Esther M. Jacobsen - Age 97

     Esther M. (Rogers) Jacobsen was born on May 1, 1909 in Hancock, Iowa to Edgar and Bertha (Crouch) Rogers. She lived her entire life in Hancock. She graduated from Hancock High School in 1928 and has been active in the Hancock Alumni Association, being the oldest graduate.

     Esther married Alfred C. Jacobsen on February 6, 1929 in Oakland, Iowa. They raised their family on a farm east of Hancock. She was a 4-H leader, member of the Farm Bureau, and a long time member of the Rebecca Lodge. She and Alfred were members of the United Methodist Church in Hancock for over 70 years. Esther was active in the Ladies Society of the church, Secretary-Treasurer of the Federated Club and an active supporter of the AHST Booster Club. In 1992, Esther and Alfred were voted #1 Sports Fan of the Year.

     Esther died at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa on January 23, 2007. She had attained the age of ninety seven years, eight months and twenty two days. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty five years, Alfred, in 1993. She is also preceded by her parents, two sisters: Evelyn Collins and Ethel Roy; and five brothers: Floyd, William, Edgar, Woodrow and Robert Rogers.

     Survivors are her daughter, Bonnie M. Green and her husband, Robert, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, her son, Dennis E. Jacobsen, Sr., and his wife, Lois, of Hancock; her grandchildren: Susan Green of Council Bluffs, Sandi Burmeister and her husband, Doug, of Hancock, Keith Green and his wife, Lisa, of Council Bluffs, Dennis E. Jacobsen, Jr., and his wife Debbie, of Hancock, Steve Jacobsen and his wife, Renee, of Webster City, Iowa, Curt Jacobsen and his wife, Lisa, of Avoca, Kevin Jacobsen and his wife, Peggy, of Avoca and Darren Jacobsen of Hancock; sixteen grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

     Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church of Hancock or the Hancock Volunteer Fire Department.

 

 

Herbert Jacobsen, Jr. - Age 67Herbert Jacobsen

     Herbert Jacobsen, Jr., the son of Herbert C.H. and Verna Suhr Jacobsen, was born on August 2, 1937, in Avoca, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Herbert attended school in Walnut and was a member of the graduating class of 1955.

     Upon graduation, Herbert enlisted in the United States Army Reserves at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. After his discharge, Herbert began driving truck from 1957 until 1996 for various trucking companies. He enjoyed truck rodeos and was known by many by his CB handle "Big Zipper." Big Zipper loved his little brother and always took care of him, earning Larry the name, "Little Zipper."

     On August 20, 1960, Herbert was united in marriage to Mable Dorscher at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Three daughters were born to this union: Jackie, Susie, and Julie. Herbert enjoyed his family very much and loved the many trips and vacations they all took as a family. Big Zipper was a loving father and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He liked to play various card games, including Canasta. Driving along the open road was a passion of his, which he took great pride in. He often would purchase a bell from every state he passed through; later, acquiring a vast collection of bells.

     In April of 2000, Big Zipper became a resident of the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa. It was there that he died on Thursday, June 2, 2005, having attained the age of sixty-seven years and ten months. In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Donald Bladt.

     Survivors include his daughters, Jackie and her husband Mike Braun and Susie and her husband, John Blum, all of Omaha, Nebraska; Julie and her husband, Doug Engel of Avoca, Iowa; five grandchildren: Jessica and Jordyn Braun, Allison Blum and Tayler and Dustin Engel; two sisters: Shirley Bladt of Walnut, Iowa and Sharon Yearsley of Omaha, Nebraska; one brother: Larry Jacobsen and his wife Sherry of Walnut, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

 

 

Ione S. Jacobsen - Age 99

     Ione Sylvia Jacobsen, the only daughter of Garrett and Bertha (Davis) Reineke, was born on July 17, 1906, in Hancock, Iowa. Ione had two brothers, Willard and Floyd. She attended school at Hancock, Iowa. At the age of nineteen, her father passed away. Her mother was later married to Alfred Theis and Ione became a step-sister to Clarence, Helen and Eleanor.

     On March 15, 1934, Ione was united in marriage to William Jacobsen. Two children were born to this union: Dean and Caralee. After their marriage, they lived near Hancock, Iowa. In 1942, they returned to the Hancock area where they farmed. Ione helped her husband on the farm tending to the cows, pigs, chickens and milk separator. Ione moved to Modesto, California, where she lived for ten years, returning to Hancock, Iowa, following her husband’s death.

     Ione was very active in the Hancock Methodist Church and the U.M.W. as well as was a Sunday School Teacher for fourteen years. She was also active in the Garden Club and was President. The Hancock community and the church were very important to Ione. She would also participate in the Old Settler’s Days and was named Grand Marshal of the Parade and won the contest to name Hancock Park. Her prize for winning was a fishing pole. Ione also participated in the Flower Show where she would display theme flower arrangements. On Christmas, she decorated with theme floral arrangements to match each table cloth and had them displayed.

     Ione became a resident of Atlantic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in 1998. It was there that she died on Wednesday, September 14, 2005, having attained the age of ninety-nine years, one month, and twenty-eight days. In addition to her parents and her husband, William, Ione was preceded in death by her brothers and her son, Dean.

     Survivors include her daughter, Caralee Gunselman of Modesto, California; her granddaughter, Leslee Marlow of Pacific Grove, California; two great-granddaughters, Tiffani Marlow of Dana Point, California; and Kim Marlow of Pacific Grove, California; her sister, Eleanor Vandeventor of Ames, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

     She leaves with us, many memories of a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many.

 

 

Wanda O. Jacobsen - Age 98

     Wanda Olga Jacobsen, the daughter of Walter, Sr. and Polly Etta Stephenson Rieck, was born on February 9, 1910 in Guernsey, Iowa. She attended school in Guernsey until the third grade when the family moved to Walnut, Iowa. She graduated from Walnut High School and then attended Northwest Missouri State University.

     Wanda was united in marriage to Melvin Jacobsen on September 28, 1935 in Walnut, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Robert, Judy and Sally. After settling her family, Wanda, while nurturing her love of music, began teaching piano to children in the Walnut area, some of whom pursued musicology careers following college. Among her commitments to the community, she volunteered at her church, was the founding member and former President of the Junior Federation of Women's Club, a member of the Walnut Historical Society's committee to author the history of Walnut.

     In 1954, the family moved to Ohio where her husband was with Peter Kiewitt & Sons, returning to Walnut the following year. She remained in Walnut until March of 2005 when she moved to Prairie Hills Assisted living in Tipton, Iowa, becoming a resident of Cedar Manor Nursing Home in December, 2007. Wanda died at the Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Tipton Iowa on Thursday, March 20, 2008 having attained the age of ninety-eight years, one month and eleven days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Melvin; son, Robert; brothers and sisters: Everette, Phyllis Brindley, Walter Rieck, Jr. and Rose Ann Keebler.

     Survivors include her daughters Judy and her husband James Wurster of Lenox, Iowa; Sally and her husband Ron Engels of LaGrange, Illinois; daughter-in-law Linda Jacobsen of Tipton, Iowa; her sister Maxine Scheel of Avoca, Iowa; her sister-in-law Betty Rieck, Atlantic, Iowa, grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Monday, March 24, 2008 at 1:30 PM at the Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa with Pastor Gail Muckey as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Ronald Engels, Thomas Engels, Kimberle Jones, Nicole Amberson, Gregory Wurster, Suzanne Achenbaugh, Dennis Amberson, Michael Engels, Jason Wurster, Kristi Smith, Brandon Jacobsen, Dustin Jacobsen, Robert Engels and Julie Wheeler. Interment was in the Layton Township Cemetery, Walnut, Iowa.

 

 

Viola M. Jacobsen - Age 94Viola Jacobsen

     Viola Margratha Jacobsen, daughter of William and Clara (Harder) Peters, was born on September 3, 1910, on a farm near Hancock, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Avoca. Viola attended country school near Hancock. After grade school, she went on to live with her grandmother during the week in Avoca while she attended school and graduated from Avoca High School.

     While spending so much time during school with her grandmother, Viola picked up her grandmothers passion for cooking and handiwork. On January 1, 1930, she was united in marriage to Harry Ernest Jacobsen at the Lutheran Parsonage in Avoca, Iowa. Two children were born to this union. For twenty years the couple farmed east of Avoca until 1950 when they moved into Avoca where Harry began work for the Avoca Auction Company. Viola worked several odd jobs while living in Avoca but mostly as a telephone operator until 1960. She was a lifelong member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Avoca.

     Viola was a devoted wife who took care of her husband during a lengthy illness before his death. She also suffered through the death of her son, Virgil, at the age of forty-four. She was a strong woman who devoted so much of her life to her family. She will always be remembered for her homemade little chicken rolls as well as her buttermilk brownies and sour cream raisin bars. She also made over twenty afghans for her children and grandchildren.

     After the death of her husband, Viola remained at her home in Avoca until 1996 when she became a resident of Peace Haven in Walnut. She later moved to the Indian Hills Nursing Home in Council Bluffs in 1998 until January of 1999 when she became a resident of the Oakland Manor in Oakland, Iowa. It was here that she died on February 26, 2005, having attained the age of ninety-four years, five months and twenty-three days.

     In addition to her parents, her husband of over 61 years and her son, Viola was preceded in death by her grandson, Dean Hildebrand and her sister, Elva Tiarks. She is survived by her daughter, Lois Hildebrand of Oakland, Iowa; seven grandchildren; fifteen great grand children; two great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

 

 

Albert J. Jans - Age 85

     Albert J. Jans, the son of Henry and Margaret Majerus Jans, was born on January 16, 1921, in Earling, Iowa. He attended country school and later St. Joseph’s School in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized, made his First Communion and Confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling.
     On December 8, 1941, Albert enlisted in the United States Navy, one day after Pearl Harbor. He received his honorable discharge in August of 1942, due to the accidental death of his brother.
     Albert was united in marriage on February 9, 1943, to Loretta Bock at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. The marriage was performed by Msgr. Bissen and continued for over sixty-three years. Three children were born to this union, Kenneth, Marilyn and Donald.
     For several years, he worked for area farmers, as a mechanic at Vandenberg Motors, Davis Bus Lines and then Schwab and Bacon Hardware in Harlan for eleven years. Albert and Loretta then moved to a farm north of Harlan in 1962. During his years on the farm, Albert also did custom work, trucking as well as a repair shop. He was well known because he could fix anything. He would not give up until he was successful. He was especially fond of his Bob Cat and his John Deere rider mower. He has been a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan since 1946.
     His sense of humor was readily apparent, he always had a story to tell and liked to make everyone laugh. Favorite pastimes for Albert were hunting and fishing. He respected nature and often sheltered wild animals and kept many for pets. Music was another interest for Albert. He loved to play the accordion and the mouth harp, both by ear. On occasion, you could find Albert riding through the countryside on a three wheeler, go-cart or snowmobile.
     Albert died on March 3, 2006, at Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-five years, one month and fifteen days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson Jeff Deal and three brothers - Sylvan N., Sylvan H. and Alphonse Jans.
     Albert is survived by his wife, Loretta Jans of Earling, Iowa; his children: Kenny Jans and his wife Rosemary of Omaha, Nebraska; Marilyn and her husband Larry Deal of Atlanta, Georgia and Don Jans and his wife Peg of Earling, Iowa; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters: Katie Ritter of Grand Junction, Colorado and Marie Davis of Omaha, Nebraska, other relatives and many friends.
      A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, March 6, 2006, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa, at 11:30 A.M. with Rev. Robert Hoefler as the celebrant. Interment was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, with Jeff Deal as the honorary casket bearer. Serving as casket bearers were Brian Jans, Beckie Jans, Erica Buffington, Jesse Jans, and Wyatt Jans.

 

 

Alvin Jensen - Age 93

     Wilson Alvin Jensen, the son of Jens and Jennie Damgaard Jensen, was born on January 21,1913 in Shelby, Iowa.  Alvin and his siblings grew up on his grandfather Jensen's farm northeast of Shelby. He was baptized in the Danish  Lutheran Church and later confirmed in the United Lutheran Church in Shelby.  Alvin attended country school and Shelby Community School until the 11th grade.  After his schooling Alvin worked at many farm jobs before he joined the Navy and served from 1936 until 1940 and was stationed on the Battleship Colorado during that time.  He was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Second Class Petty Officer.

     Alvin was united in marriage to Elma Mary Rohrs on February 10, 1950 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.  In the spring of 1952 they moved to the Rohrs family farm with heir new son, Robert A. Jensen.  Alvin, Elma and Robert have had the honor of their  farm being recognized as one of the Century Farms of the State of Iowa.  Alvin retired at the age of 68 but remained active helping Robert and planted his last crop in 2003.  Alvin was a big fan of Iowa State University sports, he enjoyed mowing his lawn and reading.

     Alvin died at his home on Friday, January 12, 2007 having attained the age of ninety-three years, eleven months and three days, nine days short of his 94th birthday.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Elma, one brother Jens Jensen and sister Frances Johansen.

     Survivors include his son, Robert Jensen of Shelby, Iowa; his brothers: Leonard Jensen of Hemet, California;  Marlin Jensen and his wife Pernilla of Oakland, Nebraska; sisters-in-law: Helen Gaynor of Fullerton, California and Joan Jensen of Bloomfield, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Shelby Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa with Pastor Duane Anunson as the clergy.  Serving as pall bearers were Paul Wise, Gerald Buck, Larry Johansen, Duane Johnson, Vern Bauer and Gene Wahling.  Interment was held in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa.

 

 

Eldon Edward Jensen - Age 78

     Eldon Edward Jensen was born on October 26, 1927 at Shelby, Iowa. He was the son of Albert and Ruth Campbell Jensen. He was baptized at the Shelby Methodist Church and later confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Avoca, Iowa. Eldon attended school in Shelby, graduating with the Class of 1945. While in high school, he was a member of the boys basketball team that went to the state tournament.
     Eldon was united in marriage to Patricia Donahue on October 2, 1948, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Avoca, Iowa. To this union five children were born: Susan, Rick, Mark, Jack and Michael. Eldon and Patricia began their own family lawn care service which has been passed down to his children and grandchildren. He also worked for the Omaha World Herald as circulation manager for southwest Iowa. Eldon later worked for the city of Shelby as street and water maintenance manager. He retired from this position 1992.
Eldon instilled a hard work ethic in his children and grandchildren and he was strict but fair. He enjoyed sports, especially bowling and fishing. He loved visiting with people at the Corn Stalk Restaurant and playing cards. He and Patricia were members of a Pinochle group for over thirty-five years. Eldon liked to play pool but like with all sports, didn't like to lose. Eldon seldom missed any sports event in which his grandchildren participated.
     Eldon died on Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He had attained the age of seventy eight years, five months and two days. He was preceded in death by his parents.
     He is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Shelby, Iowa; one daughter, Susan and her husband, Dr. Craig Welbourne, of Western Springs, Illinois; four sons: Rick and his wife, Monica, of Omaha, Nebraska, Mark and his wife, Kathy of Shelby, Jack and his wife, Paula, of Independence, Missouri and Michael and his wife, Janice, of Cary, North Carolina; ten grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
      Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Avoca, Iowa with Rev John Frost as the celebrant and Msgr. Eugene Kerwin as the concelebrant. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Grace Jensen and Adam Jensen with Jenny Jensen, Brianna Jensen, Aaron Jensen, Dr. Benjamin Welbourne, Bridget Welbourne, Kevin Jensen, Julie Jensen and Matthew Jensen serving as casket bearers. Interment was held in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa.
 

 

Harvey B. Jensen - Age 92

     Harvey Burton Jensen, the son of Niels Kragelund and Anna Margretha (Eskov) Jensen, was born on February 21, 1914 in Walnut, Iowa. He attended school at Monroe Township No. 6 in Shelby County, Iowa. Harvey grew to adulthood on his parent's farm near Walnut, Iowa.

     Harvey was united in marriage to Agneta Olsen on September 15, 1935 in Harlan, Iowa. They became the parents of three children: Dorothy, Gary, and Dennis. After their marriage, Harvey farmed until 1976, when they retired from farming and in 1977 they moved into Elk Horn, Iowa. Agneta died on November 11, 1995. Harvey was later united in marriage to Betty Clark on June 13, 1998, at Elk Horn, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple resided at Peace Haven Retirement Home in Walnut, Iowa. Harvey became a resident of the Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Avoca, Iowa, in 2006.

     It was there that he died on Monday, July 17, 2006, having attained the age of ninety-two years, four months and twenty-six days. In addition to his parents and his first wife, Agneta, Harvey was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy, a grandson, Michael Jensen and his brothers and sisters: Edmund, Marie, Robert, Marvin, Lucille, and Folmer.

     Survivors include his wife, Betty of Walnut, Iowa; sons: Gary Jensen and his wife Linda of El Cajon, California; Dennis Jensen and his wife Connie of Avoca, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Ingalls of Bellevue, Washington; other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 20, 2006 at 10:00 AM at the Walnut, Iowa Presbyterian Church with burial in the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery in Elk Horn, Iowa. Pastor David Krueger officiated. Serving as casket bearers were Jay Bruck, Dustin Jensen, Jason Wood, Chad Jensen, Adam Karstens and Chris Murphy.

 

 

Mildred B. Jensen - Age 98

     Mildred Beryl Jensen, the daughter of Charles and Bessie M. Long Davis, was born on September 16, 1906, at Lebanon, Missouri. She attended country school at Lebanon, Missouri. Mildred grew to adulthood in Missouri, moving to Iowa in 1927.

     On February 4, 1928, Mildred was united in marriage to Grant Jensen at the Christian Church Parsonage in Logan, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Lowell, Ronald, Mary and Byron. After their marriage they lived on a farm near Logan, Iowa, until March of 1941 when they moved to a farm near Harlan, Iowa. Mildred was employed at the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan as a cook, later at the Old High School as a cook and then Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan. She was famous for her homemade cinnamon rolls. Mildred retired in the middle 1980's and Grant died in 1989.

     Mildred was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa, and the Retired Cooks Club. She enjoyed her family, gardening, hand work and made a quilt for each grandchild.

     Mildred became a resident of the Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa in May of 2002, and it was there that she died on Thursday, March 31, 2005, having attained the age of ninety-eight years, six months and fifteen days. In addition to her parents and her husband, Grant, Mildred was preceded in death by her brothers, Clifford, Charles, Frank, Vern, Drew, Edgar, Clayton and Paul and a sister, Iva.

     Survivors include her children: Lowell Jensen and his wife, Shirley of Ladoga, Indiana; Ronald Jensen and his wife Beverly of Harlan, Iowa, Mary and her husband, John Stangl of Marshalltown, Iowa; Byron Jensen of Harlan, Iowa; eight grandchildren: David Jensen and his wife, Beth; Pam and her husband, Bill Volenec; Lori and her husband, Mike Hoffmann; Rod Jensen and his wife, Dianne; Mark Jensen; Ronald Steven Jensen and his wife, Merry Jo; Wade Jensen and his wife, Linda; Elizabeth Jensen and friend Bret; eleven great-grandchildren: Willy Volenec; Mickala Volenec; Katie Volenec; Angela Jensen; Holly Jensen; Danny Jensen; Emily and her husband, Barry Sorenson; Laura Jensen; Jill Jensen; Grant Jensen; Hannah Jensen; two step-greatgrandchildren: Nick Hoskins and Savannah Hoskins; her brother, Hubert Davis of Delton, Michigan; sisters-in-law: Lorraine Davis, Dorothy Davis, Joyce Davis; other relatives and a great many friends.

     Funeral services were held on Monday, April 4, 2005, at the Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa, at 11:00 A.M. with Roger Crawford officiating. Interment was in Astor Cemetery in rural Defiance, Iowa, with Norman Jensen, Wayne Jensen, Bob Davis, Norman Davis, Clifford D. David, Jr., and John Stangl serving as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were Steve Jensen, Wade Jensen, David Jensen, Rodney Jensen, Mark Jensen and Bill Jensen, Jr.

 

Frances M. Jensen Johansen - Age 85

     Frances M. (Jensen) Johansen was born on February 26, 1921 at Shelby, Iowa. She was the daughter of Jens and Jennie (Damgaard) Jensen and was one of five children in the family. Frances was baptized and confirmed at the United Lutheran Church in Shelby. She attended grade school and high school in Shelby, graduating with the class of 1939. She then attended college in Cedar Falls, Iowa where she obtained her teaching degree.

     Frances taught in a rural school near Shelby. On February 26, 1941, she was united in marriage to Roy Johansen in Omaha, Nebraska. They were the parents of two children: Larry and Connie. Frances helped her husband with the farming operation and after retiring from the farm, she worked at CDS in Harlan, Iowa. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and square dancing for many years. Roy died on January 31, 2005. In recent years, Frances enjoyed doing wood crafts, and putting jigsaw puzzles together. She was a member of the United Lutheran Church at Shelby, where she was active in the Ladies Aid group of the church.

     Frances died on Sunday, July 2, 2006 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska following a short illness. She had attained the age of eighty five years, four months and six days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Roy, and by a brother Jens Jensen.

     She is survived by her children: Larry Johansen and his friend, Kaye Jackson, of Omaha, Nebraska and Connie Constable and her husband, Craig, of Shelby, Iowa; four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; three brothers: Leonard Jensen of Hemet, California, Alvin Jensen of Shelby, Iowa and Marlin Jensen and his wife, Pernilla, of Oakland, Nebraska; a sister-in-law, Joan Jensen of Bloomfield, Nebraska; other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Thursday, July 6, 2006 at 10:30 AM at the Shelby Lutheran Church with Pastor Duane Anunson serving as the clergy. Honorary casket bearers were Robert Jensen, Marlin Jensen, Alvin Jensen and Leonard Jensen with Tom Rihner, David Peters, Richard Goshorn, David Kardell, Gale Rihner and Robert Myers serving as casket bearers. Interment was held in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa.

 

 

Roy B. Johansen - Age 87

     Roy Bernard Johansen, son of Julius and Anna (Clausen) Johansen, was born on October 21, 1917 at Portsmouth, Iowa. He was one of two children in the family. He was baptized in Portsmouth, Iowa and later confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa. He attended country grade school at Persia, Iowa and then graduated from Shelby High School with the Class of 1936.

     Roy was united in marriage to Frances Mae Jensen on February 26, 1941 in Omaha, Nebraska. They were the parents of two children; Larry and Connie. Roy farmed all of his life. He was the Fairview and Shelby Township Assessor, served on the ASC Committee and was president of Babes and Boots square dance club for many years. Roy was a member of the Shelby United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Shelby, Iowa and served on the Church Board. In 1987 Roy retired from farming and in 1994, he and Frances moved into their home in Shelby, Iowa. Roy enjoyed traveling, camping and woodworking projects with his wife.

     Roy died on Monday, January 31, 2005 at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of eighty seven years, three months and ten days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dora Johansen.

     He is survived by his wife, Frances of Shelby, Iowa; his son, Larry Johansen and his friend, Kaye Jackson, of Omaha, Nebraska; his daughter, Connie and her husband Craig Constable of Shelby, Iowa; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

 

 

Florence A. Johnk - Age 79

     Florence Arline Johnk, daughter of William and Edith (Dieatrick) Lehnhardt, was born on December 11, 1927, in Anita, Iowa. She attended country school in Lincoln Township and graduated from Lewis, Iowa high school with the class of 1945.

     After graduating from high school, Florence started teaching country school. On December 12, 1946, Florence was united in marriage to Virgil Schaaf Johnk in Oakland, Iowa. One son was born to this union.

     Florence was a wife. mother, and a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening sewing, cooking, crocheting, and needlepoint. Florence had a soft heart and loved to help people in need.

     While living in Lewis, Iowa, Florence was a member of the Methodist Church. After her marriage to Virgil, she became a member of the Congregational Church in Oakland and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut until her death.

     Florence died on Saturday, December 8, 2007, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-nine years, eleven months, and twenty-seven days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Virgil, and one sister Leverne Zellmer.

     She is survived by her son Linn Johnk of Omaha, Nebraska; her sister Vera and her husband Milton Mueller of Walnut, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

 

 

Cecile M. Johnson - Age 98

     Cecile Mae Johnson, the daughter of William James and Eliza N (McGinness) Hutchison, was born on March 23, 1907 in Hazel Dell Township, Pottawattamie County, Iowa and was one of six children in the family. She was baptized at Hazel Dell and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Neola, Iowa. She attended Hazel Dell School until the eighth grade.

     Cecile was united in marriage to Marvin Chris Johnson on October 29, 1930 at St. Paul ‘s Lutheran Church in rural Neola, Iowa. After their marriage they farmed in the areas of Missouri Valley, Honey Creek, Hazel Dell and Persia. They were the parents of five children: Bernice, Mildred, Mary Jane, Duane and Eileen. She was known for her banana cream pies at threshing time and for her huge strawberry patch. She helped milk all the cows until the children were old enough to take over the milking. Cecile enjoyed making quilts and quilting them for her children and grandchildren. She also crocheted many doilies and afghans for her family and friends.

     Cecile died on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at her home in Persia, Iowa having attained the age of ninety-eight years, five months, and seven days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Marvin and one son, Duane, three brothers: Ben, Ray and Harvey "Pete" Hutchison, and two sisters: Elizabeth Kyle and Cora Hough.

     She is survived by her children: Bernice and her husband Ralph Baldauf of Omaha, Nebraska; Mildred and her husband Bob Miller of Atlantic, Iowa; Mary Jane and her husband, Keith Peterson of Shelby, Iowa; Eileen and her husband Frank Killpack of Neola, Iowa and a daughter-in-law Marlene Johnson of Persia, Iowa; twenty-five grandchildren; fifty-two great grandchildren and fourteen great great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral services were held on Friday, September 2, 2005, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Persia, Iowa, at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Duane Annunson officiating. Interment was in Valley View Cemetery in Persia, Iowa, with Steve Suntken and Scott Suntken serving as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were David Miller, Jim Baldauf, Jeff Killpack, Dean Killpack, Gail Peterson, Dennis Johnson, Steve Baldauf, and Rick Suntken.

 

 

Duane M. Johnson - Age 66

     Duane Marvin Johnson, the son of Marvin and Cecile (Hutchison) Johnson, was born on September 19, 1938 on a farm near Honey Creek, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and reaffirmed his faith at St. John’s Lutheran Church on May 15, 1953. Duane attended school at Persia and was a member of the graduating class of 1956.

     After graduating from high school, Duane began farming with his father. He met and later married Beverly Ivers. Three children were born to this union. On June 27, 1975, Duane was united in marriage to Marlene Leemkuil at Omaha, Nebraska. After their marriage they farmed outside of Persia, Iowa, until Duane began working at Robinson Implement in Irwin, Iowa where he was employed for the last thirteen years. He worked hard and was an active leader in his community. He was a dedicated husband, loving father, and cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

     He was a member of the Shelby Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa, and the bowling team in Persia for forty years. Duane loved children and was never one to turn away a stray dog or cat. He had a wonderful sense of humor, had a heart of gold, and was a great friend, never spreading any gossip. Duane enjoyed helping organize the tractor pulls and loved animals, especially horses.

     He died on Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, having attained the age of sixty-six years, seven months and eight days. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife, Marlene of Persia, Iowa; his children: Lori Carver of Sioux City, Iowa; Dennis Duane Johnson of S. Sioux City, Nebraska; Shari Stork of Emerson, Nebraska; Steve Suntken of Denver, Colorado; Rick Suntken and his wife, Vicki of Boone, Iowa; Valerie Polley of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Jeri Lynn Suntken of Aspen, Colorado; Scott Suntken and his wife, Angie of Gypsum, Colorado; Gail and her husband, Doug Dollen of Springdale, Arkansas; his mother, Cecile Johnson of Persia, Iowa; nineteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; his sisters, Bernice and her husband, Ralph Baldauf of Omaha, Nebraska; Mildred and her husband, Bob Miller of Atlantic, Iowa; Mary Jane and her husband, Keith Peterson of Shelby, Iowa; Eileen and her husband, Frank Killpack of Neola, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

      Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 30, 2005, at the Shelby Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa, at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Duane H. Anunson officiating. Interment was in Valley View Cemetery in Persia, Iowa, with Ray Parsons, Jerry Plambeck, George Wear, Bill Plambeck, Dan Manhart, Troy Plambeck and Denny Grudle serving as casket bearers.

 

 

Evelyn D. Johnson - Age 91

     Evelyn Doris Johnson, daughter of Carl Ludwig and Anna Dorthea (Jensen) Pingel, was born on February 2, 1913, in Shelby, Iowa. Due to the death of her mother, Evelyn and her brother Delbert were raised on their grandparent’s farm outside of Tennant, Iowa, while their father moved to Colorado to do custom work on farms. She was baptized and confirmed at the Shelby Lutheran Church. While growing up, Evelyn worked closely with her Grandma Gertrude helping with cooking, canning and sewing.

     After graduating from Tennant High School in 1930, she continued to be the main cook for the Pingel household. In the 1930's, the Pingel Orchestra provided music for many of the barn dances in the Tennant, Persia and Corley areas with Evelyn playing the piano. She was united in marriage to Wilbur Johnson on December 20, 1942, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Shelby. They were the parents of two daughters: Katherine and Virginia.

     Evelyn and Wilbur farmed on the east edge of Shelby where they raised livestock and Wilbur ran a blacksmith shop. After retirement, they built a house in town overlooking the farm. They enjoyed traveling and spent several winters in Arizona and Florida. Evelyn enjoyed being a homemaker. She loved her flower and vegetable gardens, was an excellent cook, and enjoyed sewing, quilting, and crocheting. She quilted with the Lutheran Sewing Circle making many quilts for the Lutheran World Relief. She also made each of her seven great grandchildren a quilt and crocheted each an afghan as well. She continued all these activities for nearly all the years of her life. In the fall of 2002, Evelyn became a resident of the Avoca Lodge of Assisted Living.

     Evelyn was a charter member of the Social Farmerettes Club, Friendship Club, Church Alter Guild, and other church groups. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and a very proud grandmother and great grandmother.

     Evelyn died on May 29, 2004, having attained the age of ninety-one years, three months and twenty-seven days. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Johnson, her brother Delbert Pingel and her half brother, Arthur Pingel.

     She is survived by her daughters: Katherine and her husband William Barrett of Shelby, Iowa and Virginia and her husband Kenneth Gibson of Iowa City, Iowa; her grandchildren: Galen and his wife Wendy Barrett of Crescent, Iowa, Traci and her husband Tim Miner of Gilbert, Iowa, Aaron Gibson and his wife Kari of Hoffmann Estates, Illinois, Heather and her husband Jon Meester of Crystal, MN and Ashlee and her husband Matt Taylor of Lakewood, Colorado; her great grandchildren: Madison and Landon Barrett, Alexandra and Owen Miner, Emma Gibson, and Andrew and Audrey Meester; her sister-in-law, Lu Pingel of Shelby, Iowa; half sisters, Gertrude Williamson of Julesburg, Colorado and Dorothy Lechman of Sterling, Colorado, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

 

 

Gladys M. Johnson - Age 94

     Gladys Marie Johnson, the daughter of Hans A. and Anna Margaret (Brodersen) Hansen, was born on a farm near Jacksonville, Iowa, on November 28, 1913. She attended country school in Jacksonville and grew to adulthood on the family farm. As many young girls did, Gladys worked out for area families until her marriage to Everett Johnson on December 29, 1937, in Shenandoah, Iowa. They were the parents of one son, Harold.

     Gladys and Everett then farmed north of Jacksonville until 1942, when they moved to a farm two miles south of Harlan. They continued to farm until 1974 when Everett retired. They remained on their farm until moving to Harlan in 1987. As a farm wife, Gladys assisted on the farm and enjoyed gardening and going fishing in Minnesota with Everett.

     After the death of her husband, Gladys lived in Harlan until becoming a resident of Elm Crest Retirement community in May of 2003, where she continued to reside until moving to the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Community in Avoca, Iowa in March of 2007. It was here that she died on January 4, 2008, exactly fourteen years to the day that Everett died having attained the age of ninety-four years, one month and seven days.

     In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her three brothers, Glenn, Mike and Herbert Hansen. Survivors include her son Harold and his wife Juliene of Harlan, her granddaughter, Michelle and her husband Kevin Piersen of Omaha, Nebraska; her great granddaughter, Morgan Pierson, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

     A funeral service was held on Monday, January 7, 2008, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Steve Chellew and Pastor Heather Ploen officiating the 10:30 AM service. Casket bearers were Kevin Pierson, James Burmeister, Dale Larsen, Richard Johnson, Dale Plagmann, and Dennis Woodin.

 

 

Helen V. Johnson - Age 86 of Plano, Texas

     Helen Vernice Johnson, the daughter of Ira and Lula (Sease) Keisler, was born in Gilbert, South Carolina on November 14, 1920 and was the fourth of seven children in the family. Helen grew up in Gilbert and graduated from Gilbert High School.

     After graduation Helen went to work at the Charleston Navy Yard and this is where she met her future husband, Harold Ray Johnson of Elk Horn, Iowa. After moving back to the Midwest, they were united in marriage on July 3, 1946. To this union two daughters were born: Cheryl Kay and Brenda Rae. The family settled in Avoca and bought the Avoca Cold Storage - a full service butcher shop. Helen and Harold worked together in this adventure.

      Helen was always a loving and devoted wife and mother, and a wonderful Christian witness. Following the death of Harold in 1971, Helen returned to her home town in South Carolina and went to work at Monroe's where she packaged calculators. After an early retirement, Helen enjoyed having company, going places and visiting friends and family. She took pleasure in the outdoors, sewing, Iris and Peony gardening, cultivating large vegetable gardens and canning. In 2004 she moved to Richardson, Texas where she spent her remaining years.

     Helen became a resident of the Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Plano, Texas and this is where she went to heaven on May 28, 2007, having attained the age of eighty six years, six months and fourteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband; four brothers: O'Neil, Herman, Vaughn and Smyrle Keisler and two sisters: Roberta Karan and Margaret Rankin.

     Survivors include her daughters: Cheryl and her husband Phil Musfeldt of Richardson, Texas; Brenda Johnson of Copperhill, Tennessee; one grandson Joel Musfeldt of Richardson, Texas; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends. She will be greatly missed by those who loved and knew her.

     Funeral Services were held on Friday, June 1, 2007 at 10:30 Am at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Marvin Piittmann, Alan Sieh, Phil Musfeldt, Otto Faaborg and Gary Lorenzen. Interment was held at Cuppy’s Grove Cemetery in rural Walnut, Iowa.

 

 

Clara Jones - Age 91Clara Jones

     Clara Jones was born on February 19, 1914, to Glenn and Clara Canedy Babbitt in rural Lewis, Iowa. Clara’s mother passed away when she was two weeks old. She then was raised by an uncle and aunt, Miller and Lena Weak, near Emerson, Iowa. Aunt Lena died when Clara was eleven years old. Clara continued to make her home with her uncle, whom she called "Pop". Clara graduated from eighth grade at West Oak School near Glenwood, Iowa. She was a member and attended the Christian Church at Glenwood as a young girl. Clara was very active in 4-H as a young person and achieved a trip to the Iowa State Fair for her judging of chickens. Clara also worked for many neighbors doing housework in the area when young.

     Clara met Walter Jones at a neighborhood church gathering and they were married on February 27, 1933 in Omaha, Nebraska. The young couple started their married life on a farm near Hastings, Iowa. Clara and Walter were blessed with two children; a daughter, LaDonna, who passed away December 20, 2000, and a son, Gerald.

     The family moved to the Marne, Iowa area in 1936, the year of the big snow storm. This move allowed Clara to live closer to her father, Glenn, and her wonderful stepmother, Hazel, whom she always referred to as Mom.

     In 1945, they moved to the Walnut, Iowa area and farmed for 45 years before retiring to an acreage nearby, where they resided until moving to the Peace Haven Retirement Home in Walnut in 2000. While living on their Walnut farm and at Peace Haven, they attended the Monroe Methodist Church.

     Walter and Clara moved to the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa in 2004 and it was there that Clara died on Saturday, April 30, 2005, having attained the age of ninety one years, two months and eleven days.

     Clara is survived by her husband of more than 70 years, Walter; her son, Gerald, and daughter-in-law, Marilyn Jones, of Flippen, Arkansas; a son-in-law, Robert Lafrentz, of Walnut, Iowa; seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, eleven step-great grandchildren, and one step-great-great grandchild. She is also survived by four sisters; Darlene and her husband Clyde Killion of Columbia, Missouri, Velma Boysen of Harlan, Iowa, Hyla Nash of Atlantic, Iowa and Neva and her husband Lee Manz of Avoca, Iowa; two brothers, Bill Babbitt and his wife Maye of Avoca, Iowa and Dell Babbitt and his wife Sharon of Estes Park, Colorado; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at 1:30 PM at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home, Walnut Chapel, Walnut, Iowa, with Rev. Ed Frank as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Keith Namanny, Kreig Namanny, Kenny Namanny, Julienne Crews, Scott Jones, Kevin Namanny and Kerry Namanny. Interment was held in the Monroe Township Cemetery in rural Walnut, Iowa.

 

 

Walter Raymond Jones - Age 95

     Walter Raymond Jones, son of Oliver and Edith (Harold) Jones, was born on February 6, 1912, in Mountain Grove, Missouri. When he was eight months old, his family traveled by covered wagon to Rooks County, Kansas. The journey took six weeks. There he lived in a sod house and attended school. After the Dust Bowl days, Walter's family moved to a farm south of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

     Walter met Clara Babbitt at a neighborhood church gathering and were married a short time later on February 27, 1933, in Omaha, Nebraska. The young couple started their married life on a farm near Hastings, Iowa. Walter and Clara were blessed with two children; a daughter, LaDonna, who died December 20, 2000 and a son, Gerald.

     The family moved to the Marne, Iowa area, in 1936, the year of the big snow storm. In 1945, they moved to the Walnut, Iowa, area and farmed for forty-five years before retiring to an acerage. In 2000 they then made their home at Peace Haven Retirement Home in Walnut and continued to attend the Monroe Methodist Church in rural Walnut.

     Walter and Clara lived happily together for seventy-two years before poor health separated them. They moved to the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa, in 2004 and it was there that Clara died on April 30, 2005. Walter died at the Heritage House on January 2, 2008, having attained the age of ninety-five years, ten months and twenty-seven days. In addition to his parents, wife and daughter, Walter was preceded in death by his brother Gerrald.

     Walter is survived by his son, Gerald and daughter-in-law, Marilyn Jones of Flippin, Arkansas; a son-in-law, Robert Lefrentz of Walnut, Iowa; six grandchildren, four step grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Dale and his wife Eileen Jones of Emerson, Iowa; Harold and his wife Elsie Jones of Michigan and his sister Betty Streeter of Old Hickory, Tennessee; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral Services were held Monday, January 7, 2008, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa. Pastor Dave Swinton officiated the 10:30 AM service with burial at the Monroe Township Cemetery in rural Walnut, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Kreig Namanny, Julienne Crews, Kerry Namanny, Kevin Namanny, Scott Jones, and Kenny Namanny.

 

 

Elsie J. Juhl - Age 92

     Elsie Jane Juhl, the daughter of John and Ellen (Winters) Egelund, was born on March 22, 1914, in Los Angeles, California. She attended grade school in Wilmington, California and high school in San Pedro, California.

     After school, Elsie was united in marriage to Erik Juhl on January 21, 1933, in Los Angeles, California. To this union two sons were born: Gordon and Roger. Elsie worked as a homemaker and taking care of her family was her main priority. She enjoyed gardening and flowers. She also enjoyed art and painting.

     Elsie died at the home of her nephew in Shelby, Iowa on May 18, 2006, having attained the age of ninety two years, one month and twenty-seven days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Erik, and one brother, Paul.

     She is survived by her children: Gordon Juhl of Montgomery, Texas and Roger Juhl of Vancouver, Washington; three grandchildren: Todd Juhl, Cheryl Shaw and Kathleen Juhl; three great grandchildren; two sisters: Sara Cavanaugh of Huntington Beach, California and Mary Beebe of Palm Springs, California, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

     A prayer service was held on Monday, May 22, 2006 at 7:00 PM at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa, with Rev. Duane Anunson officiating. Georgene Juhl and John Clayton provided the musical selections. A funeral service was then conducted on Thursday, May 25, 2006 at the Pacific View Mortuary in Corona Del Mar, California.

 

 

Victor N. Julius - Age 88

     Victor Nelson Julius, the son of Herdis (Nelson) and Charles Marion Julius, was born on February 9, 1918, six miles east of Irwin, Iowa, in Jefferson Township, Shelby County, Iowa. His family moved to Harlan when he was nine years old. Victor attended Harlan Schools and was a member of the graduating class of 1935.

     On September 6, 1938, Victor was united in marriage to Ruth Irene Bartelson, at the First Baptist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. Two children were born to this union: Clark and Meredith. After their marriage, the couple farmed a three hundred and twenty acre farm one and a half miles north of Fiscus, Iowa, in Polk Township. He retired in April of 1980, and moved to a home on Farnam Circle in Harlan, Iowa. Victor raised roses and would donate them to the church. He also donated his time during the elections by setting up the election machines. He and Ruth volunteered their time at the hospital and at Elm Crest Retirement Community.

Because of his age and health reasons, Victor and Ruth moved to Burleson, Texas, in May of 2006. This is near Crowley, Texas, where their daughter and son-in-law, Meredith and Larry Wright live.

     Victor was a member of the First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa, and enjoyed his family, friends and woodworking. Victor was true to his faith and continued to pray until his death.

He died on Monday, August 7, 2006, in Crowley, Texas, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, five months and twenty-nine days. Victor was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson-in-law, Carry Crill.

     Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Burleson, Texas; his children: Clark E. Julius, MD and his wife, Ann of Knoxville, Tennessee; Meredith and her husband, Larry Wright of Crowley, Texas; five grandchildren: Kim Crill of Crowley, Texas; Troy Wright and his wife, Lori of McKinney, Texas; James Julius and his wife, Gretchen of Lenoir City, Tennessee; Kipp Julius and his wife, Courtney of Knoxville, Tennessee; Jennifer Julius of Knoxville, Tennessee; five great-grandchildren; Lauren Crill and Blake Crill of Crowley, Texas; Gracie Wright of McKinney, Texas; Kylie Julius and William Julius of Knoxville, Tennessee; one great-great grandchild, Landon, who is due on January 1, 2007; his sister: Viola Gear of Kearney, Nebraska; other relatives and many friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Saturday, August 12, 2006, at the First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa, at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Gundar Lamberts officiating. Interment was in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, with James Julius, Troy Wright, Kipp Julius, and Blake Crill serving as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were Randall Nelson, Rowly Burton, James Bartelson, Allyn Bartelson, Bob Burton, Dean Bartelson, Paul Nelson, Merle Campbell and Randy Ouren.

 

 

Russel S. Justice - Age 79
     Russel S. Justice was born on August 14, 1927, on a farm near Manilla, Iowa, to Ralph and Alta (Chamberlain) Justice. Russel attended Manilla High School, graduating in 1945. He farmed until January of 1951, when he enlisted in the United States Army. After his basic training, he was sent to Japan for his schooling and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. Russel was honorably discharge from the service in October of 1952. He returned to Iowa and continued his farming career.
     On February 19, 1956, Russel was united in marriage to Darlene Petersen at the Frieden Evangelical Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Two children were born to this union: his daughter Diane, and his son Gary. Russel and Darlene farmed near his hometown of Manilla until 1958. It was that year that they moved to their present farm near Irwin, Iowa, and where he remained. Russel was a member of the Irwin United Methodist Church.
     Russel was an avid college football fan and would cheer for the Iowa Hawkeyes as well as the Iowa State Cyclones. He loved to spend time with his family and especially loved dancing with his wife of fifty-one years. He also had a special fondness for his Farmall M tractor that kept him farming for over fifty years.
     Russel was admitted to Myrtue Medical Center on March 7, 2007, and it was there that he died having attained the age of seventy-nine years, six months, and twenty-one days. He was preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers: Earl, Kenneth, George, Harold, and Amos.
     Russel is survived by his wife Darlene Justice of Irwin, Iowa; his daughter Diane and her husband Randy Breach of Atlantic, Iowa; his son Gary Justice of Irwin; his grandsons Scott Breach and Dave Breach, both of Atlantic; two brothers: Clifford and his wife Frances Justice of Irwin and Howard and his wife Norma Justice of Ankeny, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.
     A funeral service was held on Friday, March 9, 2007, with Pastor Keith Pals officiating at the 1:00 PM service held at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Leo Klotz, Roger Rusch, Leon Klotz, Scott Breach, Dave Breach, and Jim Justice. Military rites were held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, by the Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 and the Shelby County VFW Post No. 941.
