Edith A. Cade - Age 88
Edith A. Cade,
the daughter of John and
Flora (Meyer) Griffith, was
born on September 27, 1917,
at Walnut, Iowa. She
attended Walnut Schools
where she was a forward on
the school basketball team
and graduated with the class
of 1935. Upon receiving her
education, she took one
semester of graduate work.
On June 4, 1938, Edith was
united in marriage to M.
LaVerne Cade at Maryville,
Missouri. One daughter was
born to this union: Karen.
After their marriage, the
couple resided in Walnut,
Iowa, where Edith was
employed with the Walnut
Telephone Company from 1937
until 1939. LaVerne died on
October 5, 1945. She was
employed with the Walnut
Bureau in 1948 as a linotype
operator and remained there
for twenty-five years. In
1974, she trained as a desk
clerk for the Colonial Motor
Inn and remained in that
position until September of
1989.
Edith enjoyed gardening,
doing cross word puzzles,
and watching sports on TV,
the Chicago Bulls being her
favorite team. She was a
very kind person who was
never hesitant to lend a
helping hand. Edith always
had a positive attitude and
was a strong and independent
woman who would tell it as
it was.
Edith died on Thursday, May
25, 2006, at the Oakland
Manor in Oakland, Iowa,
having attained the age of
eighty-eight years, seven
months and twenty-eight
days. In addition to her
parents, and her husband,
LaVerne, Edith was preceded
in death by her brothers and
sisters: Alderman, George,
Albert, Frank, and Fred
Griffith and Mary Smith and
Viola Reed.
Survivors include her
daughter, Karen and her
husband, Dick Andersen of
Harlan, Iowa; three
grandchildren: Kenneth
Andersen and his wife, Tammy
of Avoca, Iowa; Teresa and
her husband Randy Schnack of
Oakland, Iowa; Linda and her
husband David Petersen of
Harlan, Iowa; six
great-grandchildren; two
step-great grandchildren;
nieces, nephews, other
relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held
on Saturday, May 27, 2006,
at the Pauley Jones Funeral
Home in Walnut, Iowa, at
10:00 A.M. with Pastor
Dianna Holland officiating.
Interment was in Layton
Township Cemetery in Walnut,
Iowa, with Teresa Schnack,
Tammy Andersen and Linda
Petersen serving as honorary
casket bearers. Serving as
casket bearers were Kenneth
Andersen, Randy Schnack,
Dave Petersen, Shawn
Brockman, Ryan Petersen, and
Roger Schnack.

Miles "Tump" Camery - Age 78
Miles J. Camery was born on April 30, 1929 to Joseph and Cecil (Brodersen) Camery in
Harlan, Iowa. He attended Harlan High School and graduated with the class of
1947. He went on to Iowa State University and played football for two years
before returning to Harlan.
On December 15, 1950, Miles was
united in marriage to Norma Jean Hansen of rural Harlan. Two daughters were
born to this union: Barbara and Kim.
He was
employed at the Iowa Department of Conservation as a game warden in 1956 and
was with them for six years before joining the U. S. Fish and Wildlife
Service in 1962. He was first stationed in Beaumont, Texas, relocated to
Anna-Jonesboro, Illinois in 1965, and then to the Madison/Sun Prairie,
Wisconsin area in 1967. In 1974, they relocated to Glen Bernie, Maryland,
and in 1976 to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they resided for the past
thirty-one years. Miles retired in 1982.
He
was a longtime member of the Albuquerque Retriever Club, an avid sports fan
and outdoorsman.
Miles died on May 30, 2007, having attained the age of seventy-eight years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Morgan.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Norma Jean of Albuquerque,
New Mexico; his daughters Barbara and her husband Dale Reininger of Sun
Prairie, Wisconsin and Kim and her husband Chip Millick of Falmouth, Maine;
two grandchildren: Hannah and Ben Millick; his sisters Joan Prather of Lake
Quivira, Kansas and Jan and her husband Lloyd Pientok of St. Francis,
Wisconsin; his sister-in-law Agnes Camery; nieces, nephews, other family
members, and many friends.
A
Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, August 18, 2007, at Pauley
Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Dave Swinton officiated the 2:00
PM ceremony. Interment was at Harlan Cemetery.

Ethel L. Campbell - Age 85
Ethel Leona Jensen Campbell, the daughter of Louis
and Millie Paulsen Jensen, was born on February 23, 1919, in Harlan, Iowa.
Ethel was always outdoors and enjoyed fishing and going trapping with her
father. Ethel attended school in Harlan and graduated from the Harlan High
School on May 26, 1938.
Ethel was united in marriage to William "Bill"
Campbell on September 19, 1938, at a Presbyterian Church in Maryville,
Missouri. They were the parents of one son William, JR. Ethel worked as a
bookkeeper at Merrill Canning Company for many years. In 1963, Ethel and
Bill bought the Brickyard Orchard. Bill and Ethel created a legend by
serving Shelby County "Brickyard Apple Cider". Ethel took great pride in her
garden, there were never any weeds and she had a three acre strawberry
patch. Every Christmas, she enjoyed making a special box of cookies for each
grandchild. During her summertime visits to her family, she always brought
along the same special cookies and always left their freezer full of them.
When Ethel’s health began to fail she moved to Little Flower Haven in
Earling, Iowa.
Ethel died on June 5, 2004,
at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa having attained the age of
eighty-five years, three months and ten days.
In addition to her parents,
Ethel is preceded in death by her husband, William, who died on January 16,
2000, and her sister, Helen Obrecht. She is survived by her son, William
Campbell, Jr. and his wife, Mary Beth of Harlan; five grandchildren:
Kimberly and her husband Tim Budzon, Kelly and her husband, Larry Tate,
Kristy Campbell, Kevin Campbell and his wife, Kathy, Kasey Campbell and his
wife, Debbie; ten great grandchildren: Nicolas and Alexis Budzon, Tanner and
Makenna Tate, Megan Campbell, Tori and Billy Webber, Shenandoah and Kevin
Campbell, Jr. and Austin Cuddie-Hudson; one brother, Louis Jensen and his
wife, Virginia of Harlan; sisters-in-law, Jessie Kendrick of Shelby, Iowa
and Betty Diggle, of Avoca, Iowa; besides nieces, nephews, other relatives
and many friends.
Funeral Services were held
on Thursday, June 10, 2004 at 10:30 AM at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in
Harlan, Iowa with Pastor Greg White officiating. Serving as casket bearers
were Charles L. Obrecht, Lyle Obrecht, Rodney Jensen, Mike Wolhutter, Robert
Scheel, Larry Obrecht, Joe Gross and Mark Brower. Interment was held in the
Harlan Cemetery, in Harlan, Iowa. 
Kasey Campbell
- Age 28
Kasey J Campbell, son of Bill and Mary Beth (Boggess)
Campbell, was born on March 5, 1980, in
Pensacola, Florida. He was baptized at St.
Paul’s Catholic Church in Pensacola and was
confirmed at Divine Redeemer Church in Colorado
Springs, Colorado. During high school, he played
baseball and maintained his love for sports
after his graduation from Doherty High School.
He loved to watch the Atlanta Braves play. He
received his Associates Degree in Fire Science
from Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado
Springs.
On May 22, 2004, Kasey was united in marriage
to Deborah "Debbie" Arnett at Holy Trinity
Catholic Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
He worked as a supervisor for American Medical
Response in Colorado before the couple moved to
Harlan, Iowa, where he became a dispatcher for
Shelby County.
Kasey loved to be outside and worked part-time at
his father’s orchard, always coming up with
ideas and looking up plans on the internet on
how to make it bigger and better. Fall was his
favorite time of year and he would ride his
four-wheeler, go hunting, and do anything just
to be outdoors.
Kasey died on Friday, August 8, 2008, having
attained the age of twenty-eight years, five
months, and three days. He is preceded in death
by his grandparents Williams and Ethel Campbell
and Fletcher and Alberta Boggess.
He is survived by his wife Debbie Campbell of
Harlan, Iowa; his parents Bill and Mary Beth
Campbell of Harlan; his sisters: Kimberly and
her husband Tim Budzon of Colorado Springs,
Colorado, Kelly and her husband Larry Tate of
Colorado Springs, and Kristy Campbell of
Colorado Springs; his brother Kevin Campbell and
his wife Kathy of Harlan; his nieces and
nephews: Megan, Austin, Nicolas, Tori,
Shenandoah, Tanner, Billy, Alexis, Makenna, and
Kevin, Jr.; other family members and many
friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday,
August 14, 2008, with Rev. Bob Hoefler
celebrating the 1:00 PM service at St. Michael’s
Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Casket bearers
were Kevin Campbell, Scott Harrell, Jake Budzon,
Tim Budzon, Matt Thieme, and Larry Tate.
Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.

George W. Chambers - Age 79
George Winfield Chambers was born
on March 28, 1927, to William J. and Matilda (McConnell) Chambers at their
home east of Harlan. He attended school at Jackson Township Number Three
country school. After graduation, he worked for different farmers, the
Harlan landfill, Red Adams Construction, and for several years at the Harlan
Municipal Utilities.
"High Pockets", as he was known,
was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kirkman and regularly
attended services. George was also a member of the Kirkman Volunteer Fire
Department and was proud to serve on the department. He also looked forward
to being in various parades in the surrounding communities with the Kirkman
Fire Department.
He loved to go out picking
raspberries, going to sporting events, and socializing with friends. George
enjoyed gardening immensely often taking his crops to the farmer’s markets
in Harlan and Denison and sharing them with others.
Saturday, October 28,
2006, was his last trip to the Harlan Farmer’s Market. He stated, "it’s
better going there than looking at four walls" since he had been in and out
of the hospital and was glad to be back where he belonged.
After his retirement, George
moved to Irwin, Iowa and later to an apartment in Kirkman. He lived in
Kirkman until his death on November 2, 2006, at Myrtue Medical Center in
Harlan, Iowa. George attained the age of seventy-nine years, seven months,
and twenty-six days. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and
Matilda, and his brother, Lyle.
George is survived by his sister
Docia and her husband Art Linde of Harlan, Iowa, nieces and nephews, his
close friends Russ and Elaine Baughman, other family and many friends.
Pastor Keith Pals officiated at a
Celebration of Life service that was held on Saturday, November 4, 2006, at
1:30 PM at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket
bearers were Joe Vandenberg, Mike Rasmussen, Russ Baughman, Scott Hansen, Ed
Hansen, and Glen Arnold. Serving as casket bearers were Bill Linde, Willie
Baughman, Bob Linde, John Linde, Chuck Baughman, and Jim Linde. The Kirkman
Volunteer Fire Department served as Honor Guard at the interment in Bowman’s
Grove Cemetery, Rural Harlan, Iowa.

Gerda
Christensen - 91
Gerda Christensen was
born on March 17, 1916, to Soren and Petrea
(Christensen) Nielsen in Harlan, Iowa. She attended
school in Harlan and after graduating from Harlan
High School, she went on to receive her normal
training as a teacher. She taught for a short while
in Shelby County country schools.
She became a caretaker
of children for various families in the Harlan area and had also worked for
E. M. Christensen and Pauley Funeral Home in Harlan. It was at the funeral
home that she met and began working with Arnold C. Christensen, whom she wed
on June 8, 1964 in Denison, Iowa.
After their marriage,
the couple resided in Harlan. Gerda continued to live in their Harlan
residence after Arnold died in 1988 and only became a resident of Elm Crest
Retirement Community in August of 2007.
It was there that she
died on January 10, 2008, having attained the age of ninety-one years, nine
months, and twenty-four days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband Arnold, her brother Richard Paulsen, and her sister Norma
Christensen.
She is survived by her
sisters Lillian Paulsen of Harlan, Iowa, and Glenda and her husband Franklin
Hanson of Omaha, Nebraska, nieces and nephews, other family members, and
friends.
Graveside services were
held on Monday, January 14, 2008, with Pastor Heather Ploen presiding over
the 2:00 PM service at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.

Irene Christensen - Age 93
Irene Christensen, the daughter
of William and Louise (Zobrist) Everhart, was born on October 3, 1912, at
Hancock, Iowa. She attended Hancock Schools, and was a member of the
graduating class of 1930. After graduation, Irene attended beauty school at
Barnes in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
On April 25, 1936, Irene was
united in marriage to Henry Christensen at Council Bluffs, Iowa. To this
union one son was born: Bill. After their marriage, the couple resided in
Hancock where Henry helped Irene's father with the family business, Everhart
Implement and Irene operated a beauty parlor on the back porch of their
home. Henry died on September 18, 1981. After the death of her husband,
Irene became a resident of Peace Haven Retirement Home in Walnut, Iowa, and
then the Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Avoca, Iowa.
Irene liked music and enjoyed
going dancing with her husband, Henry. She enjoyed crocheting and watching
Chicago Cubs Baseball games. Irene also liked to play dice, Bunco.
Irene died on Wednesday, July 5,
2006, at the Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Avoca, Iowa, having
attained the age of ninety-three years, nine months and two days. In
addition to her parents, and her husband, Irene was preceded in death by her
sister, Lucille Fischer.
Survivors include her son, Bill
Christensen and his wife, Marjorie of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two
granddaughters: Kim and her husband, Steve Ashley of Kenosha, Wisconsin; and
Lisa Christensen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, July 8, 2006 at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa with
burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Hancock, Iowa. Wayne Paulsen officiated and
serving as casket bearers were Bill Christensen, Jan Flemming and Steve
Ashley. Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca was in charge of arrangements.

Jim
R. Christensen - Age 65
James Robert
Christensen of Loveland passed away at his home on January 1, 2008, after a
three year battle against Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was comforted by the
presence of his loving family. Jim was born in Harlan, Iowa, on January 5,
1942, to Lehman and Edith Christensen.
He graduated from
Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1960. After meeting
on a blind date, Jim and Carol (Petersen) were married on June 15, 1963, in
Anita, Iowa. They lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and rural Oakland, Iowa,
before moving to Loveland in 1988.
Jim worked as a meat
cutter for Safeway for nearly 30 years in Iowa, Nebraska, and Colorado.
After retiring from Safeway, he had a lawn business for five years and then
worked as a driver for Thompson School District for ten years. Jim served in
many areas at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Oakland and at Mount Olive
Lutheran Church in Loveland.
Jim was the proud
father of sons Chris and Wife Beth of Pierson, Iowa; Craig and wife Mary of
Highlands Ranch, Colorado; and daughter Beth of Orlando, Florida. His
beloved grandchildren are Matthew and Heather Christensen of Sioux City,
Iowa and Margaret and Elinor Christensen of Highlands Ranch, Colorado. He is
also survived by sisters, Joanne and her husband Norman Mathiasen and
Barbara Hansen all of Harlan, Iowa; sisters-in-law Fran Christensen of
Council Bluffs, Iowa and Carol J. Christensen of Harlan; many nieces,
nephews, cousins, friends, and his faithful companion, Conchita (the
Chocolate Lab). He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Don and
Jack Christensen, nephews Darrell and Kent Christensen, and brother-in-law
Leland Hansen.
A graveside service was
held Sunday, January 6, 2008, at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor
Dave Swinton officiated the 2:00 PM service.

Margaret M. Christensen - Age 92
Margaret Marie Christensen, the daughter of Andrew
and Hannah Christensen Hess, was born on February 12, 1912, on the family
farm in Jackson Township, Shelby County, Iowa. She attended country school
in Jackson Township. Margaret later became a licensed beautician and worked
in Omaha, Nebraska, and Shenandoah, Iowa.
On August 4, 1933, she was
united in marriage to Edward M. Christensen at Fremont, Nebraska. Six
children were born to this union: Donald, Larry, Roger, Richard, Jane and
Nancy. After their marriage, Margaret and Edward made their home in the
Jacksonville area where they farmed all of their married life. Margaret also
was employed at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, where she was a
cook, retiring in her eighty’s. Edward died on November 12, 1971 and
Margaret moved to Harlan in 1972.
Margaret was a great wife,
mother and grandmother. Her family was very important to her and she enjoyed
being a homemaker. She could often be heard bragging about her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Margaret loved to garden, cook, sew,
and watch television. She like to watch football and would listen to every
Harlan football game on the radio. While a resident at Westridge Apartments,
she enjoyed playing cards. Margaret was a spunky lady with an incredible
memory and a strong will.
On Wednesday, December 29,
2004. Margaret died at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, having
attained the age ninety-two years, ten months and seventeen days. In
addition to her parents and her husband, Margaret was preceded in death by
two sons, Richard and Donald, and her brothers, Wilford and Everett.
Survivors include her
children, Larry Christensen of Des Moines, Iowa; Jane Morrison of Council
Bluffs, Iowa; Roger Christensen and his wife, Joann of Harlan, Iowa; Nancy
and her husband, Larry Klein of Harlan, Iowa; seven grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; other relatives and a great many friends.
Funeral services were held
on Friday, December 31, 2004, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan,
Iowa, at 10:00 A.M. with Pastor Heather Ploen officiating. Interment was in
Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa, with Tammy Morrison, Marcy
Paden, Susan Morrison, and Jody Rau serving as honorary casket bearers.
Serving as casket bearers were Tracy Klein, Eddie Paden, Clifford Morrison,
III, Kevin Morrison, Eugene Hess, and Gary Christensen.

Myrna L. Christensen - Age 64
Myrna Loy Christensen,
the daughter of Arnold and Frankie (Jorgensen) Bladt was born on April 10,
1940 in Jackson Township, Shelby County, Iowa. She attended Lay No. 6 rural
school and Audubon and Elk Horn High School, graduating in 1958.
Myrna was united in marriage to John Walter Christensen on November 3, 1957
at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church. Four sons were born to this union: Scott,
Jerry, Grant and Mike. After their first son was born, John and Myrna farmed
together in Jackson Township. Myrna also worked for Variety Distributors for
twenty-six years. John and Myrna lived on the farm until 2001, when they
moved into Harlan to their present residence.
Myrna was a devoted mother to her four sons. Over the years, Myrna followed
the boys’ sporting and theatrical activities, was active in her church, and
enjoyed painting, sewing, photography, mowing outdoors and handwork. Most of
all, Myrna cared deeply for her family. She loved family gatherings and
spending time with her grandchildren. Myrna was strong in love, will and
faith. Her strength inspired those who knew her. It sustained her through
many years and uplifted her in the end. On the night before her death, she
once again gave her family comfort by waking up to greet them so they could
see her smile, hear her laugh and hear her voice one last time. Myrna died
on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa
having attained the age of sixty-four years, nine months and one day. Myrna
is preceded in death by her father, Arnold, her sister, Carol Magnussen and
her brother, Dean Bladt.
She is survived by her husband John of Harlan, Iowa; her children: Scott
Christensen and his fiancé Cindy Swensen of Omaha, Nebraska; Jerome
Christensen and his wife Jenny of Castle Rock, Colorado; Grant Christensen
and his wife Rita of Omaha, Nebraska; and Michael Christensen and his wife
Emily of Oakland, Iowa; her mother, Frankie Bladt of Elk Horn, Iowa; eight
grandchildren: Josh, Adam, Jacob, Joni, Marc, Hannah, Grayson and Ainsley;
one sister, Vicky and her husband, Dan Wolken of Hereferd, Arizona, nieces,
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, January 14, 2005, at Bethlehem
Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Ron
Rasmussen and Pastor Henry Flessner officiating. Interment was in the
Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa, with John Magnussen, Jacob
Christensen, Ken Magnussen, Josh Christensen, Marc Christensen and Adam
Christensen serving as casket bearers.

Ruth
V. Christensen - Age 88
Ruth Virginia
Christensen, the daughter of Ralph and Karolina (Dethlefs) Brown, was born
in James Township, Iowa on March 29, 1919. She was baptized and confirmed in
the Avoca Lutheran Church. Ruth attended school in the Hancock area. After
her schooling she was employed by the Hancock Telephone Company.
Ruth was united in
marriage to Milton "Chris" Christensen on August 31, 1974 in the Little
Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. After their marriage they moved to Huntington,
West Virginia where Milton was employed with the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers. They remained there until his retirement in 1989. They moved back
to the Avoca area in 1991. Ruth enjoyed working in her garden, raising
African Violets, reading and doing crewel embroidery.
Ruth died on Monday,
October 22, 2007 at the Avoca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Avoca,
Iowa having attained the age of eighty-eight years, six months and
twenty-three days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her first
husband Elmer Piittmann, her second husband Chris, sister Esther Neighbors
and brothers: Kenneth, Wilbert and Lawrence Brown.
Ruth is survived by her
sister, Dorothy Hildebrand of Hancock, Iowa; her sister in law, Eleanor
Brown of Avoca, Iowa; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many
friends.
Funeral services were
held on October 24, 2007 at 10:30 A.M. at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home,
Avoca Chapel, with Deacon David Gobeli of the Hancock United Methodist
Church officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Hancock, Iowa.
Serving as Honorary Bearers were Randy Brown and Darrell Dreager. Casket
Bearers were Gary Brown, Doug Brown, Mike Harris, Greg Brown, James Brown
and Rick Brown

Clyde C. Clark - Age 87
Clyde Calvin Clark, the son of Walter and Emma Etta Worley Clark, was born
on August 31, 1916, on a farm south of Beloit, Kansas. He grew to adulthood
and attended school in Beloit. Later in his life, Clyde was baptized and
confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa.
A few
years after school, Clyde joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. He then
enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country during World
War II in the India, China and Burma fronts. After World War II, Clyde
continued his service to his country in the military by serving for over
twenty-one years before retiring and receiving his honorable discharge in
1960.
On
January 25, 1949, Clyde was united in marriage to Helen Patten at St.
Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Four children were born to
this union: Sandy, Diane, Dwight and Doug. After their marriage, they moved
several times while he was employed as a Federal Meat Inspector throughout
the Midwest. Clyde and Helen also spent ten years farming near Missouri
Valley, Iowa before moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota where he worked for a
short time with the United States Postal Service and then as again as a
Federal Meat Inspector. In 1973, Clyde transferred to Harlan where he worked
in Denison and Harlan for several years. He semi-retired in 1981 while he
continued to work part-time as a meat inspector.
In
1991, Clyde fully retired so that he and Helen could spend time in Omaha for
several years to help take care of their son Doug who was seriously injured
in a work accident. After three years, they returned to Harlan and this has
been their home since. Clyde was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church
in Harlan, Iowa.
He died
on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa,
having attained the age of eighty-seven years, eight months and twenty-two
days. In addition to his parents, Clyde was preceded in death by his brother
and sister, Ray Clark and Gretta Nebur.
Survivors include his wife, Helen of Harlan, Iowa; his children, Sandy Clark
of Omaha, Nebraska; Diane and her husband, Mark Meiners of Lincoln,
Nebraska; Dwight Clark of Omaha, Nebraska; Doug Clark of Omaha, Nebraska;
seven grandchildren: John J. Comerford, Thomas P. Comerford and his wife,
Mary; Christy and her husband Mark Puev; Julie and her husband Josh
Sovereign; Matt, Wendy and Jamie; four great-grandchildren: Christopher
Comerford; Olivia and Owen Sovereign; Alexis Puev; other relatives and many
friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at 10:30 AM at
St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa with Rev. Robert Hoefler as
the celebrant and Fr. John Comerford as the concelebrant. Serving as casket
bearers were Mark Puev, Dwight Clark, Thomas Comerford, John Comerford, Doug
Clark and Mark Meiners. Interment was held in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in
Earling, Iowa with Military Rites by the American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post
No. 150 and the Shelby County VFW Post No. 941.

Dorothy A. Clark - Age 69
Dorothy Agnes Clark, daughter of Charles Lewis
and Anna Elizabeth (Termuhlen) Chupp, was born on April 28, 1935, in rural
Shelby County, Iowa, near Dunlap. She was the middle child of her six
siblings. Dorothy was raised around the Dunlap area and attended school in
Dunlap until the death of her mother in 1951 when she then moved to Harlan,
Iowa to live with her aunt.
Dorothy, the mother of four children, was a loving and caring mother,
grandmother and great grandmother. She loved her family and was very close
to her brothers and sisters. Dorothy made many friends, whom she considered
family, while she was living in Harlan for over thirty years at the Country
Care Center. They were very dear to her. She died on July 2, 2004, at the
Dunlap Nursing and Rehabilitation Center having attained the age of
sixty-nine years, two months and four days.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her sister,
Margaret Harper and her brothers, Theodore and Charles. She is survived by
her children: Robert Clark and his wife Lonna of Harlan, Iowa, Patricia and
her husband Carl Woodward of Oakland, Iowa, Sherry and her husband Michael
Cook of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Dale Clark of Des Moines, Iowa; her eight
grandchildren: Rebecca Vinke, Carl Joshua Woodward, Jerad Woodward, Jeremy
Barber, James Barber, Jason Barber Justin Barber and Kevin Clark; her great
grandchild, Haley Grace Barber; her sisters and brother: Eleanor Summerfield
of Dunlap, Iowa; Laura Chupp of Council Bluffs, Iowa and James Chupp and his
wife Jeanette of Des Moines, Iowa; nieces and nephews, other relatives and
many friends.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Pauley Jones Funeral
Home in Harlan, Iowa, at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Paul Strittmatter officiating.
Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa, with Jason Barber
serving as a honorary casket bearer. Serving as casket bearers were Todd
Vinke, Dave McDonald, James Barber, Ralph Widman, Michael Cook, and Justin
Barber.

Lavon
Jacobsen Clark - Age 64
Lavon Rae Frederiksen was born on April
15, 1943 to Elmer and Helen
(Mercer) Frederiksen in Kimballton, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at
Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton. She attended grade school in
Kimballton and high school in Elk Horn.
On June 13, 1964,
she was united in marriage to Ronald Jacobsen. Four children were born to
this union: Terry, Leslie, Matt, and Ron, Jr. They lived in Harlan, Iowa,
until Ron’s death in 1968. Lavon then returned to the Kimballton area to
raise her family.
When Lavon
wasn’t busy with her children and their activities, she made wooden crafts.
She also had a collection of porcelain dolls and was active in the
Kimballton Dinner Theater. She adored her grandchildren and loved spending
every minute she could with them.
Lavon was
married to Donald Clark on May 26, 1990, at the First Christian Church in
Harlan. She worked at the Kimballton Café, Dania Sko, and the Salem Lutheran
Home in Elk Horn. Lavon became a resident of the Salem Lutheran Home in July
of 2007 and it was there that she died on Monday, September 17, 2007, having
attained the age of sixty-four years, five months, and two days. She was
preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Nancy, her first husband Ron
Jacobsen, her husband Don Clark, step mother Annabelle Frederiksen and step
brother Wayne Hald.
Lavon is
survived by her children: Terry Jacobsen and his wife Karlene of Harlan,
Iowa; their children Nate, Molly and Shelby; Leslie and her husband Richard
Vonnahme of Carroll, Iowa; Their children; Jenny, Andrew and Kari; Matt
Jacobsen and his wife Mindy of Atlantic, Iowa; Their children; Ashley,
Holleigh, Destiny and Allyiah; and Ron Jacobsen and his wife LaVonne of
Harlan; their children Brandon, Kara, Markis and Gavin; and Becky Pike;
sister Sarah Kunik of Kimballton, step sisters Margaret and her husband
Barry Beck of Sioux City, Iowa, and Eileen and her husband Harold Honeck of
Grimes, Iowa; nieces and nephews, other family members, and many friends.
A funeral
service was held on Thursday, September 20, 2007, with Pastor Tony Ede
officiating the 10:30 AM service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan,
Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Markis Schones, Andrew Vonnahme, Nate
Jacobsen, and Brandon Jacobsen. Serving as casket bearers were Cameron Kunik,
Shawn Underwood, Jack Underwood, Jim Moreland, Don Palijo, and Jeff
Moreland. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.

Margaret Coenen - Age 97
Margaret Pauline Coenen, the
daughter of Melchior and Theresa Klein Schwery was born on a farm on August
31, 1907 near Panama, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s
Catholic Church in Panama and she also attended school in Panama and then
stayed home to help her mother with her siblings and in addition, she
assisted with the task of baking 9 nine loaves of bread every other day.
Margaret was united in marriage to Wilfred Coenen at St. Mary’s Catholic
Church on June 18, 1929, and they made their home on a farm near Westphalia,
Iowa. Their wedding dance was the first to be held in the newly erected St.
Boniface School Hall. After their marriage, they farmed in the area until
their retirement in 1969 and then moved into their present home in
Westphalia, where Margaret was fortunate enough to remain until her death.
They were the parents of six children: Ivo, David, Vicki, Gloria, Marvin and
Twyla. Margaret enjoyed being a 4-H leader while her children were growing
up. Margaret also raised and dressed chicken as well as selling their eggs.
She often made all of her children’s clothing, even their overcoats. She
also spent much time gardening and tending to their large strawberry patch.
If
there was one thing that Margaret was well known for, it was her crocheting.
Her talents were amazing and her creations were breath-taking. She made all
kinds of crocheted Christmas ornaments, bells , Santa’s , but her specialty
was her Angels . All of her friends and family could count on receiving one
of her delicate creations on special occasions. Margaret and Wilfred enjoyed
dancing, especially square dancing. She enjoyed traveling to Twyla’s home in
Ohio and was always willing to fly, even to Alaska.
Margaret died on Monday, November 15, 2004 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in
Harlan, Iowa having attained the age of ninety-seven years, two months and
fifteen days. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her
husband, Wilfred, who died on February 19, 1990, her son, Ivo, several
brothers and sisters: Alfred, Verena Maiwald, Viola Leinen, Magdalena Hodapp,
LaVern, and Melvin.
Survivors include her children: David Coenen and his wife, Karen of Council
Bluffs, Iowa, Vicki and her husband, Larry Schmitz of Westphalia, Iowa,
Gloria and her husband, Norman Schmitz of Westphalia, Iowa, Marvin Coenen
and his wife, Carol of Omaha, Nebraska and Twyla and her husband, Phillip
Grooms of Columbus, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Bernadine (Ivo) Coenen of Harlan,
Iowa; thirty-three grandchildren; sixty-five great grandchildren; one great
great grandchild; sisters: Zita Engel of Westphalia, Iowa, Nonna Adams of
Santa Cruz, California, Theresa Wellman of Neola, Iowa, Millie Leuschen of
Panama, Iowa and Cleo Nelson of Mercer Island, Washington; other relatives
and many friends. Margaret will be remembered by the many lives she has
touched.

at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa with Rev. Glen
Wilwerding as the celebrant with Brian Day, Ron Coenen, Kevin Coenen, Gene

was held in the St. Boniface Cemetery, Westphalia, Iowa.

Raymond P. Coenen - Age 85
Raymond Peter Coenen, the son of Henry and Agnes Stoll
Coenen, was born on April 7, 1920, on the family farm near Westphalia, Iowa.
He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia,
Iowa. He began school at country school and later attended St. Boniface
Catholic School, graduating in 1938.
On September 30, 1941, Ray was
united in marriage to Irene Musich at St. Boniface Catholic Church in
Westphalia. Thirteen children were born to this union. After their marriage,
the couple farmed near Panama for four years, before they moved to a farm in
the Westphalia area and eventually relocated to the Coenen Family Farm. In
the spring of 1973, they moved to Dunlap, Iowa, and purchased the Dunlap
Locker. In 1983 Ray moved to Minnesota and later re-located to Omaha, due to
health reasons. Early in life, Ray came to appreciate working with livestock
particularly draft work horses and attending livestock shows. He enjoyed the
outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and gardening. In his later years, Ray
was able to continue his love of card playing, hobby gardening and watching
his favorite sport, baseball.
Ray died on Tuesday, January
31, 2006, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, having attained the
age of eighty-five years, nine months and twenty-four days. In addition to
his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by Irene Coenen.

Rose Marie
Coenen - Age 70
Rose Marie
Coenen was born on August 14, 1937 to Charles Beran and Mildred Darnell in
Verdigre, Nebraska at the home of her grandparents. She was baptized at
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, and baptized in the
Catholic Church in 1958. She attended grade school in Audubon County and
Jacksonville, Iowa, graduating from Harlan High School with the Class of
1955.
On February 9, 1959, Rosie was united in marriage
to Clarence Coenen at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa,
where she remained a lifelong member. Four children were born to this union:
Kelvin, Leann, Curtis, and Greg.
Rosie was employed with the Shelby County Farm
Service Agency for over twenty years as a Program Technician, retiring in
November of 1998.
Her main focus was her family and she enjoyed when
they all got together like they did last June. She loved to play games and
was involved with anything her grandkids were involved with.
She was an excellent cook and had a huge garden
that she would gather vegetables from and use in her cooking. She was a
seamstress and enjoyed quilting as well as reading and talking on the phone.
Rosie had always wanted to be a nurse but was
thrilled when her daughter went through school and became one.
Rosie died on Monday, March 17, 2008, at Myrtue
Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy years,
seven months, and three days. She was preceded in death by her parents,
Harold and Mildred Hull, her father Charles Beran, her sisters Rosalene
Hardy and Carol Throlson, and her grandson Christopher Lynn Coenen.
She is survived by her husband Clarence Coenen of
Westphalia, Iowa; her children: Kelvin and Christina Coenen of Modesto,
California, Leann Coenen of Loveland, Colorado, Curtis and Beverly Coenen
also of Modesto, California, and Greg and Donna Coenen of Omaha, Nebraska;
eight grandchildren; her brothers and sisters: Larry Hull and his wife Kathy
of Harlan, Iowa, Lois Eriksen of Palm Bay, Florida, Delbert Hull of Kirkman,
Iowa, Mary and her husband Bill Murtaugh of Harlan, and Lita Van Cleave of

Alvin L. Conrad - Age 88
Alvin Lynn Conrad, the son of Arthur and Toy
(Erickson) Conrad, was born on March 28, 1917, at Harlan, Iowa. He
attended country school through the eighth grade, graduating with the
class of 1935 from Harlan Community High School in Harlan.
On September 14,
1941, Alvin was united in marriage to Delores Bristol at the First
United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa. Five children were born to this
union: Sue, David, Randy, Delmar, and Mark. After their marriage, the
couple farmed in Lincoln Township, Shelby County, Iowa. In 1983, they
retired from farming, but continued to reside on the farm. They
celebrated fifty-one years of marriage just before Delores died on
October 17, 1991.
Alvin was a member
of the First United Methodist Church in Harlan, the Odd Fellows, Golden
K Kiwanis, the Builders Club, and did various volunteer jobs, such as
Meals on Wheels. He had enjoyed traveling, golfing, coffee at Mickel’s
and spending time with his family.
He died on Tuesday,
September 27, 2005, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, having
attained the age of eighty-eight years, five months and thirty days. In
addition to his wife, Alvin was preceded in death by his daughter, Sue
and his brothers, Victor, Dale, Mervin and Kenneth. Survivors include
his children: David Conrad and his wife, Nancy of San Marcos,
California; Randy Conrad and his wife, Sandy of Harlan, Iowa; Delmar
Conrad and his wife, Janette of Fullterton, California; Mark Conrad of
Harlan, Iowa; special friend, Wilma Havick of Harlan, Iowa; fourteen
grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; his brother, Dewey Conrad
of Harlan, Iowa; sister-in-law, Lenora Conrad of Harlan, Iowa; other
relatives and many friends.

Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with Rev. Dave Swinton officiating.

Lenora M. Conrad - Age 81
Lenora
Maxine Conrad, daughter of Andrew and Sadie
(Benson) Flug, was born on May 2, 1926, north of
Red Line, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed
at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin, Iowa.
Lenora attended country grade school and was a
member of the class of 1944 from Irwin High
School.
On August 20, 1949, Lenora was united in
marriage to Kenneth E. Conrad in Hiawatha,
Kansas. Seven children were born to this union:
Sharon, Dale, Charles, Sandra, Dennis, Pamela,
and Lisa. After their wedding, Lenora and
Kenneth farmed the home place with Kenneth’s
brother Alvin. Lenora was a farm wife and helped
Kenneth with the farm chores. She also worked at
the Shelby County Court House and Title Company
for several years.
After Kenneth died in 1994, Lenora moved to
Harlan where she became very active in the
Myrtue Memorial Auxiliary and was to receive an
award for the work she performed as a member.
She also volunteered at blood mobiles, was an
active member on the fair board, the Commanders
Club and the Midstates Masters. Lenora was a
long-time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Harlan and supervised over the kitchen. She also
enjoyed spending time with her family,
traveling, and taking trips to the casinos.
Lenora died on Monday, December 31, 2007, at
Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska,
having attained the age of eighty-one years,
seven months, and twenty-nine days. She is
preceded in death by her parents, her husband
Kenneth E., one grandson, Kenneth A. Conrad; and
her siblings: Daniel, Mandy, Arthur, Charles,
Gaylord, Selma, Agneta, Leonard, Merlin, and
Bertha.
She is survived by her children: Sharon and her
husband Arlyn Oman of Kirkman, Iowa, Dale and
his wife Linda of Walnut, Iowa, Charles and his
wife Jonelle of Harlan, Iowa, Sandra and her
husband Leo Green of Omaha, Nebraska, Dennis of
Harlan, Pamela and her husband Jordan Larsen of
Kimballton, Iowa, and Lisa Conrad of Omaha;
thirteen grandchildren; thirteen
great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other

2008, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan,
Iowa, with Pastor Stephen Chellew officiating

Justin Green, and Troy Beck. Interment was held
at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.

Sabina Conrad - Age 89 Sabina Julia Conrad was born on January 27, 1918, to Peter and Clara (Bock) Gubbels on the original Gubbels’ family farm west of Westphalia, Iowa. She
was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia and
graduated from St. Boniface High School.
On June 27, 1943, Sabina was united in marriage to Eldred "E. J." Conrad at
St. Boniface Catholic Church. Five children were born to this union: John,
Dave, William, Walter, and Jane.
Sabina was a devoted mother and a fantastic cook. She enjoyed spending time
with her family and friends, raising her children, and tending to the many
activities of running the household.
Sabina became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Home in April of 2004 when
her health started failing. It was there that she died on Friday, March 30,
2007, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, two months, and three
days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Clara Gubbels, and
her brothers Peter, Alvin, Ambrose, and Richard.
Sabina is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Eldred "E. J."
Conrad of Harlan, Iowa; her children: John Conrad of West Des Moines, Iowa,
Dave and his wife Diane Conrad of Los Angeles, California, William Conrad of
Loveland, Colorado, Walter Conrad of Estes Park, Colorado, and Jane and her
husband Tim McAleer of Coralville, Iowa; four grandchildren; her sisters:
Sylvia Goeser of Westphalia, Iowa, Helen and her husband Dwight Wubbenhorst
of Mesa, Arizona, Virginia and her husband Cletus Lickteig of Denison, Iowa,
and Mary Ann and her husband Francis Koesters of Earling, Iowa; one brother

Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.

Jennie R. Cooper - Age 95
Jennie Rosalynn Cooper, the daughter of James
Henry and Clara May (Bigelow) Tucker, was born on May 8, 1909, at Mitchell,
South Dakota. At a young age, she moved with her family to Nebraska. Jennie
attended school at O’Neill, Nebraska and won awards for perfect attendance.
She also attended school at Inman, Nebraska.
On March 14, 1929,
Jennie was united in marriage to Paul B. Cooper at St. Louis, Missouri. Two
daughters were born to this union, Joycee and Linda. Paul and Jennie jointly
owned and managed several family style restaurants all over the area.
Jennie enjoyed bingo and gardening.
Jennie died on Sunday,
July 11, 2004, at Immanuel Fontanelle Care Center in Omaha, Nebraska, having
attained the age of ninety-five years, two months and three days. In
addition to her parents, Jennie was preceded in death by her husband, Paul
and her brothers and sisters, Ella May Tucker, Frankie Tucker, Ray Henry
Tucker, Alva Elizabeth Tucker, Ora Lee Tucker, Edna Pearl Tucker, Effie
Violet Tucker, and Floyd James Tucker.
Survivors include her
daughters, Joycee Ann Jaynes of West Wyndover, Nevada; Linda Kay Berg of
Omaha, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one
great-great granddaughter; other relatives and friends.

were held on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at 11:00 AM at the Harlan Cemetery in
Harlan, Iowa with Rev. Ed Frank officiating. Serving as casket bearers were

Coffin.

Shirley F. Cooper - Age 75
Shirley Faye Cooper, the daughter of Howard and
Charlotte (Herman) Holben, was born on February 19, 1930 at Magnolia, Iowa.
She attended Magnolia Elementary School and was a member of the graduating
class of 1947 from Logan High School in Logan, Iowa. Upon graduation,
Shirley attended Immanuel Medical Center Nursing School and obtained her
Registered Nurses License.
On October 5, 1952,
Shirley was united in marriage to Lloyd Cooper at St. John’s Lutheran Church
in Omaha, Nebraska. To this union, four children were born: Cindi, Bradford,
Clarise "Dede," and Randy. After their marriage, they resided in Omaha where
Shirley worked at Immanuel Hospital and Children’s Hospital. In 1968 they
moved to Harlan, Iowa, where Shirley was employed by Dr. Spearing until
1984, when they moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa. Shirley worked at the
McDermott Wing of Mercy Hospital until her retirement in 1996. In 1997,
Shirley was commissioned a Stephen’s Minister at Timothy Lutheran Church
working one-on-one each week with someone in need. In 1998, Lloyd became a
resident of the Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa. He died
on December 28, 1999.
After retirement, she
founded and was President of the Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Council
Bluffs Chapter. Shirley was instrumental in the annual NAMI Spirituality and
Mental Health Conferences. She was also very active in Mercy Center Life
Group, Step Out, and Care and Share Support Groups. In 2000 until 2004, she
worked for the Presbyterian Outreach and volunteered for Hospice Preferred
Choice. Shirley was the recipient of the Mother Mary Vincent McDermott Award
and also the 1998 Outstanding Service Award, which is given to a person in
the community for human relations and community service. Shirley always had
a smile on her face and had a passion for helping others.
Shirley died on
Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, after a
battle with cancer. She had attained the age of seventy-five years and
seventeen days. In addition to her parents and her husband, Lloyd, Shirley
was preceded in death by her brother, Les.
Survivors include her children: Cindi and her
husband, John Knudsen of Liberal, Kansas; Bradford Cooper of Omaha,
Nebraska; Clarise "Dede" and her husband, Steve Schnuettgen of Defiance,
Iowa; Randy Cooper and his wife, Sheri of Jackson, Tennessee; six
grandchildren; Heidi and her husband Coty Cooper, Amanda and Luke Knudsen,
Sara Schnuettgen, Ben and Max Cooper; one great-grandchild; Hannah Cooper;
brother and sisters: Idamae and her husband, Dr. Tom Fake of Denison, Iowa;
Dorothy and her husband, Clarence "Sonny" Busch of Persia, Iowa; Karolyn
Weed of Chicago, Illinois; Jeanie and her husband, Marlyn Netsch of
Bennington, Nebraska; Ronnie Holben of Omaha, Nebraska; Donna and her
husband, Tom Emswiler of Logan, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were
held on Friday, March 11, 2005 at 11:00 AM at Timothy Lutheran Church in
Council Bluffs, Iowa with Rev. Mike Petri. Serving as Honorary Casket
Bearers were Clarence Summers, Bob Cooper and Roger Kruger with Coty Cooper,
Larry Elias, Scott Vosika, Steve Brandenberg, Jeff Netsch, Keith Winey, Luke
Knudsen and Mark Elias as casket bearers. Interment was held in Westlawn
Hillcrest Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska.

Hilga Cordes -
Age 91
Hilga Cordes, daughter of Nels
and Dagmer (Christiansen) Jensen, was born on June 4, 1915, in Gates, Iowa. Hilga was baptized and confirmed at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk
Horn, Iowa. She attended country school through her seventh grade year in
Gates, Iowa, and then worked as a maid and nanny until her marriage to Hugo
Cordes in Maryville, Missouri on May 22, 1942.
Two sons were born to the union
of Hilga and Hugo, Byron and Wayne. The Cordes family began farming shortly
after their marriage, living next to Hugo’s parents. They moved to a farm
near Walnut in the late 1940's and remained there until 1970 when they
purchased and operated a farm near Adair, Iowa. After their retirement in
1977, they moved to Harlan, Iowa, and lived within a block of where Hilga
had worked as a young woman.
Hilga was a talented seamstress
and sewed clothes for herself and her sons. She made quilts for her children
and grandchildren using intricate needlework but never used a pattern for
her designs. In addition to sewing and quilting, her hobbies included
crocheting, watching game shows on t.v., jigsaw puzzles, and never turned
down a good card game. She also loved to cook for her family.
In 2001, Hilga moved into the Elm
Crest Retirement Home where she lived until her death at Myrtue Medical
Center on Saturday, October 7, 2006, having attained the age of ninety-one
years, four months, and three days. She was preceded in death by her
parents, three brothers, one sister, her husband, and one son.
Hilga is survived by her son
Wayne and his wife Ann of Plano, Texas, daughter-in-law Melody and her
husband Dale Lippold of Avoca, Iowa, four grandchildren, seven
great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and other family, and several
friends.
A Celebration Of Life was
celebrated on Wednesday, October 11,2006 at 11:00 AM at the Pauley Jones
Funeral Home - Avoca Chapel with Pastor Greg White officiating. Interment
was held at the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa with Brett Cordes, Kevin
Cordes, Allen Cordes, Dalton Jensen Darrell Nelson and Tylor Lang serving
as casket bearers.

Harriet E. Cox - Age 83
Harriet Elaine Cox, the
daughter of Albert and Alice
(Griffin) Brauch, was born
on February 23, 1922 at
Omaha, Nebraska. Harriet
attended school in Omaha,
Nebraska where she graduated
from Central High School.
She then attended the
University of Omaha where
she obtained a Language Arts
Degree in French and
Spanish. Upon graduation
from college, Harriet was
employed as a French and
Spanish student teacher in
Omaha.
On June 7, 1942, Harriet was
united in marriage to
Bernard Cox at Omaha,
Nebraska. After their
marriage, the couple made
their home in Tennant, Iowa,
where they operated the
Tennant Elevator, later the
Cox Grain Company, and
raised their five children:
Bert Jay, Bernadine, Bert
David, Berle, and Bernard,
Jr.
After being born again,
Harriet was baptized and
became a member of the First
Baptist Church in Harlan,
Iowa. She was also a member
of the Daughters of the
American Revolution. She and
Bernard did everything
together. Harriet enjoyed
sporty cars, and has
surprised more than a few
people when they saw an
older woman get out of a
2002 bright red Trans Am.
Harriet liked reading both
fiction and nonfiction
books, scrapbooking and
lifting the moods of others
with her sharp sense of
humor.
Harriet died on Friday,
August 19, 2005, at her home
in Tennant, Iowa, having
attained the age of
eighty-three years, five
months and twenty-four days.
In addition to her parents,
she was preceded in death by
two sons: Bert Jay and Berle.
Survivors include her
husband and partner in crime
of over sixty-three years,
Bernard Cox of Tennant,
Iowa; her children:

James
W. Croghan - Age 83
James "Jim" William Croghan was born on May 23, 1923 to
William and Helen
(Keane) Croghan on a farm west of Panama, Iowa.
Jim served in the United States Marine Corps and is a veteran of World War
II. After his discharge from the service, he was united in
marriage to
Kathleen McAllister on December 2, 1950, in Iowa City, Iowa.
Four children were born to this union: Anne, Gregory, Lisa, and Joseph. Jim
and Kathy lived on a farm near Panama, farming with his brother, Peter, and
raising their family.
Jim had a
life-long interest in government affairs. He worked to influence farm policy
at both the state and federal levels. While on the farm, he was active in
Farmers Union, serving as the Iowa Secretary/Treasurer.
In 1961, Jim accepted a position with the U. S. Department of
Agriculture in Des Moines, Iowa. The family relocated to Virginia so he
could work in the Washington DC office in 1964.
Jim enjoyed
playing golf and after retirement, volunteered as a starter at the Pinecrest
Golf Course in Annandale, Virginia. Jim and Kathy also hosted many foreign
exchange students from the middle east.
Jim died on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, in Falls Church, Virginia, having
attained the age of eighty-three years, seven months, and ten days. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Helen and William Croghan, his daughter
Lisa, two sisters, Helen Griffith and Elizabeth Kohles, and two brothers,
Joseph and Peter. He is survived by his wife Kathleen of Falls Church, VA,
his daughter Anne Giese of Alexandria, VA, and two sons, Gregory and his
wife Barbara Croghan of Annandale, VA, and Joseph and his wife Cynthia
Croghan of McLean, VA, his sister Bernadette Kirlin of West Des Moines, IA,
and his brothers Jerome Croghan of Manning, IA, and Tom and his wife Jean
Croghan of Omaha, NE, nine grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family
members, and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was
held on Saturday, January 6, 2007 beginning at 10:00
AM at St. Mary’s of the Assumption in Panama, Iowa, Rev. John Dorton
officiating. Serving as casket bearers were Joe Kirlin, Christopher Croghan,
Pat Croghan, Bill Griffith, Gerald Kohles, Phil Croghan, Jim Croghan, and
Dennis Croghan. Military rites were provided by Panama American Legion Post
No. 601.

Marjorie A. Custer - Age 86
Marjorie Alice Custer, the daughter of Peter W
and Lona (Jensen) Madson, was born on July 22, 1918, in rural Harlan, Iowa.
Marjorie attended school at Fairview Township Country School and then Harlan
Community High School and graduated with the Class of 1936. After graduating
from high school, she taught country school until 1941.
Marjorie was united in
marriage to Ival Benton Custer on March 6, 1941, at her parents home in
rural Harlan. They were the parents of three children. Ival and Marjorie
farmed and she helped with the farming along side of her husband. She was
also employed at the Bowling Alley and as a receptionist and book keeper for
Dr. Joseph Spearing for eighteen years.
Marjorie loved people,
her family, neighbors, friends and always had cookies and coffee ready
should they come for a visit. She was a positive person and always had words
of encouragement. Marjorie enjoyed listening to music and followed Harlan’s
sports programs. She loved being outdoors, whether she was working or
birdwatching. Marjorie also enjoyed the motorcycle rides that she and Ival
would take. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother and will
be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Marjorie died on
Saturday, October 9, 2004, at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa
having attained the age of eighty-six years, two months and eighteen days.
In addition to her parents, Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband,
Ival; her son, Tom Custer; grandson, Todd Custer; two sisters: Virginia
Broughton, Jeanette Dunn and her brother, Paul Wirth.
She is survived by her
daughters: Joan and her husband Dick Waller of Lincoln, Nebraska and Lynne
and her husband, Bob Ross of Ames, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Pat Custer of
Council Bluffs, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Jeff, Troy and Kristin Waller,
Mike and Tricia Custer, Ryan Ross, Dayna Sprecher, and Erin Johnson; three
great grandchildren: Mayson Custer, Owen Custer and Alyssa Waller; her
brother, Phil Madson and his wife, Pearl of Harlan; nieces, nephews, other
relatives, her special friend, Bob Lee, of Harlan and many other friends.
Funeral services were
held on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at 11:00 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in
Harlan, Iowa with Rev. Diana Holland as the clergy. Serving as honorary
casket bearers were Kristin Waller, Erin Johnson, Dayna Sprecher and Tricia
Custer with Jeff Waller, Mike Custer, Larry Madson, Eric Johnson, Troy
Waller and Ryan Ross serving as casket bearers. Interment was held in the
Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
