Leora F. Hamdorf - Age 83
Leora Francis Hamdorf, the daughter of Jesse
N. and Marie Ronnfeldt Grooms, was born on a
farm near Hancock, Iowa on October 23, 1923.
She attended country school near Hancock and
graduated from Hancock High School in 1941.
Leora was united in marriage to Orville
"Bud" Hamdorf on July 5, 1948 in Avoca,
Iowa. To this union three children were
born: Ruth, Terry and Rodney. After their
marriage they farmed east of Avoca for five
years and then south of Walnut, Iowa until
1966 when they moved to their home near the
Harlan Airport. Leora contracted polio in
1952 but that did not stop her from doing
some of the things she enjoyed like
crocheting, crossword puzzles, being on her
lap top computer and baking. She also took
many trips to Branson, Missouri for a
reunion of other Polio victims.
Leora died on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at
Creighton University Medical Center in
Omaha, Nebraska having attained the age of
eighty-three years, seven months and
thirteen days. She was preceded in death by
her parents, her husband Bud, who died in
1997, infant son Rodney and her brother,
Wayne Grooms.
Leora is survived by her children: Ruth
Hamdorf and Terry Hamdorf, both of Harlan,
Iowa; sisters-in-law: Orlene Scott and Alta
Hansen, both of Harlan, Iowa and Wilma
Throener of West Point, Nebraska;
brother-in-law Delner Hamdorf and his wife
Beverly of Morrison, Colorado; other
relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, June
9, 2007 at 10:30 AM at the Pauley Jones
Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with Wayne
Paulsen as the clergy. Serving as casket
bearers were Dale Klindt, Dwight Carroll,
John Plagman, Shane Havick, Mark Sieh and
Duane Johnson. Interment was held at the
Graceland Cemetery in Avoca, Iowa.
Brenda L. Hansen Hamilton - Age 40
Brenda Lee Hansen Hamilton was born on August 26, 1965 at Harlan, Iowa. She was one of four children born to Wayne and Lois Jensen Hansen. She was baptized and confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. In her youth she was active in 4-H and Luther League.
Brenda attended elementary and high school at Elk Horn-Kimballton Public School in Elk Horn, Iowa, graduating with the class of 1983. She then attended and graduated from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska in 1987 with a B.A. degree in Education, English and Language Arts. She received her Masters degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1996. Brenda taught highschool English in Elk Horn-Kimballton and Walnut Community High Schools.
Brenda was united in marriage to Ron Hamilton on July 29, 1989 at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church, Elk Horn, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Zachary, Dillan and Madison. Family and friends were very important to Brenda. She was a proud and loving wife and mother, and never missed an event that her children were involved with. She was active at Calvary Baptist Church in Walnut, Iowa where she was a member, served as Sunday School Superintendent and taught Bible School. She often held and lead Bible studies at her home for a group of ladies. Brenda was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was highly respected and admired by the entire Walnut community and surrounding areas.
Brenda died on Friday, September 23, 2005 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, just twenty eights days after her fortieth birthday. She was preceded in death by her father, Wayne Hansen on September 8, 2005.
She is survived by her husband, Ron and children, Zachary Wayne, Dillan James and Madison May of Walnut; her mother Lois Hansen of Harlan, Iowa; her sister, Becky Eskov and her husband Larry of Harlan, Iowa; two brothers, Bruce Hansen and his wife Ann of Atlantic, Iowa and Brent Hansen and his wife Linda of Avoca, Iowa, thirty four nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.
Marvin W. Hamilton - Age 76
Marvin Wayne
Hamilton, the son of Robert and Mildred Osborn
Hamilton, was born on August 23, 1930 in Elk
City, Nebraska. He attended grade school in
Elk City and Omaha and high school at Omaha
Tech until the eleventh grade. Marvin was
inducted to the United States Army on August
27, 1951. He was stationed in Korea where he
earned a service medal with two bronze
service stars. He was honorably discharged
July 15, 1953.
Marvin
was united in marriage to Jenny Wallace on
December 26, 1951 in Papillion, Nebraska. To
this union seven children were born. Marvin
worked at various construction jobs; drove
milk truck and also worked at St. Mary's
Body Shop. In 1953 they started farming near
Underwood, Iowa, later moving to their home
south of Avoca where he farmed until his
retirement. Marvin enjoyed camping and
fishing. He was mechanically inclined and
often rebuilt his own tractors. He did the
work on their home when they added on to it;
even installing the furnace. He always had
his sidekick next to him on the farm, his
dog Makita.
Marvin died at the Avoca Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center in Avoca, Iowa on
Thursday, April 5, 2007 having attained the
age of seventy-six years, seven months and
thirteen days. He is preceded in death by
his parents, twin grandsons, Jessie and
Jerod Hamilton; one brother Wendel Hamilton
and his daughter-in-law, Brenda Hamilton.
Survivors include his wife Jenny of rural
Avoca, Iowa; his children: Cheryl and her
husband Wes Jensen of Council Bluffs, Iowa;
Robert Hamilton of Council Bluffs, Iowa;
Cindy and her husband Scott Knop of Walnut,
Iowa; LeaAnn Van Horn of Underwood, Iowa;
John Hamilton an his wife Kay of Crescent,
Iowa; Ron Hamilton of Walnut, Iowa; Edwin
Hamilton and his wife Colleen of Atlantic,
Iowa; nineteen grandchildren; thirteen great
grandchildren; one sister, Gayle and her
husband Larry Osburn of Omaha, Nebraska;
sister-in-law Rose Marie Hamilton; nieces,
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday,
April 7, 2007 at the Calvary Baptist Church
in Walnut, Iowa. Casket bearers were Jeremy
Jensen, Brian Hamilton, Zachary Hamilton,
Aaron Van Horn, Eric Van Horn, Tyler
Hamilton, Garret Knop and Dillan Hamilton.
Interment was in Layton Township Cemetery in
Walnut.
Belva Hansen -
Age 96
Belva
Langer Hansen died on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at
the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca,
Iowa. She had attained the age of ninety six
years, three months and twenty-one days.
Belva was born January 1, 1912 in Minden, Iowa
to Kate (Haas) and Peter Langer, Jr. She was the
second of four children and grew up in Minden.
At the age of seven her parents died of the
Spanish influenza and she was raised by her
Grandmother Haas. Belva was confirmed in the
Minden Congregational Church and graduated from
Minden High School with the Class of 1929. After
graduation she worked in various households and
on December 2, 1931 she married Wilbert Hansen
of Avoca.
Belva and Wilbert lived on a Langer farm south
of Minden for awhile but later moved to a farm
east of Corley, Iowa. They were the parents of
five children, three of whom died in infancy. In
the 1940's Wilbert and Belva lived in various
Kansas locations as Wilbert worked in
construction. In 1945 they returned to Avoca to
live, where Belva had jobs at several local
cafes.
In the 1950's Belva worked as a telephone
operator until Avoca went to dial up. She also
worked during the early 1960's as a cook in the
Avoca schools. Belva was instrumental in helping
her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Roger
Kubik get into the restaurant business. She
worked at Kubiks Kitchen and later at the
Villager in Walnut, Iowa. She was always ready
to help her children and grandchildren in their
projects and businesses. Belva loved working and
meeting people in the restaurant business. She
was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Belva was preceded in death by her parents in
1918; her husband Wilbert in 1972; three
children: Wilbert, Jr., Kenneth and Karol; two
grandchildren, Tracy and Scott Kubik; her
brothers, Milton and Chester Langer and her
sister, Bernadette Stroebele.
She is survived by her daughters: Barbara (Mrs.
Robert) Brown and Betty (Mrs. Roger Kubik), all
of Avoca; her grandchildren: Wanda Schuler of
Red Bluff, California, Janet (Mrs. Alan) Graham
of Avoca; Kerri Connell of Omaha, Nebraska and
Angela (Mrs. James) Dimmitt of Hamlin, Iowa;
five great grandchildren and two great, great
grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, other
relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, April
26, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich
as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were
Dan Connell, Alan Graham, Jeremiah Thompson,
James Dimmitt, Ryan Graham and John Stroebele.
Interment was held at the Graceland Cemetery,
Avoca, Iowa.
Dewey E. Hansen
- Age 88
Dewey Ernest Hansen, the son of Ernest and
Mamie Ingwers Hansen, was born on November
28, 1918 in Fairview Township, Shelby
County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed
in the First Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa.
Dewey attended country school Fairview
Township School #1.
On September 19, 1945, Dewey was united in
marriage to Alta Berniece Hamdorf in Council
Bluffs, Iowa. To this union four children
were born. After their marriage they resided
on the home place east of Corley where they
were engaged in farming. Dewey enjoyed
farming all of his life, the stock car
races, fishing and going to dances in Corley
and Avoca.
Dewey died at his
home, that he has lived on since he was
three months old, east of Corley on
Wednesday, January 24, 2007 having attained
the age of eighty-eight years, one month and
twenty-seven days. He is preceded in death
by his parents; his sister Alvina Jacobsen;
brother Walter Hansen; one granddaughter,
Amanda Dexter and one step grandson, Tylor
Toyne.
He is survived by his wife, Alta of Harlan,
Iowa; his children: James Hansen and his
wife Karen of Walnut, Iowa; Vernon Hansen
and his wife Lisa Martin-Hansen of Tucker,
Georgia; Darrell Hansen and his wife Lana of
Harlan, Iowa and Nadine and her husband
Nathan Dexter of Casper, Wyoming; twelve
grandchildren; six great grandchildren;
sister Hazel and her husband Howard Schnieder of Avoca, Iowa and a sister-in-law
Alverta Hansen of Audubon, Iowa; nieces,
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Services were held on Saturday, January 27,
2007 at 1:30 PM at the Pauley Jones Funeral
Home in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich
as the clergy. Serving as pall bearers were
Kevin Hansen, Nathan Hansen, Clayton Dexter,
Dustin Hansen, Philip Hansen and Ethan
Dexter. Serving as Honorary Bearers were
Tiffany Siffring, Leland Dexter, Alycia
Hansen, Spenser Dexter, Jade Hansen and
Maxwell Hansen. Interment was held in the
Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.
Elizabeth A. Hansen - Age 70
Elizabeth Ann Hansen, the daughter of Myron
Baldwin and Ethel Caroline (Gretzer)
Allerton, was born on March 2, 1936 at
Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was baptized at
St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Council
Bluffs, Iowa. Elizabeth attended Abraham
Lincoln school graduating with the class of
1954. She then attended Mercy School of
Nursing, graduating in 1957.
On April 4, 1957, Elizabeth was united in
marriage to Bernard "Bud" Russell Hansen at
St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Council
Bluffs. To this union, five children were
born: Susan, Dean, Sharon, David and Sandra.
After their marriage, the couple resided on
their farm near Portsmouth.
Elizabeth was a member of the Tennant
Methodist Church and the Shelby County
Historical Society. She enjoyed stamp
collecting, flowers, gardening, art and
taking photographs. Her family was very
important to her and she loved spending time
with them. Elizabeth also liked to bake and
would often bring baked goods to her
family's homes when she visited. She loved
to travel and attending family reunions.
Elizabeth also enjoyed taking care of her
mother and her grandchildren were always on
her mind. Her family was the root of her
life and if she ever had any spare time she
would spend it with her children and
grandchildren.
Elizabeth died at her home on Thursday,
March 30, 2006, near Portsmouth, Iowa,
having attained the age of seventy years and
twenty-eight days. She was preceded in death
by her father and her grandson, Gregory
Petersen.
Survivors include her husband,
Bernard "Bud" of Portsmouth, Iowa; her
children: Susan and her husband, Andrew
Austin of Omaha, Nebraska; Dean Hansen and
his wife, Lori of Avoca, Iowa; Sharon and
her husband, Kalvin Petersen of Alta, Iowa;
David Hansen and his wife, Annette of
Muskogee, Oklahoma; Sandra and her husband,
Mike Davis of Alta, Iowa; her mother, Ethel
Allerton of Council Bluffs, Iowa; thirteen
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;
brothers: John Allerton and his wife, Cherry
of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Keith Allerton of
Omaha, Nebraska; other relatives and many
friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday,
April 1, 2006 at 1:00 PM at the Pauley Jones
Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with Jim
Boardman serving as the clergy. Casket
bearers were Elizabeth's grandsons: Joel
Hansen, Kole Petersen, Michael Hansen, Logan
Davis, Luke Hansen, Brad Austin and Charles
Petersen. Interment was in the Shelby
Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa.
George Hansen - Age
92
George
Woodrow Hansen was born on December 5, 1912,
to Marianne Sorensen and Christian David
Hansen in Harlan, Iowa. He attended school
and grew to adulthood in this area.
On March 10, 1937, George married Gladys
Louise Sorensen at the Altamont Baptist
Church near Harlan, Iowa. The couple enjoyed
being married for sixty-three years. To this
union, Charles and Marlene were born.
George and Gladys farmed in the Harlan and
Walnut area for over fifty years. In 1996,
they moved to Harlan. George was a member of
the Calvary Baptist Church in Walnut, Iowa.
For many years, George and Gladys looked
forward to Friday evening Bible studies, and
never forgot the lifelong friendships of
that close net group. George cherished every
moment spent with his wife, children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
George died on Sunday, December 26, 2004 at
the Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
in Avoca, Iowa, having attained the age of
ninety-two years, and twenty-one days. In
addition to his parents and his wife, he was
preceded in death by six sisters, Emma
Margretha, Stella Johanna, Clara Elizabeth
Olson, Ella Marie Petersen, Hazel Mildred
Morgan, and Laura Josephine Larsen and four
brothers, Earl Abraham, Arnold David,
Charley Daniel, and Harry Emanuel.
George is
survived by his children, Charles Hansen and
his wife, Nancy of Rochester, Minnesota,
Marlene and her husband, Leonard LeMaster of
Council Bluffs, Iowa; grandchildren, Heidi
(Hansen) and her husband Kuri Alikae;
Heather (Hansen) and her husband Dustin
Kingsley; Chad Hansen and his wife Nycole,
Lonnie LeMaster and his wife, Lisa;
great-grandchildren, Makayla and Elleigh
Hansen, Noah Kingsley, Emily, Evie and Ethan
LeMaster; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, December 28, 2004, at
Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa,
at 10:00 A.M. with Pastor Paul Hutchins
officiating. Interment was in the Harlan
Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, with Heidi
Elizabeth and Kuri Aden Alikae, Heather
Marie and Dustin Wayne and Noah Kingsley,
Chad Daniel, Makayla and Elleigh Hansen,
Nycole Marie, Lonnie Robert, Lisa Jane and
Emily, Avie, and Ethan LeMaster .
Irene M. Hansen -
Age 83
Irene Marie Hansen, daughter of Henry and
Blanche (Keairnes) Bieker was born on August
25, 1922, in Defiance, Iowa. She was
baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's
Catholic Church and attended St. Paul's
Catholic School in Defiance graduating with
the Class of 1940. During high school,
Irene played basketball and after
graduation, worked with her father and uncle
at the Defiance Telephone Company.
On May
28, 1942, Irene was united in marriage to
Orville "Herk" Hansen at Defiance, Iowa.
Three children were born to this union.
After their marriage, the family made their
home in Harlan. Irene and Herk loved to
attend the many dances at area dance halls.
Irene was a very artistic person and it was
seen in her many quilts that she made by
hand. She loved watching television,
especially the Atlanta Braves baseball team,
the Iowa Hawkeyes and Fox News.
Irene died at her
home in Harlan on October 12, 2005, having
attained the age of eighty-three years, one
month and eighteen days. In addition
to her parents, Irene was preceded in death
by her husband, "Herk", her grandson, Trevor
Erickson, and her brothers, Ed and Leo
Bieker.
She is
survived by her children:
Lesly and her
husband, Eldon Erickson; Jim Hansen and his
wife Sandy, all of Harlan, and Lynn Sparks
of Des Moines, Iowa; her grandchildren:
Sherry Hansen, Jeff Hansen and his wife
Chris, Mark Hansen, Kara Sparks and James
Sparks, II; her great grandchildren: Gina,
Cody, Dylan, Alex and Jacob Hansen; her
sister, Dorothy Stenzel of Plainfield,
Illinois; her sisters-in-law: Mildred "Mick"
Bieker of Harlan and Doy Hansen Slay of
Florida; nieces and nephews; her wonderful
companion, Ozzie and many friends.
Memorial
Services were held on Saturday, October 15,
2005, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in
Harlan, Iowa, at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Al
Hazelton officiating. Interment was in the
Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
Juanita E.
Hansen - Age 89
Juanita Elma Hansen
was born on October 21, 1918 in Logan, Iowa, to
Elmer and Elsie (Frazee) Sutton. At a young age,
her family moved to Harlan, Iowa, where she
graduated from Harlan High School.
On June 7, 1938, Juanita was united in marriage
to Marvin Hansen. To this union, one son,
Robert, was born.
Juanita was a Charter Member of the First
Baptist Church in Harlan where she was an active
member of the women’s group. She was a member of
Rebekah Lodge 286, where she obtained the
highest honor. Shortly after her 80th
birthday, Juanita moved from Harlan to Council
Bluffs, Iowa, to be closer to her family where
she became a member of Broadway Christian
Church.
In August of 2006, Juanita became a resident of
Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs and it
was there that she died on Wednesday, May 21,
2008, having attained the age of eighty-nine
years and seven months. She was preceded in
death by her parents, her husband Marvin, and
her sister and brother-in-law Georgia and Dale
Constable.
Juanita is survived by her son Robert Hansen and
his wife Karen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; her
half-sister Ruby Kagarice of Harrisonville,
Missouri, her granddaughter Jodi and her husband
Todd Strong of Council Bluffs, her grandson
Christopher Hansen and his wife Linda of
Elkhorn, Nebraska; six great-grandchildren:
Steve, Tasha, Caitlin, Tanner, Mason, and Grace;
nieces and nephews; foster grandchildren; other
family members; and friends.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, May 27,
2008 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with
Rev. Jann Osborn officiating the 11:00 AM
service. Serving as casket bearers were: Steve
Davis, Tanner Strong, Tom Hansen, Chris Hansen,
Todd Strong, and Phil Hansen. Interment was held
at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
Lydia O. Hansen -
Age 92
Lydia
Olivia Hansen, daughter of Thyge S. and Mary
(Jensen) Thygesen, was born on October 12,
1913 near Audubon, Iowa. She was baptized
and confirmed at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in
Audubon and attended Douglas Township
country school in rural Audubon County,
Iowa.
On May 22, 1932,
Lydia was united in marriage to Nels P.
Hansen at Audubon, Iowa. Four daughters were
born to this union: Betty, Joann, Jean and
Susan. After their marriage, Lydia and Nels
made their home on the Hansen family farm
near Irwin, Iowa where Nels farmed with his
father. They continued to make their home on
the family farm where Lydia was a loving
wife and mother. Nels died on October 10,
1985, and a short time after his death,
Lydia made her home in Harlan.
She was a quiet
lady and loved gardening, canning, and
baking. Lydia enjoyed animals and was a hard
worker.
Lydia remained
in Harlan until 1995, when she became a
resident of the Salem Retirement Home in Elk
Horn, Iowa, and in 1998 relocated to the
Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa. It was
there that she died on Thursday, November 3,
2005, having attained the age of ninety-two
years and twenty-two days. In addition to
her parents and husband, Nels, Lydia was
preceded in death by her sisters and
brothers: Anna Jensen, Bertha Knudsen,
Minnie Petersen, Laura Knudsen, Katie
Lambertz, Chris Thygesen and Willie Thygesen.
Lydia is
survived by her daughters: Betty and her
husband Alvin Pospisil of Cole Camp,
Missouri; Joann and her husband Darrell
Mitchell of Ute, Iowa; Jean and her husband
Ned Freestone of Westcliffe, Colorado and
Susan and her husband Donald Gessert of Elk
Horn, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren; numerous
great grandchildren and great-great
grandchildren; nieces and nephews, other
relatives and many friends.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, November 7, 2005, at
Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa,
at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Al Hazelton
officiating. Interment was in the Merrill’s
Grove Cemetery in rural Harlan, Iowa, with
David Pospisil, Kelly Barton, Mark Pospisil,
Darrin Gessert, Brian Gessert, Kelly Gessert,
and Mike Mitchell.
Wayne C. Hansen -
Age 82
Wayne
Charles Hansen, the son of Marinus and Elsie
(Shelor) Hansen, was born on December 26,
1922, in Jacksonville, Iowa. He was baptized
and confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran
Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. Wayne attended
school at Copenhagen Jackson No. 9 Country
School in Jacksonville.
On August 18,
1944, he enlisted in the United States Navy
at Harlan, Iowa and served as an
Anti-Aircraft Gunnery Instructor during
World War II and was awarded an American
Area Campaign Medal as well as World War II
Victory Medal. Wayne was honorably
discharged on April 24, 1946. After his
discharge, he returned to Shelby County.
On June 26 1946,
Wayne was united in marriage to Lois Jensen
at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in
Jacksonville, Iowa. Four children were born
to this union: Becky, Bruce, Brent and
Brenda. After their marriage, the couple
farmed north of Walnut for two years before
moving to a farm in Monroe Township, which
they purchased from his wife’s parents in
1949. After forty-two years of farming, they
retired and moved to Harlan, Iowa.
Farming was a
very special part of Wayne’s life and
conserving the soil was important to him. He
served as a Shelby County Soil Conservation
Commissioner for twelve years. He was one of
the first ones in the area to build terraces
and do no-till planting. Wayne was an active
member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in
Jacksonville and held various offices on the
church council. After retiring from farming,
his hobby was working with wood in his shop.
Miniature horse hitch projects were one of
his specialties as were many of the things
he made with wood. Wayne enjoyed camping,
and spending time in Arizona for several
winters. He also liked playing a game of
cards and visiting with friends. His family
was so special to him and he was proud of
every one of them.
Wayne died on
Thursday, September 8, 2005, at Myrtue
Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, having
attained the age of eighty-two years, eight
months, and thirteen days. In addition to
his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by
his brother, LuVerne.
Survivors
include his wife, Lois of Harlan, Iowa; his
children: Becky and her husband, Larry Eskov
of Harlan, Iowa; Bruce Hansen and his wife,
Ann of Atlantic, Iowa; Brent Hansen and his
wife, Linda of Avoca, Iowa; Brenda and her
husband, Ron Hamilton of Walnut, Iowa; nine

were held on Saturday, September 10, 2005,
at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in
Jacksonville, Iowa, at 10:30 A.M. with Rev.
Ron Rasmussen officiating. Military Rites
were conducted in Jacksonville Cemetery in
Jacksonville, Iowa, by the American Legion
Post No. 150 and the Shelby County VFW Post
No. 941. Serving as honorary casket bearers
were Bob Petersen, James Kemp, Victor
Hoogensen, Charles Martens, Gary Clausen,
Nick White, and Harvey Greve. Serving as
casket bearers were Dan Hansen, Zachary
Hamilton, Matt Hansen, Dillan Hamitlon,
David Eskov, and Adam Hansen.
Leslie C.
Hanson - Age 65
Leslie Clifford
Hanson, son of Clifford and Phyllis (Kindschy)
Hanson, was born on July 31, 1942, in Harlan,
Iowa. He attended Harlan High School and was a
member of the class of 1960.
Leslie moved to Omaha, Nebraska when he was
nineteen. During his time in Omaha, he owned and
operated several businesses including Studio
Graphics where he did advertising and print
work. Leslie was a very talented artist and
served several years on the Omaha Summer Arts
Festival Board. He also co-owned Cornucopia
which hosted a major annual event in Omaha
called Food Fair. They started the event in 1981
and continued it for eight consecutive years.
Leslie was currently the co-proprietor of a
retail gift store called Gadgeteer. He was a
very detail oriented person and enjoyed learning
how things worked. Leslie put in many hours at
the store and could describe every piece of
merchandise he sold.
When he wasn’t working, Leslie enjoyed working
on his truck and sports cars. He kept them clean
and shiny. He had a lifelong appreciation of
art, design, books, and music. He was extremely
proud of his Norwegian heritage.
He died on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Creighton
Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska having
attained the age of sixty-five years, ten
months, and twenty-one days.
He is survived by his companion Rita Ann
Danielson of Omaha, Nebraska; his children:
Timothy Hanson and his wife Carole of Geneva,
Illinois; Cindy Johnston and her fiancé Mark
Reed of San Francisco, California; Melanie and
her husband Clint McDonald of Logan, Iowa; seven
grandchildren: Eve Johnston, Claire Herrick;
Ryan Herrick, Kate Hanson, John Hanson, Madison
Mether, and Brooklyn Mether; one great-grandson
Jayden Johnston-Nims; his parents Clifford and
Phyllis Hanson of Harlan; his sisters Bev and
her husband Roger Sorensen of Harlan and Bonnie
and her husband Bill Weilage of Council Bluffs,
Iowa; nieces, nephews, other family members and
many friends.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, June 26,
2008, beginning at 11:00 AM at the Pauley Jones
Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Ron Riley
officiated. Serving as casket bearers were Jerry
Longe, David Danielson, Ryan Herrick, Gene
Goodrich, Corey Sorensen, and Barry Sorensen.
Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
Phyllis J. Hanson -
Age 75
Phyllis Jean Hanson, the daughter of John
and Cora Beasley Alden, was born on June 8,
1929, at Omaha, Nebraska. She was baptized
and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Omaha, Nebraska. Phyllis attended school at
Omaha graduating from Benson High School.
After high school, Phyllis worked as an
executive secretary in Omaha.
On September 19,
1954, Phyllis was united in marriage to
Homer Hanson at the Immanuel Lutheran Church
in Omaha, Nebraska. Three children were born
to this union: Holly, John and Jay. After
their marriage, Phyllis worked at the Shelby
County Extension Office for two years. She
was much more than a homemaker. She was a
devoted wife, working side by side with her
husband on their farm. A loving mother,
supporting and following every activity her
children were involved in and a proud
grandmother - no matter the cost at the
Cherry Pie Auction.
Phyllis was a
member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Harlan, Iowa, where she was very active in
several church organizations as well as a
member of the Polk Improvement Club, Myrtue
Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, and was
a general election worker for Shelby County.
She loved to travel and shopping was one of
her biggest passions.
Phyllis died on
Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at Jennie
Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa,
having attained the age of seventy-five
years, six months and seven days. She was
preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors
include her husband, Homer of Kirkman, Iowa;
her children, Holly and her husband, Lloyd
Vandemark of Harlan, Iowa; John Hanson and
his wife, Gwen of Kirkman, Iowa; Jay Hanson
of Omaha, Nebraska; two grandchildren: Megan
and Allison Hanson of Kirkman, Iowa; her
brother, Robert MacDougall and his wife Lana
of Bend, Oregon; other relatives and a great
many friends.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, December 18, 2004, at
the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan,
Iowa, at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Heather Ploen
officiating. Interment was in the Harlan
Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, with Gary Hanson,
Orlando Hanson, Lance Hanson, Karen
Williams, Ladelle Hanson, Barb Brundige, and
Lana Cadwell serving as honorary casket
bearers. Serving as casket bearers were Tim
Nielsen, Megan Hanson, Greg Juhler, Brian
Brundige, Allison Hanson, and Warren Howe.
Roger
F. Hanson - 62
Roger Frederick Hanson was born on October 28, 1945, to Arthur and Mildred (Morlok) Hanson. He was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin and remained a member there. Roger attended country school in Botna and graduated from Irwin High School. He spent one year at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska.
On November 16, 1965, Roger enlisted in the United States Air Force and served until January 20, 1969 when he was honorably discharged from the military. He returned to Shelby County and worked at Harlan Manufacturing for seventeen years. In 1987, he took his welding skills to DEBA Manufacturing in Denison, Iowa. From there he took a job at Skyjack in Atlantic, Iowa, before returning to the Harlan area and working for Variety Distributors.
Roger was an avid motorcycle rider and enjoyed going to swap meets and looking for antique motorcycles.
Roger died unexpectedly on January 9, 2008, having attained the age of sixty-two years, two months, and twelve days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Lynn Hanson.
He is survived by his three nieces: Trisha German of Colfax, Iowa, Rhonda Shanon of Mingo, Iowa, and Timbra Thies of Denison, Iowa; his aunt Lela Hanson of Harlan, Iowa; great-nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
A graveside service was held on Friday, January 11, 2008, at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin, Iowa. Pastor Ron Rasmussen led the 10:00 AM service.
Roy D. Harris - Age 73
Roy Duane Harris, MD, the son of Ernest E. and Ethel G. Holaday Harris, was born on July 16, 1930, in Lincoln Township, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Wiota Methodist Church in Wiota, Iowa. Duane attended school at Wiota Consolidated School and was a member of the graduating class of 1947. Duane entered into the United States Army National Guard and was honorably discharged as First Lieutenant in July of 1961. He attended the University of Iowa, the University of Nebraska and Creighton University School of Medicine, where he was awarded his Medical Degree on June 7, 1961.
After receiving his Medical Degree, he worked as a Family Practice Physician in Anita, Iowa for six years. In 1968, he joined the Donlin-Markham Family Practice in Harlan, Iowa. In 1993, he joined the Shelby County Medical Clinic, where he continued to practice until his retirement on January 27, 2004.
On June 5, 1993, Duane was united in marriage to Cynthia M. (Assman) Schaben in Harlan, Iowa. Duane became a member of the Catholic Church in 2002. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa.
He was a member of the Omaha Rose Society, Harlan Booster Club and the Eight Ball Club. His hobbies included model airplanes, carpentry, sailing, playing golf, building boats, bicycling, traveling, scuba diving, aviation and reading, especially history and poetry.
Dr. Harris died on Tuesday, February 17, 2004, at his residence in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-three years, seven months and one day. In addition to his parents, Duane was preceded in death by his brother, Loren Harris, his sister, Eula Harris, his brother, Roland Dean Harris and a grandson, Daniel Burk. Survivors include his wife, Cindy of Harlan, Iowa; his children, Corrine and her husband, Rick Burk of Hallsville, Missouri; David Harris and his wife, Twila of Marne, Iowa; Julie McKenny of Thornton, Colorado; Tom Harris and his wife, Kathy of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; Craig Harris of Harlan, Iowa; his step-children, Linda and her husband, Jack Scheffler of Harlan, Iowa; Kevin Chadwick and his wife, Carol of Harlan, Iowa; Curt Chadwick and his wife, Sandy of Harlan, Iowa; Teresa and her husband, Mike Stinn of Harlan, Iowa; Brenda Chadwick and Brad Wright of Harlan, Iowa; Michelle and her husband, Mark Brezinski of Omaha, Nebraska; Travis Schaben and his wife, Bobbi of Grimes, Iowa; Todd Schaben of Omaha, Nebraska; eighteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; fifteen step grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; his brother and sister, Garald Harris and his wife, Barb of Wiota, Iowa; Kathleen and her husband, Barry Biggs of Des Moines, Iowa; other relatives and a great many friends.

Virginia Hartmann
Age - 84
Virginia V. Hartmann, daughter of Hallie and
Lois (Evans) Bartrug was born on July 23,
1922, in Harlan, Iowa. She attended school
in Harlan and graduated with the class of
1940. After high school, Virginia was
employed with the Ration Board during World
War II.
In 1944, Virginia was united in marriage to
Lewis Nelson at the Methodist Church in
Harlan, Iowa. Four children were born to
this union: Connie, Bruce, Brian and Todd.
They moved to Michigan for a short time
before returning to Harlan in 1955 to raise
their family. On October 13, 1960, she was
married to Lenus A. Hartmann of Harlan.
Virginia worked at Monahan Loan and later as
a cashier at Mickels and Super Value in
Harlan. She was the apartment manager at
Westridge Apartments for two years.
Virginia was a member of the First Christian
Church in Harlan. She was a Harlan Cyclone
football fan when her son Todd played and
for several years thereafter. Some of her
favorite activities included knitting,
crocheting, fishing and collecting teddy
bears. Virginia loved talking with people
and will be remembered for her roles of
service in the community.
Virginia died on September 14, 2006, at the
Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, where
she had been a resident for the last three
years, having attained the age of
eighty-four years, one month, and twenty-two
days. In addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by her husbands Lewis
Nelson and Lenus Hartmann.
She is survived
by her children: Connie and her husband
Jerald Christensen of Harlan, Iowa; Bruce
Nelson and his wife Sandra of Walnut, Iowa;
Brian Nelson and his fiancé Patricia of
Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Todd Nelson of Des

George A.
Hartvigsen - Age 73
George Allen Hartvigsen son of
Viderick and Mary (Knudsen) Hartvigsen, was born
on August 26, 1932 in rural Kimballton,Iowa.
George attended the Sharon Township Country
School No. 5. He later attended the Audubon High
School and graduated from the Elk Horn High
School in 1951.
On August 28, 1954, George was united in
marriage to Sharon Wohlhutter in Harlan, Iowa.
Four children were
born to this union: Karla,
Timothy, Dan and Kevin. After their marriage,
the couple resided on a farm northeast of
Kimballton, where they farmed for five years and
in 1961, moved to Harlan and remained there
until 1976 when George was transferred to
southeast Iowa with Continental Grain. In 1985
he returned to the Kimballton area and worked at
the Lansman Seed & Feed in Audubon until his
retirement in 1997. George was a member of the
Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton and
enjoyed gardening, playing golf, fishing,
hunting, baking, canning, watching baseball and most of all, he enjoyed being
a grandpa.
George died on Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at the
Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska,
having attained the age of seventy -three years,
seven months and two days. In addition to his
parents, he was preceded in death by his son,
Dan and his brothers, Merle and Vogel and
sister, Altha Poley.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon of
Kimballton, his children: Karla Roecker of
Harlan, Timothy Hartvigsen of Harlan, Kevin
(Tracy) Hartvigsen of rural Audubon,
daughter-in-law, Carol Hartvigsen of Kimballton,
seven grandchildren: Zack (Erin), Josh (Sarah),
Seth, and Emily Roecker, Jacob, Michaela and Amy
Hartvigsen; two great-grandchildren: Lauren and
Benjamin Roecker; sister-in-law, Elna Hartvigsen
of Kimballton, nieces and nephews, other
relatives and a great many friends.

Agnes Cecelia
Hastert
- Age 73
Agnes Cecelia
Hastert, the daughter of Herman Freund and
Christine (Mumm) Freund, was born on
September 9, 1932, at Defiance, Iowa. She
was baptized at St. Peter’s Catholic Church
in Defiance and later confirmed at St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. She
attended grade schools in Defiance and
Earling and after her parents moved to the
Panama, Iowa area, she attended St. Mary’s
High School, graduating with the class of
1950.
On February 27, 1954, she was united in
marriage to Jacob C. Hastert at St. Mary of
The Assumption Catholic Church in Panama,
Iowa. Seven children were born to this
union. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs.
Hastert farmed in the Westphalia, Iowa, area
where they raised their family. At that
time, they were members of the St. Boniface
Catholic Church where she was a member of
the Rosary Society. Agnes was a farm wife
who loved helping on the farm and was known
for having a large garden and raising
chickens. After farming near Westphalia for
nearly forty years, Jacob and Agnes retired
and moved into Harlan in 1993, and became
members of St. Michael’s Catholic Church
where she was active with the guild.
During
her lifetime, Agnes took great pride in
being a loving housewife, mother and
grandmother. The caring she extended to her
family was evident as well in her ability to
care for others. After her children were
raised, she was a care giver for the
elderly. She also enjoyed playing cards,
quilting, baking, attending her
grandchildren’s activities and traveling.
Agnes died at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in
Harlan on Thursday, August 24, 2006, having
attained the age of seventy-three years,
eleven months and fifteen days. In addition
to her parents, she was preceded in death by
her son Paul in 1974 and two brothers Harold
and Ralph Freund.
Survivors include
her husband of fifty-two years, Jacob
Hastert of Harlan, Iowa; her children,
Robert "Toby" Hastert and his wife Tammy of
Harlan, Richard Hastert and his wife Deborah
of Harlan, William Hastert and his wife June

Elliott R. Havick -
Age 87
Elliott Richard Havick, the son
of Lake C. and Bernadine (Haskins) Havick
was born August
25, 1918, on a farm west of Harlan, Iowa.
He attended school at Harlan,
Iowa.
On April 24,
1942, Elliot was inducted into
the United States Army at Fort
Des Moines, Iowa. He served his
country during World War II.
Elliot was awarded an Asiatic
Pacific Service Ribbon and a
Good Conduct Medal. He was
honorably discharged on October
23, 1945, at Camp Polk,
Louisiana.
Following his honorable
discharge, Elliot worked in
hospitals as an Orderly, in
California, at Clarkson Hospital
in Omaha, Nebraska, as well as,
Myrtue Memorial Hospital in
Harlan, Iowa. Elliot retired in
1975 from Clarkson Hospital in
Omaha, Nebraska.
He was a member of the First
United Methodist Church in
Harlan, Iowa. Elliot enjoyed
attending the Stock Car Races.
Elliot died on Saturday, July 1,
2006, at the Little Flower Haven
Nursing and Rehabilitation
Center in Earling, Iowa, having
attained the age of eighty-seven
years, ten months, and six days.
He was preceded in death by his
parents and sisters, Naomi
Ludwig, Lois Schultz, and
Eleanor Browning.

Franklin Havick - 93
Franklin
Maynard Havick was born October 15, 1913, to
Franklin Mareclin Havick and Essie Amelia
(Bryan) Havick in Shelby County, Iowa, at
his parents’ farm home. He was the eighth
child out of a family of ten. He grew up on
his father’s farm and attended school at
Tennant, Iowa. He drove a "school bus", a
team of horses and wagon, when he was in the
eighth grade. On April 12, 1936, Franklin
was united in marriage to Evelyn Junette
Fick of Harlan, Iowa. They moved to a farm
six miles northeast of Oakland and set up
farming with his brother, Elmer, and then
later with his brother Everett. In 1944,
Franklin and Evelyn purchased a farm one
mile south. In 1955, the family moved to
their current farm near Oakland where in
earlier years he milked forty cows.
Four children were born to this union: Merry
Beth, Susan, Frank , Jr., and Paul. Franklin
lived for his family and loved spending time
with his children and grandchildren, and he
also enjoyed visiting with other family and
friends. For the last six years, he has
hosted a Fourth of July celebration on the
farm.
In 1985, Franklin semi-retired but continued
to stay on the family farm where he raised
calves and helped with the harvest. Franklin
also enjoyed his time on the family farm and
even mowed his own lawn last week.
Franklin died on Thursday, July 19, 2007, at
Alegent Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs,
Iowa, having attained the age of
ninety-three years, nine months, and four
days. He is preceded in death by his
parents; his wife, Evelyn; five brothers:
Claude, Elmer, Harold, Glen, and Everett;
and four sisters: Gladys Klitgaard, Helen
Christensen, Esther Davis, and Mabel Davis.
He is survived by his children: Merry Beth
and her husband Gary Nilan of Oakland, Iowa;
Susan and her husband Mike Hogzett of
Harlan, Iowa; Frank, Jr. Havick and his wife
Nita of Oakland, Iowa; Paul Havick and his
wife Diane of Chariton, Iowa; eight
grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, ten
great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law:

the 2:00 PM service. Interment was at Harlan
Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa with Kerri Havick,

Robin Bennett, Missy Whitfield, and Bill
Hughes as honorary casket bearers. Serving
as casket bearers were Matt Hogzett, Harold

Jeannette K.
Havick - Age 90
Jeannette Havick was
born on December 16, 1917, in Jackson Township
to George and Anna (Willesen) Sorensen.
She attended Jackson No. 9 country school, as
three generations of her family, starting with
her mother. She graduated with the Class of 1934
from Harlan High School. During her last two
years of education, she studied teaching and
taught at Jackson No. 9 for a number of years.
In 1941, Jeannette was united in marriage to
Dallas Havick. Two children were born to this
union: Janis and David.
They moved in 1951 to the farm built by
Jeannette’s grandfather, seeing it become a
Century Farm in 1983. Jeannette was an active
member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in
Jacksonville and enjoyed working with her
women’s circle. She loved to write poetry for
her loved ones’ special occasions and for her
own enjoyment.
Jeannette became a resident of Elm Crest
Retirement Home in January and it was there that
she died on March 28, 2008, having attained the
age of ninety years, three months, and twelve
days. She was preceded in death by her parents
her brother; Chris Sorensen and sister Vivian
Keating.
Jeannette is survived by her husband of
sixty-six years, Dallas Havick of rural Harlan;
her daughter Janis and her husband Melvin
Dinesen of Harlan; her son David Havick and his
wife Kim of Altoona, Iowa; five grandchildren;
six great-grandchildren; her sister Arleen
(Roland) Larson of Palm Beach, Florida and her
sister-in-law Inez Sorensen of Harlan; other
family members and many friends.
A funeral service was held on Monday, March 31,

Bernadine Ann Hayes,
daughter of Leo and Louisa (Schmitz) Pauley, was
born on June 2, 1930, in Panama, Iowa. She was
baptized, confirmed, and attended school at St.
Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in
Panama. On June 7, 1950, Bernadine was united in
marriage to Charles Hayes at St. Mary’s in
Panama. Five children were born to this union:
Marcia, Phyllis, Daniel, Janelle, and Patricia.
They made their home in Lincoln Township and
then Portsmouth before moving back to Lincoln
Township to Chuck’s family farm.
Bernadine worked at Myrtue Memorial Hospital
from 1959 to 1987 as a nurse’s assistant, ward
clerk and pharmacy technician before she became
a home health aid where she worked until 2007
when her health began to fail.
Bernadine was a long-time parishioner of St.
Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in
Portsmouth where she was a member of Catholic
Daughters of the Americas Court St. Maria
Goretti No. 2498 of Portsmouth and the
Portsmouth Legion Auxiliary. She was also a
member of the Portsmouth Community Choir and the
St. Mary’s Church Choir.
Bernadine died peacefully at her home on
Tuesday, April 15, 2008, surrounded by her
family having attained the age of seventy-seven
years, ten months, and thirteen days. She is
preceded in death by her parents; her brothers
Jerry and Walter; her sister Thelma; her
grandson Christopher Allen and
great-granddaughter Ashley Shropshire.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-seven
years, Chuck Hayes of Portsmouth, Iowa; their
children: Marcia Nelson of Kimballton, Iowa;
Phyllis Allen and Dan Hayes both of Harlan,
Iowa; Janelle Christensen and her special friend
Nick Journigan of Maryville, Missouri; and
Patricia Hayes of Harlan; nine grandchildren and
fifteen great-grandchildren; her siblings:
Lucille Wendt of Woodbine, Iowa; Alfred Pauley
and his wife Prune of Panama, Iowa; Mary Ella
and her husband Gary Wilke and Janice and her
husband Gerald Waltz all of Portsmouth, Iowa;
and Kenneth Pauley and his wife Eileen of
Panama; nieces, nephews, other family members
and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday,
April 19, 2008 at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima
Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Rev. John
Dorton officiated the 10:00 AM service with
burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth.
Serving as casket bearers were: Paul Waltz,
Dennis Wilke, Bill Wendt, Kerry Pauley, Jerry
Pauley, and Chuck Wendt.
Dale R. Haynes - Age 46
Dale Robert Haynes, son of William Edgar and Henrietta Ann (Lorence) Haynes, was born on October 26, 1958, at Omaha, Nebraska. He was baptized at the Assumption Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Dale attended Gretna schools and was a member of the graduating class of 1977 from Gretna High School in Gretna, Nebraska.
Upon graduation, Dale was employed at Foxley’s Cattle Company in Omaha, Nebraska. He and Cecilia Haynes raised four children: Laura, Jessica, Mark and Jennifer. In the early 1990's Dale and his family moved to Avoca, Iowa, and he was later employed at Bemis Bags in Omaha, Nebraska. In 2000, Dale and his family relocated to Harlan, Iowa.
Dale was a member of the Abundant Life Church. He enjoyed fishing and golfing. Dale liked to bowl and was in many tournaments during his residency in Avoca, Iowa. He also loved to play poker, Texas Hold ‘Em and Double Down. He and his brothers won a game of Double Down; with their winnings they purchased a fishing boat and named it "Double Down." Dale like eagles and had a vast collection. He often would put the needs of other before himself. Dale was a gracious person and would take people into his home. He extended that value to his daughter Laura’s fiancé, Alan. Dale was known as Papa D, Big D, Big Guy and Double Down to many. He was a great man, father, grandpa and father-in-law; he will be missed very dearly.
Friday, June 10, 2005, Dale’s last moments was enjoying time with his brothers, Mark Sr. and Tom at the casinos. He was transported to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he later died on Monday June, 13, 2005, having attained the age of forty-six years, seven months and eighteen days. Due to the giving nature of Dale, his family chose to donate his organs to help enhance the life of others.
Survivors include his children: Laura Haynes and her fiancé, Alan Ratzlaff, Jessica Haynes, Mark Haynes and his wife, Melissa, and Jennifer Haynes all of Harlan, Iowa; six grandchildren: Taylor, Hailey, Logan, and Dominic Haynes, Caleb and Jordan Ratzlaff; his brothers: Bill Haynes and his wife, Kathy of Omaha, Nebraska; Rick Haynes and his wife, Cindy of Kissimee, Florida; Mark Haynes and his girlfriend, Traci of Westphalia, Iowa; Tom Haynes and his wife, Sheri of Omaha, Nebraska; Tracy Haynes and his wife, Deb of Omaha, Nebraska; best friend and care giver, Bill Sullivan and Bob Griffis both of Council Bluffs, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 17, 2005, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Jeff Erlemeier officiating. Interment was in Merrill’s Grove Cemetery in rural Harlan, Iowa, with Rick Haynes, Mark Haynes, Sr., Bill Haynes, Tom Haynes, Mark Haynes, Jr., Tracy Haynes, Raymond Hutzell, and BJ Haynes serving as casket bearers.
Albert C. Heese - 78
Albert Charles "Bert" Heese was born on May 9, 1929, in Earling, Iowa, to Albert and Mary (Walker) Heese. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. After his graduation from high school, he attended Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, graduating from college in 1951.
It was while he was attending Creighton that he met and married Margaret Connelly of Omaha. After his graduation from Creighton, he served in the United States Army. After his discharge from the service, Bert and Margaret made their home back in Earling and raised their ten children there. Their children are: Mike, Tom, Kathleen, Ann, Tim, Maureen, Patrick, John, Peggy, and Jim.
Bert began employment at the lumberyard with his father and purchased the business in 1967 when his father died. In 1963, Bert formed C & H Fertilizer with Bernard Cox. Bert purchased Mr. Cox’s half of the business in 1976 and continued working there until his retirement.
Bert became a resident of the Little Flower Nursing Home in Earling on March 22, 2007, and it was there that he died on Saturday, November 3, 2007, having attained the age of seventy-eight years, five months, and twenty-five days. In addition to his parents, Bert was preceded in death by his sons Tim and Mike.
He is survived by his children: Tom Heese and his wife Carol Kaufman of Denver, Colorado, Kathleen and her husband Denny Larsen of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Ann Heese of Las Vegas, Nevada, Maureen Ryan of Fremont, Nebraska, Patrick Heese and his wife Cyndi of Lindale, Texas, John Heese of Harlan, Iowa, Peggy and her husband Larry Calavan of Las Vegas, and Jim Heese of Earling, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his brother Don Heese and his wife Margaret of Tampa, Florida; his sister Karen and her husband Herman Fortenberry of Nashville, Tennessee; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, November 7, 2007, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Rev. Tom Coenen officiated the 11:00 AM service. Military Rites were held by Earling American Legion Post No. 615 at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling.
Donald G. Heilig - Age 80
Donald George Heilig, the son of Leonard and Madeline
(Robinson) Heilig, was born on February 9,
1927 in Shelby, Iowa. He was baptized in the
Shelby Methodist Church on April 8, 1928 and
later confirmed in the Shelby Lutheran
Church. Donald attended school in Shelby.
Don enlisted in the United States Navy March
of 1945. He was stationed on the Battleship
USS Pennsylvania. After receiving his
Honorable Discharge in July 1946, he
returned to Shelby and began a bulldozing
business. He was known as the best cat
skinner in southwest Iowa. He also continued
to farm with his father and brothers. Donald
enjoyed gardening, fishing and collecting
"treasures" and was also known as being a
"Jack of All Trades."
