Kenneth J. Haas - Age
92
Kenneth Jacob Haas was born on August 8, 1917 to
Gilbert and Alma (Groepper) Haas in Shelby,
Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the
Minden Congregational Church. He attended school
in Shelby and graduated from Shelby High School
in 1935.
On March 1, 1939, he
was united in marriage to Alpha Schnepel in
Missouri Valley, Iowa. He farmed in the Minden
area and then the Guthrie Center area until
1968. At that time, he began employment at
General Electric in Carroll, Iowa. He retired in
1983 when they moved to Atlantic, Iowa.
Ken and Alpha traveled
throughout the United States. He had a great
sense of humor and was very witty.
He was an avid
basketball fan and watched girls basketball as
well as the NBA. He also loved Glenn Miller and
big band dance music. Ken spent much of his time
reading whatever he got his hands on. He was
especially interested in westerns and mafia
stories and kept reading up until his death.
Ken died on Sunday, May
9, 2010, at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab
Center in Atlantic, Iowa, having attained the
age of ninety-two years, nine months, and one
day. He is preceded in death by his parents
Gilbert and Alma; his wife Alpha; three infant
children; his brothers and sisters: Jerome Haas,
Berdine Bond, Genevieve Scott, Douglas Haas, and
Harley Haas; and his nephew Tony Bond.
He is survived by his
nieces and nephews: Connie Spradley, Marlene
Wallace, John Bond, Dan Bond, Carol Bond,
Douglas Haas, Jr., Gilbert Haas, Jenny Stanbro,
and "Chip" Haas; Alpha’s special nieces Karen
Hundt, Lavon Hadfield, Joyce McKinny, and Bev
Schroder; and her other nieces and nephews;
great nieces and nephews; other family members
and friends.
Pastor Brian Wohlhutter
officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on
Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Pauley Jones Funeral
Home in Avoca, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers
were: Connie Spradley, Marlene Wallace, Douglas
Haas, Jr., Gilbert Haas, Jenny Stanbro, Carol
Bond, Dan Bond, John Bond, and Chip Haas.
Serving as casket bearers were: Joyce and Rich
McKinny, Lavon and Joe Hadfield, Karen and Bob
Hundt, and Beverly Shroder. Interment was held
at the Minden Cemetery in Minden, Iowa.

Russell Haas - Age 85
Russell Haas, son of Adolph and Johanna
(Nielsen) Haas, was born on November 3, 1924, on
a farm near Jacksonville, Iowa. He was baptized
and confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church
in Jacksonville. Russell attended school at
Jackson No. 9 country school through the eighth
grade. After eighth grade graduation, he began
working for Earl Stewart as a farmhand in the
Jacksonville area.
On November 24, 1946, Russell was united in
marriage to Dorothy Ann Chipman at the United
Methodist Church Chapel in Harlan, Iowa. After
their wedding, they farmed near Defiance for
three years. The farmstead provided little
conveniences such as running water and
electricity. In their early years of marriage,
Russell and Dorothy enjoyed many fun evenings
square-dancing. They moved to a farm north of
Tennant, and then moved in 1968, to the Green
Farm until their retirement. Russell was a 4-H
leader and a long time member of Immanuel
Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing and
gardening was his specialty. Russ and Dorothy
enjoyed many annual vacations with Raymond and
Jeanette Chipman.
Russ was very diversified, not only was he a
successful farmer, but he also provided medical
attention to the children and grandchildren with
his healing specialty medicine of mercurochrome.
As a nutritionist, he helped the grandchildren
understand the enjoyment of buttering saltine
crackers and dipping them in his coffee for a
flavorful snack. His family and farm were his
life. Russ enjoyed going to the fairs and
watching his children and grandchildren show
livestock. He attended and supported the
children in many sporting events throughout the
years.
Russ retired from farming in 1999 and in 2004
moved to Harlan where he spent the rest of his
years.
Russell died on Sunday, May 2, 2010, at Myrtue
Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained
the age of eighty-five years, five months, and
twenty-nine days. In addition to his parents,
Russell was preceded in death by his brothers
James and Donald.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Harlan,
Iowa; their children: Larry Haas and his wife
Peggy of Harlan, Iowa; Ron Haas and his wife
Robin of Stanton, Iowa; Cindy Haas of Perry,
Iowa; Lori and her husband Brian Schaben of
Kansas City, Missouri; nine grandchildren: Tyson
Haas, Ian Haas, Stephanie Ochsner, Gary Burnison,
Nichole Carpenter, Misty Smith, Russell Lundy,
Chase and Jack Schaben; thirteen
great-grandchildren; his siblings: Ruby Larsen
of Maple Grove, Minnesota; Amy Gilmore of
Denver, Colorado; Edna Haas of Harlan, Iowa; and
John Haas and his wife Hertha of Harlan, Iowa;
nieces; nephews; other family members and many
friends.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, May 7,
2010, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan,
Iowa, with Rev. Steven Chellew officiating the
10:30 AM service. Interment was held at the
Harlan Cemetery with Terry Boeck, Jim Boardman,
Ernie Schnack, David Gibson, Raymond Chipman,
Rick Chipman, Jerry Haas, and Gailyn Larsen
acting as honorary casket bearers. Serving as
casket bearers were Ian Haas, Gary Burnison,
Tyson Haas, Russell Lundy, Chase Schaben, and
Jack Schaben.

Mary "Patti"
Patricia Hahn - Age 45
Mary "Patti"
Patricia Hahn, daughter of Leo and Rosemary
(Green) Hahn, was born on June 4, 1964, in
Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was baptized and
confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in
Earling, Iowa, and attended grade school at St.
Joseph’s Catholic School in Earling. In June
1981, Patti became a paraplegic as a result of
an automobile accident, but she never let her
handicap stop her from enjoying life. Patti
graduated from Harlan Community High School with
the class of 1982 and continued her education at
St. Mary’s College in Omaha, Nebraska where she
obtained an ABS degree in business.
After graduating from college, Patti began
working with the National Park Service for four
years and also worked at the Corps of
Engineering for an additional four years. Patti
also took additional class at the University of
Nebraska at Omaha to obtain her teaching
license. After earning her license, Patti began
working with special education students and also
worked as a substitute teacher for the Council
Bluffs area schools.
When Patti wasn’t busy in the classroom, she
enjoyed spending time playing pool and won
several awards playing in area tournaments. She
also loved to ride her horse and continued to do
so even after her accident. Patti was also an
avid University of Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
Patti was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church in Earling, Iowa until she moved to
Council Bluffs, Iowa, where she attended St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church.
Patti died on Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at
Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska,
having attained the age of forty-five years,
three months, and eighteen days.
She is survived by her parents Leo and Rosemary
Hahn; her brother Mike Hahn; and her nephews Joe
and Jim Hahn all of Earling, Iowa; other family
members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday,
September 26, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church in Earling, Iowa. Rev. Tom Coenen
celebrated the 10:30 AM service with interment
at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling. Serving as
casket bearers were: Joe Hahn, Andrew Hahn, Jim
Hahn, Leo Green, Tom Green, and Alex Hahn.

Leora F. Hamdorf - Age 83
Leora Francis Hamdorf, the daughter of Jesse
N. and Marie Ronnfeldt Grooms, was born on a
farm near Hancock, Iowa on October 23, 1923.
She attended country school near Hancock and
graduated from Hancock High School in 1941.
Leora was united in marriage to Orville
"Bud" Hamdorf on July 5, 1948 in Avoca,
Iowa. To this union three children were
born: Ruth, Terry and Rodney. After their
marriage they farmed east of Avoca for five
years and then south of Walnut, Iowa until
1966 when they moved to their home near the
Harlan Airport. Leora contracted polio in
1952 but that did not stop her from doing
some of the things she enjoyed like
crocheting, crossword puzzles, being on her
lap top computer and baking. She also took
many trips to Branson, Missouri for a
reunion of other Polio victims.
Leora died on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at
Creighton University Medical Center in
Omaha, Nebraska having attained the age of
eighty-three years, seven months and
thirteen days. She was preceded in death by
her parents, her husband Bud, who died in
1997, infant son Rodney and her brother,
Wayne Grooms.
Leora is survived by her children: Ruth
Hamdorf and Terry Hamdorf, both of Harlan,
Iowa; sisters-in-law: Orlene Scott and Alta
Hansen, both of Harlan, Iowa and Wilma
Throener of West Point, Nebraska;
brother-in-law Delner Hamdorf and his wife
Beverly of Morrison, Colorado; other
relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, June
9, 2007 at 10:30 AM at the Pauley Jones
Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with Wayne
Paulsen as the clergy. Serving as casket
bearers were Dale Klindt, Dwight Carroll,
John Plagman, Shane Havick, Mark Sieh and
Duane Johnson. Interment was held at the
Graceland Cemetery in Avoca, Iowa.

Marvin W. Hamilton - Age 76
Marvin Wayne
Hamilton, the son of Robert and Mildred Osborn
Hamilton, was born on August 23, 1930 in Elk
City, Nebraska. He attended grade school in
Elk City and Omaha and high school at Omaha
Tech until the eleventh grade. Marvin was
inducted to the United States Army on August
27, 1951. He was stationed in Korea where he
earned a service medal with two bronze
service stars. He was honorably discharged
July 15, 1953.
Marvin
was united in marriage to Jenny Wallace on
December 26, 1951 in Papillion, Nebraska. To
this union seven children were born. Marvin
worked at various construction jobs; drove
milk truck and also worked at St. Mary's
Body Shop. In 1953 they started farming near
Underwood, Iowa, later moving to their home
south of Avoca where he farmed until his
retirement. Marvin enjoyed camping and
fishing. He was mechanically inclined and
often rebuilt his own tractors. He did the
work on their home when they added on to it;
even installing the furnace. He always had
his sidekick next to him on the farm, his
dog Makita.
Marvin died at the Avoca Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center in Avoca, Iowa on
Thursday, April 5, 2007 having attained the
age of seventy-six years, seven months and
thirteen days. He is preceded in death by
his parents, twin grandsons, Jessie and
Jerod Hamilton; one brother Wendel Hamilton
and his daughter-in-law, Brenda Hamilton.
Survivors include his wife Jenny of rural
Avoca, Iowa; his children: Cheryl and her
husband Wes Jensen of Council Bluffs, Iowa;
Robert Hamilton of Council Bluffs, Iowa;
Cindy and her husband Scott Knop of Walnut,
Iowa; LeaAnn Van Horn of Underwood, Iowa;
John Hamilton an his wife Kay of Crescent,
Iowa; Ron Hamilton of Walnut, Iowa; Edwin
Hamilton and his wife Colleen of Atlantic,
Iowa; nineteen grandchildren; thirteen great
grandchildren; one sister, Gayle and her
husband Larry Osburn of Omaha, Nebraska;
sister-in-law Rose Marie Hamilton; nieces,
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday,
April 7, 2007 at the Calvary Baptist Church
in Walnut, Iowa. Casket bearers were Jeremy
Jensen, Brian Hamilton, Zachary Hamilton,
Aaron Van Horn, Eric Van Horn, Tyler
Hamilton, Garret Knop and Dillan Hamilton.
Interment was in Layton Township Cemetery in
Walnut.

Mildred
A. Handbury - Age 93

Mildred
Annie Handbury, daughter of Henry and Annie L. (Dau)
Muxfeldt, was born on August 21, 1916, in Cass
Township, in Harrison County, Iowa. She attended
country school in Cass Township and grew to
adulthood in Logan, Iowa, where she worked at
Harvey’s Variety Store. She also played piano
for a band in Logan that played for area dances.
On December 24, 1943, Mildred was united in
marriage to Frank Handbury in Omaha, Nebraska.
One son, Max, was born to this union. After
their wedding, Mildred and Frank made their home
on the family farm near Neola.
Mildred was a devoted care giver to her husband
for fifteen years because of his ill health. She
also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, gardening,
and spending time with her son and
grandchildren.
Mildred died on Friday, November 20, 2009, at
Westmont Care Center in Logan, Iowa, having
attained the age of ninety-three years, two
months, and thirty days. She is preceded in
death by her parents; her husband; her brothers:
Vern, Elmer, and Maynard.
She is survived by her son Max Handbury and his
wife Jerri of Persia, Iowa; four grandchildren;
six great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other
family members and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, November
24, 2009, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in
Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Ron Keith officiating
the 10:00 AM service. Interment was held at
Neola Township Cemetery in Neola, Iowa, with
Wally Polak, Gale Muxfeldt, Jerry Driver, Steve
Stamp, Duane Blowers, and Don Feekin acting as
honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket
bearers were: Randy Polak, Matthew Handbury,
Ronnie Lee, David Sliva, Craig Handbury, and
Dale Kosmacek. 
Belva Hansen -
Age 96
Belva
Langer Hansen died on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at
the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca,
Iowa. She had attained the age of ninety six
years, three months and twenty-one days.
Belva was born January 1, 1912 in Minden, Iowa
to Kate (Haas) and Peter Langer, Jr. She was the
second of four children and grew up in Minden.
At the age of seven her parents died of the
Spanish influenza and she was raised by her
Grandmother Haas. Belva was confirmed in the
Minden Congregational Church and graduated from
Minden High School with the Class of 1929. After
graduation she worked in various households and
on December 2, 1931 she married Wilbert Hansen
of Avoca.
Belva and Wilbert lived on a Langer farm south
of Minden for awhile but later moved to a farm
east of Corley, Iowa. They were the parents of
five children, three of whom died in infancy. In
the 1940's Wilbert and Belva lived in various
Kansas locations as Wilbert worked in
construction. In 1945 they returned to Avoca to
live, where Belva had jobs at several local
cafes.
In the 1950's Belva worked as a telephone
operator until Avoca went to dial up. She also
worked during the early 1960's as a cook in the
Avoca schools. Belva was instrumental in helping
her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Roger
Kubik get into the restaurant business. She
worked at Kubiks Kitchen and later at the
Villager in Walnut, Iowa. She was always ready
to help her children and grandchildren in their
projects and businesses. Belva loved working and
meeting people in the restaurant business. She
was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Belva was preceded in death by her parents in
1918; her husband Wilbert in 1972; three
children: Wilbert, Jr., Kenneth and Karol; two
grandchildren, Tracy and Scott Kubik; her
brothers, Milton and Chester Langer and her
sister, Bernadette Stroebele.
She is survived by her daughters: Barbara (Mrs.
Robert) Brown and Betty (Mrs. Roger Kubik), all
of Avoca; her grandchildren: Wanda Schuler of
Red Bluff, California, Janet (Mrs. Alan) Graham
of Avoca; Kerri Connell of Omaha, Nebraska and
Angela (Mrs. James) Dimmitt of Hamlin, Iowa;
five great grandchildren and two great, great
grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, other
relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, April
26, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich
as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were
Dan Connell, Alan Graham, Jeremiah Thompson,
James Dimmitt, Ryan Graham and John Stroebele.
Interment was held at the Graceland Cemetery,
Avoca, Iowa. 
Dewey E. Hansen
- Age 88
Dewey Ernest Hansen, the son of Ernest and
Mamie Ingwers Hansen, was born on November
28, 1918 in Fairview Township, Shelby
County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed
in the First Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa.
Dewey attended country school Fairview
Township School #1.
On September 19, 1945, Dewey was united in
marriage to Alta Berniece Hamdorf in Council
Bluffs, Iowa. To this union four children
were born. After their marriage they resided
on the home place east of Corley where they
were engaged in farming. Dewey enjoyed
farming all of his life, the stock car
races, fishing and going to dances in Corley
and Avoca.
Dewey died at his
home, that he has lived on since he was
three months old, east of Corley on
Wednesday, January 24, 2007 having attained
the age of eighty-eight years, one month and
twenty-seven days. He is preceded in death
by his parents; his sister Alvina Jacobsen;
brother Walter Hansen; one granddaughter,
Amanda Dexter and one step grandson, Tylor
Toyne.
He is survived by his wife, Alta of Harlan,
Iowa; his children: James Hansen and his
wife Karen of Walnut, Iowa; Vernon Hansen
and his wife Lisa Martin-Hansen of Tucker,
Georgia; Darrell Hansen and his wife Lana of
Harlan, Iowa and Nadine and her husband
Nathan Dexter of Casper, Wyoming; twelve
grandchildren; six great grandchildren;
sister Hazel and her husband Howard Schnieder of Avoca, Iowa and a sister-in-law
Alverta Hansen of Audubon, Iowa; nieces,
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Services were held on Saturday, January 27,
2007 at 1:30 PM at the Pauley Jones Funeral
Home in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich
as the clergy. Serving as pall bearers were
Kevin Hansen, Nathan Hansen, Clayton Dexter,
Dustin Hansen, Philip Hansen and Ethan
Dexter. Serving as Honorary Bearers were
Tiffany Siffring, Leland Dexter, Alycia
Hansen, Spenser Dexter, Jade Hansen and
Maxwell Hansen. Interment was held in the
Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.

Edward Hansen - Age 95
Edward Hansen,
son of Hans T. and Mary (Petersen) Hansen was born November
9, 1915 on the family farm northwest of Jacksonville, Iowa.
He was baptized and confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran
Church in Jacksonville. He attended Jackson No. 2 country
school through the eighth grade. After his schooling, Edward
began working for his dad for room and board only. At the
age of twenty-one, Edward received thirty dollars a month
plus room and board and all the work around the farm was
done with horses.
On November 9, 1941, Ed was united in marriage to Leota
Gearhart at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville.
Four daughters were born to this union: Bonnie, Loraine,
Ilene and Mary Beth. Prior to his marriage, Ed was renting
the Andrew Poldberg farm and this is where Ed and Leota
began their married life. He purchased his first pair of
work horses, Belle and Beauty for two hundred and fifty
dollars. Ed delivered the Des Moines Sunday paper in his
1937 Ford two door V-8 sedan with Leota riding with him most
Sundays. They then moved to the Hans Marcussen farm west of
Kimballton and farmed there until 1949, when they moved to
the Hans Petersen farm for one year. Ed and Leota then moved
to the Lars Petersen farm in 1950 and later moved to the
Chris O. Christensen farm northwest of Jacksonville in 1963.
Ed always farmed with John Deere equipment, with one
exception; a Ferguson tractor he purchased in 1953. His
first piece of equipment that wasn’t horse drawn was a John
Deere H tractor that had a two row cultivator, a 212 plow
and a converted horse-drawn disk. In addition to farming, Ed
worked at the ASCS office for thirty years, was township and
county committeeman for nine years, a real estate broker
with Leonard Steen Realty and was a director at Landmands
National Bank in Kimballton and Audubon for twenty years.
Ed loved his ponies and pony hitches often showing them
at the Shelby, Audubon and Pottawattamie County fairs
beginning in 1960. He was known for giving ponies to his
grandchildren and other family members and friends - anyone
who asked actually. He enjoyed playing pitch and he and
Leota were members of a neighborhood pinochle club. Ed was
also a very staunch democrat often telling his daughters to
"vote a straight ticket." Ed and Leota also enjoyed
traveling after their retirement with trips to Europe and
Hawaii and various places through the United States. They
built their new home in Harlan in 1987 where Leota lived
until she passed away in 1988.
In 1990, Ed was united in marriage to Catherine Linde
and they continued to make their home in Harlan. In April of
2006, Ed and Catherine became residents of the Elm Crest
Retirement Community in Harlan and this is where he died on
August 14, 2011 having attained the age of ninety-five
years, nine months and five days. In addition to his parents
and wife of forty-seven years, Leota, Ed was preceded in
death by his infant daughter Mary Beth; his sisters Mabel
and husband Everett Greve, Myrtle and husband Glen Klindt
and Hazel and husband Norman Hansen and brothers Thomas and
wife Mabel and Russell and wife Dorothy Hansen.
He is survived by his wife of twenty-one years,
Catherine Hansen of Harlan, Iowa; his daughters: Bonnie and
her husband Robert Myers of Shelby, Iowa; Loraine and her
husband Kenny Towne of Hancock, Iowa and Ilene and her
husband Verne Nelson of Harlan; two step children: Cheryll
and her husband Brownnie Polley of Carlisle, Iowa and John
Linde and his wife Roxanne of Harlan; sisters-in-law:
Shirley Gearhart of Great Falls, Montana; Myrna Poldberg of
Harlan; Shirley McDermott of Atlantic, Iowa;
brothers-in-law: Charles Gearhart of Harlan and Stuart
Gearhart of Reno, Nevada; fifteen grandchildren; nineteen
great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; four
step grandchildren; eight step great grandchildren and five
step great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other
relatives and many friends.
Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiated the 11:00 AM funeral
service on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at Bethlehem Lutheran
Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were
Laurie Hoepner, Susan Hulsebus, Brenda Boyle, Andrea Turk,
Darci Towne, Amy Towne, Cari Nelson, and Natasha Nelson.
Serving as casket bearers were Charles Myers, Steven Myers,
Darren Towne, Dale Towne, Nathan Nelson, Mark Nelson, and
Scott Nelson. Interment was held at the Jacksonville
Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa.

Elizabeth B. Hansen - Age 92
Elizabeth B. Hansen, second daughter of
Edwin G. and Myrtle (Baughman) Robertson,
was born on September 16, 1915 on a farm in
Shelby County, Iowa. Elizabeth was one of
four children, having had two sisters and
one brother. She went to school for the
first seven grades in Washington Township #3
near Panama, Iowa and then moved to Dunlap
were she graduated in 1932. She enjoyed her
school days and especially participating in
the marching band, orchestra, and concert
band. Elizabeth went on to Van Sant’s
Business School in Omaha and received her
diploma. She first worked for Thomas J.
Beckley, Attorney at Law and later Powers
and Gilchrist, attorneys in Denison. She
later worked as a clerk at Coast to Coast
and Farner’s Store in Harlan for many years.
She was married to Woodrow Hansen on August
26, 1937 in a double wedding with her sister
Laurel and Woodrow’s brother Emory at the
Dunlap Methodist Episcopal Church. They
lived their entire married life in Harlan.
She and Wutz celebrated their 60th
wedding anniversary in 1997.
Elizabeth joined the Dunlap Methodist
Episcopal Church and took an active part in
the Methodist Youth Fellowship. During her
first years of married life she joined the
Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan and was
baptized in 1939. She then became a charter
member of the First Baptist Church in Harlan
and has considered the members her extended
family. At one time she served as Deconess
and she and Woodrow served as co-helpers for
the Baptist Youth Fellowship. She was a
member of the Baptist Home Auxiliary for
many years and served as Den Mother for
years with the Cub Scouts.
Elizabeth died on Saturday, August 23, 2008,
at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan,
having attained the age of ninety-two years,
eleven months, and seven days. She is
preceded in death by her parents, her
husband Woodrow, her son Ron, her sisters:
Laurel Hansen and Jean Christiansen and one
brother Edwin Robertson.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law Vi
(Ron) Hansen of Lincoln, Nebraska; her sons:
Phillip Hansen and his wife Jill of Fort
Dodge, Iowa, and Byron Hansen and his wife
Nan of Rockton, Illinois; seven
grandchildren: Kimberly and her husband Bill
Booth of Niskayuna, New York, David Hansen
and his wife Andrea of Newport, Rhode
Island, Michelle and her husband Tim Stortz
of Olathe, Kansas, Heidi and her husband
John Savoy of Olathe, Kansas, Josh Hansen
and his wife Renee of Harlan, Iowa, Ben
Hansen and his wife Jeana of Austin, Texas,
and Jonathan Hansen and his wife Jessica of
London, England; fourteen
great-grandchildren; many nieces and
nephews; other family members and friends.
Elizabeth was a loving wife and mother and
will be missed by all who knew her.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday,
August 27, 2008, at First Baptist Church
with Pastor Walt Bernard leading the 10:30
AM service. Casket bearers were Craig
Christiansen, Bryce Hansen, Lynn
Christiansen, Tom Hansen, Bob Hansen, and
Duane Errett with interment held at the
Harlan Cemetery.

Elvin "Red" Hansen - Age 86
Elvin Almer "Red" Hansen was born on June 26,
1924 in Harlan, Iowa, the only child of Almer and Nina (Grabill)
Hansen. He was raised on a farm near Redline, Iowa and
graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1942.
On March 26, 1945, he was united in marriage to
Violette Marie Sutton in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Two children
were born to this union: Susan and James.
With the exception of one year (1950) as a semi truck
driver in Iowa City, Iowa and one year (1952) at Lockheed
Aircraft Plant in Burbank, California, where he riveted the
wings on President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s plane, Red worked
as an automobile mechanic his entire life, first for
Vandenberg Motors, then for thirty-two years at Roecker Ford
Motor Company in Harlan. He retired in 1986.
His favorite pastime was bass fishing, which he enjoyed
throughout his life and retirement.
Red died on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Creighton
University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, having
attained the age of eighty-six years, ten months, and
fourteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents and
his wife.
He is survived by his daughter Susan Steinkuehler of
Smyrna, Georgia; son James Hansen and his wife Sheryl of
Bellevue, Nebraska; four grandchildren: Kathryn and David
Wells of King George, Virginia, Michelle and Mike Reis of
St. Louis, Missouri, Daniel and Terry Steinkuehler of
Canton, Georgia, and Deanna and Rick Burroughs of Gardner,
Kansas; seven great-grandchildren: Ashley, Dustin, & Caitlyn
Reis, Lindsey Davidson, and Dillon, Derrick, and Conner
Burroughs; other family members and friends.
Rev. Dr. David Swinton officiated the 11:00 AM funeral
service on Friday, May 13, 2011 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home
in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Don Calender,
Kenneth Petersen, Jamie Hockett, Steve Grabill, Rick
Petersen, and Norval Larson. Interment was held at the

Geraldine M. Hansen - Age 86
Geraldine Mae Hansen was born on April 7, 1924 to
Ernest and Doris (Mitchell) Young in Gray, Iowa. She was
baptized in the Baptist church in Fiscus, Iowa, and attended
school through twelfth grade in Viola Center.
On May 8, 1946, she was united in marriage to Stanley
Hansen in Atlantic, Iowa. Four children were born to this
union: Roger, Richard, Victor, and Janice. Geraldine was an
excellent seamstress and worked for Jensen’s Clothing,
retiring in 1981.
She enjoyed playing her piano, especially playing hymns
at home and occasionally at church. She was a good cook and
baker and used real whipped cream on her pies.
Geraldine taught her children to do their best and to
trust each other and God. She led by example and had a big
heart, always taking care of other people. When her son
Richard died as a result of a fire at his work, she
continued her role as a mother, helping to take care of some
of the many details that became necessary. There were no
road blocks when it came to taking care of her husband of
sixty-four years.
Geraldine died on Monday, April 4, 2011 at the Salem
Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, having attained the age of
eighty-six years, eleven months, and twenty-eight days. She
was preceded in death by her parents, her son Richard,
brother Thomas, and sisters Marjorie and Janet.
She is survived by her husband Stanley Hansen of Elk
Horn, Iowa; sons Roger Hansen and his wife JoAnn of
Atlantic, Iowa and Victor Hansen and his wife Barbara of
Shelby, North Carolina; daughter Janice and her husband Paul
Scott of Coon Rapids, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; thirteen
great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
Pastor Dan Hawn officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service
on Friday, April 8, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in
Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Randy Nelson,
Paul Nelson, Keith Fiscus, John Gilliland, Bob Burton, and
Rowly Burton. Interment was held at Merrill’s Grove Cemetery
in Fiscus, Iowa.

Harold Hansen - Age 90
Harold
Emmert Hansen was born on September 9, 1918, in
rural Walnut, Iowa to Henry and Emma (Scheef)
Hansen. He was baptized at Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Walnut and graduated from Walnut High
School with the Class of 1936.
On January 22, 1942, he was united in marriage
to Mary Martin at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church
in Walnut. Harold was drafted into the United
States Army and left on his birthday in 1942,
three months before his first daughter was born.
In addition to Judith Ann, sons Jerry and Ronald
and daughter Rosemary were born to their union.
Harold’s military service included tours in
North Carolina, California, the Pacific combat
area of Attu, Kiska in the Aleutian Islands,
Kwajalein, Atoll, Leyte, the Phillippines, and
Okinawa. After being wounded in action in
Okinawa, Harold was honorably discharged on
October 16, 1945, and returned home to farm.
In 1959, the family bought an acreage on the
edge of Walnut and Harold took up carpenter work
and also worked for Mary’s brother, Carl. Harold
built several grandfather clocks and lamps and
has remodeled many kitchens and bathrooms over
the years. He was always the man that the
antique dealers turned to when they needed parts
or an item to be repaired. He always got them
looking like the original!
Harold also worked as a substitute mail carrier
for twenty years and was active in the church.
In addition to his woodworking hobby, he liked
to travel.
Harold died at the Salem Lutheran Nursing Home
in Elk Horn, Iowa, on Thursday, April 16, 2009,
having attained the age of ninety years, seven
months, and seven days. He was preceded in death
by his parents, his brother Norman Hansen,
sister Lavina Hansen, and half-sisters Henrietta
Greve and Ardelle Andersen.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years
Mary Hansen of Walnut, Iowa; his children:
Judith and her husband Delbert Brehmer of
Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jerry Hansen of Walnut,
Ronald Hansen and his wife Nancy of Walnut, and
Rosemary and her husband Bill Steinkamp of

April 18, 2009, with Father John Frost
celebrating the 10:30 AM service at St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walnut, Iowa.

Steinkamp, Chad Hansen, Sunita Boyer, Shalee
Hansen, Jay Brehmer, and Jeff Brehmer. Military
Rites were held at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in
Walnut. 
Hazel Hansen - Age 86
Hazel Hansen was born
on August 26, 1924 in Shelby County, Iowa, to Hans and Mary
(Petersen) Hansen. She was baptized and confirmed at
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. She
attended country school at Jackson No. 2 through the eighth
grade and later received her high school diploma through the
GED program.
On May 3, 1948, she was united in marriage to Norman
Hansen at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Two children were born
to this union: Randall and Dixie.
Hazel raised the children and enjoyed attending their
school programs, the free movies in Jacksonville, and the
Jacksonville Friendship Club. She was involved in a women’s
circle and bible study at the church and was briefly part of
the handbell choir. Hazel loved to play sports and played
first base on the softball team for many years.
When Norman operated the garage and service station in
Jacksonville, Hazel worked in the front office and did the
bookkeeping. She later began employment at Larsen’s Shoe
Store and then worked in the Dietary Department at Myrtue
Memorial Hospital for fifteen years, retiring in 1989. Hazel
and Norman lived in Jacksonville for thirty-nine years
before selling their home and moving into Harlan in 1987.
She enjoyed participating on bowling leagues, playing
in card groups, and traveling with the Commanders Club to
various states and to Canada.
After Norman’s death in January of 1993, Hazel
continued to live in their Harlan home and remained a member
of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
She became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community
in March of 2008 and died there on Monday, December 27,
2010, having attained the age of eighty-six years, four
months, and one day. She was preceded in death by her
parents, husband, brothers Tom and wife Mabel and Russell
and wife Dorothy; and sisters Myrtle and husband Glen Klindt
and Mabel and husband Everett Greve; sister-in-law Leota
Hansen; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Sonny and
LaVina Weiss, Harold Hansen, Ardelle and Alvin Andersen,
Herman and Henrietta Greve, and Ardell Hansen.
Hazel is survived by her son Randy Hansen of Council
Bluffs, Iowa; daughter Dixie Clark of Omaha, Nebraska;
granddaughter Jenifer Negron of Milford, Nebraska;
great-grandsons: Todd Osmun, Jr. and Kage Negron also of
Milford; brother Ed Hansen and his wife Catherine of Harlan,
Iowa; brothers-in-law Merle Hansen of Brayton, Iowa and Don
Hansen and his wife Louella of Walnut, Iowa; sister-in-law
Mary Hansen of Walnut; nieces and nephews; other family
members and friends.
Pastor Steven Chellew officiated the 11:00 AM funeral
service on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran
Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were
Jon Hansen, Robert Klindt, Jerry Klindt, Ron Hansen, Jerry
Hansen, and Todd Osmun. Interment was held at Jacksonville
Cemetery in Jacksonville.

Juanita E.
Hansen - Age 89
Juanita Elma Hansen
was born on October 21, 1918 in Logan, Iowa, to
Elmer and Elsie (Frazee) Sutton. At a young age,
her family moved to Harlan, Iowa, where she
graduated from Harlan High School.
On June 7, 1938, Juanita was united in marriage
to Marvin Hansen. To this union, one son,
Robert, was born.
Juanita was a Charter Member of the First
Baptist Church in Harlan where she was an active
member of the women’s group. She was a member of
Rebekah Lodge 286, where she obtained the
highest honor. Shortly after her 80th
birthday, Juanita moved from Harlan to Council
Bluffs, Iowa, to be closer to her family where
she became a member of Broadway Christian
Church.
In August of 2006, Juanita became a resident of
Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs and it
was there that she died on Wednesday, May 21,
2008, having attained the age of eighty-nine
years and seven months. She was preceded in
death by her parents, her husband Marvin, and
her sister and brother-in-law Georgia and Dale
Constable.
Juanita is survived by her son Robert Hansen and
his wife Karen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; her
half-sister Ruby Kagarice of Harrisonville,
Missouri, her granddaughter Jodi and her husband
Todd Strong of Council Bluffs, her grandson
Christopher Hansen and his wife Linda of
Elkhorn, Nebraska; six great-grandchildren:
Steve, Tasha, Caitlin, Tanner, Mason, and Grace;
nieces and nephews; foster grandchildren; other
family members; and friends.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, May 27,
2008 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with
Rev. Jann Osborn officiating the 11:00 AM

at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.

Mabel Eliza Hansen - Age 99
Mabel Eliza Hansen was born May 3, 1911 in Jackson Township in Shelby County, Iowa to John and Helena (Hess) White. There was Mabel and her twin - Margaret, sister Evelyn along with twin brothers Nicholas and James. Their family lived on a farm in a neighborhood called "Copenhagen" because of all the many Danish families. Their family was of Danish and Irish heritage. She and her siblings attended country school at Jackson No. 9.
On December 4, 1946, Mabel was united in marriage to Thomas Hansen at Bethlehem Lutheran Church near Jacksonville, Iowa. To this union, one child, Gloria, was born. From the many experiences on her family’s farm, she was well prepared to take on the responsibilities of a farm wife and mother. In 1953, Mabel and Thomas moved to the farm place that has been in the Hansen family since 1874, and lived there until 1981, when they moved into Harlan, Iowa.
Mabel and Thomas were faithful and active members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she belonged to various circle groups, took part in bible studies, taught Sunday School and served in offices related to the church.
Mabel died Thursday, December 16, 2010 at Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, Iowa having attained the age of ninety-nine years, seven months and thirteen days. In addition to her parents, Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, her sister Evelyn, twin sister Margaret, and twin brothers James and Nicholas.
Mabel is survived by her daughter Gloria and her husband Larry West of Council Bluffs, Iowa; grandsons: Chad West of Council Bluffs and Jeremy West and his wife Annika and their daughter Vianne of Minneapolis, Minnesota; in-laws: Irma White, Hazel Hansen and Ed and Catherine Hansen, all of Harlan; many nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
Pastor Ron Rasmussen and Rev. Annika Lister Stroope officiated the 1:00 PM funeral service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, on Monday, December 20, 2010. Marie S.
Hansen - Age 96
Marie S. Hansen, daughter of Laurits and
Alma (Petersen) Sorensen was born on November
27, 1911, in Hjallerup, Denmark. She was
baptized into the Lutheran faith after her birth
in Denmark. At the age of two, Marie and her
family sailed to the United States. Her father
had tried to sail on the Titanic but it was sold
out so they had to take another ship.
She grew to
adulthood in the Jacksonville, Iowa, area and
attended country school in Center Township.
She was confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran
Church in Jacksonville and was later united in
marriage there to Raymond Hansen on August 17,
1932. Three children were born to this
union: Ronald, Bonnie, and Verner.
After their marriage,
Raymond and Marie farmed in the Jacksonville
area where Marie remained at home raising her
children and tending to her garden. In 1971,
they moved off the farm and made their home in
Elk Horn, Iowa where they lived until Raymond’s
death on January 17, 1985. When her children
were older, Marie worked at the Salem Lutheran
Home and the Elk Horn Veterinarian office for
several years. Marie then moved to Harlan, Iowa,
where she became a member of the Immanuel
Lutheran Church as well as the Immanuel Lutheran
Church Women’s Group. Marie was a loving wife
and mother who enjoyed her family, especially
all of her grandchildren.
She died on
Saturday, October 25, 2008, at the Salem
Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, having attained
the age of ninety-six years, ten months and
twenty-eight days. In addition to her husband
and parents, she was preceded in death by her
son Ronald Hansen; grandson Robert Grabill;
great grandson Keegan Crawley; brothers Willie
and Kenneth Sorensen as well as an infant
brother.
Survivors include
her daughter Bonnie and her husband Don Grabill
of Milford, Iowa; her son Verner Hansen and his
wife Joyce of Kimballton, Iowa; her
grandchildren: Paul Grabill and his wife Beverly
of Harlan, Iowa, Dale Grabill of Sioux Rapids,
Iowa, Leann and her husband Steve Crawley of San
Jose, California, Lisa and her husband Lance
Neve of Omaha, Nebraska, Wayne Hansen and his
wife Janelle of Elk Horn, Iowa, Kevin Hansen and
his wife Joanie of Gretna, Nebraska and Stacey
Peterson of Elk Horn; eleven great
grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; her
sister Ethel Christensen of Brayton, Iowa;
nieces and nephews, other relatives and many
friends.
A funeral service
was held on Monday, October 27, 2008, at the
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa,
with Rev. Tony Ede and Rev. Ron Rasmussen
officiating the 2:00 PM service. Casket bearers
were Lance Neve, Roger Sorensen, Kevin Hansen,
Wayne Hansen, Lyle Petersen, and Paul Grabill.
Interment was held in the Jacksonville Cemetery
in Jacksonville, Iowa.

Shirley Hansen
- Age 86
Shirley Ann Hansen, daughter of
Rasmus and Harriett (Nielsen) Scott, was born on
October 12, 1922, in Harlan, Iowa. She was
baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran
Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, and attended
country school in Jackson and Center Townships.
On December 18, 1940,
Shirley was united in marriage to LuVerne Hans
Hansen in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Three sons were
born to this union: Redgie, Stephen and Monte.
In 1941, Shirley and LuVerne moved to a farm in
Monroe Township and in 1947, they moved to a
farm in Polk Township, four miles north of
Jacksonville. Shirley was a typical farm wife
and worked hard alongside her husband. She also
was an excellent cook and enjoyed spending time
in the kitchen. In 1988, Shirley and LuVerne
retired from farming and moved into Harlan.
Shirley and Luverne
enjoyed wintering in warmer climates and
spending time at their summer home by the lake
in Minnesota.
Shirley was a member of
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville where
she was active in the church circle.
Shirley died on
Sunday, August 23, 2009, at Myrtue Medical
Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age
of eighty-six years, ten months and eleven days.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her
husband LuVerne; her brother Paul and her sister
Margaret Pauley.
She is survived by her
sons: Redgie Hansen and his wife Janelle of
Scottsdale, Arizona; Stephen Hansen of Kirkman,
Iowa; and Monte Hansen and his wife Marcia of
Kirkman, Iowa; two grandchildren; her brother
Norman Scott of Manilla, Iowa; nieces; nephews;
other family members and many friends.

held on Thursday, August 27, 2009, at 11:00 AM
at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville,
Iowa, with Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiating.

William "Bill" Hansen - Age 94
William
"Bill" Dagnaes Hansen, son of William and Mary (Mathiasen)
Hansen, was born on January 14, 1915, in
Wessington, South Dakota. He attended Polk
County #8 country school. After his dad died,
Bill took over the family farm and continued to
farm throughout his life.
On February 27, 1952, Bill was united in
marriage to Bertha Christensen in Kimballton,
Iowa. Two children were born to this union:
Freda and Ivan. After their wedding, the couple
made their home outside of Jacksonville, Iowa,
where Bill continued to farm.
When Bill wasn’t busy working outside, he
enjoyed visiting with his friends at Petersen
Brothers in Jacksonville and Mickels in Harlan.
Bill and Bertha also enjoyed traveling and going
Polka dancing. One of Bill’s greatest joys was
his grandchildren and he cherished spending time
with them.
Bill never really retired from farming, but
gradually slowed down and passed his
responsibilities to his family. He continued to
live on his farm until February when he became a
resident of Salem Lutheran Nursing Home in Elk
Horn, Iowa.
Bill died on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Myrtue
Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained
the age of ninety-four years three months and
fourteen days. He is preceded in death by his
parents and his sisters Ida and Sylvia.
He is survived by his wife Bertha of Elk Horn,
Iowa; his son Ivan Hansen and his wife Janice of
Harlan, Iowa; his daughter Freda and her husband
Brent Littleton of Valley Falls, Kansas; three
grandchildren: Shawn Hansen, and Sarah and
Stephen Littleton; his sister Arlene Hansen and
her special friend Robert Kroman of Elk Horn,
Iowa; other family members and friends.
Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, April
22, 2009, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in
Harlan, Iowa, with Tom Gaer officiating the
10:30 AM service. Interment was held at the
Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa,
with Glyn Thomas, Monte Hansen, Scott Larsen,
Jim Thygesen, Mark Petersen, and William Carter
serving as casket bearers. 
Gilbert Hanson - Age 90
Arthur Gilbert Hanson, son of Bennie
and Mina (Heglin) Hanson, was born on
November 19, 1919 in Polk Township, Shelby
County, Iowa. He was a lifetime member of
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin, Iowa,
where he was baptized and confirmed. He
attended the Danway Country School and
Kirkman High School where he graduated with
the Class of 1936. After one year at Iowa
State College in Ames, Iowa, he returned
home to help on the family farm.
On February 25, 1945, he was united in marriage to
Darlene Dickinson at St. Paul’s Lutheran
Church, which was then four miles south of
Irwin. They celebrated their 65th
wedding anniversary in February of 2010.
Gilbert always operated a stock and grain farm until
1988 when he retired and moved into Harlan,
Iowa. With his son Karl and his grandson
Gabe, it makes five generations to farm this
same soil.
He enjoyed the annual family camping vacations at
Okoboji, woodworking, fishing, the County
and State Fairs, and Republican politics.
He has served on the church council, secretary of the
Beef Producers, several years on the board
of Farmers Home Administration and various
Farm Bureau boards.
Gilbert died on Sunday, August 15, 2010, at Myrtue
Medical Center in Harlan, having attained
the age of ninety years, eight months, and
twenty-seven days. He was preceded in death
by his parents, his sister Mildred, an
infant sister, and his granddaughter April
Van Meter.
He is survived by his wife Darlene Hanson of Harlan,
Iowa; his children: Peggy and her husband
Ron Doonan of Jacksonville, Iowa, Karl
Hanson and his wife Cindy of Kirkman, Iowa,
Laura and her husband Mike Albert of
Willmar, Minnesota, and Linda Van Meter of
New London, Minnesota; eight grandchildren;
fourteen great-grandchildren; other family
members and friends.
Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiated the 10:30 AM funeral
service on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin, Iowa, with
the help of Pastor Raymon Pedersen. Serving
as casket bearers were Emmert Andersen,
Delbert Hull, Nate Ahrenholtz, Gary Hanson,
Allan Ickes, and Lance Axland. Interment was
held at Danway Cemetery in Irwin, Iowa.

Hanson - Age 89
Homer
Gerald Hanson was born on January 13, 1919 in
Polk Township, Shelby County, Iowa to Andrew and
Olga (Rasmussen) Hanson. He was baptized and
confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Polk
Township, Iowa, and graduated in 1936 from
Kirkman High School.
Homer worked for Westinghouse Electric in Omaha,
Nebraska, as a city salesman for one year. On
September 19, 1954, he was united in marriage to
Phyllis Alden at Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Omaha, Nebraska. Three children were born to
this union: Holly, John, and Jay.
Homer was a long-time Farm Bureau member serving
Polk Township as Farm Bureau director as well as
a legislative and budget committee member and a
field assessor for Polk and Douglas Townships.
He also served as a Shelby County Beef Producer
Association director and served multiple terms
on the Irwin-Kirkman Community School board. He
served as a deacon and council member of St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin and was also
part of the Kirkman Alumni Association.
After his retirement from farming, he sold real
estate for Paul Pauley. He enjoyed spending time
with his family, especially attending his
grandchildren’s music concerts. He loved to play
cards and in his younger days, would love going
to dances.
Homer died on Monday, October 6, 2008, at Elm
Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa,
having attained the age of eighty-nine years,
eight months, and twenty-three days. He was
preceded in death by his parents, his wife
Phyllis, and his brothers Raynard and Alvin.
He is survived by his children: Holly and her
husband Lloyd Vandemark of Harlan, Iowa, John
Hanson and his wife Gwen of Kirkman, Iowa, and
Jay Hanson and his wife Alicia of Omaha,
Nebraska; three grandchildren, Megan, Allison,
and expecting the third shortly; his brother
Orlando Hanson and his wife Ladelle of Manilla,
Iowa, other relatives, and friends.
A funeral service was held on Friday, October
10, 2008 beginning at 10:30 AM at Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Steve
Chellew officiated with Megan Hanson, Allison
Hanson, Lloyd Vandemark, Greg Juler, Tim
Nielsen, and Gary Hanson serving as casket
bearers. Interment was at the Harlan Cemetery.

Lela G. Hanson - Age 86
Lela Grace Hanson was born on
February 1, 1924, to Raymond and Mabel (Axland)
Young on the family farm outside of Irwin, Iowa.
She was baptized at the Church of Christ in
Irwin and was an active Christian her entire
life. She attended school in Irwin and was a
graduate of the Irwin High School Class of 1941.
Lela was united in marriage to Fred Hanson on November
9, 1946, in Hiawatha, Kansas. They farmed in the
Irwin and Harlan areas until 1971. That same
year Lela began her work as a nurse’s aide at
the Baptist Home in Harlan. She worked there
helping others for over twenty years.
She was an avid reader and was always up to date on
current events and enjoyed puzzles. She also
enjoyed stimulating conversation with her family
and friends.
Lela became a resident of Manilla Manor Nursing Home in
Manilla, Iowa, on April 16, 2010, and it was
there that she died on Monday, July 19, 2010,
having attained the age of eighty-six years,
five months, and eighteen days. She was preceded
in death by her parents, her husband, and her
brothers and sisters: Mildred Struve, Jackson
Young, Donald Young, and Charlotte Doonan.
Lela is survived by her sons Steve Hanson and his wife
Mary of Altoona, Iowa and Lanny Hanson and his
wife Debra of Yelm, Washington; six
grandchildren: Mary Grace, Hillary, Jessica,
Amelia, Jacob, and Emma; her great-granddaughter
Violet; other family members and many good
friends whom she held dear.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday,
July 22, 2010 at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home
in Harlan, Iowa with Ted Sieck officiating.
Interment was at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin,
Iowa with Craig Struve, Connie Struve, Dean
Junker, Jay Schechinger, Bruce Bruck and Pam
Doonan serving as casket bearers. 
Leslie C.
Hanson - Age 65
Leslie Clifford
Hanson, son of Clifford and Phyllis (Kindschy)
Hanson, was born on July 31, 1942, in Harlan,
Iowa. He attended Harlan High School and was a
member of the class of 1960.
Leslie moved to Omaha, Nebraska when he was
nineteen. During his time in Omaha, he owned and
operated several businesses including Studio
Graphics where he did advertising and print
work. Leslie was a very talented artist and
served several years on the Omaha Summer Arts
Festival Board. He also co-owned Cornucopia
which hosted a major annual event in Omaha
called Food Fair. They started the event in 1981
and continued it for eight consecutive years.
Leslie was currently the co-proprietor of a
retail gift store called Gadgeteer. He was a
very detail oriented person and enjoyed learning
how things worked. Leslie put in many hours at
the store and could describe every piece of
merchandise he sold.
When he wasn’t working, Leslie enjoyed working
on his truck and sports cars. He kept them clean
and shiny. He had a lifelong appreciation of
art, design, books, and music. He was extremely
proud of his Norwegian heritage.
He died on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Creighton
Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska having
attained the age of sixty-five years, ten
months, and twenty-one days.
He is survived by his companion Rita Ann
Danielson of Omaha, Nebraska; his children:
Timothy Hanson and his wife Carole of Geneva,
Illinois; Cindy Johnston and her fiancé Mark
Reed of San Francisco, California; Melanie and
her husband Clint McDonald of Logan, Iowa; seven
grandchildren: Eve Johnston, Claire Herrick;
Ryan Herrick, Kate Hanson, John Hanson, Madison
Mether, and Brooklyn Mether; one great-grandson
Jayden Johnston-Nims; his parents Clifford and
Phyllis Hanson of Harlan; his sisters Bev and
her husband Roger Sorensen of Harlan and Bonnie
and her husband Bill Weilage of Council Bluffs,
Iowa; nieces, nephews, other family members and
many friends.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, June 26,
2008, beginning at 11:00 AM at the Pauley Jones
Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Ron Riley
officiated. Serving as casket bearers were Jerry
Longe, David Danielson, Ryan Herrick, Gene
Goodrich, Corey Sorensen, and Barry Sorensen.
Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.

Roger
F. Hanson - 62
Roger Frederick Hanson was born on October 28, 1945, to Arthur and Mildred (Morlok) Hanson. He was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin and remained a member there. Roger attended country school in Botna and graduated from Irwin High School. He spent one year at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska.
On November 16, 1965, Roger enlisted in the United States Air Force and served until January 20, 1969 when he was honorably discharged from the military. He returned to Shelby County and worked at Harlan Manufacturing for seventeen years. In 1987, he took his welding skills to DEBA Manufacturing in Denison, Iowa. From there he took a job at Skyjack in Atlantic, Iowa, before returning to the Harlan area and working for Variety Distributors.
Roger was an avid motorcycle rider and enjoyed going to swap meets and looking for antique motorcycles.
Roger died unexpectedly on January 9, 2008, having attained the age of sixty-two years, two months, and twelve days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Lynn Hanson.
He is survived by his three nieces: Trisha German of Colfax, Iowa, Rhonda Shanon of Mingo, Iowa, and Timbra Thies of Denison, Iowa; his aunt Lela Hanson of Harlan, Iowa; great-nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
A graveside service was held on Friday, January 11, 2008, at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin, Iowa. Pastor Ron Rasmussen led the 10:00 AM service.

Franklin Havick - Age 93
Franklin
Maynard Havick was born October 15, 1913, to
Franklin Mareclin Havick and Essie Amelia
(Bryan) Havick in Shelby County, Iowa, at
his parents’ farm home. He was the eighth
child out of a family of ten. He grew up on
his father’s farm and attended school at
Tennant, Iowa. He drove a "school bus", a
team of horses and wagon, when he was in the
eighth grade. On April 12, 1936, Franklin
was united in marriage to Evelyn Junette
Fick of Harlan, Iowa. They moved to a farm
six miles northeast of Oakland and set up
farming with his brother, Elmer, and then
later with his brother Everett. In 1944,
Franklin and Evelyn purchased a farm one
mile south. In 1955, the family moved to
their current farm near Oakland where in
earlier years he milked forty cows.
Four children were born to this union: Merry
Beth, Susan, Frank , Jr., and Paul. Franklin
lived for his family and loved spending time
with his children and grandchildren, and he
also enjoyed visiting with other family and
friends. For the last six years, he has
hosted a Fourth of July celebration on the
farm.
In 1985, Franklin semi-retired but continued
to stay on the family farm where he raised
calves and helped with the harvest. Franklin
also enjoyed his time on the family farm and
even mowed his own lawn last week.
Franklin died on Thursday, July 19, 2007, at
Alegent Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs,
Iowa, having attained the age of
ninety-three years, nine months, and four
days. He is preceded in death by his
parents; his wife, Evelyn; five brothers:
Claude, Elmer, Harold, Glen, and Everett;
and four sisters: Gladys Klitgaard, Helen
Christensen, Esther Davis, and Mabel Davis.
He is survived by his children: Merry Beth
and her husband Gary Nilan of Oakland, Iowa;
Susan and her husband Mike Hogzett of
Harlan, Iowa; Frank, Jr. Havick and his wife
Nita of Oakland, Iowa; Paul Havick and his
wife Diane of Chariton, Iowa; eight
grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, ten
great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law:
Wilma Havick of Harlan, Iowa and Betty
Hankins of Grand Island, Nebraska; nieces,
nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, July
23, 2007, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in
Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Dave Swinton officiated
the 2:00 PM service. Interment was at Harlan
Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa with Kerri Havick,
Heidi Hoffmann, Laura Hogzett, Kelli Beckel,
Robin Bennett, Missy Whitfield, and Bill
Hughes as honorary casket bearers. Serving
as casket bearers were Matt Hogzett, Harold
Hoffmann, Tom Beckel, Kyle Bennett, Kyle
Whitfield, Jake Havick, Chris Hogzett, and
Evan Havick.

James Havick - Age 67
James Franklin Havick was born on March 8,
1944 to Elmer and Wilma (Amderson) Havick in Council Bluffs,
Iowa. He grew up on the farm right outside of Avoca and
attended AvoHa High School where he was active in sports and
4-H activities. He went on to graduate from the University
of Nebraska at Omaha.
After his schooling, he enlisted in the National Guard.
He received an honorable discharge and returned to the
family farm. He was united in marriage to Margene Keating.
Two boys were born to this union: Scott and Shane.
He worked throughout the United States and Canada for
the Bekent Steel Wire Company and later for various seed
companies including Garst and DeKalb.
In March of 1980, he was united in marriage to Darlene
Peterson Stotts. He spent his free time fishing and riding
motorcycles and loved spending time with his grandchildren
and his dog, Mickey.
James spent twenty-one years working with Farm Bureau
in Clay Center, Kansas. In 2005, he retired and returned to
settle in Shenandoah, Iowa where he lived until his death on
Thursday, January 5, 2012. He had attained the age of
sixty-seven years, nine months, and twenty-nine days. He was
preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Wilma and a
step-daughter Pam Kasl.
He is survived by his wife Darlene Havick of
Shenandoah, Iowa; sons Scott Havick and his wife Brenda of
Altoona, Iowa, and Shane Havick and his wife Amy of Norwalk,
Iowa; step-children Julie and her husband Roger McQueen on
Shenandoah, Iowa, Diana and her husband Dan Dix of Humboldt,
Iowa, Lourie and her husband Steve Petsche of Council
Bluffs, Iowa, and Doug Stotts of College Springs, Iowa;
son-in-law Rob Kasl of Belleville, Kansas; six
grandchildren; fifteen step-grandchildren; one
step-great-grandchild; brothers: Bruce Havick and his wife
Kay of Harlan, Iowa and Steven Havick and his wife Jill of
Urbandale, Iowa; other family members and friends.
Pastor Steve Hetzel officiated the 10:00 AM funeral
service on Monday, January 9, 2012 at Pauley Jones Funeral
Home in Avoca, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Scott
Havick, Shane Havick, Doug Stotts, Tim Houge, Chuck Hanson,
and Carl Michael. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.

Jeannette K.
Havick - Age 90
Jeannette Havick was
born on December 16, 1917, in Jackson Township
to George and Anna (Willesen) Sorensen.
She attended Jackson No. 9 country school, as
three generations of her family, starting with
her mother. She graduated with the Class of 1934
from Harlan High School. During her last two
years of education, she studied teaching and
taught at Jackson No. 9 for a number of years.
In 1941, Jeannette was united in marriage to
Dallas Havick. Two children were born to this
union: Janis and David.
They moved in 1951 to the farm built by
Jeannette’s grandfather, seeing it become a
Century Farm in 1983. Jeannette was an active
member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in
Jacksonville and enjoyed working with her
women’s circle. She loved to write poetry for
her loved ones’ special occasions and for her
own enjoyment.
Jeannette became a resident of Elm Crest
Retirement Home in January and it was there that
she died on March 28, 2008, having attained the
age of ninety years, three months, and twelve
days. She was preceded in death by her parents
her brother; Chris Sorensen and sister Vivian
Keating.
Jeannette is survived by her husband of
sixty-six years, Dallas Havick of rural Harlan;
her daughter Janis and her husband Melvin
Dinesen of Harlan; her son David Havick and his
wife Kim of Altoona, Iowa; five grandchildren;
six great-grandchildren; her sister Arleen
(Roland) Larson of Palm Beach, Florida and her
sister-in-law Inez Sorensen of Harlan; other
family members and many friends.
A funeral service was held on Monday, March 31,
2008, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan,
Iowa. Pastor Henry Flessner led the 11:00 AM
service. Honorary casket bearers were Diane
Stewart, John Havick, Kelly Doonan, Connie
White, Sandy Walker, and Jeanette Clemons.
Serving as casket bearers were Joel Havick,
Darrel Mathiasen, Robert Heflin, Galen
Johannsen, Tom Walker, and Jason Dinesen.
Interment was held at the Jacksonville Cemetery
in Jacksonville, Iowa.

Timothy Hawn -
Age 21 of Wichita, Kansas
Tim Hawn, son of Dan and Sally (Anderson) Hawn,
was born on July 19, 1988, in Owatonna,
Minnesota. He later moved with his family to
Wichita, Kansas, where he attended and graduated
from Heights High School. Tim continued his
education at Wichita State University. He was a
huge Minnesota Vikings fan.
Tim died on Saturday, November 21, 2009, in
Wichita, Kansas, having attained the age of
twenty-one years, four months, and two days. He
is preceded in death by his maternal
grandfather, John Anderson.
He is survived by his parents, Dan and Sally;
his sister, Mandy; and his brother, Kyle all of
Wichita, Kansas; his grandmothers: LaVonne
Anderson of Harlan, Iowa and LaVerne Hawn of
Maplewood, Minnesota; other family members and
many friends. 
Bernadine A. Hayes - Age 77
Bernadine Ann Hayes,
daughter of Leo and Louisa (Schmitz) Pauley, was
born on June 2, 1930, in Panama, Iowa. She was
baptized, confirmed, and attended school at St.
Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in
Panama. On June 7, 1950, Bernadine was united in
marriage to Charles Hayes at St. Mary’s in
Panama. Five children were born to this union:
Marcia, Phyllis, Daniel, Janelle, and Patricia.
They made their home in Lincoln Township and
then Portsmouth before moving back to Lincoln
Township to Chuck’s family farm.
Bernadine worked at Myrtue Memorial Hospital
from 1959 to 1987 as a nurse’s assistant, ward
clerk and pharmacy technician before she became
a home health aid where she worked until 2007
when her health began to fail.
Bernadine was a long-time parishioner of St.
Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in
Portsmouth where she was a member of Catholic
Daughters of the Americas Court St. Maria
Goretti No. 2498 of Portsmouth and the
Portsmouth Legion Auxiliary. She was also a
member of the Portsmouth Community Choir and the
St. Mary’s Church Choir.
Bernadine died peacefully at her home on
Tuesday, April 15, 2008, surrounded by her
family having attained the age of seventy-seven
years, ten months, and thirteen days. She is
preceded in death by her parents; her brothers
Jerry and Walter; her sister Thelma; her
grandson Christopher Allen and
great-granddaughter Ashley Shropshire.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-seven
years, Chuck Hayes of Portsmouth, Iowa; their
children: Marcia Nelson of Kimballton, Iowa;
Phyllis Allen and Dan Hayes both of Harlan,
Iowa; Janelle Christensen and her special friend
Nick Journigan of Maryville, Missouri; and
Patricia Hayes of Harlan; nine grandchildren and
fifteen great-grandchildren; her siblings:
Lucille Wendt of Woodbine, Iowa; Alfred Pauley
and his wife Prune of Panama, Iowa; Mary Ella
and her husband Gary Wilke and Janice and her
husband Gerald Waltz all of Portsmouth, Iowa;
and Kenneth Pauley and his wife Eileen of
Panama; nieces, nephews, other family members
and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday,
April 19, 2008 at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima
Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Rev. John
Dorton officiated the 10:00 AM service with
burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth.
Serving as casket bearers were: Paul Waltz,
Dennis Wilke, Bill Wendt, Kerry Pauley, Jerry
Pauley, and Chuck Wendt.

Charles “Chuck” E.
Hayes - Age 79
Charles Edward Hayes was born on a farm East
of Portsmouth, Iowa, on November 3, 1930, the
only son of Charles and Louisa (Andersen) Hayes.
Due to the death of his parents. When he was
only 11 months old, Chuck was raised by his
grandparents, Anton and Louise Andersen. He
attended country school and graduated from
Harlan High School with the class of 1948.
After high school, Chuck worked at the Cox Elevator in
Tennant, Iowa driving trucks until January of
1949 when he enlisted in the United States Army.
He served in the Medical Company of the 15th
Infantry Regiment until his honorable discharge
on January 26, 1950. He then was a member of the
United States Army Reserve until being honorably
discharged in 1960.
On June 7, 1950, he was united in marriage to Bernadine
Pauley at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic
Church in Panama, Iowa. Five children were born
to this union: Marcia, Phyllis, Dan, Janelle and
Patricia. After their marriage, Chuck and
Bernadine continued to live in Shelby County
where Chuck was employed for several years as a
carpenter for the Grote Construction Company and
then was employed by Western Iowa Pork in Harlan
until he retired in 1993.
Charles developed an entertainment character named
"Foster" Hayes based on the television character
"Foster" Brooks, a tipsy comedian. His first
appearance was at the Portsmouth Centennial in
1982, He then went on to appear at clubs,
banquets, class reunions, the Iowa Meat
Processors Association and the Martin Family
Show. These appearances continued until 2007.
Charles "Foster" Hayes died at his home, the house he
was born in, on Sunday, October 10, 2010, having
attained the age of seventy-nine years, eleven
months and eight days. He was preceded in death
by his wife, Bernadine, his parents, grandson,
Christopher James Allen, and great
granddaughter, Ashley Jordon Shropshire.
He is survived by his children: Marcia Nelson of
Kimballton, Iowa; Phyllis Allen of Harlan, Iowa;
Dan Hayes of Harlan; Janelle Christensen and
friend Nick Journigan of Elmo, Missouri and
Patricia Hayes of Harlan, Iowa; nine
grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren,
other relatives and many friends.
Rev. John Dorton celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial
on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at
St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth.
American Legion Post No. 547 had Military Rites
at the St. Mary’s Cemetery with Tim Waltz, Chuck
Wendt, Keri Pauley, Jerry Pauley, Dennis Wilke,
and Ron Gau serving as casket bearers.
