Lester Robert Alff - 79 Lester met his wife to be at a dance in Avoca. However, marriage was not to be until he felt he could support his wife and family. He proposed four years later on New Years Eve to Dorothy Osborn and they were married June 1, 1952, at the English Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa. Two children were born to this union, Marcia and Doug. During the years that Lester farmed, he had a natural ability with machinery and built and repaired much of the equipment he used. Farming was more than an occupation for Lester. He was one of the first in the area to grow soybeans and he also planted and raised certified oat seed. Lester enjoyed rebuilding Farmall tractors. He was known to be very particular, not only with his collection of restored tractors, but his every day work equipment was always kept in excellent condition. Most of his restored Farmall tractors were used on the farm and were not merely for looks. Lester had a very special relationship with his father-in-law. "You are more like a son to me than a son-in-law". He thought so much of his father and mother-in-law that he took them along on short trips and to Hawaii to celebrate Les and Dorothy’s 25th wedding anniversary. He loved to watch them as they were in awe of the sights they thought they would never see. When All Star Wrestling was popular in Omaha, Lester and his father -in-law never missed a match at the Civic Auditorium. Lester was an avid stock car racing fan. He enjoyed taking his children, grandchildren, nephew and neighbor children to the car races. Lester enjoyed NASCAR racing also, and never missed a race on TV. Lester enjoyed collecting precision IH and JD tractors and equipment that along with various antique cars and pickups, he enjoyed displaying in his curio cabinet. But most of all, Lester enjoyed his granddaughters Tina and Tonya and his great grandchildren, Alexandria, Zander, Katelyn and Gavin. Also he had special memories of his great granddaughters and his nieces sitting on his lap while applying make-up and adorning him with earrings, necklaces and barrettes in his hair. Les and Dorothy retired from the farm near Walnut, Iowa in 2001 and built a new home in Avoca, Iowa. It was here that he died on July 3, 2009, having attained the age of seventy-nine years, nine months and twelve days. In addition to his parents, Lester was preceded in death by his two sisters, Eloise Alff and Arlene Nieman. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Dorothy Alff of Avoca; his daughter Dr. Marcia Alff D.C. of Avoca and his son Douglas Alff and his wife Eileen of Walnut; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren, nieces and nephews other relatives and many friends. Jerry
Anderson - Age 67 Jerry Lou Anderson was born on July 1, 1940 in Mason City, Iowa, the eldest child of Harry and Lillian (O'Green) Anderson. In high school, he was a member of the local search and rescue team that involved diving in area lakes and searching the site of the airplane crash that killed Buddy Holly in Clear Lake, Iowa. An avid dancer, he often danced on a local TV station "Bandstand" program and once danced with Brenda Lee in a Clear Lake dance club. He won a local Twist Contest and was rewarded with a trip to New York City to meet Chubby Checker. After high school, Jerry ventured off to Des Moines, Iowa, and became a salesman for Tom McCann shoes. He later was transferred to Omaha, Nebraska. It was in Omaha in 1964 that Jerry met Sharon Chamberlain at a downtown coffee house late one night. They married later that year and their first child, Kevin was thereafter born. Jerry soon was traveling the country as a salesman for General Cigar Company and eventually relocated to Grand Island, Nebraska. However, Jerry soon discovered that air travel wasn’t for him. After a series of rough trips and icy landings, Jerry decided to find employment that allowed him to stay grounded. He went to work for a wholesale restaurant supply company in Grand Island, The Thompson Company. Jerry and Sharon built a new home in Grand Island and had four more children, Keith, Kelli, Kerri, and Kandi. Jerry always yearned to own his own business. He fulfilled his dream by buying a bar and restaurant and moving his family to Pierce, Nebraska. He owned the bar for several years and then Jerry and Sharon decided to move the family to Iowa to be closer to relatives. Eventually ending up in Avoca, Iowa, Jerry worked for several years at Tri-Center schools. He retired in 2000 and decided to pursue his hobbies full time....reading, crossword puzzles, doing tax work, going to estate auctions, and playing jokes on others. Jerry was a real prankster. He lived for the chance to surprise someone with the perfect joke. Jerry enjoyed going to auctions, yard sales, and second-hand stores. He reveled in getting a good deal and haggling over a purchase price. Some might call him cheap, but he could also be very generous, often giving to those less fortunate. Jerry was fond of his auction purchases. Sharon would often say he was "too" fond. He acquired quite a collection of goods over the years……keeping everything. To Sharon’s dismay, he filled up the house and garage with his auction purchases. Jerry was a big Elvis Presley fan. Elvis was known for doing things his own way and Jerry lived life with the same direction. Jerry always did things "his way." You may not have always agreed with him, but he always created a memorable impression on others. Jerry died on Saturday, December 8, 2007, while recovering from knee replacement surgery, having attained the age of sixty seven years, five months and seven days.
