 in Marne, Iowa. Five children were born to this union: Julie, David, Diane, Kim, and Karmen. She was a homemaker for many years. When the kids got older, she worked at Oakland Manor Nursing Home, The Hub Steakhouse, The Sirloin Cellar, and Gress’ Locker. Phyllis was an active member of the Hancock Methodist Church and the Hancock Auxiliary. She devoted much of her time to the Hancock ball shack, helping with Old Settler’s, and was a 4-H leader for many years. Her greatest joy was her children and grandchildren. Phyllis died on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, having attained the age of seventy-two years and four days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, her sister Vivian and her brothers Donald and Gerald. She is survived by her children: Julie and her husband Dan Buckelew of Treynor, Iowa, David Krueger and his wife Tracy of Underwood, Iowa, Diane and her husband Brian Arnett of Arvada, Colorado, Kim and her husband Paul Wise of Avoca, Iowa, and Karmen and her husband Jeff Weddle of Dallas Center, Iowa; her grandchildren: Mike and Ryan Buckelew of Treynor, Austin, Dalton, and Tayler Krueger of Underwood, Tom and Michael Arnett of Arvada, Matthew, Jessica, Katie, and Megan Wise of Avoca, and Abby, Jon, and Ellie Weddle of Dallas Center; brothers and sisters: Juanita Christiansen of Atlantic, Iowa, Arnold Wolf of Shelby, North Carolina, Ronald Wolf of Boise, Idaho, Ethel and her husband Donald Smith of Atlantic, Iowa, Gloria and her husband Larry Olsen of Oakland, Iowa; and sisters-in-law Peggy Koontz of Corning, Iowa and Nancy Rivers of Sun City, Arizona; other family members and many friends. A funeral service was held at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa, on Friday, January 23, 2009 with Pastor Melissa Drake leading the 10:30 AM service. Casket bearers were: Dirk Brotherson, Donnie Wolf, Darwin Brockman, Mark Smith, Ivan Wolf, Todd Ehlers, Paul Harder, and Jeff Gress. Interment was held at the Layton Township Cemetery in rural Walnut, Iowa.
Hilda Henrietta Rock Krummel, the daughter of Henry V. and Bertha Plautz Rock, was born on August 12, 1912, in Knox Township on the family farm. Hilda attended country school across the road from her home. She usually ran home for lunch but thought it would be great fun to carry a lunch pail like the other kids. Once in a while her mother would surprise her and pack her a lunch pail. She graduated from Avoca High School in 1928. Hilda was united in marriage to Rhinhardt (Jim) Krummel on January 15, 1930. They started their married life on the family farm seven miles southwest of Avoca in Pleasant Township. They were blessed with five children: Delbert Dean, Willis Rhinhardt, Bonnie Lou, Myrna Mae and Shirley Jean. Hilda was a 4-H leader for ten years, a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Avoca, active in TLCW. Hilda and Rhinhardt continued farming until 1958 retiring to their home in Avoca. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Business Women, Historical Society and numerous card clubs. She enjoyed her garden and flowers, needlework, ceramics and playing cards. She took several tours to various places which she enjoyed. Hilda entered the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in January 2000 where she resided until her death on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 having attained the age of ninety-five years, two months and nineteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Rhinhardt, who died on August 3, 1960; one son Willis; sons-in-law: Jimmy Kardell and Ernest Fritz; great grandson Daniel Henning; brothers and sisters: Ella Sieh, Alma Pattee, Arnold Rock, Lola Carroll, Leonard Rock, Herbert Rock, Carl Rock, Bertha Boettger, Ina Burmeister, Edna McKinney and Oscar Rock. Survivors include her children: Delbert Krummel and his wife Delores of Hancock, Iowa; JoAnn (Mrs. Willis) Krummel of Avoca, Iowa; Bonnie Kardell of Avoca, Iowa; Myrna and her husband Melvin Nelsen of Shelby, Iowa and Shirley Fritz of Council Bluffs, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren; forty-five great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 10:30 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Steven Nelsen, John Krummel, Chris Lang, Greg Lang, Dennis Krummel and Dale Kardell. Interment was held in the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.
Lillian "Lilly" Kuster - Age 78 Lilly Kuster was born on May 8, 1929, to John and Mary (Shir) Chalupa in Omaha, Nebraska, one of seven children in that family. She attended Omaha public schools and graduated from South High School in Omaha with the Class of 1947. After her schooling, she worked at Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company and enjoyed going to the dances at Peony Park in Omaha. It was there that she met the love of her life, Robert. On April 11, 1957, Lilly was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Kuster in St. Joseph, Missouri. Four beautiful daughters were born to this union: Cindy, Linda, Sheila, and Terri. Lilly became a housewife to stay home with her children and perfected her cooking skills. Her specialty was potato salad and people asked her to bring it to graduations, picnics, and other special events. Her favorite time of year was Christmas when she baked all kinds of cookies. Lilly was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church for fifty years, serving as a lay worker, a hostess, and helping with the Ladies Aid. She also enjoyed playing the piano and the accordion. Lilly was expressive and creative which showed in the many crafts that she made and the sewing that she did. She also loved to crochet and made hundreds of afghans for her children, grandchildren, friends, and even some of her nurses. She was a doll collector and made many outfits for her dolls. She enjoyed shopping and loved to buy Avon jewelry and was a favorite customer of the Schwan’s Man. Lilly adored her grandchildren and spent all the time she could with them and then her great-grandchildren. She was especially proud of her and Robert celebrating their golden wedding anniversary this year. Lilly was admitted to Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital on November 2, 2007, and it was there that she died on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, having attained the age of seventy-eight years, six months, and five days. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary, her infant son Robert, her grandson Jeremy, and her brothers and sisters: John, Stanley, Ed, Anne Marie, Eleanor, and Mary Ann. She is survived by her husband of fifty years, Bob Kuster of Persia, Iowa; her daughters: Cindy Thygesen of Omaha, Nebraska, Linda and her husband Doug Daringer of Harlan, Iowa, Sheila Carroll of Harlan, and Terri and her husband Craig Daringer of Persia; nine grandchildren: Laura, Michelle, Dustin, Nathen, Amber, Ben, Brent, Darin, and Tyler; four great-grandchildren: Carter, Owen, Liam, and Jackson; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends. A funeral service was held on Saturday, November 17, 2007, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Persia, Iowa, with Rev. Duane Anunson officiating the 10:30 AM service. Casket bearers were Dustin Daringer, Tyler Daringer, Nathen Kuster, Brent Daringer, Darin Daringer, Ben Carroll, and Adam Peters. Interment was held at the Valley View Cemetery in Persia.

Kutnink - Age 72 Donald Dean Kutnink was born on December 17, 1934, in Walnut, Iowa, to John and Edna (Jensen) Kutnink. He was baptized at the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut and attended the Walnut Schools, graduating with the Class of 1953. On June 3, 1956, Don was united in marriage to Karen Dee Westernburg in the Griswold Methodist Church in Griswold, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Donald Kenton, Sunny Jo, Robert Dean, and John William. After their marriage, they lived for a short while in Council Bluffs and then Griswold. In March of 1957, they moved to a farm near Walnut where they were members of the Walnut Presbyterian Church. Six years later they moved to a farm north of Irwin and joined the Irwin United Methodist Church. In 1969, they had a farm sale and moved into Irwin later that year. Besides farming, Don worked at Western Engineering in Harlan and Farm Service Co-op in Irwin. He also operated his own shop for a while. Don had many talents, including carpentry and rebuilt his home adding new rooms. He had a huge garden that he loved to work in. Don had been a member of the Irwin Fire and Rescue, Greenridge Steam and Gas Antique Club, and had assisted the Irwin High School FFA. He will be remembered for his generosity to his friends and neighbors. Don died at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Sunday, January 14, 2007, having attainted the age of seventy-two years and twenty-eight days. He is preceded in death by his wife, Karen, and his father. Don is survived by his mother, Edna Kutnink of Walnut, Iowa, his children: Kent and his wife Terri Kutnink of Farmington, Minnesota, Sunny Jo and her husband David Anderson of Amelia Court House, Virginia, Robert Kutnink of Emerson, Iowa, and John and his wife Lucille Kutnink of Cambridge, Nebraska; one sister, Rosemary and her husband Louis Pedersen of Walnut, Iowa, seven grandchildren: Jonathan, Jason, Kristin, Thomas, Timothy, Scott, and Amber, and one great-grandchild, Hannah Grace; nieces and nephews, and many friends. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Irwin, Iowa, with Rev. Keith Pals officiating the 10:30 AM service. Casket bearers were Tim Kutnink, Jonathan Kutnink, Tom Kutnink, Scott Kutnink, Jason Kutnink, and Amber Kutnink. Interment was held at the Emerson Cemetery in Emerson, Iowa, with Rev. Glenn Rankin presiding over the graveside service.

Kwapiszeski - Age 97 Josephine Marie Kwapiszeski, daughter of William and Josephine (Rosenthal) Schulte, was born on March 19, 1912, in Bloomfield, Nebraska. After her mother’s death in 1914, the family moved to Westphalia, Iowa. It was there that her father married his sister-in-law, Anna Rosenthal. Josephine graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia in 1931. She received her teacher’s certificate the following summer and began teaching country school for five years in Cass and Shelby Counties. On June 22, 1937, Josephine was united in marriage to Raymond Michael Kwapiszeski at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Two children were born to this union; JoAnn who married Jerry Lapke and Ralph who married Janet Arkfeld. After their wedding, they farmed near Panama, Iowa, until Ray’s death in 1957. In the fall of 1960, Josephine went back to teaching at a country school. The next year, she started teaching fifth grade at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama, Iowa, in the little white school house. She continued to teach there for six years, before moving over to teach third grade at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama, Iowa. She stayed in that position until her retirement in 1978. Josephine was an avid reader, especially when it came to current events. She was very active in the church and community. She was a lector, communion minister, and a long time choir member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama and took part in the community chorus plays for many years. She was also the president of the Home and School Organization, the Rosary Society, the sewing circle, and the Senior Citizens organization. She was also a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Katherine Court No. 266 of Earling, Iowa, where she also held the position of secretary. Josephine conducted tours for groups who visited the church in Panama, giving its history. Josephine died on Sunday, November 22, 2009, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-seven years, eight months, and three days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray; her siblings: Cecelia, Frances, Ellen, Lawrence, John, Helen, Raymond, Howard, and Bernice. She is survived by her children: JoAnn and her husband Jerry Lapke of Harlan, Iowa; Ralph Kwapiszeski and his wife Janet of Overland Park, Kansas; twelve grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; her sisters Alice Carey of Harlan; Theresa Blum of Walnut, Iowa; Agnes and her husband Leo Gaul of Harlan; her brother Paul Schulte and his wife Agnes of Carroll, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrating the 11:00 AM service.
