Alice M. Fahn - Age 91
Alice Mary Fahn,
daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Kenkel) Schiltz,
was born on March 21, 1918, in Westphalia, Iowa.
She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface
Catholic Church in Westphalia and graduated from
St. Boniface Catholic Schools in Westphalia,
Iowa, with the class of 1936.
On January 23, 1941, Alice was united in
marriage to Leonard Joseph Fahn at St. Boniface
Catholic Church in Westphalia. Eleven children
were born to this union: Duane, Pat, Yvonne,
Edna, Joann, Kenneth, Keith, Mary, Peg, Randy,
and Jane. After their wedding, Alice and Leonard
made their home in the Defiance area where they
farmed until 1954 when they moved to a farm near
Harlan. After Leonard retired from farming in
1975, the couple moved into Harlan.
Alice loved her family and cherished the time
she spent with them, especially with her
grandchildren and great grandchildren. She could
often be found in the kitchen cooking or baking
bread and goodies for the grandchildren. She
enjoyed being outside in her garden and watching
the wildlife in her back yard. She also enjoyed
playing cards and bowling. Alice and Leonard
were able to spend 15 years wintering in Arizona
and Texas.
Alice died on Thursday, April 23, 2009, at her
home, having attained the age of ninety-one
years, one month, and two days. She is preceded
in death by her parents; her husband Leonard;
her great-grandson Luke Kenkel; her sister Edna
and her brother Walter Schiltz.
She is survived by her children: Duane Fahn and
his wife Karen of Harlan, Iowa; Pat and her
husband Damian Kenkel of Panama, Iowa; Yvonne
and her husband David Krueger of Omaha,
Nebraska; Edna and her husband Ron Odendahl of
Manning, Iowa; Joann and her husband Larry Mayes
of Renton, Washington; Kenneth Fahn and his wife
Stacey of Harlan, Iowa; Keith Fahn and his wife
Deb of Carroll, Iowa; Mary and her husband Dan
D’Arcy of Harlan, Iowa; Peg Thrasher and her
special friend John Heithoff; Randy Fahn and his
wife Cindy; Jane and her husband Eric Rogers all
of Council Bluffs, Iowa; twenty-nine
grandchildren; forty-two great-grandchildren;
one great-great-grandchild; her sister Ruth and
her husband Jim Schaben of Dunlap, Iowa; nieces;
nephews; other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday,
April 27, 2009, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church
in Harlan, Iowa. Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrated the
11:00 AM service. Interment was held at the
Harlan Cemetery in Harlan with Kenton Krueger,
Steve Odendahl, Douglas Fahn, John Mayes,
Kristie Schaben, Stacie Mullen, Elizabeth
Morisch, Leah Thrasher, Sadie Fahn, Stephanie
Watrous, and Brandy Mayes acting as honorary
casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were:
Ben Fahn, Paul Odendahl, Jake Fahn, Curtis
Krueger, Rodney Kenkel, Zachary Fahn, Chad
Kenkel, and Brad Smith.

Leo Joseph "Joe" Fahn -
Age 72
Leo Joseph (Joe) Fahn was born on September 5, 1934 to Leo and Hilda (Leuschen)
Fahn in rural Harlan. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s
of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. He received his education
from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama, graduating in 1952, and continued
on to Iowa State University for one year. He then had the opportunity to
farm and continued to do so until 2006.
On June 6, 1955, Joe married Marilyn Mickels at St. Mary’s in Panama. Two
sons were born to this union: Jay and Jamie. He was a loving husband to
Marilyn and a devoted dad to his sons. They were blessed to celebrate their
50th wedding anniversary in 2005.
Joe became a member of the Iowa Pork Producers and remained active until
2005. Locally, he served as a county and district chairman. On the state
level, he served on many committees as well as Treasurer, Vice President,
and finally as President in 1983. He enjoyed promoting Iowa pork and all the
lifelong friends he made.
He served on the Livestock and Meat Board based in Chicago from 1988 to
1995. He was a member of the Iowa Banking Board for twelve years.
He served as President of St. Mary’s Parish Council, held offices in the
Panama Community Club, was a Scout Leader, coached Little League baseball,
was a 4-H leader, and FFA Lifetime Alumni. He was named Farmer of the Year
by the Panama Community Club in 1973 and by the FFA in 1990. In 1975 he was
honored as Shelby County Pork Producer of the Year.
Forty years ago when the Catholic Church allowed lay people to be lectors,
Joe was one of the first to serve at St. Mary’s in Panama. He was an altar
server until 1991 when Joe and Marilyn moved to Harlan. They were members of
St. Michael’s Parish where Joe also served as a lector and usher.
He enjoyed family gatherings, participating in his sons’ farming operations
and in later years traveling with Marilyn during the winter. He was
especially proud of his grandchildren’s various accomplishments.
Joe died on Friday, July 27, 2007, in his sleep at Myrtue Medical Center in
Harlan, having attained the age of seventy-two years. He was preceded in
death by his parents and his brother-in-law Nick Gubbels.
Joe is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Marilyn Fahn of Harlan,
Iowa; his sons: Jay Fahn and his wife Linda of Harlan, Iowa, and Jamie Fahn
and his wife Mary of Portsmouth, Iowa; grandchildren Megan and Ryan Fahn of
Portsmouth, Iowa, Bonnie and her husband Brian Reinig of Omaha, Nebraska,
and Amy Jo Jacobsen of Indianola, Iowa; his sisters: Marge Gubbels of
Harlan, Iowa, Donna and her husband Kenny Escher of Harlan, Iowa, Judy and
her husband Chuck Reynolds of Omaha, Nebraska, Mary Rose and her husband
Hollis Bledsoe of Avoca, Iowa; his brothers: Charlie Fahn and his wife Linda
of Canton, Georgia, and Bill Fahn and his wife Joan of Panama, Iowa; nieces,
nephews, other family members, and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, July 30, 2007, with celebrant
Rev. Bob Hoefler and Concelebrant Rev. Leonard Kenkel conducting the 10:30
AM service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket
bearers were Ken Mickels, Leo Kloewer, Chuck Bjustrom, Mike Telford, Rich
Dagner, Melvin Morfeld, Jim Ledgers, and Jim Meyer. Serving as casket
bearers were Ryan Fahn, Brian Reinig, Dean Gubbels, Bill Fahn, Charlie Fahn,
and Chris Rodenborn. Interment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Panama,
Iowa.

Marilyn A. Fahn - Age 76
Marilyn Ann
Fahn was born on March 18, 1935, to John and Anna (Reisz)
Mickels in Panama, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at
St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama. She grew up on a farm
west of Panama and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in
Panama, graduating at the top of her class in 1953. She
continued her education at Mt. St. Scholastica College in
Atchison, Kansas. After one year, she returned home to
Panama.
On June 6, 1955, Marilyn was united in marriage to Leo
Joseph Fahn at St. Mary’s in Panama. They had two sons: Jay
and Jamie. In 1958 the family moved to the farm near
Portsmouth, Iowa. Joe and Marilyn moved to Harlan in 1990.
Marilyn was involved with her sons’ activities in 4-H
and FFA and served as a Den Mother when the boys were in
Scouts. When her husband was Iowa Pork Producer President,
she loved actively promoting pork and was involved with the
Porkettes at the state and local levels. In 1975 she won the
County Porkette Bell Ringer Award and in 1988 won the State
award. She served on the State Pork Queen Committee and was
a charter member of the Shelby County Porkettes, working
many food stands at the Shelby County Fair.
She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church
and served in the Rosary Society. She was also an active
member of her community and served as president of the
Community Club, chaired the 1984 Centennial Cookbook
committee, belonged to the Community Chorus, and was a
member of the Myrtue Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary. She
received the Farm Bureau Distinguished Service to
Agriculture Award in 2008 for her dedication to agriculture
and pork.
Marilyn enjoyed working in her flower gardens,
attending book review club, and playing bridge, but her
grandchildren’s events brought her the most joy.
Marilyn died unexpectedly at her home on Thursday,
December 29, 2011, having attained the age of seventy-six
years, nine months, and eleven days. She was preceded in
death by her parents John and Anna, her husband Joe, and
sister Eileen Mickels.
She is survived by her sons: Jay Fahn and his wife
Linda of Harlan, Iowa and Jamie Fahn and his wife Mary of
Portsmouth, Iowa; grandchildren: Megan and her husband
Travis Kroneman of Osage, Iowa and Ryan Fahn of Portsmouth,
Iowa; step-grandchildren Bonnie and her husband Brian Reinig
of Omaha, Nebraska and Amy Jo Jacobsen of Bethesda,
Maryland; step-great-grandchildren Lexi and Noah Reinig of
Omaha; brothers and sisters: Ron Mickels and his wife Carol
of Omaha, Roger Mickels of Lakewood, Colorado, Norma and her
husband Dan Schafer of Aurora, Colorado, Ken and his wife
Jan Mickels of Omaha, Denise and her husband Andy Gross of
West Des Moines, Iowa, and Nick Mickels of Dunlap, Iowa;
additional family members and friends.
Rev. John Frost celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of
Christian Burial with Concelebrant Rev. Paul Koch on
Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in
Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Travis Kroneman,
Ron Mickels, Nick Mickels, Ryan Fahn, Roger Mickels, and Ken
Mickels. Interment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in
Panama, Iowa. 
Raymond J. Feldman
- Age 93
Raymond John Feldman was born on
September 1, 1917 to Henry and Adeline (Graeve)
Feldman in Portsmouth, Iowa. He was baptized and
confirmed at St. Mary’s Our Lady of Fatima
Catholic Church in Portsmouth. He attended a
rural elementary school and St. Mary’s grade
school in Portsmouth.
Raymond started his farming career helping his father
with the farming on the family farm in the
Portsmouth, Iowa, area and then on the farm in
the Panama, Iowa, area.
On September 14, 1944, Raymond was united in marriage
to Margaret Honz at St. Mary’s of the Assumption
Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. They were the
parents of four children: Joan, Allan, William,
and Paul.
After their marriage, they farmed in the Portsmouth,
Iowa area and were members of St. Mary Our Lady
of Fatima Catholic Church for five years. They
then moved to a farm near Panama, Iowa, and were
members of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic
Church. They continued living there until 1976
when they retired from farming and moved to
Harlan, Iowa. Raymond was also a painter and
continued to do interior and exterior painting.
Raymond was a devoted and loving husband, father,
grandfather, and great-grandfather. His faith,
family, and friends were important to him. He
was privileged to celebrate sixty-six years of
marriage.
He also enjoyed fishing, especially during the summer
months when the grandchildren came to visit to
teach them how to fish. He always enjoyed
painting, reading, and playing cards.
Ray and Margaret traveled to Holland to visit their
daughter Joan and family. While there, they
traveled to Germany to visit Ray’s German
cousins. He saw the homes where his mother and
father had lived near Cologne, before coming to
the United States.
Raymond died on Monday, September 27, 2010, having
attained the age of ninety-three years and
twenty-six days. In addition to his parents, he
was preceded in death by his sons Allan in 1988
and Paul in 1959; his sisters: Marie, Helen,
Leona, Elvera, and Irene; and his brothers Al,
Joe, Frank, and Bernard.
He is survived by his wife Margaret Feldman of Harlan,
Iowa; his children Joan and her husband Robert
Gaul of Harlan, William Feldman and his wife
Connie of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter-in-law
Kathy Feldman (widow of Allan) of Omaha,
Nebraska; six grandchildren: Steven Gaul and his
wife Marie of Hilliard, Florida, Julie and her
husband Dr. Kevin Allemagne of Fitchburg,
Wisconsin, Mark Feldman and his wife Annie of
Omaha, Jill and her husband Jason Groves of
Elkhorn, Nebraska, Andy Feldman of Kansas City,
MO, and Katie and her husband Brad Werth of
Gladstone, Missouri; nine great-grandchildren:
Aeleyni Gaul, Cecilia, Jonathan, and Madeline
Allemagne, Allan and Anthony Feldman, and
Nathan, Benjamin, and Nolan Groves; sisters:
Rose Daley and Viola Durdon, both of Omaha;
sisters-in-law: Isabel Feldman of Panama, Iowa,
Sylvia Feldman, and Rose Feldman of Omaha,
Sister Norma Honz, O.S.B. of Atchison, Kansas;
brother-in-law: Andrew Honz and his wife Lucille
of Grand Island, Nebraska; other family members
and friends.

2010 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan,
Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Mark
Feldman, Joe Feldman, Jr., Randy Feldman, John
Feldman, Steve Gaul, and Andy Feldman. Interment
was held at the Dunlap Cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa.

Donna L.
Felker - Age 85
Donna Lee Felker,
daughter of Floyd C. And Maude Stanley
Williamson, was born on January 28, 1923 in
Nemeha County, Kansas and was one of five
children. She graduated from Mayetta Kansas High
School in 1940 and began working as a domestic
and as a store clerk in Holton, Kansas.
On January 3, 1942, Donna was united in marriage
to Oliver Charles Felker in Emporia, Kansas. To
this union four children were born: Virginia,
Patricia, David, and Joyce. After their wedding,
Donna and Oliver lived in Plattsmouth, Nebraska.
After moving to several other Nebraska
communities, they moved to Avoca, Iowa in 1958,
which was home for forty-four years, and
continued to farm and raise cattle. They moved
to the Clarinda, Iowa area in 2002 when Oliver’s
health made it necessary for them to leave the
farm.
Donna was always interested in homemaking, and
enjoyed reading, sewing, and crafts. She was a
lifetime member of the United Methodist Church
and was active in the United Methodist Women’s
Group, Eastern Star, Women’s Federated Club,
Craft Club, the Neighborhood Card Club, and was
a past 4-H leader. She had many interests
including flowers, gardening, and collecting
Porcelain Dolls, cups and saucers, birds and
bird plates. Later in life, Donna enjoyed Bible
study groups and listening to music. She loved
her Maker, Church, friends and was happiest when
the family was together on any occasion. Those
who knew and loved her will miss her.
Donna died on Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at
Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda, Iowa, having
attained the age of eighty-five years, six
months, and twenty-two days. She is preceded in
death by her parents; her husband , Oliver, of
sixty-one years; her son David Lee; her grandson
Daniel Chadwell; her great-granddaughter Alexie
Webb; her brothers: Stanley, Floyd, and Kenneth
Williamson; her sister Aileen McBride; and her
son-in-law James E. Shiffer.
She is survived by her three daughters Virginia
and her husband Harold Chadwell of Columbus,
Nebraska; Patricia and her husband Donald
Schnitker of Clarinda, Iowa; and Joyce Shiffer
and her husband Gary Van Horn of Oakland, Iowa;
four grandchildren: Ann Schnitker Webb, Donnie
Schnitker, Katie Chadwell, and James Derek
Shiffer; three great grandchildren; nieces,
nephews other family members and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Thursday, August
21, 2008, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca,
Iowa with Kris Davies officiating the 10:00 AM
service. Burial was held at Sabetha City
Cemetery in Sabetha, Kansas at 2:30 PM on
Thursday. Serving as honorary casket bearers
were: Curt Webb, Gary Van Horn, James Shiffer,
Donnie Schnitker, Harold Chadwell, and Donald
Schnitker. 
Tommy Newell Fell - Age -
89
Tommy Newell Fell, son of Thomas and Bernice
(Sewell) Fell, was born on March 21, 1921 at
Emmetsburg, Iowa. He attended grade school in
Emmetsburg and after his family moved to Walnut,
Iowa, Tommy completed his education at Walnut
High School and graduated with the class of
1941.
After high school, Tommy enlisted into the United
States Marines in Texas and then was transferred
to the Merchant Marines in California where he
served his country during World War II. On
October 17, 1944, while on leave in Kansas City,
Missouri, Tommy was united in marriage to Velma
McDermott of Walnut, Iowa. To this union, four
children were born: Jane, Jeff, Bill and Brett.
After their marriage, Tommy continued his
service for the Merchant Marines where after his
discharge, he returned to Walnut and worked for
the Northern Natural Gas Company. He went on to
start a trucking and corn shelling business
helping local farmers transporting livestock. He
later expanded his trucking service to making
longer trips to the east coast. He worked in
Walnut for a Chevy car dealer as mechanic and
when he discontinued trucking for a few years,
he began driving school bus. At that time he
also drove his portable grinder, used for
grinding livestock feed for farmers. Tommy then
drove three different cream and egg routes where
he made trips throughout Shelby, Audubon and
eastern Pottawattamie counties.
Tommy returned to trucking this time hauling
hanging/swinging hogs to California and
returning to the Midwest with fresh produce. He
drove for Ernie Hogeland for a few years then
purchased Ernie’s freight company and operated
it out of Walnut until his retirement in 1983.
In the early 80's, Tommy and Velma began
spending winters in Texas where they met
numerous couples and remained longtime close
friends. Tommy and Velma loved dancing and won
several awards while dancing the waltz.
In 2003, Tommy became a resident of the Salem Lutheran
Home in Elk Horn until July of 2004 where he
then moved to the Little Flower Haven Nursing
Home in Earling, Iowa. It was here that he died
on October 16, 2010 having attained the age of
eighty-nine years, six months and twenty-five
days. In addition to his parents, he was
preceded and in death by his granddaughter,
Shari Fell, his brothers and sister: Clarence,
Avery, George, Wilbur, Phil, Harold and Bevery
Kiesel and his son-in-law Dale Dyson.
He is survived by his wife, Velma Fell of Walnut; his
children: Jane Dyson of Carson; Jeff Fell and
his wife Peggy of Walnut, Iowa; Bill Fell and
his wife Laurie of Avoca, Iowa and Brett Fell of
Simla, Colorado; ten grandchildren; seven great
grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other
relatives and many friends.
Pastor David Krueger officiated the 2:00 P.M. Funeral
Service at First Presbyterian Church in Walnut
on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. Masonic Services
and Military Rites by the Walnut American Legion
Post No. 422 were held in Layton Township
Cemetery in Walnut. Serving as casket bearers
were: Jim Dyson, Jessica Oswalt, Drew Fell, Nate
Fell, Angela Beebe, and Gabe Fell.

Bernice C. Feser -
Age 78
Bernice Schulte Feser was born on April 23, 1928, to William and Anna
Schulte of Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa, where she also completed her education.
After completing high school, she became a nanny and took care of the
children of Dr. Stoner in Omaha, Nebraska. Later she worked at a sweet corn
factory in Harlan, Iowa.
On October 3, 1950, Bernice was united in marriage to Leo Feser at St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. For a short time they made their home
in Harlan, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: two sons, Leslie
and Dale, and one daughter, Karen. Bernice ran the household and raised the
children while Leo was out on the road trucking. When they moved to the farm
in 1963, she stayed busy helping Leo with the hogs and other activities of
farm life.
She enjoyed vacationing with her family and spent three weeks out west
touring the states. She made the best fried baked chicken anywhere. Some of
her favorite activities were playing bingo and cards with her friends and
watching the Christmas programs her grandchildren performed for her when
they were younger. In 1987, Bernice and Leo began spending their winters in
Texas, enjoying the warmer temperatures.
Bernice was diagnosed with leukemia on February 14, 2007, admitted to
Alegent Health Mercy Hospital on February 19, 2007, and it was there that
she died on Thursday, March 22, 2007, having attained the age of
seventy-eight years, ten months, and twenty-seven days.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leo, her son
Leslie, her brothers Lawrence, John, Raymond, and Howard and her sisters
Frances Irwin, Ellen Stoll, and Helen Carey.
Bernice is survived by her children: Dale Feser of Defiance, Iowa, and Karen
and her husband Dennis Boger of Dallas Center, Iowa; her grandchildren: Teri
and her husband Tyler Reihmann, Daniel Boger, Holly Feser, Kelsey Feser, and
Zachary Feser; her brother and sisters: Alice Carey of Harlan, Iowa, Theresa
Blum of Walnut, Iowa, Agnes and her husband Leo Gaul of Harlan, Paul and his
wife Agnes Schulte of Carroll, Iowa, and Josephine Kwapiszeski of Harlan,
nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, March 26, 2007, with Rev. Bob
Hoefler officiating the 11:00 AM service at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in
Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Teri Reihmann, Daniel Boger,
Holly Feser, Kelsey Feser, Zachary Feser, Tyler Reihmann,
and Brian Stessman. Interment was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in
Defiance, Iowa.

John D.
Finerty - Age 81
John Daniel Finerty,
son of James and Eva May (Jungferman) Finerty,
was born on October 25, 1928, in Council Bluffs,
Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church in Neola, Iowa, and
attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School through
the fourth grade. John graduated from Beebeetown
High School with the class of 1946.
One February 7, 1955, John enlisted in the
United States Army and was honorably discharged
on February 6, 1957, having attained the rank of
Lt. Corporal.
On April 16, 1955, John was united in marriage
to JoAnn Mary Ingwersen at the base chapel at
Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. Four daughters were born
to this union: Patricia, Kathleen, Karen, and
Connie. After their wedding, John and JoAnn made
their home outside of Persia where John farmed.
When he wasn’t busy working, John enjoyed
spending time with his children and
grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching baseball
and football on the television.
John was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church until 1981, when he became a member at
St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in
Portsmouth, Iowa.
John retired from farming in 1997, but continued
to live outside of Persia.
John died on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at
Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having
attained the age of eighty-one years, one month,
and thirteen days. He is preceded in death by
his parents; his daughters Patricia and Connie;
and his sister Mary Larsen.
He is survived by his wife JoAnn of Persia,
Iowa; their daughters Kathleen and her husband
Ron Gau of Persia and Karen and her husband Paul
Waltz of Johnston, Iowa; ten grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren; his son-in-law George
Harman of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and his sister
Betty Petratis of Council Bluffs; nieces;
nephews; other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday,
December 12, 2009, at St. Mary Our Lady of
Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa, with
Rev. John Dorton celebrating the 10:00 AM
service. Military Rites were held at St.
Patrick’s Cemetery in Neola, Iowa, by the Persia
American Legion Post No. 314 and Portsmouth
American Legion Post No. 547. Acting as honorary
casket bearers were Ron Gau, George Harman, and
Paul Waltz. Serving as casket bearers were:

John "Jack" Finken - Age 85
John Joseph Finken, better known as Jack,
was born on March 30, 1926 to John and Mathilda (Heese)
Finken in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at
St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling and graduated from
St. Joseph’s Catholic School.
The day after his high school graduation, Jack left for
the Marines. He served in Okinawa and the occupational
forces in Japan during World War II. In July of 1946, he
received his honorable discharge from military service and
returned home. He worked for two years for his dad at the
grocery store before purchasing it from his dad.
In 1953, Jack joined the Trappist Monks for five years.
He returned to Earling and worked for the lumber yard before
going to work at the Iowa Beef Producers packing plant. He
enjoyed farming and also raised hogs before retiring in the
early 90's. Jack was a very kind and humble person who
valued the simple things in life and was faithful to read
the Bible.
Jack died at his home on Monday, December 5, 2011,
having attained the age of eighty-five years, eight months,
and five days. He was preceded in death by his parents,
sister Mariella Kramer, and two brothers: Cyril and Charles
Finken.
He is survived by his brother Robert Finken and his
wife Mary of Earling, Iowa; many family members and friends.
Rev. Chris Fontanini celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of
Christian Burial on Friday, December 9, 2011 at St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Betty Gaul accompanied
vocalists Dave and Ruth Hoffmann. Serving as casket bearers
were Larry Kramer, Richard Finken, Bob Kirschbaum, Charles
King, Steve Finken, and Dale Graeve. Interment was held at
St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling, Iowa. 
Michael G. Finken - Age 54
Michael "Mike" Finken lived an incredible
life. He was born to Bob and Mary Finken on August 9, 1956
in Manning, Iowa. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School
in Earling, Iowa, and graduated from Harlan High School with
the Class of 1974.
After high school, he attended Iowa Western Community
College and received his Electronics Technology Degree. From
there he worked many places: Control Data in Omaha,
Nebraska, Burroughs Corporation in Omaha and then
transferred to Minneapolis where he met his future wife,
Brenda Halvorsen. They both continued to work at
Burroughs/Unisys and were married on May 4, 1991 at St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Michael continued to
work at Unisys for twenty-five years before he went to
Allianz Life and then Thomson-Reuters as a Storage
Engineer-Team Lead. Through his career, the one thing his
co-workers could say about him was that he was very
passionate about his job.
Michael and Brenda were blessed with four boys: Isaac,
John, Nicholas, and Tanner. Michael enjoyed taking the
family on several vacations and the annual trip to Okoboji
to be with the cousins. He attended a lot of the sporting
events the kids participated in and he was always good for
candy, he usually had some in his pocket to share. Michael
also enjoyed shooting off rockets, collecting Coca-Cola
memorabilia, and spent a lot of hours in the garage doing
his woodwork. Michael was an active member of the community
and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1741.
Mike died on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 having attained
the age of fifty-four years, ten months, and thirteen days.
He is survived by his wife Brenda Finken of Apple Valley,
Minnesota; four sons: Isaac, John, Nicholas, and Tanner; his
parents Bob and Mary Finken of Earling, Iowa; sisters:
Sharon and her husband Bob Kirschbaum of Sheldon, Iowa,
Vicki and her husband Duane Gall of LaVista, Nebraska, and
Ann and her husband Charles King of Millard, Nebraska; many
nieces and nephews; other beloved relatives and many
friends.
Rev. Chris Fontanini celebrated the 10:30 AM Mass of
Christian Burial on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers
were Isaac Finken, Jonathan King, Duane Gall, Bob Kirschbaum,
Stephen Kirschbaum, Aaron Gall, Chuck King, and John Finken.
Interment was held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling.

Carolyn L. Fiscus -
Age 64
Carolyn Lee Fiscus was born on September 7, 1946
to George and Jeanette (Schmitz) Rasmussen in Harlan, Iowa.
She attended grade school in the Harlan Elementary Schools
and graduated from Harlan Community High School with the
Class of 1964.
On July 3, 1965, Carol was united in marriage to Terry
Fiscus at the United Methodist Church in Irwin, Iowa. Three
children were born to this union: Lyn, Dustin, and Jeremy
George. After marriage she worked as a secretary for the
Harlan High School. After the arrival of her children, she
continued part time at the school and later became a stay at
home mom. As the kids grew she started working at Buckley
and Sojka law offices. She enjoyed law work and even went to
school to work toward a paralegal degree. In 1992, she
started work at Salvo, Deren, Schenck, and Lauterbach law
office where she was presently employed.
Carol thoroughly enjoyed doing activities with her
grandchildren, attending school functions, having pool
parties at their home with the family and friends and loved
going on family vacations. Carol enjoyed working on her
computer. She was very active in her church, the United
Methodist Women’s group and was currently serving as church
treasurer.
Carol died on Thursday, March 17, 2011, at her home in
Kirkman, having attained the age of sixty-four years, six
months, and ten days. She was preceded in death by her
parents.
She is survived by her husband of forty-five years
Terry Fiscus of Kirkman, Iowa; her daughter Lyn and her
husband Troy Ahrenholtz of Defiance, Iowa; sons Dustin
Fiscus and his wife Angie of Blue Springs, Missouri and
Jeremy George Fiscus and his wife Amy of Omaha, Nebraska;
seven grandchildren: Emma, Anna, and Isaiah Ahrenholtz,
Dalton and Eli Fiscus and Mya and Maira Fiscus; sisters:
Kathy and her husband Clint Kienast, Lois and her husband
Ron Heese, and Nancy and her husband Phillip Nielsen all of
Kirkman; brothers Andy Rasmussen and his wife Kathy of Irwin
and Randy Rasmussen and his wife Lois of Omaha, Nebraska;
mother-in-law Violet Fiscus of Harlan; brother-in-law Kelly
Fiscus of Kirkman; sister-in-law Joleen Fiscus of Harlan;
other family members and many friends.
Pastor Leila Blackburn officiated the 10:30 AM Funeral
Service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa on
Monday, March 21, 2011. Interment was held in the Rose Hill
Cemetery in Kirkman, Iowa with Clinton Kienast, Mark
Peterson, Gary Holloway, Karl Hanson, Ron Heese, and Phil
Nielsen serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers
were Pete Petersen, Ron Ronfeldt, Kelly Fiscus, and Pat
Deren.

Lyle D. Fiscus
- Age 56
Lyle Dean
Fiscus was born on April 17, 1953, in Harlan,
Iowa, to Melvin and Katheryn (Olson) Fiscus. He
was baptized at the First United Methodist
Church in Harlan. He graduated from the Irwin
Schools and continued his education at
Morningside College in Sioux City before
transferring to the University of Iowa.
In 1974, Lyle was married to Diane Parr and had
two children: Gabe and Jody.
He was united in marriage to Brenda Andersen on
March 20, 1982, at the First United Methodist
Church in Harlan. Two daughters were born to
this union: Sara and Amy.
Lyle worked in the construction industry for
Delta Asphalt before he began farming. He and
his brother Dale ran the Beer Barn in Kirkman
for a few years. He joined the Research
Department at Wilson Seeds before going into
business with Jerry Strissel at IndeSearch. Most
recently, he had been working at Remington
Hybrid Seed Company in Harlan.
Lyle’s passions in life were his family,
farming, faith, and sports. For several years,
he has been an active participant of the Last
Supper reinactment during the Lenten season.
Lyle always had a special spot in his playful
heart for his three granddaughters: Jordyn,
Jadyn, and Indy Belle.
Lyle died suddenly on Wednesday, August 12,
2009, having attained the age of fifty-six
years, three months, and twenty-six days. He was
preceded in death by his father and his brother
Roger.
Lyle is survived by his wife of twenty-seven
years, Brenda Fiscus, of Harlan, Iowa; his
children: Gabe Fiscus and his wife Megan of
Perry, Iowa, Jody and her husband Darren Johnson
of Clarion, Iowa, Sara Fiscus of Omaha,
Nebraska, and Amy Fiscus of Las Vegas, Nevada;
three granddaughters: Jordyn, Jadyn, and Indy
Belle; his mother Katheryn Fiscus of Harlan,
brothers and sisters: Wade Fiscus and his wife
Darlene of Longmont, Colorado, Janet and her
husband Denny Fry of Warroad, Minnesota, Melva
Fiscus of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Dale Fiscus
and his wife Cynthia of LaPorte, Colorado;
nieces and nephews, other family members, and
many friends.
Pastor Dave Swinton officiated the 1:00 PM
funeral service on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at
the United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa.
Honorary casket bearers were Kelly Fiscus, Tom
Olson, Chad Fiscus, Tim Olson, and Joel Fiscus.
Serving as casket bearers were Jerry Strissel,
Tom Schmitz, Larry Knudsen, Keith Fiscus, Terry
Fiscus, Randy Fiscus, Al Plumb, and Brian Kock.
Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in
Harlan, Iowa. 
Ivan G.
Fiscus - Age 94
Ivan Glenn Fiscus was born on November 10, 1912, to
Paaren and Anna Jane (Mitten) Fiscus in rural Shelby County, Iowa. He
attended country school near his birthplace of Redline, Iowa. After his
schooling, he began his farming career with his dad and brothers.
On October 10,
1940, he was united in marriage to Charline Ione Miller. One child was born
to this union, Keith. Ivan lived and farmed in the Shelby County area his
entire married life.
Ivan enjoyed
the simple things in life and loved to sit and visit for hours. He would
hand out ice cream bars to anyone who stopped by the farm. He was a huge
helpmate to Charline and was a wonderful husband for sixty-two years and was
such a fantastic father to his son, that he often did Keith’s worrying for
him!
In 1977, Ivan
retired from farming but kept his connection with the land and livestock by
assisting Keith with the farm. Ivan especially loved driving the tractor and
helping with the field work. Ivan was a member of the First Baptist Church
in Harlan. He continued to live on the farm until March of 2007, when he
moved to Salem Lutheran Nursing Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. It was there that he
died on Monday, October 1, 2007, having attained the age of ninety-four
years, ten months, and twenty-one days. Keith will always remember his
birthday as the day his Dad went home to be with the Lord. He was preceded
in death by his parents, his wife Charline, his grandson Ron, and his
brothers and sisters: Elvie, Elmer, Iliff, Leonard, Florence, LaVerne,
Melvin, and Melveree.
Ivan is
survived by his son Keith Fiscus and his wife Bonnie of Kirkman, Iowa; and
his brother Wayne Fiscus and his wife Violet also of Kirkman, Iowa;
sisters-in-law: Madge Fiscus and Katherine Fiscus both of Harlan; nieces and
nephews; other family members and friends.
A funeral
service was held on Friday, October 5, 2007, at First Baptist Church in
Harlan with Pastor Gundar Lamberts officiating the 10:30 AM service.
Honorary casket bearers were Lowell Howe, Gene Gaer, Loren Ostebee, Dave
Martin, Bryan Greve, Les Outhouse, and Mike Weisenborn. Serving as casket
bearers were Jim Baughman, Kelly Fiscus, Norm Mathiasen, Terry Fiscus, Lyle
Fiscus, and Randy Fiscus with interment held at the Harlan Cemetery in
Harlan, Iowa.

Wayne E.
Fiscus - Age 87
Wayne Edward Fiscus
was born on January 15, 1921, to Paaren and Anna
(Mitten) Fiscus in rural Shelby County. He
attended Country School through the seventh
grade and then begin working for neighboring
farms at the age of fourteen.
He worked in the canning factory in Harlan at
night for a number of years. He also followed
the thrashing crews through the Dakotas and
Minnesota. He actively started farming for
himself in the Spring of 1942.
He was married to Violet Swensen on December 21,
1943, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Two sons were
born to this union: Terry and Kelly. They farmed
east of Kirkman until 1955, then farmed
southeast of Harlan for two years before moving
back to the Kirkman area in 1957.
In 1992, Wayne retired from farming and enjoyed
the easy living of country life. He would go to
the stock car races in Harlan and kept up the
homeplace until May of 2008, when he and Violet
moved into Harlan. He enjoyed spending time with
his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and
had just celebrated sixty-five years of marriage
to his lovely bride.
Wayne became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement
Home on January 2, 2009, and it was there that
he died on Monday, January 5, 2009, having
attained the age of eighty-seven years, eleven
months, and twenty-one days. He was preceded in
death by his parents, his brothers: Elmer, Iliff,
Ivan, Melvin, Melvere, and Leonard and his
sisters: Elvie Kolb, LaVern Nielsen, and
Florence White.
He is survived by his wife Violet Fiscus of
Harlan, Iowa; his sons Terry Fiscus and his wife
Carol of Kirkman, Iowa and Kelly Fiscus and his
wife Joleen also of Kirkman; five grandchildren:
Lyn and her husband Troy Ahrenholtz, Dustin
Fiscus and his wife Angie, Jeremy Fiscus and his
wife Amy, Shilo and her husband Jeff Bladt, and
Seth Fiscus; six great-grandchildren; nieces and
nephews; other family members; and friends.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January
7, 2009, with Pastor Keith Pals officiating the
2:00 PM service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in
Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Lyn
Ahrenholtz, Shilo Bladt, Angie Fiscus, Amy
Fiscus, Eugene Gaer, Ellsworth Shannon, Dale
Baughman, Cal Peterson, and Ron Ronfeldt.
Serving as casket bearers were Dustin Fiscus,
Jeremy Fiscus, Seth Fiscus, Troy Ahrenholtz,
Jeff Bladt, Keith Fiscus, Lyle Fiscus, and Randy
Fiscus. Interment was held in the Rose Hill
Cemetery in Kirkman, Iowa. 
Joseph E. Flies - Age 88
Joseph Englebert Flies, son of John
and Frances (Berger) Flies, was born on January
7, 1922 in Dedham, Iowa. He was baptized at St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dedham, Iowa and
later received his first communion at St.
Patrick’s Church in Audubon, Iowa. Joseph
attended country school in rural Audubon county.
After his schooling, Joseph worked with his father and
brothers on the family farm. On November 9,
1942, Joe was inducted into the United States
Army at Camp Dodge in Iowa. He was honorably
discharged on February 13, 1943 from Camp
Roberts in California. After his discharge, Joe
returned to Iowa and farmed near Audubon and
Fiscus.
Joe met the love of his life, Theda Rosman, at a dance
in Defiance, Iowa and on January 8, 1952, they
were united in marriage at St. Michael’s
Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. After their
marriage, Joe and Theda lived at various farms
in the Defiance and Harlan areas until 1989 when
they retired and made their home in Harlan. Even
after his retirement, Joe continued to stay busy
helping family, friends and neighbors; whether
it be hauling corn, mowing yards, raking leaves
or helping out at the church. He also loved
spending time with his family and playing cards
with his family and friends.
Joseph died on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Elm Crest
Retirement Home in Harlan, Iowa having attained
the age of eighty-eight years, six months and
thirteen days. In addition to his parents, he
was preceded in death by his brothers and
sisters: Peter who died in infancy, John, Peter,
Matt, George, Frances, Michael and Theresa.
He is survived by his wife, Theda of Harlan; his
children: Raymund and his wife Ellen of
Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mary Jo and her husband
David Law of Lawton, Iowa, Mike and his wife
Cathy of Defiance, Iowa and John and his wife
Denise of Blair, Nebraska; thirteen
grandchildren, four great- granddaughters, his
sister Marie Brannan of Audubon, Iowa; nieces
and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 A.M. on
Saturday, July 24, 2010 at St Michael’s Catholic
Church in Harlan, Iowa with Father Chris
Fontanini officiating. Interment was at the
Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa with Alan Flies,
Nick Flies, Paul Flies, Greg Flies, Jeff Flies,
Zach Flies and Jeremy Flies serving as casket
bearers. 
Robert "Dave" Force -
Age 61
Robert "Dave" Force was born on March 17, 1946 to Dale and Jean (Fritts) Force in Portland, Oregon. He was confirmed at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church. He attended elementary school in Portland and graduated at Rainier High School in Rainier, Oregon, with the Class of 1964. He continued his education at Lower Columbia Community College in Longview, Washington.
Dave
left college to enlist in the United States Air Force in 1965. He received
his specialty training and worked as a weather forecaster, beginning with
Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois and ending with Elmendorf Air Force Base
in Alaska. He also served in a financial capacity at the Army Chapel in Fort
Wainwright, Alaska. During the summer of 1967, Dave met LaVonne Walker on
McChord Air Force Base in Washington State. It was at the base that Dave was
united in marriage to LaVonne two years later on June 5, 1969. One son,
Steven, was born to this union. He was also stationed at Thulle Air Force
Base in Greenland for one year of duty.
Dave
spent twenty-six years in the Air Force, obtaining the rank of Senior Master
Sergeant, and receiving his honorable discharge on November 1, 1991. After
becoming a civilian, he went back to college and obtained his degree in
computerized bookkeeping at Charter College in Anchorage, Alaska. After
completing his degree, Dave worked as a full charge bookkeeper for two
construction companies until his retirement in July 2006. Between the summer
of 1997 and September of 2006, when Dave and LaVonne moved to Harlan, he was
very active at Dimond Grace Fellowship in Anchorage. He had a servant’s
heart and was an Elder, bookkeeper, teacher, and leader, touching many lives
as he lived for our Lord.
Dave and
LaVonne enjoyed spending time with family and often vacationed together with
her sisters and their husbands. Dave was very proud of the accomplishments
of his son Steven and wife Melanie. He was the best grandpa to Malcolm,
Cameron, and Isabella, playing with them and spoiling them as much as he
could.
Dave became sick in June of 2007
and was admitted to Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. It was
there that he died on August 14, 2007, having attained the age of sixty-one
years, four months, and twenty-eight days. He was preceded in death by his
parents, his brother Sumner Earlywine, and his step-mother Patience Force.
He is
survived by his wife of thirty-eight years, LaVonne of Harlan, Iowa; his son
Steven Force and wife Melanie of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; three grandchildren:
Malcolm, Cameron, and Isabella; his brothers: Don Earlywine and wife Annie
of Prineville, Oregon, Dan Force and wife Diane of Vancouver, Washington,
and Tim Force of Rainier, Oregon; nieces, nephews, other family members, and
many friends.
A
funeral service was held on Tuesday, August 21, 2007, with Rev. Chris Ball
and Rev. Gundar Lamberts officiating the 1:30 PM service at First Baptist
Church in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Mike Dorland, Jeremy
Walker, David Martin, Jim Powell, Mike Brandt, and Joe Powell. Military
Rites were held by the Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 and
Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan.

Carol Foxhoven - Age 62
Carol Ann Foxhoven, daughter of Henry
Michael and Frances Marie (Kaufman) Foxhoven,
was born on August 13, 1947, in Earling, Iowa.
She grew up on the family farm near Earling.
Carol was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Earling and graduated from
St. Joseph’s Catholic High School with the class
of 1965.
Carol worked various
jobs in Omaha and Norfolk, Nebraska. In 1981,
Carol returned to Earling and was a care giver
for her father in his later years. In December
1991, Carol moved to Harlan and this continued
to be her home. While in Harlan, Carol became a
member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
Carol enjoyed doing
painting projects for Country Treasures in
Harlan for a number of years. She was a very
artistic person.
Carol died on Friday,
April 16, 2010, at the University of Nebraska
Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, having
attained the age of sixty-two years, eight
months, and three days. She is preceded in death
by her parents and her brothers Richard and
Celestin.
She is survived by her
siblings: Betty Ann Noonan of Columbus,
Nebraska; Sr. Charlita Foxhoven, OSF of
Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Arlene and her husband
William Rolf of Fullerton, Nebraska; Janet
Fielder of Omaha, Nebraska; and Shirley and her
husband Don Herbst of Earling, Iowa; her
sister-in-law Sharon Foxhoven of Algona, Iowa;
many nieces and nephews; other family members
and many friends.
A Mass of Christian
Burial was held on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at
St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, with
Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrating the 11:00 AM
service. Interment was held at St. Joseph’s
Cemetery in Earling, with Kevin Rolf, Craig
Foxhoven, Rick Herbst, Tom Fielder, Dave Noonan,
and Dean Herbst serving as casket bearers.

Jane E.
Foxhoven - Age 63
Jane Emma Foxhoven, daughter of
Walter George and Doris Susan (Finken)
Schneider, was born on June 19, 1945, in Harlan,
Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St.
Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia and
graduated from St. Boniface High School. After
high school, Jane continued her education at
Barnes Beauty College where she obtained her
beautician’s license.
On September 11, 1965,
Jane was united in marriage to Kenneth Foxhoven
at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia.
Two daughters were born to this union: Sherri
and Shawn.
Jane worked as a
beautician for over forty years and was also
employed at Communication Data Services in
Harlan, Iowa, in the mail opening department
since Dec. 14, 1998 . When Jane wasn’t working,
she enjoyed spending time outside in her garden,
bird watching, playing bingo, watching car
races, and spending time with her family.
Jane and Kenneth were
members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in
Earling, Iowa.
Jane died on Friday,
May 8, 2009, at University Medical Center in
Omaha, Nebraska, having attained the age of
sixty-three years, ten months, and nineteen
days. She is preceded in death by her parents
and her brother Russell.
She is survived by her
husband Kenneth of Earling, Iowa; their
daughters Sherri and her husband Dave Eubanks of
Scottsbluff, Nebraska and Shawn Foxhoven of
Greenville, South Carolina; four grandchildren:
Warren, Christian, Ford, and Quentin; her
siblings: Ken Schneider and his wife Kim of
Portsmouth, Iowa; Jerome Schneider and his wife
Connie of Westphalia, Iowa; Ric Schneider and

Cemetery in Earling with Warren Eubanks,
Christian Eubanks, Ford Eubanks, Quentin
Foxhoven Ripley, Ken Schneider, Jerome
Schneider, Ric Schneider, Allen Schneider acting
as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket
bearers were: Barry Schneider, Jeremy Schneider,

Harold
J. Frank - Age 85
Harold Joseph Frank, son of George
and Gertrude (Brauchman) Frank, was born on
March 31, 1925, in Maple River, Iowa. He was
baptized at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic
Church in Maple River and confirmed at Coon
Rapids Annunciation in Coon Rapids, Iowa, where
he attended high school until the age of
eighteen when he enlisted into the United States
Navy and served his country during World War II.
Harold was honorably discharged on June 29,
1949, having attained the rank of Ship’s
Serviceman Third. Upon his discharge, Harold
returned to Coon Rapids where he worked at Garst
and Thomas Seed Corn Company.
On November 11, 1950,
Harold was united in marriage to Charlotte Jean
Moore at Coon Rapids Annunciation. Four children
were born to this union: Linda, Larry, Teresa,
and Traci. After their wedding, Harold and
Charlotte made their home in Coon Rapids for a
short time before moving to Perry, Iowa, where
Harold worked for a foundry. In 1958, they moved
to Denison, Iowa, where Harold worked at
Farmland for twenty-six years, eventually
becoming the night supervisor. He retired from
Farmland in 1984. After his retirement, Harold
worked part-time at Pizza Hut and Variety
Distributors in Harlan.
Harold loved to spend
time with his family and enjoyed taking his
children on vacation throughout the years
including trips to the Black Hills in South
Dakota and Worlds of Fun in Kansas City. He also
enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping, and in later
years spent many days golfing.
Harold was a member of
St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, the
Shelby County VFW Post No. 941, and the Harlan
American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150.
Harold died on Sunday,
June 6, 2010, at Myrtue Medical Center in
Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of
eighty-five years, two months, and six days. He
is preceded in death by his parents; his
son-in-law, David Williams; his siblings: George
Frank; Cleadith Hubbell; Marion Hilgenberg; and
Arlene Lumsden.
He is survived by his
wife, Charlotte, of Harlan, Iowa; their
children: Linda and her husband Eugene Wageman
of Hancock, Iowa; Larry Frank of Phoenix,
Arizona; Teresa Williams; Traci and her husband
Michael Wilwerding all of Harlan, Iowa; nine
grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; his
siblings: Delores Duncan; Kenneth Frank; Margery
Golay all of Carroll, Iowa; Rosemary and her
husband Edward Weaver of Los Angeles,
California; Wilson Frank and his wife Tammy of
Flagstaff, Arizona; nieces; nephews; other
family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian
Burial was held on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at
St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa,
with Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrating the 11:00 AM
service. Military Rites were held at the Harlan
Cemetery by the Shelby County VFW Post No. 941
and the Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt
Post No. 150. Serving as casket bearers were:
Brian Wageman, Kevin Owen, Michael Wilwerding,
Jr., Jared Wilwerding, Brent Williams, Jacob
Wilwerding, Zack Sims, and Eric Pauley. 
Paul A.
Freeman - Age 36
Paul Allyn Freeman
was born in Ellensburg, Washington on October 1,
1971. He was the son of Nolan and Barbara
(Smith) Freeman. He attended Kittitas Elementary
school in Washington and then his family moved
to the Avoca, Iowa area when he was in the
fourth grade. He then became a student in the
AvoHa school system graduating with the class of
1990. Following high school he attended Iowa
Western Community College for two years.
Paul was united in marriage to Michelle Sarine
Wheatley on February 7, 1998 at the Trinity
Lutheran Church in Avoca. Paul was an employee
of Olesen Chevrolet-Olds for nearly nine years
and was currently working for Pottawattamie
County in the Secondary Roads division. He was
an EMT with the Avoca Fire and Rescue for nearly
ten years.
Paul enjoyed many hobbies such as camping,
hunting, riding his Harley, tractor pulling,
spending time with family and friends,
vacationing, the Kansas City Chiefs football
team, Nascar, and being a big Dale Earnhardt and
Junior fan. He was a member of the Trinity
Lutheran Church of Avoca, where he was baptized
and confirmed.
Paul died on Friday June 20, 2008 as the result
of a car accident. He had attained the age of
thirty six years, eight months and nineteen
days.
He is survived by his wife Michelle of Avoca,
his daughter Courtney and his infant son who is
due to be born on August 12, 2008; his mother
Barbara and her husband Dallas Popp of Avoca;
his father Nolan Freeman and his wife Ludy of
Marysville, Washington; two brothers: Ed Freeman
of Minden, Iowa and Jason Engle of Shelby, Iowa;
his sister Amy and her husband Wes Parker of
Avoca; grandfather Ralph Freeman, Sr and his
wife Mary of Kallispell, Montana; Aunts and
Uncles: Leslie (Bernie) Richard of LoLo,
Montana; John Smith of Ellensburg, Washington;
David (Jan) Freeman of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Mel
(DeDe) Freeman of Spokane, Washington; Valerie
(Leroy) Miller of Elko, Nevada and Jolene (Mike)
Olson of Gillette, Wyoming; father-in-law Don
Wheatley and his wife Cindy of Shelby;
mother-in-law Lori and her husband Mike Sampson
of Avoca; nieces, nephews, cousins, many other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June
25, 2008 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in
Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich
officiating. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery in
Avoca. Those serving as honorary casket bearers
were Ed Freeman, Jason Engle, Kevin Wheatley,
Rick West, Dennis West, Wes Parker and Brian
Snyder. Casket bearers were Chad Rhamy, Robb
Johnson (currently serving in Iraq), Greg Roush,
Kevin Cordes, Doug Engel, Derek Knop, Eric
Nelson, Dave Weirich and Travis Christian.

Robert
W. Fresener - Age 85
Robert Willis Fresener was born on
May 20, 1923, to John and Winifred (Meister)
Fresener near Walnut, Iowa. He attended country
school and graduated from Walnut High School
with the Class of 1942.
He entered the United
States Army on January 16, 1943 and served
overseas in Central Europe during World War II.
He was united in marriage to Ardelle Kite on
December 2, 1945. After his discharge in
February of 1946, he returned to the Walnut area
and farmed south of town. He also drove a truck
for Suhr’s and Jacobsen’s and worked at the
Walnut Elevator and the Shelby Elevator. He
retired in 1985.
Robert was a member of
the Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut,
Iowa, the Walnut American Legion Post No. 422,
the Walnut Amvets, and the Veterans of Foreign
Wars.
He enjoyed playing
pitch and bingo and would always open his gifts
early.
Robert lived at Peace
Haven Retirement Home in Walnut with his wife
until Ardelle’s death in 2005. He became a
resident of the Avoca Nursing Home in October of
2008 and it was there that he died on Monday,
May 18, 2009, having attained the age of
eighty-five years, eleven months, and
twenty-eight days. He was preceded in death by
his parents, his wife Ardelle, and his brother
Cletus.

conducted the 10:30 AM funeral service on
Friday, May 22, 2009 at Peace United Church of
Christ in Walnut, Iowa. Casket bearers were Doug
Matthies, Donnie Bauerkemper, Walt Sampson, Rob
Sampson, Dean Ausdemore, and Rex Sievers. The
AmVets Post No. 45 and Walnut Legion Post No.
422 provided military rites at Layton Township
Cemetery in Walnut.

Therese "Trixie"
Fromm - Age 77
Therese "Trixie"
Fromm, daughter of Henry and Cecelia (Mueller)
Kaufman, was born on December 3, 1930, in
Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at
St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling and
graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School.
On November 16, 1959, she was united in marriage
to Peter Fromm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church
in Earling. Three children were born to this
union: John, Pete, and Mary. After their
marriage, the couple resided just west of
Defiance, Iowa, on the farm that Peter’s parents
farmed. Therese worked at the Shelby County
Court House as a secretary to the Clerk of
Court, but when their children were born, she
became a stay at home mother.
After the children were older, Therese began
working at CDS in Harlan and as a caretaker for
her aunt Hilda. In 1995, she retired from CDS
but continued to care for Hilda until her death.
Therese was a loving mother and grandmother and
enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning, playing
horsetail and cribbage, and taking care of her
flowers. She was also very active in St. Peter’s
Catholic Church in Defiance.
Therese died on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at
Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, having attained
the age of seventy-seven years, five months, and
twenty-five days. She is preceded in death by
her parents; her husband Peter; her sisters:
Mary Mundt, Helen Reinig, and Jenny Weller; and
her brothers: Joseph, Frank, Louis and Henry E.
Kaufman.
She is survived by her children: John Fromm of
Defiance, Iowa; Pete Fromm and his wife Marla of
Ankeny, Iowa; and Mary and her husband John
Dentlinger of Manning, Iowa; five grandchildren:
Anna, Kate, and Jacob Dentlinger and Nathan and
Tyler Fromm; her sister Peggy and her husband
Martin Schwarte of Harlan; her brother Mike
Kaufman and his friend Marlene of Omaha,
Nebraska; her brothers-in-law Gordon Weller of
Westside, Iowa and Leo Fromm and his wife Ann of
Marshalltown, Iowa; her sisters-in-law Vivian
Kaufman of Woodbine, Iowa and Virginia Muellman
of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other
family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday,
May 31, 2008 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in
Defiance, Iowa. Rev. Tom Coenen officiated the
1:00 PM service. Serving as casket bearers were:
Dave Finken, Randy Schwarte, Pete Finken, Gary
Weller, Jerry Kaufman, and Mark Kaufman.
Interment was held at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery
in Defiance, Iowa. 
Howard L.
Fuller - Age 79
Howard Lester Fuller, Jr., the son of Howard and
Dorothy Newman Fuller, Sr., was born on September
19, 1927 in New York, New York. He attended school
in Pottstown, Illinois until the eighth grade. After
his schooling Howard started helping his father on
the farm. When he was seventeen, he enlisted into
the United States Navy. Howard served his country
from 1944 to 1948 with the Navy Amphibious Corps in
the South Pacific where he received numerous medals.
After his discharge from the Navy, Howard moved to
Avoca, Iowa and made his home. He was employed as a
truck driver for Melvin Trucking, Pabst Blue Ribbon
and finally with Stowe Ready Mix. He enjoyed
woodworking, making signs and building doll
furniture. He was a member of the American Legion
Post in Avoca and was very proud of his military
background. He was very meticulous with his cement
work and even helped pour sidewalks for the Avoca
playground.
Howard died on Friday, August 31, 2007 at his home
in Avoca, Iowa having attained the age of
seventy-nine years, eleven months and twelve days.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister,
Virginia Smith and four brothers: John, Russell,
Milton and Arthur and one grandchild.
Survivors include his children: Michael Fuller and
Daniel Fuller and his wife, Roberta, all of
Bloomington, Illinois and Cinthy Beach of Peoria,
Illinois; his grandchildren: Stacy Fuller of Hudson,
Illinois; David Fuller of Bloomington, Illinois;
Rayna and her husband Lester Kauffman of Wapella,
Illinois and Amanda Fuller of Bloomington, Illinois;
six great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other
relatives and many friends.
Graveside Services were held on Thursday, September
6, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Graceland Cemetery in
Avoca, Iowa with Father John Frost as the Clergy.
Serving as honorary bearers were Barb Popp, Arlene
Roush, Carol Gubbles, Kathy Jacobsen and Shona
Bramman. Military Rites by the Fred Funston Post No.
227.

Herbert J.
Funk - Age 86
Herbert Joseph
Funk was born on March 3, 1922, to Lawrence and
Barbara (Windeshausen) Funk at Langley Field,
Virginia. A few years later, he moved with his
parents to a farm west of Panama, Iowa. He
attended country schools until he entered St.
Mary’s Catholic School in Portsmouth where he
graduated.
He was drafted into the
military in 1942 and was discharged in January
of 1946. After his discharge from the service,
he attended Iowa State University where he
received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1951.
In the summer of 1953, he took employment with
St. Benedict’s College in Atchison, Kansas, and
remained there for six years. While working at
St. Benedict’s, he went to Kansas State
University where he received a Master of Science
degree in 1957. He left St. Benedict’s in 1959
to return to Iowa State University where he
received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in
1964.
Herbert began teaching
at Creighton College and stayed for seven years
before going to Creighton University where he
taught for twenty-eight years. He returned to
St. Benedict’s in Kansas and retired in 1966. In
the fall of 1968, he returned to Creighton and
remained there until he retired again in 1990.
He became a resident of
Elm Crest Retirement Community in 1997 and moved
to Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa, in
October of 2002. It was there that he died on
Monday, May 12, 2008, having attained the age of
eighty-six years, two months, and nine days. He
was preceded in death by his parents, his
brothers Lawrence Funk and Harold Funk, and his
sisters, Marie Funk and Josephine Arkfeld.
Herbert is survived by
his brothers: Alfred Funk of Buffalo, New York,
Joseph Funk of Citrus Heights, California, and
Frank Funk and his wife Judy of Portsmouth,
Iowa; and his sister Cecelia Wegner of Woodbine,
Iowa; his brother-in-law George Arkfeld of
Oceanside, California; his sister-in-law Lucille
Funk of Kirkland, Washington; nieces and
nephews, other family members, and friends.

Burial was held on Friday, May 23, 2008 with
Rev. John Dorton celebrating the 10:30 AM
service at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic
Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Casket bearers were
John Wegner, Wayne Zitzlsperger, Pat Hoffmann,
Bill Wegner, Kyle Funk, and Alan Miller with
Military Rites performed by Portsmouth American
Legion Post No. 547 and Shelby County VFW Post
No. 942 at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth.
