Virginia "Jinny"
Kerr - Age 84
Virginia "Ginny"
Leigh Kerr, the daughter of John E. and Grace H.
Hunt Lundborg, was born on November 26, 1921, at
Omaha, Nebraska. She was baptized and confirmed at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church on April 9, 1941. Ginny
attended school at Omaha, and graduated from North
High in 1939. She then attended Omaha University,
UNO, and obtained a Teacher’s Certificate. She
volunteered at schools and hospitals following her
college education.
Virginia’s life was a thread connecting her family
across four generations. Living through the
depression and subsequent world war provided first
hand experience to the history enveloping a country
and world, a history she would enjoy reading and
talking about throughout her life.
On June 28, 1941, Ginny
was united in marriage to Maximilian Kerr at St.
Philip Neri at Omaha, Nebraska. Four children were
born to this union: John, Brian, Julie, and Alan.
Seventeen years later when her marriage ended,
Virginia faced her next challenge, being a single
mother. Ginny raised her four children with the help
of her parents. She was strict but always fair,
protective and kind. Then her thread wove together a
family of three generations. Virginia’s strong
belief in the Catholic doctrine and attendance of
church provided the very strength from which mothers
learn to stand up for their children.
Ginny enjoyed the violin and learned how to play at
a very young age and continued those studies through
college. Her appreciation for classical music grew
to also include an appreciation for Big Band music.
She loved to read, especially old western novels,
National Geographic, autobiographies of historical
figures, World War II, the Depression Era, Civil War
and the Revolutionary War. Ginny enjoyed watching
old movies, anything from Cary Grant to Doris Day,
Frank Sinatra to John Wayne and old war movies. She
loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren
and great grandchildren; they were her life and she
relished in all of their triumphs. Ginny will always
be remembered as a kind hearted person who never
complained even when she was feeling her worst. Her
great-grandchildren, too young to remember her, will
be told of a kind, loving woman, who never wanted
people to fuss over her, of a life that ended with
the quiet dignity embraced by many of her
generation, especially from the heartlands of this
country where kindness and quiet dignity are passed
along from generation to generation. This is the
thread of Virginia’s life and one that the family
will keep with them as they live their lives.
Virginia died on Monday, January 23, 2006, at her
daughter’s home in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the
age of eighty-four years, one month and twenty-seven
days. In addition to her parents, her husband,
Maximilian, Ginny was preceded in death by a
grandson, Todd Johnson.
Survivors include her children: John Kerr of Bradley
Beach, New Jersey; Brian Kerr and his life partner,
Don of Washington DC; Julie and her husband, John
Johnson of Harlan, Iowa; Alan Kerr and his wife,
Caren of Rohrersville, Maryland; four grandchildren:
Jeffrey Johnson and his wife, Annie of Dunlap, Iowa;
Katharyn Johnson of Los Angeles, California; Amanda
Kerr and Evan Kerr of Rohrersville, Maryland; two
great-grandchildren: Alexander Todd Johnson and
Gracie Jo Johnson of Dunlap, Iowa; many nieces,
nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Kathleen L.
Kleinpaste - Age 80
Kathleen was born
on June 10, 1925 on her grandparent’s farm in
Cuppy’s Grove, IA. She was the daughter of Neil Berg
and Nellie (Nelson) Berg and the sister of Marlin
(Bud), John and Robert. Her family moved to Clarks
Grove, MN shortly after she was born and her father
became pastor of the Clarks Grove Baptist Church.
She was an honor student at Albert Lea High School.
Kathleen married Harold Kleinpaste on August 5,
1942. Their marriage thrived for sixty three
wonderful years and together, they raised four
children, participated in community and church
activities and traveled extensively throughout the
world.
Kathleen first began working outside the home in
1960 for attorney Gerald Larson and for the local
Savings and Loan. When the family moved to
Minneapolis, MN in 1964, Kathleen continued working
and became the administrative assistant to the
principal at North Junior High School. Kathleen
loved the years she spent at the school and she and
Harold cherished the many friendships that developed
during those years. Kathleen later went on to become
a highly successful real estate agent in the
Minneapolis area.
When Kathleen and Harold retired, they spent winters
at their property in Green Valley, AZ and the
remainder of the year in Green Lake, WI. Again they
found many, many friends in both places. During her
time in Green Lake, Kathleen conducted tours of the
area for the Green Lake Conference Center and in
2002 authored and published a historic book about
the area. The book, Just Do It Jessie’s Way,
was a success and she went on to speak at many
community events. Kathleen’s ability to play the
piano by ear resulted in many years of personal
enjoyment and professional success but the most
satisfying aspect of her gift was the fun she had
entertaining friends and family.
In 2003 Kathleen and Harold purchased an apartment
at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, IA.
Kathleen had come full circle and returned to the
area where she was born. Kathleen died at her home
on March 13, 2006 after a courageous battle with
cancer. Preceded in death by her parents, three
brothers and daughter-in-law Nancy (Stofferson)
